A Sagittariun
The Circle Stops Somewhere

Sagittariuns, eh. Generous, funny, impatient, and - on the evidence of A Sagittariun’s The Circle Stops Somewhere - into raving. Originally issued way back in 2011, the influence of Nick Harris’ first EP under this name can be heard in subsequent works by the likes of Floating Points and Answer Code Request. The two originals are propulsive, melodic and slightly wistful techno that will go well with many DJ styles. Mike Dehnert provides a duo of remixes - one laid-back, one tough.

Adrian Younge
Voices Of Gemma Instrumentals

‘Instrumental’ records often come off like vanity projects that only ever have real appeal for the producer and a very select number of die-hard completists. Not so Adrian Younge’s Voices Of Gemma. The original record purposely pitted plush library-pop against eerie and operatic female vocals to bring about a sense of Twilight Zone uncanniness. Now Linear Labs strip out the singing to allow the just-a-little-too-comfortable instrumentals to work their magic on you.

Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad presents
The Midnight Hour

Adrian Younge (Venice Dawn) has worked with Souls Of Mischief and Ghostface Killah teamed up with Ali Shaheed Muhammad to score the Luke Cage series whilst also working on their Luther Vandross inspired project. The Midnight Hour carries on where the king left off with a heady blend of soul, jazz and hip hop groove. Features guest appearances by the man himself Vandross, as well as Cee-Lo Green, Raphael Saadiq,  Eryn Allen Kane, and many more.

Al Dobson Jr.
Rye Lane Versions

Yes, Rhythm Section. We get it. You’re from Peckham. No need to labour the point. This one actually came out in 2014, but such is the British clubsphere’s appetite for sprightly jazz-house from SE that Bradley Zero’s only gone and bloody pressed it again. What we have here are two takes of Al Dobson Jr.’s found-sound beat-smithery fleshed out into slinky 100-bpm jams by Polish duo Ptaki and Mancunian mainstay Ruf Dug.

Alan Silvestri
Avengers: Infinity War

Island sure knows how to picture disc ‘em. Here’s veteran Alan Silvestri’s (Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump and uncountable others) original soundtrack for 2018’s every-hero-but-Kitchen-Sink-Man Marvel blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War. Appropriately overblown.

Andrea Taeggi
Zimní Král

Berlin boffin Andrea Taeggi (also known as Gondwana and half of Lumisokea) brews a synthetic broth for London’s SM-LL. The album consists of material recorded with archaic analogue equipment at the Willem-Twee synthesis lab/studio in Holland and confirms a continued interest in damp, dynamic textures and hypnotic polyrhythms.

Asylums
Alien Human Emotions

Essex based Asylums, release their second album Alien Human Emotions. Moodier than their first album but no less energetic, their press release compares into a swig of Jagermeister. I guess that makes it strong, dark, and not to everyone's tastes? Released on Asylum's own record label, Cool Thing.

Baptists
Beacon Of Faith

First of all, beautiful album art. Beacons of Faith is the third record from Baptists. Following pretty much the same sound as the bands' previous records, this is one that you don't want to miss. Atmospheric and apocalyptic, this record is available on vinyl LP and CD, and is released on Southern Lord.

Bear Bones, Lay Low / Don't DJ
Plafond 3

After two entries that have seen contributions from Legowelt and Milan W., the third record in BAKK’s Plafond series hosts new work from Don’t DJ and Bear Bones, Lay Low. Both of the jams here take up a full-side, and the artists luxuriate in the length of their pieces. While the latter's collaboration has yielded a psychedelic, New Age-y electronic odyssey in ‘Dissolve Into The Night’, Don’t DJ’s ‘Rag For Rudolf Rocker’ is a tense anti-groove that could be a soundtrack to a piece of contemporary dance.

Black Clouds
Dreamcation

The thick-fogged Black Clouds meld together the heavy, screeching post-metal of acts like Isis with the more plaintive avenues of your average post-rock twinkle sweethearts, making for a sound that flirts with the sinister and ominous before giving way to something wide-eyed and aspirational. Furious noise meets ambient wash on 'Dreamcation', a record that rivals Deafheaven's 'Sunbather' for extracting beauty in the face of brute force.

Blossoms
Cool Like You

Just look at the sleeve? Wouldn't you just want to hang out with those guys? They are like Embrace but with cool lights. Well last time round Blossoms knack of writing catchy post Oasis anthems and adding enough 80s production to get local radio programmers everywhere putting away their Howard Jones LPs was a winning formula.  Now it's that 'difficult' second album. They have a great car. They'll be ok.

Body/Head
The Switch

Free noise rock duo Body/Head are Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth, Free Kitten) and Bill Nace (X.O.4, Vampire Belt, Ceylon Mange). They bring together numerous oxymoronic terms: dark/light, black/white, emotion/analysis. Hence, the name of the band 'Body/Head'. Not necessarily oxymoronic, but you get the idea. The Switch is their second full-length studio album, following previous records for Matador and live albums via Deste Foundation and Feeding Tube Records.

Charlemagne Palestine
Ttuunneesszz Duh Rruunneesszz (Blue TB7 Series)

The highly respected composer and artist Charlemagne Palestine has long adored Moog synthesizers, and started experimenting with them in the 60s. Well now is very different from then, and having been given access to the moog lab he dove right in to create 6 longform drone pieces utilizing as many oscillators as he could imagine. Chastity
Death Lust

A re-issue of demos on Brooklyn label Captured Tracks has fuelled a burgeoning interest in Canadian punks Chastity. Support slots with Priests, Fucked Up, Metz and Chelsea Wolfe have only made people more excited about their debut LP Death Lust. The album revolves around the concept that the pain of living knowing we’re going to die is tempered by the ability to cope with that knowledge. LP and CD on Captured Tracks.

Circling Vultures
Game of Chance

This four track EP is the follow up record by Circling Vultures called Game of Chance. Described as 'psychedelic machine music', this mini album is definitely one to add to your collection. A proper underground mix of club tunes that will make the impending apocalypse seem a little more real. Available on vinyl 12" and released on L.I.E.S.

Cordovas
That Santa Fe Channel

Hailing from Nashville, The Cordovas harmony-laden Americana sound melds the ‘70s folk-rock of California’s Laurel Canyon with the southern rock from the same era. If you like American Beauty-era Grateful Dead, Little Feat circa Dixie Chicken, or more recently, Dawes, then their second long-player, The Santa Fe Channel is for you. LP and CD on ATO Records.

Crippled Black Phoenix
Great Escape

Great Escape is the tenth full-length studio album from dark, epic UK rockers, Crippled Black Phoenix. The seven-piece are led by Justin Grieves and have included numerous collaborators among their ranks in the past. The album swells with anger in places and is unsettling in others. All this is tempered by a certain amount of compassion running through other songs. CD and LP on Season Of Mist.

Crucifix
Crucifix

Reissue of anarcho-punks Crucifix’s long out of print self-titled debut EP. Originally released in 1981 on Universal, in their 5 year existence they became notorious for their blend of d-beat and hardcore punk filled with youthful angst driven by political rage. For fans of Discharge, Crass et al. LP on Kustomized.

CVX
Zibaldone III Of CVX

The third instalment of Rupert Clervaux’s Zibaldone Of CVX series is a collection of ‘multi-angle audio mosaics’ from the London-via-Mallorca sound artist. While Zibaldone III may initially seem obtuse and hostile, if you persevere you’ll stumble on some rather profound stuff. Synthesising snippets of spoken text - poetry, radio broadcasts, lectures, you name it - with everything from lo-fi techno to closing-time piano jazz, CVX has made an oddly compelling work here. Imagine Karlheinz Stockhausen if he’d ever hooked up with Jan Jelinek.

D.R. Hooker
The Truth

So similar in name to Dr Hook but don't be alarmed this is something completely different. It has been voted one of the rarest records of all time and was released in an edition of less than a hundred back in 1972. D.R. Hooker was in fact a robe-clad hippy who wrote surprisingly sophisticated songs that have something of the Randy Newman about them.

Darwin Deez
10 Songs That Happened When You Left Me With My Stupid Heart

He may have had those frizzy tight curls cut off but here he is with a moustache like that and posing top off for an album sleeve. This is his fourth album which sensibly avoids the current vogue for synth rock and electro textures and simply writes good simple guitar pop with tunes you can whistle. Maybe he's ok after all?

David Holmes
Mosaic (Music From The HBO Limited Series)

Mosaic is the latest powerhouse TV series from HBO, directed by big-screen big-dog Steven Soderbergh. Of course, such a production needs a suitable soundtrack, and David Holmes has done the honours here with a set of alternately smooth, eerie, tense and avant moods. This CD and vinyl release is out in the world courtesy of Touch Sensitive.

Derek Bailey & Jamie Muir
Dart Drug

The late Derek Bailey and ex-King Crimson percussionist Jamie Muir get their 1981 collaborative reissued by Honest Jon’s. Dart Drug is a strange record even by the standards of this pair. It’s difficult to identify what kind of … things Muir is hitting at any one point, and Bailey’s six-string quirks are in even fuller effect than usual. Despite (or perhaps because of) their erstwhile impulses, the duo managed to construct an oddly compelling suite of lopsided avant-jazz on this LP.

Diptera
001 [Antenna]

Diptera are a duo who approach club deconstructionism in a rather literal way. First off Activist DJ whips up a quick bit of darkside garage. The resulting tune is then sent over to Wesley who mangles, bends and screws the original into strange new shapes. On 001 [Antenna], the end result is a four-track set that sounds like a Clark mix being funneled through a metal pipe. Szare also springs to mind. Out via Mana.

Dizzy
Baby Teeth

Cutesy Canadian four-piece Dizzy release their cutesily-entitled debut LP via Communion. Baby Teeth (cute) is full of dream-pop niceness, all gently-picked guitar and glottal-stopped vocals and synth playing straight from the book of Springsteen. Sometimes Dizzy are sad, sometimes they’re happy, but they’re definitely always cute.

DJ Residue
211 Circles Of Rushing Water

DJ Residue is the latest alias of the shape-shifting Gunnar Wendel (Kassem Mosse, The Siege Of Troy). 211 Circles of Rushing Water continues in the vein of recent releases on The Trilogy Tapes from Parris and Metasplice. This is erstwhile, obtuse electronica where the instruments and beats often appear near to coalescing into substantial grooves but seem reluctant to go the whole hog. Inga Copeland’s Lolina project springs to mind.

Don't DJ
All Love Affairs Fail But They Never End EP

Wise words from Don’t DJ there. All Love Affairs Fail But They Never End is a somnambulant, wistful collection of techno-noir. Echo Beds
Buried Language

Denver industrial duo, Echo Beds, found themselves locked out of their practice space by bailiffs in 2016. This was due to a seemingly unfriendly crack down on arty types and their unofficial work spaces. After turning bedrooms into recording studios, using improvised equipment to work on their ideas and being emotionally spurred on by what was happening to them and their friends, Buried Language was born. Check it out if Street Sects, Youth Code or Drab Majesty are your bag. LP on The Flenser.

Ed Sheeran
+

Life is pain. That, my dear Norman Records™ customer, is just how it is. Break-ups. Boring jobs. Tax returns. Penalty shootouts. Famine. War. Pestilence. Brexit. There is no escape, and there is no true respite. The moments of happiness, of gaiety and light, are but a dappling of sunshine on the shadowed path of mortality. In every triumph lurks failure; in every victory, defeat. But in the darkest moments, remember that we have Ed Sheeran. We have his debut LP +. We have its ubiquitous and Very Clever Indeed singles like 'The A Team'. We have his MBE. Well technically he has it, but really it was awarded to all of us for battling on through the gallows comedy that is to live and breathe on planet Earth. At least - ahh, so very much at least - we have Ed.

Ed Sheeran
X

The year, 2113; the setting, Earth. The planet is a withered corpse. Ravaged by the climate catastrophes and nuclear wars of the previous century, human life has become impossible to support. Societies have either fought themselves into extinction or set off to colonise Mars. The plastic content in the oceans has destroyed all marine life and turned the water into a strange grey substance with the consistency of tapioca pudding. 85% of the Earth’s surface has become uninhabitable due to the merging of all four of the seasons into one year-long period of ultra-heat. In the arctic circle, on the last remaining ice floe, a single tannoy and a lone polar bear. Over the tannoy, Ed Sheeran’s second studio LP X plays on a loop. The polar bear gazes pensively out over the white wastes. These songs mean nothing to him. He sees the sun dip over the lip of horizon. Six months of darkness are come. He lets out a low grunt, barely more than a whisper. Somewhere in the swirl of his subconscious, he asks himself if he will survive this time around. ‘I need you darling, come on set the tone ...’

Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch
Époques

Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch is a composer and a pianist, and this second album of hers is a mixture of modern chamber music, with her own piano performances bolstered by strings and electronics in order to fully map out her compositions. Epoques is a rich and melancholy listen, both grand and intimate. Released by Fat Cat’s 130701 sub-label.

Eric B. & Rakim
Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em

Originally dropped in 1990, the third LP from Eric B. & Rakim gets the reissue treatment. Though Let The Rhythm Hit ‘Em might not have the commercial clout of something like Paid In Full, this album is the connoisseur's EB & R record. Tunes like ‘No Omega’ sees Rakim spitting some of his savviest bars over beats that encompass both the grittiness of the Bomb Squad and A Tribe Called Quest's sharp jazz-hop.

Fascinator
Water Sign

Whether Johnny Mackay - the guy on the cover of Water Sign and 100% of the members of Fascinator - takes his whimsy seriously or is just having a laff may be up for debate, but you certainly can’t fault him for effort. The eleven pop songs on this LP are called things like ‘Sex Crystals’ and are all administered with an archness that may or may not be knowing. Either way, this should be worse than it is. Imagine a Frankenband constructed from Empire Of The Sun, Darwin Deez and The Happy Mondays that - somehow! - ended up being good.

Discrete Opinion

Sometimes it feels like once you’ve heard one Central Processing Unit release, you’ve heard them all. All those bleeps and bloops can jade one a little. However, something seems to be different with this latest drop from Fleck E.S.C. We can’t quite put our finger on it - maybe it’s the lovely languid bass sounds, maybe it’s the little dabs of abrasive noise he throws into the mix every now and then - but Discrete Opinion has managed to at once slot nicely into the label’s huge Braindance back-catalogue and also distinguish itself from it. Some feat.

Iggy Pop
Bookies Club 870

Iggy Pop was recorded by a local radio station at Bookies Club 870 in Detroit. This album has only ever been available as a bootleg, but now the recording of the gig, from September 26th 1980, is available as a bona fide LP and CD for the first time, speed corrected and restored audio. Iggy blasts through solo classics such as Lust For Life and Nightclubbing and throws in some Stooges classics such as I Wanna Be Your Dog and Search & Destroy for good measure. Double LP and CD on Easy Action.

In the press release for Single Rider, Jenn Champion threatens a record that is a cross between Drake and Billy Joel. On both counts, she delivers. And you know what? It’s bloody good fun.
