Mordant Music & David Rudkin
Pinvin reMMix

An esoteric conversation that touches on faith and history held between David Rudkin and Sukhdev Sandhu, blended in with some queasy abstracted sound from Mordant Music. The whole thing is powerfully odd, disorientating my thinking in just a few minutes. Pinvin reMMix is served up on a single-sided square 7” flexidisc.

Mr Dan (featuring Guilty Simpson)
Firewater

We apparently have Run The Jewels to thank for Mr Dan’s new musical angle, presented for the first time on this 7”. Seeing them play put Dan on a heavy, aggressive beat-making tip, and Firewater is a strong example of such. MC duties provided by Guilty Simpson, with an instrumental version on the flip. On Speedy Wunderground.

Mr Dan feat. Guilty Simpson
I'm Gone / I’m Gone (instrumental)

I’m Gone is a very fun new track from Mr Dan, with a properly thumping beat and traces of some lovely samples from somewhere. Vocal flow is provided by Guilty Simpson in the second collaboration between this producer and this MC, though the first one for which they were in the same room. The track is presented in both vocal and instrumental versions on this 7” release, which is limited to 250 copies.

Nailhouse
Nailhouse

These are from Newcastle, Australia but their sound is not unlike the rainy stink you might have thought come from a pre-makeover Newcastle, England. They play a very intense form of sludgy rock which reminds me of their fellow countrymen the Birthday Party and endless churners Swans. Over torrential guitars lyrics are spat out at the listener, not for the fainthearted.

Naytronix
Mister Divine / Shadows

You may well have seen Naytronix’s Nate Brenner already, as part of tUnE-yArDs touring band. But you haven’t heard the music of this solo project yet, as this single is the first ever release under the name, in advance of his upcoming album. Funky-weird 70s style goodness. Mister Divine / Shadows is released by City Slang.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds
The Dying Of The Light

Mr Noel Gallagher recently released his latest album with his High Flying Birds, named Chasing Yesterday. Possibly quite a revealing title for the former Oasis man to choose? Anyway, The Dying Of The Light is taken from it, and is backed with an exclusive demo version of ‘The Girl With X-Ray Eyes’. The 7” is out on the Sour Mash label.

Nots
Live at Third Man Records

Jack White continues to offer both gigs and releases to up and coming bands via his Third Man Records label and shop: good on him. Nots are the latest band to get White-aided opportunities, with this 7” document of their live set. They sound like a fierce and essential live act on this evidence, with a serious bite to their post-punk via no-wave sound.

Paid Reach
I Ping

The second 7” vinyl from Paid Release, a new pseudonym for house upstart Gunnar Wendel aka Kassem Mosse. These releases push Mosse’s unique sound into even weirder, off-grid zones. Ping sounds both nasty and funky and Experience Change has an abstract, weightless quality that you can’t shake off. They’re definitely bangers, but we wouldn’t recommend trying to dance to them.

Palehound
Molly

Palehound, which is basically just songwriter and guitarist Ellen Kempner, release Molly on vinyl 7” through Heavenly records. Although the stand-out feature is Kempner’s jagged and wired guitar playing, this miniature indie classic is also powered by tight repetitive bass, groovy drumming and distinctive vocals.

Paul Weller
I'm Where I Should Be

Paul Weller’s latest album was Saturns Pattern, and I’m Where I Should Be is the third single to be taken from it. Weller’s been in the game long enough that both we and he know what a Paul Weller song should sound like: accordingly, this track does land just where it should be. Exclusive B-side ‘Open Road’ rounds out the 7”.

Peluché
The Guy With The Gammy Eye

More ecstatic musical adventure from Speedy Wunderground, here. Peluche take silvery guitar riffs a la Beach House and wrap them around proggy ambient textures that wouldn't be out of place on either an old Kayo Dot record or a newer Camel one, before a driving beat pushes the song into a psychedelic vortex. "The Guy With The Gammy Eye" makes no element of the process as its focus, even deliberating on the placement of its desperately reverberating vocals. A wonderful myriad of myriads.

Permit
Permit Vol. 1

Ha! Brilliant! They’re not wrong. Indiana based Permit sound like a double time Thin Lizzy, a raucous and fun filled affair with a garage punk-rock flare. Injected with Zeke like energy it’s house party madness to full effect, will get you up on your feet and dancing, but with sub two minute tracks they leave you sweaty and wanting more. Cheeky little buggers.

Peter Buck
You Must Fight to Live On The Planet Of The Apes

Peter Buck of R.E.M fame has worked on a huge variety of side projects as well as spending time on R.E.M. Here’s a bonus one for fans of the man - a garage cover version of the Mummies hit "You Must Fight To Live On The Planet Of the Apes". Cool, laid back and rocking. 7” vinyl. 1000 copies released only. One for the completists.

Peter Doherty
Kolly Kibber

This single, taken from Pete Doherty’s recent Hamburg Demonstrations album, references the doomed character from Graham Greene’s Brighton Rock novel: Kolly Kibber, whose death sparks off the whole plot. The track is backed by a live rendition of the none-more-Doherty song ‘Weed Smoker’s Dream’. White label 7” on BMG.

Peter, Bjorn and John
Breakin’ Point (single)

Announcing itself with a surely self-referential whistle (remember that single?), Breakin’ Point heralds the first Peter, Bjorn and John album in many years. This advance single is a sweet and catchy piece of melodic pop with lush swoony vocals. These 3 guys know how to make a tune eh? Released as a 7” on the band’s own record outfit, INGRID.

PJ Harvey
The Community Of Hope

A 7” from the most recent album, The Hope Six Demolition Project, from PJ Harvey, The Community of Hope is a jangly, catchy tune with Harvey’s stellar vocals and a catchy chorus which will have you grinning all wide and humming along all day. A good ol' pop tune.    7” vinyl.

Power
Live at Third Man Records

Here's a blast from the past; 70's Aussi alt-rockers Power have regenerated their Live at Third Man Records EP. As a shitstorm meld of garage, punk and just about whatever else goes, this raucous concoction creates exactly what the Melbourne incepted group strived for in the first place - chaos.

Primitive Calculators
I’m Fucked / Bad

Primitive Calculators took more-or-less 3 decades off between their early work and their later, Nick Cave-prompted return: now they have some brand new music for us to hear. I’m Fucked / Bad is a pair of strong, Suicide-via-Australia vibed synth-pop, pressed to coloured vinyl by Emotional Response.
