Timber Timbre
Timber Timbre

Timber Timbre is Toronto based songwriter Taylor Kirk, who has earned a reputation for the atmospheric wizardry of his mesmerising live performances. This self titled release charts his musical journey from mournful, lo-fi bedroom music to his more advanced studio work creating ethereal and intensely visual soundscapes.

Tin Man
Keys of Life Acid

From L.A. via Finland, Johannes Auvinen is now in his 14th year of making acid destroyers as Tin Man. This is music steeped in the historic influence of Chicagoan House, with a blueprint updated through a unique filter. Keys of Life Acid offers 3 tracks of nocturnally drifting 303s, bubbling journeys and dizzying grooves; one of which invites you to waltz. Repress 12" on Keys of Life.

Tobias Bernstrup
27

Post-punk, Electro, and synth wave reissue label Dark Entries look closer to now with this reissue of Italo-disco synth producer Tobias Berstrup’s EP 27. Taking two mixes from the original release and adding some unreleased material from his Re-Animate Me album sessions. FFO Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode.

Todd Albright
Detroit Twelve String Blues & Rags

Todd Albright is an artist immersed in the music of the past. Based in Detroit, he has spent years learning his way around 1920’s and 1930’s blues music, and his fast-moving fingers give new life to the tunes of the masters (think Blind Lemon Jefferson and Leadbelly for example). Detroit Twelve String Blues & Rags is full of just that, and it's released by Jack White’s Third Man Records.

Tom Holkenborg
Dark Tower (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Dutch multi-instrumentalist and composer Tom Holkenborg AKA Junkie XL, who cut his teeth in groups such as A Forest Called Mulu, Empyrean Dub, and Mambo Jambo went on to soundtrack films including Black Mass, Batman Vs. Superman, Deadpool and Mad Max: Fury Road. His latest is for the adaptation of Stephen King’s Dark Tower. Intense stuff.

Tony More
Tonight

Tony More, aka Marzio Benelli and Andrea Venturoli, is the Italian disco collaboration that specialised in the sumptuous use of retro synths. The Elka Synthex, Roland TB-303 and TR-909 are just some of the hardware featuring in this gorgeous slab of lovesick electronica. All the material on this Vinyl has been specifically, and expertly, remastered for its new pressing.

Torn Hawk
Wormquest

Coming at ya from waaaaay over on the other side, Torn Hawk makes their debut outing on the Unknown To The Unknown label with Wormquest. Over the four tracks on this wax there will be some funky mechanical stuff, techno reinforced with guitars and a hefty dose of floor-filling insanity. 12” EP on UTTC.

Townes Van Zandt
Texas Rain

As the ‘90s began, a rejuvenated Townes Van Zandt began recording duets with artists that were admirers of the country singer/songwriter. Willie Nelson, Doug Sahm, Emmylou Harris, Jerry Jeff Walker and Freddie Fender were among those who contributed and gave some of Van Zandt’s most famous songs a new lease of life. Texas Rain was the result. Released on a limited run in 2001, Texas Rain has been fully remastered to audiophile standard, pressed onto vinyl and repackaged to include a 20 page colour booklet. First 1000 copies are pressed on clear vinyl.

Trailer Trash Tracys
Althaea

Drifting from the standard song structure and into a much more experimental and indie sound, Trailer Trash Tracys give us their second full length on Double Six entitled Althaea. A great mix of softly sung vocals and varying genres from Japanese tropical to Latin influenced indie. Available on special edition turquoise vinyl, heavyweight black vinyl and CD.

Trance
Tapes

Trance is Jürgen Petersen, a German sound-maker who was compared to Brian Eno in his early 80’s heyday. Tapes compiles tracks from some of the extremely rare self-released tapes that Petersen produced later in his career, rescuing these works of gorgeous new-agey ambience for a new generation. 12” EP on Growing Bin Records.

Transistor
The Horde

Franck Vigroux and Ben Miller present their Transistor project on new album The Horde. They met in New York in 2009 and now the scuzzy, abrasive electronics of Vigroux meet Miller's huskily irascible voice for a potently furious sound that recalls the collaborative works of Mika Vainio and Alan Vega. Their live shows have laid waste to many a sound system and now they're coming to your stereo.

Traversable Wormhole
Sublight Velocities

Another slice of the audio dagger from Traversable Wormhole on Prurient's Hospital Productions label. Known elsewhere as Adam X, the 'Wormhole takes you on a journey through thudding kicks, bristling hats and percs, and lurking drone layers that can only mean one thing - evil. Evil, and that thing called techno. Evil.

Tres Demented (Carl Craig)
Brainfreeze

Carl Craig’s entirely unhinged surging blast of techno, Brainfreeze, gets a welcome reissue on the Memento label. The flip side contains a bonus remix by Luciano. The track was originally released in 2006 and cemented him as one of the most important names in the second wave of Detroit’s dance music scene.

Tribe Of Colin
Wide Berth EP

London based producer and NTS radio presenter Tribe Of Colin is, I suppose, what you could call semi-mysterious. With only an incredibly limited cassette out on 5 Gate Temple, he returns with more lo-fi, cassette toned techno rhythm experiments, this time self-released, and equally limited. Think Dean Blunt meets Hieroglyphic Being with a harder techno backbone.

Tubular Brass
Tubular Bells

Well why not: a version of Mike Oldfield’s classic progscape Tubular Bells, re-scored for a twenty-eight piece brass ensemble! They have in fact done a great job, using different aspects of the brass repertoire to bring out nuanced variations on the piece. Tubular Brass also features a synth solo from Hannah Peel.

Tuff Love
Resort

Young Glaswegians Tuff Love have been sporadically sprinkling EPs around for the last few years: now the time has come to compile Junk, Dross and Dregs (their titles, not mine) into one convenient package. The name of the game is gorgeous, hazy guitar pop with more than a touch of shoegaze shimmer. Released by Lost Map.

Tuxedo
Tuxedo II

The second record by Tuxedo (Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One) is, remarkably, yet more funky than their first! Tuxedo II seems to be making a pitch for Tuxedo as the heirs of George Clinton and Nile Rodgers, being packed with grin-inducing grooves and big pop hooks. Proper party music, released by Stones Throw.

Twinsmith
Stay Cool

Taking a step back from the in your face poppier productions from their last album, Twinsmith have stripped back and gone for a more personal touch. Stay Cool brings softened and hazy pop-rock that lands smack in the centre of a venn diagram consisting of Phoenix, Fleetwood Mac, and Currents era Tame Impala.

Tycho
Awake Remixes

Tycho’s Awake was a perfect distillation of the group’s melodic electro-rock, mixing krautrock textures and dense guitars. On this vinyl LP remix album all those lush instrumentals are rebuilt by an exciting range of producers. Com Truise beefs up Awake for the dancefloor, Bibio goes avant-lounge and all the collaborators add unique touches to wonderful tunes.

Umoja
707

Umoja was the bubblegum pop project of South African musical all-rounder Alec Khaoli. Their crucial album 707 was released in 1988 (at the heart of apartheid) with the intention of bringing people together across race boundaries. In doing so, 707 also defined the bubblegum music style. Now reissued on vinyl and CD (but not tape) by Awesome Tapes From Africa.

Un Drame Musical Instantané
L'Homme A La Caméra

L’Homme A La Camera is a 1984 score for Dziga Vertov’s seminal 1929 film The Man With A Movie Camera, recorded by a group of French composers with Jean-Jacques Birge at the helm. This double 12” release accompanies their sounds with modern remixes and reworkings from artists including Eltron John, Jorge Velez and Thurston Moore! A panoply of treats. Clear vinyl double LP on DDD.

Unknown
Grey Area, Volume Five

Grey Area, in case you weren’t aware, is the label team-up between Auxiliary and Horo. The concept is that you just know what producer(s) is / are featured on each record, so that you just have to follow your ears and enjoy the tracks on their own merit. So all we can tell you about Grey Area, Volume Five is that the tunes are potent ones. Four-track 12” release.

Unknown Path
Pathfinder, Volume One

While ASC may be one of the standard bearers for the Grey Area sound, his label Auxiliary serves as a vital portal into the scene, and the other artists exploring this evocative, hypnotic space. Unknown Path appears to be a fresh proposition in the field, but displays a keen instinct for the kind of delicate yet weighty approach that typifies this curious, modern twist on techno.

Unqualified Nurse Band
Debasement Tapes

Unqualified Nurse Band play blasted underground rock & roll that hammers like a bad headache through twelve tracks in half an hour. Debasement Tapes indeed: these Nurses know their rock history, but treat it with a mocking irreverence en route to messing things up their own way. Red vinyl LP on the Reckless Yes label.

V/Vm
Brabant Schrobbeler

Back when he didn't have a mane of bubbly curls and called himself James - Leyland Kirby was better known for his insane project V/Vm a kind of cross between experimental and sound collage/comedy act that couldn't be more different from his later solo and the Caretaker work. Here is a vinyl pressing of his experiments into 'new beat' an unacknowledged part of Manchester's dance music canon.

v1984
Pansori

New EP from the still very new producer v1984, aka Christopher Ramos. Pansori is an adventure in electronics, constructed with a cool, sleek aesthetic. Tracks don’t necessarily coalesce around rhythms so much as absorb them on their way to where they are going, and it's a journey full of drama and textural interest. 12” on Knives.

Valve Studio Orchestra
Fight Songs: The Music of Team Fortress 2

Ipecac continue to excel in the “what?!” category, pressing the soundtrack to multiplayer first person shoot ‘em up game Team Fortress 2. Celebrating it’s 10 year anniversary, and it is still going strong, and still receives critical acclaim. Vinyl comes with Audio download code and poster, both versions come with game download code.

Anyway, psych rock seems to be putting forward something of a peace offering with this fun Rolling Stones tribute: Stoned - A Psych Tribute To The Rolling Stones features bands such as Pure X, Pink Velvet, The Vacant Lots and Yeti Lane.

Motor City Remixes

Accompanying the vinyl reissue of Motor City, Sand Circles’ (aka Martin Heterich) slab of neon synth melancholy is this set of remixes of the original material. Some emphasise the Detroit associations, some strip out the dance in favour of the drone. 4 different approaches, from producers including Abdulla Rashim and quiltland. 12” on Posh Isolation.

Various
Magpie / Buzzard

The enigmatic Wah Wah Wino label continue a killer run of house excursions with this white label 12” vinyl titled Magpie/Buzzard. These two tunes are heavy enough for the dance-floor, but are also extremely weird. Jazzy drum programming, off-kilter rhythms and squeaky melodies set the surreal tone.

This compilation album is the brother of Tim Burgess’ new book, in which he goes looking for certain records recommended by certain musicians (Iggy Pop) and even certain authors (Ian Rankin). Jamal Moss, the human being behind the Hieroglyphic Being, applies his special techno technique to three tunes by Public Image Limited, Kissing The Pink and Bigod 20. Various / Marcel Dettmann
Selectors 003 - Marcel Dettmann

Berlin Techno maestro Marcel Dettmann takes a look back to the past with this compilation, the third in Dekmantel’s Selectors series. Selectors 003 is a set of eleven ‘pre-techno’ tracks that were influential to Dettmann’s formative years, including Cabaret Voltaire and A Thunder Orchestra. All have been remastered, and some have been tweaked by Dettmann too. CD and double LP editions.

Vercetti Technicolor
Tarantola

Tarantola is a film that only sort of exists: it is the fictional film that the plot of actual film The Editor revolves around. Nevertheless, it does have a soundtrack that entirely exists: look, you can hold it in your hands! Vercetti Technicolor has produced a suite of full-on giallo synth music that fits the concept to a tee. Vinyl release on Lunaris Records.

Vermont
II

Sophomore efforts are always difficult, but Vermont simply continues where they left off. On II, German synthesizer-whisperers Marcus Wogull and Danilo Plessow (from Motor City Drum Ensemble) once again show a world brimming with vintage analog electronics, where they have created exciting upbeat soundscapes approaching the krautrocky. A fine example of why we love it when Kompakt makes exceptions on its strict minimal-techno-producers-only policy.

Vex Ruffin
Conveyor

Major full-length release from Vex Ruffin. Conveyor is a groovy-sweet brew of New York disco and funky breaks, and it is especially notable for featuring the first musical appearance in three decades from hip-hop hero Fab 5 Freddy, who contributes vocals to ‘The Balance’. Vinyl release on Stones Throw.

Via App
Secret Rotation

Brooklyn’s Via App drops a four-tracker on the NYC off-kilter techno imprint BANK. The 1080p affiliate’s latest shows off her versatility: “Extraction” pumps with an antsy groove, whilst “Living Decoration” throbs with hyper-precise mechanical samples. The record closes out with a proper clanging dungeon stomper but “Desert Acid” stands out with its ponderous and sludgy percussion and decay.

Vicram
Squirrel Acid EP

Introducing - Vicram. This mysterious dancefloor-lurker is reluctant to allow Press officers to give much of the game away, however upon first listen his Squirrel Acid EP is an IDM-fuelled slab of acidic techno. At three tracks long, this worthy investment is short, sweet and definitely mind-boggling.

Violeta Parra
La Cueca Presentada por Violeta Parra

Death Is Not The End’s latest archival find is La Cueca Presentada por Violeta Parra, a rare 50’s compilation of the Chilean folk genre of Cueca. Violeta Parra presents songs gathered from the rural areas of the country and presented with her wonderful musical touch. She also gives spoken introductions to pieces.

Virginia Wing
Forward Constant Motion

Virginia Wing’s second LP ‘Forward Constant Motion’ sees the band deviate towards a more expansive, focused sound but still retains some of the cosmic darkness of debut LP ‘Measures of Joy’. Still showing signs of a propensity for dreamlike, otherworldly themes, this record melds a successful hybrid of the sleepy new age of Laurie Anderson and Homework-era Daft Punk, resulting in a bold and imaginative contemporary pop record. Includes a digital download card.

Virginia Wing
Rhonda

Probably one of the better Record Store Day releases this year, ace London quartet Virginia Wing tease you a couple of new tracks from what will be their brand new record in due course. If it's anything like the last one it will appeal to fans of Broadcast, Stereolab and fans of all things kraut and pop.

Voiski
Soundless Pattern Of The Tortoise’s Walk

Cutting edge tuneage from Voiski here, following up on L.I.E.S. and Dekmantel releases with this single on Sheik N Beik. Soundless Pattern Of The Tortoise’s Walk has a pair of melodic but relentless dancefloor dominators, with plenty going on in the mix at every moment. A-side track ‘Let Down Disco’ is especially winning. 12” on Sheik N Beik.

W//JT, SoS//NJ, MS//HT, SoS//NJ
BROS007

The Bros are back, and, while this might be a surprise to you, that is actually a good thing. These latest seasonal collaborations on the Brothers label include the finest of dub, techno, and grime, and perhaps a little house for good measure, for two times twelve inches of pure (listening! and dancing of course) pleasure.

Warehouse
Super Low

Warehouse are an Atlanta GA band who tap into the marvellously fertile Athens jangle pop/art rock scene of the early 1980's. In fact the band provide the perfect R.E.M like backing for the remarkable growling vocals of Elaine Edenfield who bears an uncanny resemblance to Pylon's Vanessa Briscoe Hay. Quite remarkable. This could be a really interesting one when you bear in mind the band have also been listening to Deerhunter rather a lot I'd imagine.

Warp Transmission
Tamam Shud

Warp Transmission are a Finnish group who are deadly serious about fiercely-blasted dark psychedelia. Taman Shud, which was first released as a cassette, is so full of overdrive, effects and distortion that the textures start to mutate into something alien. Remastered for CD and vinyl and released by Creepy Crawl. Pow!

Waterpark
SpeedLine Connect / Sun Runner

Waterpark is the latest alias for producer Khotin. The nice thing about creating a new outlet for your music (complete with its own label imprint) is that you can build all the music around a particular theme: Waterpark seems to be going with a watery party vibe. Speedline Connect / Sun Runner feels like a good time on a sunny day, except that parts of the track have been submerged in the pool… 12” release.

Wavves
You’re Welcome

Ten tears into the Wavves project, Nathan Williams has gone from super lo-fi DIY to major-label-signed and now back to some sort of midpoint. You’re Welcome, the sixth Wavves record, is released on Williams’ own Ghostramp label, but features all the production and songwriting lessons that he’s learned along the way. Good times!

Waxahatchee
Ivy Tripp

Katie Crutchfield started out in the wordy punk band P.S. Eliot, where she played with her sister Alison (now of Swearin' fame). She went on to collaborate with Chris Clavin of Plan-It-X Records, later releasing an honest-to-god folk punk classic in American Weekend. Her sound has expanded enormously since; where that record was skeletal as can be, Cerulean Salt was a torched indie rock record in which confession met composition. Ivy Tripp is another lyrically incisive record that proves Crutchfield to be getting better still at songwriting.

Weird Dreams
Luxury Alone

Weird Dreams is the solo work of Doran Edwards. This album is particularly solo, as no other hands touched it until after it was mixed. That means we can guarantee that Luxury Alone sounds exactly as it was meant to. The making of the album spanned some tough times for Edwards, and there is an emotional catharsis in Luxury Alone’s synth-based songcraft. On Tough Love.

West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band
Vol. 2

West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band formed with very clear goals in mind (just look at that utilitarian descriptive name), and they achieved them, even if they did not achieve fame. Vol. 2 is a bold and freaky set of lovely psychedelic music, deeply imbued with 60’s vibes. It’s reissued in mono here, for the first time. On the Jackpot label.

Whirr / Nothing
Split

Nothing are that noisy shoegaze band who were very mean about poor old Slowdive once. They blend the aggressions of noise punk with heart-melting melodies and hope it all comes together in the moment -- one of the songs here kind of sounds like their take on Interpol, to be honest. They're joined here for a split with Whirr, who make a kinder, dreamier kind of haze, the kind where guitars are aimed skyward. Feed this 12" back into your amp.

White Hills
Stop Mute Defeat

New York psych juggernauts White Hills try something a little bit new here, winding in the guitars a little bit and cranking up the thick industrial production. Stop Mute Defeat is a bad-trip of a record, with influence taken from Cabaret Voltaire and William Burroughs. It's a heavy one and no mistake. Out on Thrill Jockey.

White Violet
Ages

White Violet’s process for this record involved a year-long process of writing pairs of songs, each pair consciously developing on the themes of the previous. The resulting album Ages ended up being about time and ageing and adulthood, with songs that manage these themes intimately and maturely. Released on vinyl by Normaltown Records.

Wicked Witch
Under Your Spell

Previously unreleased madness from the 80s and the world of Wicked Witch. Dirty drum machines, analog screams, fuzzy guitars and bass lines. Starts of seemingly electro funk, with an abrasive groove, but develops into an almost electronic kraut psych record. Four tracks and two remixes from DJ Slyngshot and YYPYY.

WIFE
Standard Nature

Irishman and former black metaller James Kelly aka WIFE unleashes another EP of slow, textural modern electronic beats that are equal parts downcast and technicolour. You won't hear much from his Altar of Plagues past here apart from a signing to extreme label Profound Lore, but what you will find are some songs, buried underneath scattered layers of intricately-constructed beats and synths.

Wild Honey
Torres Blancas

The name Wild Honey would suggest a Beach Boys influence and the laid back grooves of their ‘Friends’ album is certainly evident but these laid back summery songs more recall Astrud Gilberto having a party round Stereolab’s house. The fact that Sean O Hagan (High Llamas) is on arrangement duties should tell you all you need to know.

Will DiMaggio
Fusion (Broadcast Mix)

Will DiMaggio shows off his capabilities as a jazzy synth-pianist and as a catchy house producer with this single-sided 12” release on Future Times. Future (Broadcast Mix) is a slick and smiling creation, with wobbling synth-keys and fabulous chunky bass making the dancefloor a compelling place to be.

William Onyeabor
Crashes In Love (Version 1)

Plenty of people fell in love with the music of Nigerian artist William Onyeabor after Luaka Bop released Who is…? two years ago. Now, they are reissuing his entire catalogue! Crashes In Love was Onyeabor’s first record, and is out there in two different forms. This is the original, ‘normal instruments’ mix.

Wilsen
I Go Missing In My Sleep

Tamsin Wilson founded Wilsen at university has have now gone onto release their first full length record ‘I Go Missing In My Sleep’. The eleven-piece album was mainly written and crafted in a small apartment in New York, and the music we can hear on this record replicates that feeling. A gentle mix of indie-pop and dream-pop that is available on Vinyl LP and CD.

Winter Family
South From Here

Winter Family is Ruth Rosenthal and Xavier Klaine’s dark pop project. South From Here, which was written in Brooklyn and recorded in Tel Aviv, engages in a critique of Israeli society through thickly textured walls of synth-throb and submerged vocals. Rich and dramatic and cool. Released by alt.vinyl.

Wolf Vostell
Dé-coll/age Musik

Fluxus founding member and mechanical collage assemblist Wolf Vostell produced the sound-works gathered here over the course of several decades: some of his earliest material appears here. De-coll/age Musik is a radical approach to objects and sounds that yields some amazing textures. First released in 1982, this collection is now reissued on vinyl by Soave.

Woods
Love Is Love

Written and recorded in the two months following the US election, Love Is Love is a collection of songs that try to bring together and fix the America that Woods think is becoming fractured and broken with hatred. Gentle beats and soft vocals are in abundance on this record that is available on Vinyl LP, CD and Cassette tape.

Wormrot
Voices

The choice grindcore band for pet goats living in squats and a general frontrunner for the genre, Wormrot are totally back with a new record on Earache! It's called Voices and follows up 2010's Abuse and continues their fast dirge with twenty-three tracks of intense grind dash.

XOSAR
Let Go

You better get your shovel out to dig into this density from Xosar. BOP004 is the eight tracker from the San Franciscan, now Berlin based, producer. On this one she isn't holding back at all, with the low end rumbling through and destroying all in its path at various tempos. There is peak time aggression in 'The Pit', early hours gliding on 'Sail 2 Elderon' and tripped out euphoria on 'Gnome Circle'. If you want all the frequencies then pick it up on vinyl LP from Black Opal.

Yerba Mansa
Yerba Mansa

Crashing into action with a flurry of distorted guitars and schizophrenic drums is s/t - the contorted stab from Manchester's noisy outfit, Yerba Mansa. Hearing the group live is a must, but hearing this collection of anarchic expeditions is the next best thing. Sizzling, stifling and ever so slightly ear-scraping - this is a must for any lover of untamed guitars.
