Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad presents
The Midnight Hour

Adrian Younge (Venice Dawn) has worked with Souls Of Mischief and Ghostface Killah teamed up with Ali Shaheed Muhammad to score the Luke Cage series whilst also working on their Luther Vandross inspired project. The Midnight Hour carries on where the king left off with a heady blend of soul, jazz and hip hop groove. Features guest appearances by the man himself Vandross, as well as Cee-Lo Green, Raphael Saadiq,  Eryn Allen Kane, and many more.

Baptists
Beacon Of Faith

First of all, beautiful album art. Beacons of Faith is the third record from Baptists. Following pretty much the same sound as the bands' previous records, this is one that you don't want to miss. Atmospheric and apocalyptic, this record is available on vinyl LP and CD, and is released on Southern Lord.

Bear Bones, Lay Low / Don't DJ
Plafond 3

After two entries that have seen contributions from Legowelt and Milan W., the third record in BAKK’s Plafond series hosts new work from Don’t DJ and Bear Bones, Lay Low. Both of the jams here take up a full-side, and the artists luxuriate in the length of their pieces. While the latter's collaboration has yielded a psychedelic, New Age-y electronic odyssey in ‘Dissolve Into The Night’, Don’t DJ’s ‘Rag For Rudolf Rocker’ is a tense anti-groove that could be a soundtrack to a piece of contemporary dance.

Black Clouds
Dreamcation

The thick-fogged Black Clouds meld together the heavy, screeching post-metal of acts like Isis with the more plaintive avenues of your average post-rock twinkle sweethearts, making for a sound that flirts with the sinister and ominous before giving way to something wide-eyed and aspirational. Furious noise meets ambient wash on 'Dreamcation', a record that rivals Deafheaven's 'Sunbather' for extracting beauty in the face of brute force.

Body/Head
The Switch

Free noise rock duo Body/Head are Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth, Free Kitten) and Bill Nace (X.O.4, Vampire Belt, Ceylon Mange). They bring together numerous oxymoronic terms: dark/light, black/white, emotion/analysis. Hence, the name of the band 'Body/Head'. Not necessarily oxymoronic, but you get the idea. The Switch is their second full-length studio album, following previous records for Matador and live albums via Deste Foundation and Feeding Tube Records.

Brian Case
Plays Paradise Artificial

Brian Case from Chicago post-punk bands Disappears and FACS is onto his third solo release with Plays Paradise Artificial. Here he takes the essence of his previous two albums and distills further his work with Disappears and FACS to its bare bones to create a skeletal and spooky musical world. Transparent yellow vinyl, limited to 300 copies on Hand In The Dark.

CVX
Zibaldone III Of CVX

The third instalment of Rupert Clervaux’s Zibaldone Of CVX series is a collection of ‘multi-angle audio mosaics’ from the London-via-Mallorca sound artist. While Zibaldone III may initially seem obtuse and hostile, if you persevere you’ll stumble on some rather profound stuff. Synthesising snippets of spoken text - poetry, radio broadcasts, lectures, you name it - with everything from lo-fi techno to closing-time piano jazz, CVX has made an oddly compelling work here. Imagine Karlheinz Stockhausen if he’d ever hooked up with Jan Jelinek.

David Holmes
Mosaic (Music From The HBO Limited Series)

Mosaic is the latest powerhouse TV series from HBO, directed by big-screen big-dog Steven Soderbergh. Of course, such a production needs a suitable soundtrack, and David Holmes has done the honours here with a set of alternately smooth, eerie, tense and avant moods. This CD and vinyl release is out in the world courtesy of Touch Sensitive.

Dead Cross
Dead Cross

Dead Cross (2018, Ipecac), not to be confused with Dead Cross (2017, Ipecac), is the latest headbanging release by Southern California weird hardcore/metal supergroup Dead Cross (2015 - present, Ipecac). They’re Mike Patton, Dave Lombardo, Justin Pearson and Michael Crain, and their EP consists of two hyperactive new songs and two remixes of songs from last year’s album.

Diptera
001 [Antenna]

Diptera are a duo who approach club deconstructionism in a rather literal way. First off Activist DJ whips up a quick bit of darkside garage. The resulting tune is then sent over to Wesley who mangles, bends and screws the original into strange new shapes. On 001 [Antenna], the end result is a four-track set that sounds like a Clark mix being funneled through a metal pipe. Szare also springs to mind. Out via Mana.

DJ Residue
211 Circles Of Rushing Water

DJ Residue is the latest alias of the shape-shifting Gunnar Wendel (Kassem Mosse, The Siege Of Troy). 211 Circles of Rushing Water continues in the vein of recent releases on The Trilogy Tapes from Parris and Metasplice. This is erstwhile, obtuse electronica where the instruments and beats often appear near to coalescing into substantial grooves but seem reluctant to go the whole hog. Inga Copeland’s Lolina project springs to mind.

Don't DJ
All Love Affairs Fail But They Never End EP

Wise words from Don’t DJ there. All Love Affairs Fail But They Never End is a somnambulant, wistful collection of techno-noir. Don’t DJ’s originals range from purring electronica in the vein of Jan Jelinek (‘Veles’) to lengthy and pensive synth ambiences (‘Two Of Pentacles’). Newworldaquarium provides a deep, minimal and ethereal re-rub of ‘Veles’.

Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch
Époques

Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch is a composer and a pianist, and this second album of hers is a mixture of modern chamber music, with her own piano performances bolstered by strings and electronics in order to fully map out her compositions. Epoques is a rich and melancholy listen, both grand and intimate. Released by Fat Cat’s 130701 sub-label.

Fascinator
Water Sign

Whether Johnny Mackay - the guy on the cover of Water Sign and 100% of the members of Fascinator - takes his whimsy seriously or is just having a laff may be up for debate, but you certainly can’t fault him for effort. The eleven pop songs on this LP are called things like ‘Sex Crystals’ and are all administered with an archness that may or may not be knowing. Either way, this should be worse than it is. Imagine a Frankenband constructed from Empire Of The Sun, Darwin Deez and The Happy Mondays that - somehow! - ended up being good.

Songs

The 2006 debut of avant-pop musician John Maus, from before he rose to real prominence. Songs is super-electronic and rich with nostalgic longing for many things, especially the sound and culture of 1980’s pop. Fair enough John, it was a pretty evocative time. Features Ariel Pop on two tracks. Songs has been reissued by Ribbon Music.

LWW
3PE

LWW is none other than Portland, Oregon's Luke Wyland with a three-lettered moniker describing his explorations in joyous repetition and softly-stated minimalism. Harsh vowels need not apply, but some rounded ones may accidentally appear. The project has already acquired the Nils Frahm / Piano Day seal of approval for the track 'PNO' (told you) which made the Frahm official PD playlist this year. A record on which Wyland has allowed unadorned, unembellished single takes to form and evolve naturally. Which is cool. LP on the always reliable Leaf Label.

MC Paul Barman
(((echo chamber)))

MC Paul Barman has kept a relatively low profile since the release of 2009’s Thought Balloon Mushroom Cloud LP, offering only a mixtape and a handful of guest verses in the intervening years. A near-decade on and the wordsmith’s wordsmith drops (((echo chamber))). The LP’s lengthy track list allows for Barman to dazzle from every angle - his near-spoken, rhymes-within-rhymes style still impresses almost twenty years after he got his start. His standing in the community is represented in the album’s credits - MF Doom, Open Mike Eagle, DJ Yoda, Mark Ronson and ?uestlove are among those who’ve lent a hand, with the latter contributing six productions.

Michael Giacchino
Speed Racer (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

2008’s Speed Racer is a post-Matrix epic from the Wachowskis, adapted from a manga. Seasoned soundtracker Micheal Giacchino provided the musical accompaniment, and this is what we have here on this double LP from Mondo, as well as new liner notes and some flash new artwork. High energy sounds, incorporating and building upon themes from the original series.

Michael Giacchino
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

You may not know him by name, but chances are you've heard the music of Michael Giacchino. He's one of the current big-hitters in the world of film-scoring, and in the past couple of years he’s composed for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, War For The Planet Of The Apes and The Incredibles II. Furthermore, he's also had a crack at a couple of films from the rebooted Jurassic World series, and this Mondo release presents his music for Fallen Kingdom across two vinyl. It’s fun John Williams-y bombast.

Michael Nau
Michael Nau & The Mighty Thread

The Mighty Thread is not a really bad conversation on a message board that deviates into people agreeing to disagree, but rather the bonus name for Michael Nau, who made a bright, folksy record in Some Twist. He's back with this knottily poetic follow-up that embraces ambiguity and uncertainty with odd writing and performing decisions: different members of his makshift band placed their instruments in different rooms of the house, with an amp in the bathroom and a piano in the living room. This seemed to encourage a strange, communal vibe for a record that feels like a crew going one level extra to help out each other.

Nigeria Fuji Machine
Synchro Sound System & Power

Nigeria Fuji Machine is a grouping of high-powered drummers and singers in Lagos, performing the popular Yoruba Nigerian music named Fuji. Fuji is a thrilling, super-percussive sound, that is highly popular in Nigeria but somewhat overlooked in the West in favour of highlife and the like. Correct this now, with Synchro Sound System & Power, a newly recorded set on Soul Jazz.

Oliver Coates & Laurie Tompkins
Ample Profanity

Oliver Coates is a prodigious talent. He’s been too good for too long now for anyone to put in a salient argument to the contrary. Here we see him returning to Slip, the label that put out his excellent collaborative LP with Mica Levi, for a short record of avant-anarchism alongside Laurie Tompkins. Ample Profanity is a disorientating listen - at one point it will resemble the kindergarten punk of early Micachu & The Shapes, then a few seconds later it’ll be on an Einstuerzende Neubauten flex.

Rayland Baxter
Wide Awake

Rayland Baxter, a man with a first name I can scarcely believe in, seems to be pulling a Bon Iver on this album, which grew out of a period of seclusion spent in an old rubber band factory. Fifty songs written, of which ten made it onto this here finished album, produced by Butch Walker. Soulful, thoughtful modern rock. On ATO Records.

Rizzla
Adepta

Rizzla’s star may not shine as brightly as the likes Kelela, Total Freedom and other Fade To Mind luminaries, but gosh darn it can they tear up a club. Anyone who slept on 2015’s essential Iron Cages EP can set things right by copping the producer’s debut LP Adepta. These eleven tracks of pure dancefloor power bristle with violence, rage and intent. Imagine early Arca with absolutely no time for pretence.

Ross From Friends
Family Portrait

Give Rossie the CDJs, Marcel. While he may have originally emerged back in 2015 as the clown prince of lo-fi house, Ross From Friends showed off a more mature aesthetic when he debuted on Brainfeeder in early 2018. He follows up that EP, Aphelion, with his first full-length. Family Portrait is a well-rounded distillation of the producer's multi-faceted style, drawing as much influence from his new boss Flying Lotus as it does the fidgety compressed club jams of contemporaries like Project Pablo.
