Worst Reviewed Albums of the Year

Once called 'clickbait shit' by a former Leeds celebrity, here once again - when it can't do too much harm - is our list of the Worst Reviewed Albums of 2018. As usual, the caveat is important: this is just a bit of fun, and our opinions must be taken with a sackful of salt.

Father John Misty
Pure Comedy

Here he comes again 'The Dancing Man' whose varied folk stylings on 'I Love You Honeybear' sent him from folk also-ran to beard of a generation. That album's mix of confessional songwriting, daring lyricism and evocative and diverse production made it more than just another folk album. I wonder how many songs on this much anticipated follow up are about his wife?

Insecure Men
Karaoke for One: Vol. 1

As we don't work in the London-based media, we don't get on with all the Fat White Family and related stuff we have been told to like so the likes of Insecure Men have rather passed us by. No doubt the Quietus will be on board with this new album from the toothless wonders as they rattle through covers from the likes of Bruce Springsteen, The Carpenters and Peter Andre. One for the end of year lists.

Jack White
Boarding House Reach

Jack is back. First new album for four years for the former White Stripes polymath. This time he holed himself up in an apartment and let his creativity run wild. Boarding House Reach explores rock and roll, punk, electro, gospel and everything in between. A tour de force of his abilities to experiment and surprise.

John Grant
Love Is Magic

John Grant feels that album-by-album his music is becoming a truer reflection of who he is. Judging by the cover of his 4th solo album, Love Is Magic, he’s really coming out of his shell. The former Czars frontman debuted with Queen Of Denmark, an album of sublime soft rock with unflinching and, at times, humorous lyrics. Since then his music has become increasingly more electronic and more experimental. His brutal and confessional lyrics remain.Love IS Magic was Produced in collaboration with Benge, AKA Ben Edwards from Wrangler who collaborated on the Creep Show project earlier in the year.

Okkervil River
In The Rainbow Rain

If you found yourself somewhat depressed by Okkervil River’s introspective album, ‘Always’, then ‘In the Rainbow Rain’ is the welcome catharsis. Produced by bandleader Will Sheff, and mixed by Shawn Everett (Perfume Genius, The War on Drugs), the new LP is a hopeful and colourful oasis constructed by electrifying guitars, vast synths and glorious backing vocals.

Sun Kil Moon
This Is My Dinner

This Is My Dinner is the ninth album from Sun Kil Moon. It was written and recorded in November and December 2017 in Copenhagen and San Francisco. There are covers of AC/DC and Partridge Family songs. Mark Kozelek has also set a chapter from Irish writer, John Connolly’s novel ‘He’ to music. So it’s not just songs about his evening meal, then? The Lemon Twigs
Go To School

The Lemon Twigs debut album Do Hollywood was loved by Norman customers despite what the staff thought, so you’d probably like to know about it’s follow-up, huh? Go To School is a concept album telling the life story of a chimp called Shane whose dad just happens to be Todd Rundgren. Jody Stephens from Big Star and Natalie Mering AKA Weyes Blood make guest appearances. 2LP and CD on 4AD.

Thundercat + OG Ron C & The Chopstars
Drank

By now you probably know that Thundercat’s third album Drunk is a fast-moving masterpiece that augments his George Duke / Stanley Clarke-influenced fusion style with shades of Zappa and Todd Rundgren. An A Wizard, A True Star for our times, even, but one that finds room for Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins! The album’s richness and detail make it a great candidate for a chopped and screwed treatment. Slower, longer, and deeper, this slurred, sticky, double cup purple version is a massively fun alternative route to Thundercat’s fiendish funk, intricate basslines and soulful vocals.

Titus Andronicus
A Productive Cough

Pretty much the world's most preposterous band 'A Productive Cough' could well be seen as the album Titus Andronicus went too far. These haughty singalongs sound something like the Pogues channeled through Bruce Springsteen but even more rambunctious than that sounds. Features an extremely pointless cover of Bob Dylan's 'Like a Rolling Stone' which was the moment we (finally) switched off.
