12 Ensemble
Resurrection

The 12 Ensemble continue their rapid ascent in the international classical music world, with their debut album Resurrection. The collection comprises four works -- including a new composition from Bryce Dessner (The National), a commissioned work from experimental British composer Kate Whitley and pieces by Witold Lutoslawski and John Woolrich. The conductor-less ensemble always attempts to bring a renewed energy, vitality and freshness often lacking in music. Available on either LP or CD, on Sancho Panza records.

79.5
Predictions

Big Crown (The Fields & The Expressions, The Shacks) release the debut LP by intriguing NYC group 79.5. While it’s in essence a party record, a lot of influences are torpedoed into Predictions. The minimally groovy rhythm section often resembles ESG, but there’s a girl-group vibe to some of the carefree melodies, while tunes like ‘Boy Don’t Be Afraid’ have a little Sade to them. Imagine a more streamlined version of The Go! Team. It’s good fun.

A Certain Ratio
Force

Factory records signing A Certain Ratio have teamed up with Mute for a series of reissues and special releases. Here we have the reissue of their 1986 album Force which is such a defining record in their catalogue of leftfield post punk and disco inspired sound. On LP and CD. CD comes with three extra tracks.

Aaron Lee Tasjan
Karma For Cheap

Aaron Lee Tasjan is another perfect incarnation of the subironic American singer-songwriter with a twang for blues progressions, clever lyrics, and catchy hooks. His new album is packed with head-nodders. Added bonus: buying a copy from your favorite indie record store would be a great way to get Karma for Cheap.

Adrian Younge
The Electronique Void (Black Noise Instrumentals)

Stepping away for a minute from his recent killer collaborations with Ghostface Killah, producer (and entertainment law professor!) Adrian Younge considers this album to be an ‘academic’ one: a demonstration of the emotional capabilities of synthesisers. The Electronique Void certainly has the playful vibe of some early synth pioneers, though with an extra helping of groove in the mix. Out on Linear Labs.

Ailie Ormston
The Sedate

Ailie Ormston is back, though not quite as you knew her. The affable, wry dreariness of her band ******** gives way on this solo effort to something harder, more minimal and even *gulp* deconstructive. Fortunately, Ailie doesn’t take this stuff as seriously as many other musicians seem to and the result is crucially as entertaining as it is enlightening. Apparently all done with just one drum machine and one synth, and all.

Air Cushion Finish
Flink

Flink is the warped, mysterious and 8th offering of Berlin-incepted oddity - Air Cushion Finish. Fronted by the manipulated vocals of experimentalist Lippstueck, who has helped form the German experimentalist scene since the 1990's, this offering continues the pioneer's steady rise and is as intriguing as it is hypnotic.

Alan Hawkshaw / Brian Bennett / John Fiddy
Hot Wax

In 1976 a trio of acclaimed session musicians and library/film/TV composers came together to create an LP for the KPM Music Recorded Library that showcased ‘the latest trends in production music’. Said album? Hot Wax. Said artists? Brian Bennett (a former Cliff Richard & The Shadows kit man), John Fiddy and Alan Hawkshaw (one-time member of The Tony Visconti Orchestra). Be With Records have done the sensible thing and capitalised on a resurgent interest in library sounds by reissuing the record.

Alan Parker
The Sound Of Soul

Originally released in 1976 as the instrumental accompaniment to Themes International's The Voice Of Soul, Alan Parker’s much-coveted record of library-soul now gets reissued by Be With Records. Original copies of The Sound Of Soul regularly fetch mega-money on the vinyl black market, so it’s a good job that this new edition comes in at a fraction of the price. Les Hurdle and Mike Moran - both members of the de-facto Themes International house band The Rhythm Section - also contribute a couple of numbers.

Alejandro Escovedo
The Crossing

I think it’s fair to say that the influence of Alejandro Escovedo on American music, and especially the Alt. Country scene of the ‘90s has been severely underrated. Every time Uncle Tupelo get a mention, he should be the next name to enthusiastically tumble out of people’s mouths. Anyway, this guy’s got a new album out, it’s called The Crossing and features guest performances from MC5’s Wayne Kramer, Peter Perrett and John Perry from UK new wavers The Only Ones and Tex-Mex rock ‘n’ roller Joe Ely. LP and CD on Yep Roc.

Alejandro Mosso
Gaia

Six new tracks from Alejandro Mosso, who reckons that this set represents a move away from sheer dancefloor utilitarianism and towards electronic music narratives: songs if you will. Gaia’s tracks are all named for celestial bodies, and they do feel like expressions of something, even if they still retain the power to make you move those feet. Double 12” on Hivern Discs.

Alexandra Stréliski
Inscape

Alexandra Streliski is a composer and a pianist fully immersed into the structures and melancholy of the world of neoclassical music, delivering stately pieces of tender but powerfully affecting piano in both film soundtrack contexts and in her own original material. 'Inscape', her latest full-length, is a real journey.

All Them Witches
ATW

The fifth LP from All Them Witches (God I hate that name) surfaces on New West (Caroline Rose, The Devil Makes Three). ATW - Does it count as a self-titled record if it’s just the initials? - finds the Nashville trio smooshing Southern rock and metal stylings together in trademark fashion. Riffs galore. It’s like Mastodon.

Allah-Las
Calico Review

Allah-Las dragged themselves off the beaches and palm-tree-lined boulevards of Los Angeles to record this third album of theirs. They did bring that warm, laid-back tone into the studio with them though: Calico Review feels like the kind of summer record you play as the evening starts to settle in. Out on Mexican Summer.

alt-J
REDUXER

The Alty-Jays release an album that is set to be the best of their career to date, largely because it doesn’t feature all that much of their own music. Rather than being a new record from Image Of A Triangle, Reduxer is actually a collection of eleven ‘reinterpretations’ of tracks from the band’s third LP Relaxer. The fact that people like Danny Brown, Pusha T, The Alchemist and Little Simz are involved in Reduxer improves its chances considerably.

American Aquarium
Things Change

Following yet another personnel reshuffle, BJ Barnham and his latest American Aquarium bandmates have a new album Things Change. Once again, Barnham successfully got the record funded by fans through Pledge Music, which is nice. Set your phasers on Springsteencore, because “Tough times don’t last / Tough folks do”.

Amusement Parks On Fire
All The New Ends

After plenty of time away - their last LP was released way back in 2010 - Nottingham art-grungers Amusement Parks On Fire have returned to the fray recently. All The New Ends is the group’s second EP of the year and makes for a nice mix of styles. Its opener and lengthy closer invoke both Deerhunter and Idlewild in equal measure. Sandwiched between these we get the grainy bvdub-meets-Explosions In The Sky-style post-rock of ‘Temporal Rinse’.

Ana da Silva & Phew
Island

Tantalising collaboration between Phew, a Japanese electronic musician, and Ana da Silva, a founder member of The Raincoats. Island is a long-distance file-sharing collaboration with much to say and feel about distance and difference. Apollo Brown & Ghostface Killah
The Brown Tape

Ghostface Killah, one of the most prominent members of the Wu-Tang Clan, has collaborated with producer Apollo Brown, on The Brown Tape. The album is the story of the Deluca family, and the restless presence hunting them down. It's delivered in Ghostface's trademark flow, while Apollo Brown provides a worthy backdrop of chopped, crackling soul.

Appleblim
Conch Shell Motives

Since running Skull Disco and Apple Pips Bristolian Appleblim has moved to Berlin and had a few releases through R&S, Aus Music and Tempa merely hinting at things bubbling beneath the surface. Now he introduces his new label Beatnik Boulevard with his first release. The lines between house, electro, techno and pure bass weight getting ever more blurred Conch Shell Motives brings it for old ears and new.

The title track from the late Bert Jansch’s final album, rightfully presented as a single in the 7” format here. And on the B-side, a sparse demo of the same track, for comparison. 7” single on Earth Recordings, limited to 2000 copies.

Biters
The Future Ain't What It Used To Be

Biters are a band who go full vintage in their evocation of punkish (but also somewhat glam) 70’s rock, as re-imagined by a group with access to a modern digital studio and a fondness for anthemic choruses. The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be is released by Earache, with signed editions available while stocks last.

Black Mamba Fever are a four-piece band playing a slightly messed-up sounding indie rock / punk-pop hybrid music. Feeling The Strain is a 7” single, released by a label called Eating People Is Wrong (quite right too).

Wild and Reckless

Portland’s own Blitzen Trapper  present an album described as “Half musical - Half rock-opera” (which in my mind is a bit like being half strangled / half drowned), it’s also a companion piece to their 2008 album Furr. We have seven songs from the production with the themes (“darker dystopian stories of rural and suburban west coast death-drive via a riffing psychedelic landscape”) expanded to get us up to twelve tracks. We all like to get wild and we all like to get reckless. But Wild & Reckless? The choice is yours.

Brown Sugar
I'm In Love With A Dreadlocks: Brown Sugar And The Birth Of Lovers Rock 1977-80

While their mammoth Studio One reissues project remains the jewel in Soul Jazz Records crown, the label have also done a decent job of shining new light on some lost classics of British reggae. Their latest release is a compilation of tracks by pioneering lovers rock group Brown Sugar. With the help of Dennis Bovell this South London trio - who included one Carol Simms - topped the charts in the late 1970’s with singles like the eponymous ‘I’m In Love With A Dreadlocks’. This album brings together some of their hits, dubs and extended mixes with interviews with Bovell, group member Pauline Catlin and others. I’m In Love With A Dreadlocks is another fine bit of excavation from Soul Jazz.

Bruce Haack
Preservation Tapes

The Preservation Tapes by Bruce Haack is a selection of material from the late Canadian electronic music pioneer’s archive. All selections are previously unreleased. The music mainly comes from a time when Haack was recording the proudly Christian label, Sparrow Records. Whilst the lyrics contain unfamiliar religious themes, Haack’s signature vocoder sound is a distinctive feature. Beck and Stereolab have been known to cover Haack’s material in the past.
