The Pharcyde
Labcabincalifornia

Snarky and extremely wise-cracking Pharcyde, aka the band responsible for all the your mum jokes in the world, made a record after Bizarre Ride II, you just don't know about it (to be honest, maybe you do). It's wisely titled Labcabincalifornia and a certain J Dilla had his hand in producing it, from way back before people knew he was going to splice it all up.

The Rock*A*Teens
Sixth House

20 years ago The Rock *A* Teens played a small part in the history of the Atlanta, Georgia indie scene with a few EPs and albums. Some were released on the Superchunk-owned Merge label. This led to a reunion appearance at the Merge 25 festival and now a new album, Sixth House. Previously blurred by reverb, their sound is sharpened up and the songs are more anthemic. Limited translucent green vinyl, standard black vinyl and CD on Merge.

The Rolling Stones
From The Vault: No Security - San Jose ’99

As the title might suggest, this is an archival album that deals in a Rolling Stones concert from their 1999 No Security tour. The triple-vinyl release sees the withered old crones play and oldies-and-newies set, though of course the newies in this case are a couple of decades ripe by now. Unfortunately the press release doesn’t let on as to whether No Security - San Jose ‘99 includes audio of Keith and Mick dissecting the subtle majesty of Dennis Bergkamp’s winner for Holland when they played Argentina in France ‘98.

The Saxophones
Songs of the Saxophones

The Saxophones started as the solo project of Alex Erenkov. He wanted to incorporate some basic percussion into his sound so recruited his wife, Alison Alderdice, which also meant he could take her on tour with him. As you can probably tell from the cover of Songs Of The Saxaphones, he’s quite fond of her. Their influences all come come from leftfield sounds such as The Exotica/Hawaiian music of the 1950s - Edhen Abhez, Buddy Fo and Martin Denny to name a few, Vittorio Impiglia, a 1970s Italian outsider guitarist and west coast jazz. LP on Full Time Hobby.

The Sediment Club
Stucco Thieves

NYC punk trio The Sediment Club are back with their latest album, a collection of songs that charts the culmination of a decade of urgent and noisy music, the band's trademark concise, brutal sound unwavering 10 years into their career. Expect guttural howls, screeching guitars and climactic, surging drums.

The Shacks
The Shacks

While you may know The Shacks best down to The Shacks opener ‘This Strange Effect’ being used in an iPhone commercial, this young NYC duo have enough about them to suggest they’re more likely to hang around than previous Apple picks like Steriogram. Their self-titled debut record features some fine songwriting pitched somewhere between Ray Davies and Mazzy Star, and singer Shannon Wise has a great husky coo that recalls Jane Birkin. Originally released in 2016, this reissue on Big Crown comes with a couple of bonus tracks.

The Shins
Chutes Too Narrow

New Mexico group The Shins deal in melodic, sprightly indie pop. They are best known for their first two albums 'Oh, Inverted World' and 'Chutes Too Narrow', a pair which are often considered as some of the best indie records of the early 2000s. They've got all sorts of other little interesting flourishes too, from straight up indie rock, poppy folk and mild psychedelia.

The Skull Eclipses

This coming-together between Spencer Stephenson (Botany) and Raj Haldar (Lushlife) has produced an intriguing LP. While in aesthetic it skirts close to the stables of Brainfeeder and Liquid Amber, the sonics reference everything from Matthewdavid to The Focus Group. Tracks like ‘Pillars’ are edgy and thrilling hip-hop cuts that benefit from whip-smart guest verses. Laraaji and Open Mike Eagle feature, among others.

The Thing

Yeah that’s right, it's The Thing baby! Saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, bassist Ingebrigt Haker Flaten and drumkit powerhouse Paal Nilssen-Love play in a thousand and one different contexts these days, but it's great to hear them return to the roots of what really launched them into the free jazz world and beyond. Theo Parrish
Gentrified Love Part 4

Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature may be turning twenty this year, but that doesn’t mean that the Detroit legend is resting on his laurels. Rather, the fourth instalment of his Gentrified Love series sees Parrish looking to improve on past glories. A-side ‘Leave The Funk To Us’, for instance, appeared in truncated form on Gentrified Love 2. This full version, featuring Amp Fiddler, John Douglas and Ideeyah, is a classic TP funky stepper. The B-side is an update of a track by Paul Randolph & Kathy Kosins which appeared on 2017’s Brownswood Bubblers compilation.

Tim Maia
Disco Club

The public’s seemingly unquenchable desire for Brazilian sounds has led to the unearthing of another long-lost treasure. Tim Maia is something of a legend in his home country, producing endless wedges of Brazilian soul between 1970 and his death in 1998. His eighth LP pits his powerful baritone yip against muscular funk and disco grooves. Though reissued once in 1991, this is the first time Disco Club has resurfaced with the original track titles (they were changed for the 1991 pressing).

TINT
Ricochet Screen

An intriguing record of sound collages from New York artist TINT here. Ricochet Screen builds its compositions up from found sounds and field recordings, often of general chit chat. Over this TINT puts anything from distorted bass guitar (‘Purr XYZ’) to beautiful, Debussy-esque piano improvisations (‘Earth D423’). It’s not unlike the best bit of Yves Tumor’s repertoire. This LP is out via Root Strata (Richard Youngs, Grouper).

Tom Waits
Foreign Affairs

1977’s Foreign Affairs is Tom Waits at his most big budget and nostalgically cinematic. The filmic feel is exemplified by the forties style epic Potter’s Field and Bette Midler duet I Never Talk to Strangers. It's heavily string and brass laden when the singer’s not mostly alone at the piano, as on standout Burma Shave. The furthest Waits would go in this direction, though Barber Shop hints at his ramshackle, bellowing future.

Transformation / Beau Wanzer
Kozmik / Orbit

This split 12” on Nation offshoot Kode plays two of techno’s more idiosyncratic voices off against each other. Transformation’s offering is a hypnotic slow-mo grind, full of faraway screeches and eerie percussion. Kind of like Kraftwerk’s ‘Autobahn’ if Kraftwerk had actually been Fuck Buttons and the record was cut at 33 when it was meant to be cut at 45. On the flip, L.I.E.S./Jealous God bloke Beau Wanzer gives us a track called ‘Oklahoma 3’, which sounds nothing like any of the music from Oklahoma. It actually sounds like a darkwave rendering of Hype Williams.

Traps PS
New Chants

Sometimes press releases can actually muddle things up for a rather than simplify them. What do you mean when you say the band is ‘questing for an expression not yet known’, or 'matriculating the madrigals of mayhem'? Why have you spent a paragraph comparing said artist to Johnny Major-Shakin’-Bacon? Who even is that? Anyway, kudos to whoever wrote the spiel for New Chants by Traps PS. Within the first paragraph they compare the LA trio to The Minutemen and Gang Of Four, and they close out by talking about Wire, and that’s the whole thing sewn up right there. If only more of them were like this.

The Ballad Of Shirley Collins

The documentary The Ballad of Shirley Collins traces the long and eventful life of our era’s foremost singer of traditional English folk song. The film captures sessions for her album Lodestar, her first after decades of tragic silence. It also recalls her 1959 song-collecting trip to the US with Alan Lomax, some of the fruits of which are included on this soundtrack. Also here is music from collaborators Michael J York and Ossian Brown, an unearthed home recording of Shirley’s late sister Dolly, and a previously unreleased 1958 BBC session. Available on vinyl, or on CD with a DVD of the film itself.

Finders Keepers bring yet another vital moment of the 20th Century French leftfield to wax with this release of early electroacoustic music and music concrete. After Pierre Schaeffer secured the keys to one of Europe’s first purpose-built electroacoustic studios in 1951, a community began to incubate around the studio which eventually developed into the Groupe de Recherches Musicales de la R. T. F.. This release brings together essential works made by that loose collection of artists, who included Luc Ferrari and Michel Philippot.

Not Good For Your Health: Punk Nuggets 1972-1984

Punk is a loose term for what we have here. While Not Good For Your Health: Punk Nuggets 1972-1984 contains several of the scene’s defining anthems - ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’, ‘Blank Generation’ and suchlike - there is as much ‘post-’ and ‘proto-’ as there is ‘punk’ on display. Entries from The Gun Club, Joy Division, Patti Smith, Television and more give Rhino’s twenty-three-track compilation a pleasing sense of variety. The quality of the content is, of course, beyond dispute.

Teen Expo: The Cleopatra Label

There wasn’t much by way of a DIY record label culture in the 1960’s, but Tommy Falcone bucks that trend. Throughout the decade he ran Cleopatra, an imprint that was ahead of its time in both approach and style. Ignoring the narrow genre constraints of many contemporaneous labels, Cleopatra signed everything from garage rock bands to girl groups to crooners, and Falcone ran the whole operation himself out of a New Jersey basement. Now Numero Group have compiled twenty-five of Cleopatra's most essential releases on this Teen Expo compilation.

London duo VLMV (pronounced ‘Alma’ - give over!) are Stranded, Not Lost. Suggest otherwise and you might be in for a long discussion on semantics. Westerman
Edison

The comparisons to Arthur Russell have flown freely for Westerman since his emergence a couple of years back. Russell certainly lurks in the corners of Westerman’s new single ‘Edison’ - their singing voices in particular are uncannily similar - though the song is very much drawing from the Love Is Overtaking Me end of the spectrum. That means there’s room for plenty of other welcoming folk-/soft-rock influences here - Belle & Sebastian, Future Islands and Jens Lekman all come to mind.
