Amy Winehouse
Back To Black

Back To Black was the second and final album by Amy Winehouse. It was regarded as a classic pretty much upon on its release. Here she found her ideal musical partner in Mark Ronson whose soulful production was the perfect backdrop to her incredible voice. Contains Rehab, Love Is A Losing Game and Tears Dry On Their Own.

Andrew Liles
The Flesh Creeping Gonzoid: Speciality Offal & Other Choice Cuts

Andrew Liles has worked within Nurse With Wound, Current 93, as well as with the likes of Gnod, Faust, and Cosey Fanni Tutti and many more plus his immense solo back catalogue. Here we have a massive box set of 6 CDs of unreleased material, with a bonus DVD of bonus goodies such as outtakes limited releases. Limited to only 500.

Blood Red Shoes
Get Tragic

Look how airbrushed they are now. This is probably the point in the biography of Blood Red Shoes where all hell breaks loose. They'd already split up once and gone off in very separate ways before reconvening until the guitarist broke her arm after falling off a motorbike. Her mother might well be furious with her but it led to the band using more synths and exploring new sounds and then going to LA (as you do) to make this 'comeback' album. It's one of those that could be brilliant or terrible. Let's find out...

Calexico
The Black Light (20th Anniversary Edition)

The Black Light by Calexico was originally released 20 years ago so it seems fitting that we now have a 20th anniversary version to savour. It was the band’s second album, but probably the first to get them noticed. Their mix of mariachi brass, flamenco, indie rock and jazz wrapped up in dusty Americana was seamlessly blended to create a sound that is very much their own. Features a guest appearance from Howe Gelb of Giant Sand. Double LP and CD on City Slang.

Causa Sui
Free Ride

Free Ride by Causa Sui is a modern psych-rock classic that has been out of print for ten years out of the eleven that it’s been alive. It was the second album by the Danish outfit who feature Jonas Munk, who remastered this for reissue, among their ranks. The album rocks like a lorry full of bricks in a similar way to Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Mudhoney and Kyuss but also showcases the more contemplative side of psychedelia on the title track.  Double vinyl LP or CD with 20-minute live bonus track on El Paraiso Records.

Cave
Allways

Heady funkadelia jammers Cave are back, so come a-diving into their… rock chamber. Once again on Drag City, the nowadays quintet put this one together after a world tour and it’s quite a melting pot of giddy grooves. There’s electric bass, acid bass, gentle crescendos, muzak vocals, lots and lots of guitar and lots and lots of funk.

Charalambides
Charalambides: Tom and Christina Carter

Though Tom and Christina Carter have enjoyed long and varied solo careers, they are also known for their long running acid-fried improvisational duo Charalambides. You'd think from the title that this was a 'best of' of some sort but no this is a new studio album, delving deeper into their hypnotic world. Recorded over two sessions with no overdubs this is sure to be a fascinating take on the duo at work.

Charles Bradley
Black Velvet

Despite the sad passing of both Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley, the music of Daptone lingers on and here we get a posthumous collection of recordings by soul man Charles Bradley. It is a celebration of his entire career but is now shallow 'best of' delving into unknown corners of his back catalogue and containing unheard recordings made at sessions for all three of his studio albums. Lovingly compiled, there's a big box set too with bonus 12" and assorted ephemera.

Chris Carter
Miscellany

Chris Carter the Throbbing Gristle / Chris & Cosey / Carter Tutti Void electronics wizard has collected some of his best solo work on this exquisite box set. You get the following albums, plus a booklet of unseen images (mainly of synthesizers):- Mondo Beat (1985) – clear vinylDisobedient (1998) – double purple vinyl, includes new track 'Disobedient Redux'Small Moon (1999) – double white vinyl, includes new track 'Small Moon Redux'Archival Recordings 1973 to 1977 – blue vinyl – unreleased The CD edition does pretty much the same. All on silver CD editions.

Christopher Lennertz
Lost In Space

‘60s classic sci-fi show, Lost In Space has been remade for Netflix. With Season 2 already commissioned it’s time to bang out a vinyl version of the score by Christopher Lennertz whose works also include Agent Carter and Medal Of Honour. Double coloured vinyl LP with inserts on Lakeshore.

Cliff Martinez
Hotel Artemis (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Cliff Martinez scored the film Drive with great success. Now the producers of Drive has brought him in to score dystopian thriller Hotel Artemis, starring Jodie Foster. Following a similar style to Drive, Martinez relies on synths to create a dark and tense soundtrack. In addition to the score by Martinez, the album features an exclusive song by Father John Misty along with classics by The Mamas & The Papas, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Elyse Weinberg.

Current 93
The Light Is Leaving Us All

David Tibet's never-ending Current 93 project continues to do its thing with The Light Is Leaving Us All, another foray into the deep web of psych folk that will most likely shake you to your very core. An interesting lineup characterises this one, including Nurse With Wound's Andrew Liles, renowned contemporary pianist Reinier van Houdt and folk songwriter Alasdair Roberts. Plus others, just in time for the Halloween season.

D.U.D.S.
Immediate

Has a record ever been a co-release between three labels before? Well LP on Red Wig / Opal Tapes / Et Mon Cul C'est Du Tofu? are all involved in putting this out but it's the involvement of Opal Tapes that is the headline here. The North East England label usually specialises in the sort of esoteric electronica and techno Ant writes about but D.U.D.S are firmly in the post punk category. Their blend of the Fall and Liquid Liquid certainly has dancefloor impact and this album (whoever is releasing it) should not be missed.

Daniel Knox
Chasescene

Chicagoan vibrato-on-legs Daniel Knox scrambles Jarvis Cocker and Nina Natasia to lend their talents to new album Chasescene. Knox’s heartfelt, mongrel style of piano playing and weary, croaky voice drive his cinematic and noirish representations of nighttime heartbreak, intrigue and disarray in the windy city.

Doug Paisley
Starter Home

Doug Paisley’s fourth album, Starter Home, is his first since 2014’s Strange Feelings. Recorded in and around his native Toronto, the folk and country singer/songwriter used various friend’s home studios with many of them starring on the record too. The time lag between albums has only seen Paisley transform into an even better songwriter. LP and CD on No Quarter.

Elvis Costello & The Imposters
Look Now

Decca may have passed on The Beatles all those years ago but they’ve managed to snare Elvis Costello for his first album in five years, Look Now. Collaborating with his backing band The Imposters for the first time in 10 years,  it was a recent tour of the States with them that made him realise that their past records could have had more of the live oomph they had been producing. So, fired up with a new energy, they headed to the studio to set the record straight. Come as a 2LP or 2CD deluxe edition with 4 bonus tracks or as a standard LP or CD on Decca.

Father John Misty
Live at Third Man Records

Shy and retiring songwriter Father John Misty (aka Josh Tillman) made a rare public appearance in September 2017 and it just happened to be at Third Man studios on Nashville. Much to his embarrassment presumably, the whole thing was taped and has now been released on an LP. The songs cover all three Father John Misty releases and sees him strip things back a bit compared to the lavish studio arrangements.

Fleet Foxes
First Collection 2006 – 2009

Fleet Foxes are having a little party, and to help them celebrate the 10th anniversary of their critically acclaimed eponymous debut album they are releasing a tasty box set: First Collection 2006-2009. It will include a 12” vinyl LP of their first album plus two 10” vinyl EPs - Sun Giant EP and Fleet Foxes EP the latter having only ever been available as a CD-R. A fourth record will contain eight b-sides and rarities. There will also be a 32-page book and some other bits and bobs. Also available on CD, but in CD size. It’s a limited edition release so get your skates on Fleet Foxes fans! Box Set on Nonesuch.

Georgia Anne Muldrow
Overload

Georgia Anne Mudrow can count Erkyah Badu, Mos Def, and Blood Orange as fans. So the question you should be asking yourself is why aren't you? Overload is Mudrow's first album on Brainfeeder, which turns out to be the perfect home for her gently mutated funk and soul. Her commitment to restraint her makes her a vital foil to the maximalism the Brainfeeder stamp of approval usually means.

Goat
World Music (Picture Disc)

The debut record by insane Swedish rockers Goat, highly recommended for everybody who loves squealing guitars, screaming ladies, and catchy afrobeat grooves. Combining psychedelic rock with lots of ethnic rhythms, World Music scored highly in many of 2012’s end-of-the-year lists. Great volumes of tribal distortion on this one.

Gregor
Silver Drop

Aussie youngster, Gregor, likes to make an eccentric brand of pop music. On his debut, Silver Drop he takes his cues from Talking Heads, Durutti Column and Arthur Russell. The lyrics are emotionally charged with Gregor having decided to lay himself open rather than hide behind what he thought would have been ineffectual metaphors. LP on Chapter Music.

Hairband
Hairband

Very good Scottish shop Monorail put their money where their mouth is by releasing the debut LP from this Glasgow collective. Hairband (good that isn't it?) contain members of Spinning Coin and Breakfast Muff and play the sort of joyful, elastic music that you can imagine coming out of Glasgow particularly when you throw in influences such as Orange Juice, Television and Life Without Buildings.

Hiss Golden Messenger
Devotion: Songs About Rivers and Spirits and Children

North Carolina country/folk type collective Hiss Golden Messenger, led by MC Taylor, have been quietly going about their business for a decade now, releasing 9 albums in that time. It wasn’t until Merge got hold of them and released 2014’s Lateness Of Dancers that they were noticed outside of certain circles. Now, however, their albums grace the upper-echelons of critic’s end-of-year lists regularly. Devotion: Songs About Rivers And Spirits And Children takes us back to their early years with three albums: Bad Debt, Poor Moon and Haw. This box set will also include and exclusive rarities album, Virgin Fool. 4LP box set or 4CD box set, both of which are lavishly packaged.

How To Dress Well
The Anteroom

We all can laugh now at how much I hated the last How to Dress Well album but maybe Tom Krell hated it too as he's followed it up with one long piece of psychedelic music that taps into the long forgotten experimental core of his band. This could be the best or worst thing you hear all year but at least he's left that boyband stuff back in 2016.

Janek Schaefer (For Robert Wyatt)
What Light There Is Tells Us Nothing

Scholarly sound artist Janek Schaefer has been doing his thing while garnering acclaim for at least two decades now, and here he is with a new work that showcases his transient sound at its most accessible. The new record (For Robert Wyatt) - 'What Light There Is Tells Us Nothing' was constructed from parts of Wyatt's 'Cuckooland' album and is particularly resonant, now adapted from the performance into one side of the record. The piece is complemented by 7 new equally poignant compositions. Well, count me in. Limited edition (1000 copies) of the transparent gold vinyl LP, also on CD; on Temporary Residence.

Jessica Moss
Entanglement

Entanglement is album number three from Jessica Moss. Moss earned her stripes with a fifteen year stint in Canadian post-everything band Thee Silver Mt. Zion (and all variations on that name). She has also worked with such luminaries as Vic Chesnutt and Carla Bozulich. The title of this album explains it all, really: She uses violin and her voice to create twisting, swirling, overlapping - tangling, if you will, soundscapes. LP and CD on Constellation.

Klaus Johann Grobe
Du bist so symmetrisc

In case anyone was wondering, this is a group not a man (like a Swiss version of Danny Wilson I guess). They play the sort of mixture of pulsing kraut inspired electronics and wild psych moves that you will enjoy if you like people like Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Cavern of Anti Matter. They throw a few dance moves and mutant funk in too. Let's kraut boogie.

Konami Kukeiha Club
Snatcher (Original Videogame Soundtrack)

1988 video game Snatcher, a cyberpunk adventure designed by Hideo Kojima no less, has a wonderful soundtrack that has never previously seen the light of day on any proper music medium. Attributed to Konami Kukeiha Club, the Snatcher soundscape is full of dramatic floaty synths and exciting neo-brass: great listening for fans and non-fans alike. Double LP on Ship To Shore PhonoCo.

Mumford & Sons
Delta

You know when a band is expected to shift a few units when the press release bangs on about the massive tour the band are about to embark on. In this case it’s the trust-fund Wurzels (thank you, Charlie Brooker) Mumford & Sons. Their new and fourth album filled with anthemic folk-rock is locked and loaded and ready to go. Produced by master polisher Paul Epworth whose production credits range from Adele to Friendly Fires to Thurston Moore. Lovely double LP and CD on Island.

Papercuts
Parallel Universe Blues

Parallel Universe Blues is the 6th album by Papercuts, AKA singer/songwriter Jason Quever. Quever recently relocated from San Francisco to Los Angeles and the album’s lyrics are informed by this upheaval. Despite a longer break between albums than usual, Quever’s excellent songwriting and atmospheric production that recall’s bands such as The Velvet Underground, Spiritualised and Jesus and Mary Chain are both firmly in place. White vinyl LP or CD on Slumberland.

Peter Broderick
Two Balloons

Post-rock indie-ambienteer Peter Broderick’s original soundtrack to Mark E. Smith’s - no, sorry, it’s Mark C. Smith’s animated short Two Balloons, which follows the aeronautical adventures of two lemurs. The music, which was partly recorded using wire recorders and AM consoles, has won ‘Best Original Film Score’ at Amsterdam’s New Renaissance Film Festival. Since Broderick’s favourite film is Madagascar, you'll find a rippin’ techno rework of the score’s main motifs on the flipside.

Rattle
Sequence

It's hard to imagine a band that using just drums and vocals would be an effective entity but Rattle sort of works. They consist of two drummers,  Katharine Eira Brown and Theresa Wrigley, who weave a percussive spell adding dual vocals along the way. This follow up to their well received self titled debut explores this territory further by way of four long form tracks which gives the duo space to explore their sound further.

Richard Devine
SortLave

Richard Devine returns after six years with his new album Sort/Lave. It sees the Atlanta, Georgia-based electronics whizz throwing up opposing textures using his custom built modular system. The pieces flit between sandpapery percussion and glorious ambience. The album was conceived and recorded over the last two years. Triple LP or CD on Timesig, a Venetian Snares imprint.

Richard Swift
The Hex

Richard Swift sadly died on 3rd July, 2018. He was 41 years old. The gifted musician, songwriter, producer and filmmaker had worked with a number of acts in his career including Damien Jurado, The Shins, Foxygen (producing their first and best album) and The Black Keys. The Hex is Swift's final album which he completed shortly before his death. He put everything into this record - from cathartic songs about his late sister and mother to a patchwork of influences such as Doo-Wop, Wall of Sound, Funkadelic, Captain Beefheart, Bo Diddley and Link Wray. It’s a real shame that it will be his last album, but it looks like he has unwittingly saved the best until last. LP and CD on Secretly Canadian.

Ryley Walker
The Lillywhite Sessions

Dave Matthews Band recorded an album with producer Steve Lillywhite which was scrapped at the label’s behest. Now, this bit confuses me - the press release here describe the album in terms I would not match with Dave Matthews Band such as ‘art rock’ and ‘masterpiece’. However, they are terms I can associate with Ryley Walker who has tried his hand at re-recording the album, The Lillywhite Sessions. Although the Dave Matthews Band version was scrapped, some tracks showed up on their 2002 album Busted Stuff. From hearing those tracks I think they might sound rather fine in the hands of Ryley Walker. LP and CD on Dead Oceans.

Sandra Kerr & John Faulkner
The Music From Bagpuss

Hello all 40+ somethings out there. You'll remember big saggy 70s cloth cat Bagpuss from your favourite childhood television show and the beautifully constructed folk soundtrack it snored around? Brings back memories doesn't it? Well the soundtrack actually works as a lovely album even without the nostalgia associated with the cat and now you can get it on a wonderful Christmas present-ready 'shop window' edition vinyl or book back CD with all your favourite slightly hip people talking about the album in an accompanying book. Wake up, and look at this thing that I bring!

Secret Machines
Ten Silver Drops

Secret Machines were a New York-based Texan three-piece space rock band. They featured two brothers, Benjamin and Brandon Curtis along with drummer Josh Garza. Ten Silver Drops was the band's second album, originally released in 2006. Benjamin Curtis left after this album to form The School Of Seven Bells, however, he sadly died in 2013. Ten Silver Drops followed-up their debut LP Nowhere Is Nowhere making their galactic melodies and Bonham-esque drums even bigger in the process. They made one album after this before disbanding, however, internet rumours of a reunion are rife. 180g numbered limited edition vinyl including a bonus LP of B-sides and rarities. On Run Out Groove.

Spacemen 3
Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To

Originally released as a bootleg, the recordings here known as Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To are demo recordings from 1986, and they capture the nascent Spacemen 3 well on their way to becoming the psychedelic behemoths they ultimately were. This reissue, for CD and double LP, features remastered audio and is out on Space Age Recordings.

Steve Mason
About The Light

The Beta Band are a distant image in the rear view mirror of Steve Mason these days. Following their break up he continued under the King Biscuit Time moniker before releasing Boys Outside (2010) under his own name. About The Light is his fourth solo album. Previously all of his solo albums have been made alone, this time he got his live band involved from the start to try and capture the energy of their live show. Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur, Kaiser Chiefs) produced the album. LP and CD on Domino imprint Double Six.

The Beatles
The Beatles (White Album)

The Beatles. Now there's a thing.  The White Album (initially known as just the Beatles) was the blueprint of what became known as 'the classic over indulgent double album that would have made a great single LP'. It was released 50 years ago today and still much of it sounds like Guided By Voices 'August By Cake'. This super duper re-issue isn't just a rehash of the original thing with posh packaging  - it contains the Esher demos  - a 27 track 'unplugged' demo that has only been heard by the most in the know the Beatles fans.

The Caretaker
Everywhere At The End Of Time - Stage 5

The second last instalment in The Caretaker's epic 6-part exploration of dementia. By now we are lost and confused, the world is starting to stop making sense. Everywhere At The End Of Time at the end of time achieves this through repetition, dislocation, and dread inducing noise. This is the sound of losing yourself.

The Fall
I Am Kurious Oranj

In 1988 The Fall, in collaboration with the Michael Clark Company, staged an experimental ballet about William of Orange's ascension to the throne. Mark E Smith and co. handled the music side of things and the ensuing album was christened I Am Kurious Oranj. Reissued by Beggars Banquet to celebrate the album's 30th anniversary.

The Radiophonic Workshop
Possum

Possum is a new British horror film from the mind of Matthew Holness (Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place). It is the first time that The Radiophonic Workshop have scored a film. Their 50 years as pioneering electronic sound-makers, known for the original Dr. Who theme and who have counted Delia Derbyshire among their number, are the perfect fit for Holness’ weird vision. 6 panel digipak CD on Room 13.

The Wedding Present
Huw Stephens Session

Twelve years ago Leeds (or Otley as I once heard Dave Gedge specify at gig once) favourites The Wedding Present recorded four covers for Huw Stephens’ One Music radio show. One of them is Take That’s Back For Good.  Here’s Huw Stephens Session for your delectation on 10” vinyl EP or CD.

Thought Gang
Thought Gang

So who are Thought Gang then? Well just David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti that's all. The duo have of course worked together for many years, most famously on the Twin Peaks soundtrack but here they move away slightly from the cool jazz and cinematic sounds of earlier collaborations towards more experimental textures with acid/free jazz textures and spoken word narratives. They've been working on this since 1992 so it's about time we all dipped in.

Thurston Moore
Klangfarbenmelodie.. And The Colorist Strikes Primitiv

Klangfarbenmelodie….And The Colourist Strikes Primitiv by Thurston Moore was originally released in the same year as his Psychic Hearts album. In the Sonic Youth timeline that’s in between Washing Machine and A Thousand Leaves. It’s also in a time before people read Kim Gordon’s Biography…..Anyway, what we have here is a reissue, on vinyl for the first time, of Thurston Moore's vicious noise-rock set recorded with free jazz drummer Tom Surgal. It was originally released by Corpus Hermeticum, a label owned by Bruce Russell from The Dead C. Russell edited the recording for this release and contributes new liner notes. Heavyweight white vinyl on Glass Modern.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra
IC-01 Hanoi

Here’s an unexpected release: Whilst recording their recent LP ‘Sex & Food’, Unknown Mortal Orchestra found themselves regularly jamming with local musicians at Phu Sa Studios in Hanoi. With fuzzy guitars and sporadic saxophone, it’s an instrumental exploration of the jazz, fusion and avant-garde which usually remain at the fringes of their sound. 'IC-01 Hanoi' is an insight into a specific time for Unknown Mortal Orchestra; an unexpected mish-mash of jam sessions featuring frontman Ruban Nielson’s father, and local Vietnamese musicians in the capital of Vietnam.

Upper Wilds
Mars

Upper Wilds are a three-piece featuring members of Parts & Labor and Models Pterodactyl. Following in the noise-pop footsteps of their parent bands, on Mars, they being to ponder what living there might be like. Guest appearances from Mark Shue (Guided By Voices) and Katie Eastburn (Young People) among others. LP and CD on Thrill Jockey.

Various
Brainfeeder X

We all like a bit of Flying Lotus's imprint Brainfeeder but it can be hard to keep up with their deluge of releases. So this handy compilation could be a good place to get acquainted or re-aquainted with the LA based beats people. It's a 4LP (or 2CD) collection of their best bits containing all your favourites such as  Lapalux, Teebs, DJ Paypal and of course Sir Fly Lo.

Various
Midday Moon, Ambient and Experimental Recordings from Australia & New Zealand 1980 - 1995

Aussie label Bedroom Suck brings us Midday Moon, an excellent new double-LP comp of ambient and experimental musics out of Australia and New Zealand taken from the period of 1980 to 1995. The recordings have origins on various micro-labels, private pressings and the artists' own personal archives. Melbourne DJ / archivist Rowan 'Sanpo Disco' Mason has delved deep into a largely uncelebrated world of latter twentieth-century Aussie New Age and beyond. And we're glad he did.

yellow6
Reflect

A huge amount of yellow6 material to celebrate the project’s twentieth anniversary. A five CD boxset of, rather impressively, new music, including three Looking Glass albums and two Drone albums, all colour-coded. Those drone ones are particularly interesting, as apparently they are yellow6’s  reaction to years of having his music described as drone and disagreeing… Well, here now he has made some Drone, along with much else besides.
