1939 Ensemble
Beats & Saints

The Beats & Saints EP features versions of songs by The Breeders, Stereolab, Charles Mingus and more, plus some originals.

2-BMW
Don’t Tell Me (How Love Should Feel)

Another dusted off gem from Major Problems and Compassion Cuts, the soulful New Jersey garage of 2-BMW’s ‘Don't Tell Me (How Love Should Feel)’ was previously just a distant memory for fans of Tony Humphries who hammered it back at Zanzibar in the 90s, only a handful ever pressed. With the original now reissued and backed by four dubs, producer Larry P Rauson gets the props he deserves.

6D22
Dragon's Path EP

Cascading synths sit at the heart of this techno four tracker, which has a slight old school trance feeling to it. The arpeggios roll on and on as understated beats and bass rumble beneath them. Psychedelic and engrossing stuff, completed with a nightmarish remix from Heinrich Mueller aka Gerald Donald of Drexicya, Dopplereffekt, Der Zyklus, Arpanet etc. fame.

Tactus Tempus

Members of Hot Chip, Caribou, Simian Mobile Disco, Floating Points, and Junior Boys have got together to perform Frank McCarthy’s experimental composition Tactus Tempus, whereby 5 individuals improvise separately but are guided by a simple line on a score sheet, which they in turn interpret themselves. Each using a synthesizers this record has two takes, one more tonal the other more percussive.

A Veil Of Water
Late Night Loneliness

Self-taught multi-instrumentalist Rune Trelvik releases his second full length under his A Veil Of Water moniker. Channeling the more melancholic side of his output Late Night Loneliness mixes post rock and gentle, minimal, neoclassical akin to Ólafur Arnalds’ Living Room Songs. A.J. Holmes
Robin Hood Gardens

A.J. Holmes here pays tribute to Robin Hood Gardens, a soon-to-be-demolished '70s housing estate in London. Holmes recorded these melancholy guitar and vocal songs in various parts of the estate, relying on the natural resonance of the spaces, rather than any post-production effects, to colour the recordings. 10” EP on Onomatopoeia.

Love at Low Speed is an especially personal collection of songs by Abram Shook, delving into the end of an eleven year relationship with all the serious song-weight you’d expect from that. Adam Feingold
Ascension

Canadian producer Adam Feingold aka Ex-Terrestrial (1080p, Temple, Pacific Rhythm) returns to Steven Julien's label for a second twelve, featuring two cuts of the rugged style house/techno that Funkineven seems to hoover up for his imprint. 'Ascension' is raw and emotive with a smattering of acid, while the blue 'Inner Zone' is melancholy and introspective.

Addison Groove & Bim Sanga present Bags Inc
Where Are The People EP

Bristol bass botherers Addison Groove and Sam Binga last linked up on 50 Weapons back in 2013 for the BS3 EP. Now they’re back with some seriously reduced club wares for the newly minted Bags Inc label, exploring slender techno tools and icy electro shot through with plenty of West Country moodiness. Compared to their usual rowdy material this shows a new approach for both artists, and very classy it is too.

Aera is Ralf Schmidt, a house music producer who really enjoys genres of music that are not house. Hence he integrates elements from the palettes of techno, electro and trance into his productions, resulting in vivid tracks that come at you from all angles. Thankfully, Schmidt has the skills to keep all things in delightful balance. This is a 12” EP released by Hivern Discs.

African Ghost Valley
Colony

African Ghost Valley are a one part Canadian and one part European duo. They make heavy electronic music, improvising with industrial and dub sounds and mixing them with field recordings. It’s all made in ‘The Bunker’, a space beneath a multi-story car park. Colony is an ambiguous work with the listener left to decide it’s meaning, but it’s fair to say that it’s pretty dark stuff. Ages and Ages
Something to Ruin

Heart lifting pop that sounds like it was recorded in your front room. It wasn’t. It was captured by Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock’s studio, but the personality of this record is it’s strength. Acoustic indie pop filled with gleeful melodies and laid back choral vocals done by all of the band, it’s a great end of summer trip.

Air Max '97
Nacre

Debut album from DJ and producer Air Max '97. I should say that he'd been using that name for years before every student in the UK started wearing them again. Nacre's tracks are beautifully sound designed and constructed, bringing a genuine heartfelt emotion that is all too uncommon in the electronic music scene.

Air Traffic Control Quartet
Blue Raspberry

A blue raspberry. That'll be the day. What a time to be alive, indeed. Air Traffic Control Quartet is an avant-garde prankster's delight, a chase scene happening in a maze, parkour performed in an MC Escher painting. Using obscured melodies, harpsichords, storm samples and weird film motifs, this record truly has something, a bit broken, for everyone. Collage delirium.

Akadama Bros
Sunshine

Some J-rap larking about from the Akadama Bros here, a crew who boast Bo Ningen’s Taigen Kawabe in their numbers. ‘Sunshine’ is a wry and fun cut that boasts a squelchy, vaguely jukey instrumental. Contains remixes Clock Hazard’s Technoman and Shitkatapult’s Candie Hank.

Spanning 30 years of Athens based composer Akis Daoutis’s work Space Time and Beyond covers his wide ranging creations, including his soundtrack work, and more new age jazz fusion experimentation. Aleem
Release Yourself

Originally released in 1984, identical-twin-brother duo Aleem’s Release Yourself gets a timely repress. This is an early electro masterpiece that goes a long way in showing what subsequent trends have inherited (vocal sample re-pitch, reverence for drum machines, etc.) and what, for better or for worse, they’ve largely discarded (infectious, funky positivity). They don’t make it like this anymore. Comes with free titular advice to any artists struggling for label deals.

I'm still trying to get my head round this album art. It's not that I don't know what it is, it's just...why? Part of a wider cache of tracks, Aleksi Perälä continues his spooked Colundi informed techno workouts on this three track 12". Alex Lipinski
Alex

With The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Anton Newcombe (also the label runner of ‘a’ Recordings, who are putting this album out) at his side as producer, Alex Lipinski has crafted a snappy record of sixties-style pop-psych rock. Alex Puddu
The Mark of the Devil

This is the third and last of the Trilogy cult composer Alex Puddu concocted with Italian vocalist Edda Dell'orso. This showcases Puddu at his most experimental and is a must for fans of '60s/'70s soundtracks.

All Your Sisters
Uncomfortable Skin

All Your Sisters are proudly in love with a certain part of the 1980’s when industrially-vibed post-punk was all the rage. Their second album Uncomfortable Skin nails that particular sound with stern drum machines, obscured vocals and Cureish guitars. Lots of shadowy swagger, released by the deliberately dark Flenser label.

Peter Broderick and David Allred’s musical partnership is a beautiful thing: they use only their voices and their chosen string instruments (violin and upright bass), and they record live, without overdubs or edits. Alvarius B

Alvarius B is the moniker of former Sun City Girl member Alan Bishop, formerly of Sun City Girls and now going his own way. Your Afterlife Is Cancelled

Andy Human & The Reptoids
Kill The Comma

“Is it modern cause we killed the comma?” ask Andy Human & the Reptoids on their gritty new 7” for Emotional Response entitled Kill the Comma. For what it’s worth it’s high time somebody offed the Oxford comma. In any case there is some solid channelling of the garage punk spirit going on here. Andy’s vocal style is well balanced between entertainer and provocateur while the guitar is fabulously hash - especially so on the title tune.

Anthony Linell
Layers of Reality

Having cast aside the exoticist façade of Abdulla Rashim, Northern Electronics boss Anthony Linell continues to produce material for his label under his own name (or does he?). Northern Electronics (The Empire Line, Varg) with another cheery-as-a-tax-return EP. B. Fleischmann
Stop Making Fans

The record’s almost called Stop Making Sense, there’s a song on it called ‘We’ve Heard The Talking Heads Talking’ and the cover looks like a still from the video for Hot Chip’s ‘One Pure Thought’. Needless to say that B. Fleischmann’s latest LP is a smart, fun and danceable album. The indietronica here comes with more backbone than much of the genre’s fare and is counterbalanced by plaintive electronic torch songs like ‘There Is A Head’ and Gloria Amesbauer collaboration ‘The Pros of Your Children’.

After time spent dabbling with the Sexwitch side-project, Natasha Khan returns to her original moniker for the first Bats For Lashes album in 4 years. Beach Skulls’ debut Slow Grind showcases lulling sunshine-laced garage pop that paints a picture of summer far far removed from their current dwellings of Manchester and Glasgow. Catchy and heart warming, It’s nostalgia taken from long evenings round a fire on the beach...not in Glasgow… Or Manchester...

It was produced by The Dust Brothers who also produced his classic Odelay album and also features the Brazilian Tropicalia influences he first showed on Mutations. Belle and Sebastian
How To Solve Our Human Problems (Parts 1-3)

Back in the day (eg in the nineties), Belle & Sebastian were renowned for the extraordinarily high quality of their EPs, so it's great to see the band returning to the format, perfect for their smart indie pop. How To Solve Our Human Problems has been released as three separate EPs, but is also available all together, either on a single CD or in a vinyl box-set.

Belmer (Fatima Yamaha)
Wildebeets EP

The deep-house-with-funky-lead-lines schtick has served Fatima Yamaha very well up to this point, but the Dutch producer clearly felt that it was time for a change. So he’s taken on a new moniker - Belmer - and dropped this new five-track EP. Wildebeets is more rough-and-ready than the FY stuff, and the style of the EP jumps around more too. There is techno, juke, electro, and even a bit of modern r ‘n’ b floating around here. The best track is definitely ‘Yell Of The Murr’, which sounds like Aphex Twin doing the 'Macarena'.

Belmond Black
Never Too Late

Cameroonian singer / guitarist / harmonica player Belmond Black travelled to Nigeria to cut this idiosyncratic mix of reggae and afro-funk in 1979. It was originally released under the title Happy to See You. As explained in this reissue’s extensive liner notes, it took the artist 38 years to track down a copy of his own record. The eventual happy reunion inspired the title change. Charming, raw and reverb-heavy, it’s more than a curio and worth checking out for Afrobeat and reggae enthusiasts.

Ben & Sadar's
We Are Righteous People

This is a bold and direct couple of tracks, straight-up disco jams forged from the apt collaboration of Ben & Sadar. As a wholly organic piece, nothing is sampled here - only clean cut bass, sax, guitar and drum programs amount to We Are Righteous People. It's a must have for retro electro fiend.

Ben Frost
Ionia / Jlin Rework

On the verge of the release of his fifth full length album The Centre Cannot Hold, minimalist/maximalist Ben Frost brings its first offering, Ionia. With the concept of the album being a near freeform fight between creation and its creator, recorded by Steve Albini, it’s looking like these could be quite...cathartic. Backed with an exclusive remix by footwork stalwart JLIN.

Ben Penn
Spare Hobby / Carrera

The handily rhyming Ben Penn is a Dutch 'agent' who has made what he describes as "inter dimensional higher level funk" using a vocoder to create that true '80s electro vibe. He's an expert on the synthesiser and uses this instrument to create wild retro flourishes to remind you of the time you danced to Hancock (Herbie).

Beneath
No Symbols 006

With track titles that include ‘Cack’ and ‘Fuck Y’all’, you know this isn’t going to be a neat and tidy release. And Beneath doesn’t disappoint, throwing out queasy synth tones along with pummelling rhythms that’ll have listeners dancing happily but unsteadily all night long. Four tracks on this white label 12” for the No Symbols imprint.

Benedek
Earlyman Dance

Another string in the ultra-chilled, downtempo house bow of Music From Memory’s sublabel Second Circle. Los Angeles producer (Nicky) Benedek takes the long road and dances it with two versions of the track ‘Sub Terra’ (relaxed and funky or very relaxed and funky) as well as three other original productions. There are the faintest, most graceful tinges of acid and electro, and the backing synths on closer ‘Nucid’ are irresistible.

Big French
Stone Fish

A second full-length album of the strange and personal weird-pop vision conjured up by Quentin Moore and the rest of the Big French crew. Stone Fish’s sixteen tracks are tight but wobbly, pirouetting quickly between different high-technique guitar parts, grooves and melodic ideas. Plus keen exploitation of quirks of the reel-to-reel tape recording medium! On Wharf Cat Records.

The one born Matt Popieluch has been playing with everyone from Glasser to Fools Gold to Sky Ferreira this past decade. When he’s not been helping others out, he’s been putting out vaguely Neil Young-ish rock under the moniker Big Search. This stirring new album should sit nicely between Kurt Vile and Angel Olsen on the BBC Radio 6Music playlist. Out via Danger Mouse’s new label 30th Century Records.

Bill Baird has not one but two brand new albums ready for release via Talkshow Records! One of them is for the morning and one is for the evening: Baby Blue Abyss is the evening one. Binker and Moses
Alive In The East?

Binker and Moses return with 'Alive In The East?' following last year's mega-success 'Journey To The Mountain Of Forever' (which garnered much praise, including a cherished 'Urban Album Of The Year' from the urbane music publication Mojo Magazine). Binker Golding and Moses Boyd are at the forefront of a London-based jazz explosion, and this is their third LP in as many years. The collective of musicians on the record includes free-jazz innovator Evan Parker, and half of Yussef Kamaal. Careful composition meets blasts of spontaneity and improvisational freedom. Bird Of Paradise
Smoking Holiday EP

UK producer Jo Howard's latest EP contains for varied tracks from the retro-tech diaspora. Opening with a paranoid, down tempo number before moving onto the 80s futura of 'Joy-Rides', side A is all atmosphere. Side B brings in a steady hypnosis on the title track, before the pummelling 'Breather Resist' closes things on a faster tip.

‘Arpa’ was recorded in the same sessions that spawned Bjørn Torske & Prins Thomas’s 2017 collaborative LP Square One. Blackdown
Rollage Vol.2: Keysound Sessions Anthem

This new Blackdown material is the result of a tightly constrained process: all four tracks have been built up around a piece of audio grabbed by a phone in the middle of a Keysound club night. From that inauspicious sound grain, a bunch of strong bangers has sprung, all rolling forth at 130bpm. Rollage Vol. 2: Keysound Sessions Anthem is a 12” out on Keysound.

Just look at the sleeve? Wouldn't you just want to hang out with those guys? They are like Embrace but with cool lights. Well last time round Blossoms knack of writing catchy post Oasis anthems and adding enough 80s production to get local radio programmers everywhere putting away their Howard Jones LPs was a winning formula.  Now it's that 'difficult' second album. A self-released 12” from the man born Luke Standing. Unearthed is as you’d expect from someone who once found shelter under the awning of Ostgut Ton. Breathe Panel
Breathe Panel

I'm very much enjoying the palm tree on the front of this debut album by this Southern Rail linked (ie London and Brighton) band.  The palm suggests that they have the sort of summery sound of the more stretched out and maybe they do but their songs are bold and skyscraping perhaps bringing to mind the wide open spaces of the National.

British Sea Power
Let The Dancers Inherit The Party

Although their unique way with live performance and semi-bonkers ideas might suggest otherwise, British Sea Power's music is often very standard stadium leaning rock and they continue this trend on this their first new material in four years. Full of intelligent songs the clunkily titled Let the Dance's Inherit the Party features the usual wide range of subject manner pinned on to blustery '80s inspired pop/rock.

Caliban
Digital Reggae

Music From Memory continue to position themselves as heirs to the Soul Jazz throne with another excellent reissue. Caliban’s only single was cut in 1984 as a response to lack of black cultural artefacts included in the first payload from the U.S. space station. That said, the combination of dancehall and funk stylings means ‘Digital Reggae’ is one of the slinkiest protest songs you’ll hear. The vinyl includes a new remix and the groovy, Stevie Wonder-influenced 'Supernatural Magic'.
