Acid Bowie
Acid Bowie

For those of you who like an element of lucky dip to your record buying, look no further. We are told this is called Acid Bowie, but we have very little information about this enigmatic 8-track white label release. The artist remains a mystery but there are also claims that this is an unheard Ziggy Stardust album recorded following a trip to space, whatever that means! Take from that what you will, but I imagine the words ‘acid’ and ‘trip’ are worth noting.

Albert Hammond Jr.
Francis Trouble

Albert Hammond Jr is not only the one from the Strokes but also is the offspring of Albert 'You Can Thank Your Lucky Stars' Hammond. He has quite the life being a wealthy contented man but he just can't stop the rock and therefore this is his fourth album away from the Strokes. Plus there's all those Strokes albums you forgot about.

Alvin Lucier
Criss Cross / Hanover

The composer, best known for his 1970  tape piece I Am Sitting in a Room, composed Criss-Cross for the twin electric guitars of Stephen O’Malley and Oren Ambarchi. Each player e-bows a single semitone, alternately rising and falling in pitch, revealing a surprising variety of tonal effects and phenomena. Hanover employs similar techniques played by an ensemble of saxes, electric guitars, piano, bowed vibes and viola. Innovative and beautifully strange music based on elegant concepts from a minimalist master.

Bert Jansch
A Man I’d Rather Be (Part II)

The Man I’d Rather Be (Part II) is a 4 LP or 4 CD box set documenting the solo work of the legendary and influential guitarist Bert Jansch. The focus is on the late ‘60s and early ‘70s  where Jansch worked from a wider palette, mixing pop, blues and baroque into his folk sound. Bassist Danny Thompson and drummer Terry Cox are the most regular rhythm section used on these recordings and there are guest appearances from Mary Hopkin, Tony Visconti and Dave Mattacks. Many guitarists from Jimmy Page to Neil Young and Johnny Marr to Graham Coxon hold Bert Jansch in high regard.

Cocteau Twins
Treasure

4AD's Cocteau Twins re-issue series continues with 'Treasure'. This was their third album and the first to feature Simon Raymonde. It also marks a departure from their early minimal goth post punk sound to their patented fluttering dream pop that they would continue to produce. Contains several classics such as 'Ivo'  and 'Lorelei'.

Cocteau Twins
Head Over Heels

Head over Heels is Cocteau Twins second album and contains many of the bands great early songs such as 'Sugar Hiccup', 'The Tinderbox (of a Heart)' and 'When Mama Was Moth'. The sound of a band finding their feet in spectacular fashion. Now pressed onto 180g vinyl from the original masters their is no better time than to get this one in your collection.

Dead Sea Apes
Recondite

To the casual listener, Dead Sea Apes sound is dripping with heavy psych. The Manchester band don’t want the casual listener though, they want the people who’ll draw back the curtain and look inside to find the subtleties hidden beneath their weighty quilt. Recondite compiles choice morsels and alternative versions of songs showing the, perhaps previously unrealised, transient nature of their music with nods to the past and future direction of their sound. Double vinyl LP On Cardinal Fuzz, limited to 300 copies. Includes download with 3 bonus tracks.

Death And Vanilla
The Tenant

Here is a first vinyl press for Death and Vanilla's unreleased live score for 'The Tenant' (Roman Polanski). They recorded it in 2015 in Spain alongside a showing of the film and shows the bands at their most cinematic, avant garde and minimalist.  Amazing that people still have anything to do with Polanski's work but it's a funny old world.

DZ Deathrays
Bloody Lovely

The latest LP from Down Under’s answer to Royal Blood is as Aussie as a Kangaroo eating Vegemite out of a cork hat. It’s called Bloody Lovely because singer Shane Parsons considers the phrase “brutal and beautiful, and super Aussie”. You could kind of apply that description to the record too. Lots of riffs, lots of choruses, lots of fun. At the time of writing, the top comment on the lyrics video for single ‘Total Meltdown’ just reads ‘yeah c*nt’. Too bloody right mate!

Editors
Violence

English glumsters Editors release their 6th album 'Violence' the follow up to the moribund 'In Dream'. Lead track 'Magazine' showcases a vibrant if poshly produced sound that is sure to bother alternative playlists everywhere. Less of the Interpol these days and more of the Killers widescreen rock I suppose.

Green Seagull
Scarlet Fever

Green Seagull take their influences from ‘60s bands such as The Left Banke, The Association and The Kinks, forming part of the growing neo-psych scene in London. Their authentic take on freakbeat and baroque pop makes Scarlet Fever one of the more interesting releases to look forward to in 2018. LP and CD on Mega Dodo.

Holger Czukay
Cinema

Massive big box set of material from the legendary Can experimenter Holger Czukay containing lashings of his tape splicing work plus collaborations with the likes of Jaki Liebezeit and Cluster & Eno. Contains unreleased and rare material plus a DVD, 36 page booklet and a download code.

Jason Sharp
Stand Above The Streams

If you can't get enough of Colin Stetson then try Jason Sharp. He also plays the saxophone and uses it to make immersive and layered electro-acoustic music. Following the phenomenal and Norman-loved A Boat Upon Its Blood, he produces four ten minute pieces which he says is an abstracted survey of organic nature. It's synth elements also fit in nicely with the latest vogue for synth composition influenced by John Carpenter, Tangerine Dream et al.

John Bramwell
Leave Alone The Empty Spaces

John Bramwell does it the hard way. Playing 300+ shows per year, travelling in all weathers in a camper van armed with only a guitar and a dog. No wonder it's taken him time to come up with his first album of original material away from I Am Kloot. His careworn voice and melancholy songwriting has won him lots of fans and this album is inspired by his travels taking the music to the people.

Johnny Jewel
Digital Rain

Just six months after Windswept, which featured some of his memorable contributions to the latest Twin Peaks series, Mr. Jewel’s ready with the next batch. The concept of Digital Rain is to evoke precipitation, which Johnny doubtless experiences little of in Los Angeles, and to convey liquid structures. Expect lots of gentle transitions between vignettes of rain samples, melancholy synths, dripping glockenspiel and the like.

Kuniyuki Takahashi
Early Tape Works (1986-1993) Vol. 1

Versatile house/techno producer and sound designer Kuniyuki Takahashi (aka Forth, Hrr Five, Koss and others) has had some charming early material exhumed by Music from Memory, with a second instalment on the way as well. This volume begins with serene, beatless atmospheres (‘Night at the Seaside’, ‘Day Dreams’) before gaining some rhythmic traction (‘Drawing Seeds’). From there it’s mainly arpeggio sequences, envelope sound design and clattery drum machinery. Very good indeed.

Mark Renner
Few Traces

Not a lot of people have heard Mark Renner’s material from between the years 1982 and 1990, but now RVNG Intl invite you to join those limited numbers. Few Traces surveys Renner’s homemade post-punk, occasionally new-romantic sound, with highlights from albums mingling with compilation tracks and never-before-released cuts. CD and Double LP editions.

Michael Chapman
Fully Qualified Survivor

If anyone could be described as a Fully Qualified Survivor it's Michael Chapman. He can't have known that though when he recorded this album in 1970. This one showcases Chapman's acoustic troubadour side with a series of British folk rock that is up there with the best of the genre. Also features an early appearance from Mick Ronson before he was nabbed by Sir David Bowie.

NHK yx Koyxen
Parallel Tempo

NHK yx Koyxen, the producer with the most pronounceable name in the business, presents a new EP of his unique work. Parallel Tempo’s five tracks takes that electronic music you like so much and pulls it apart into jagged new forms, some of them more danceable than others. 12” EP from the -OUS label.

Palm
Rock Island

The nervously invigorating Palm have impressed us plenty already and return with an obnoxiously captivating record in Rock Island. It swerves away from their common, jangly lexicon and then points back towards it, offering a noisy, danceable, jubilant and melancholic record of stutter pop. They make loops sound like they're being played over and over, one at a time.

Pink Floyd
London 1966/1967

This pair of vintage Syd-era jams from the film Tonite Lets All Make Love In London have been available in various collectible formats over the years, and now resurface as a ten inch. There’s not much evidence of psychedelic free rock that predates this, a fearless exploratory dive into uncharted territory armed with little more than rudimentary musical skills and freshly turned-on brains, that stands up beside all kinds of Kosmische excursions and improv pals AMM. Interstellar Overdrive is the Ronseal moment, while Nick’s Boogie is way more frazzled than the title suggests.

Pinkshinyultrablast
In The Hanging Gardens

Pinkshinyultrablast return with their latest 10", almost definitely cementing their position as the best shoegaze band to come out of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Dreamy synths and vocals from vocalist Lyubov, taking notes from forefathers such as My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins. On Club AC30 - limited run of 'rose sunshine' coloured vinyl.

Preoccupations
New Material

Sisters of Mercy fans rejoice as ominous people Preoccupations delve further into the bowels of the early '80s goth-rock scene. Their previous album was the worst thing we've ever heard and after struggling to sit through lead track 'Espionage' hopes for this are low. However these are people who were once very great indeed so you never know.

Robert Cohen-Solal
Les Shadoks

Les Shadoks was an animated French TV show that ran from 1968 till 1974, and its one that has built up a bit of a cult reputation over time. The soundtrack to this scintillating show was put together by Robert Cohen-Solal, a GRM-certified electro-acoustic composer with a playful touch. Whether you are a fan of the show or not, you really ought to hear this fabulously eclectic music. On WRWTFWW Records.

Robert Hood
Paradygm Shift - Volume 3

Robert Hood completes a three part techno odyssey with a final 12", one track, one side. On the A we're on a stripped back, hypnotic polymetric journey; the B side meanwhile swings the groove out almost into deep house. These two cuts compliment each other, clearly the work of a celebrated Detroit pioneer.

Rrose & Lucy
The Lotus Eaters II

This particular decade will probably be remembered as one where the cutting edge of techno became severely twisted. Riding the sharpest point are Rrose and Lucy, who come together on this EP to unveil a typically claustrophobic, swirling mass of dance floor disorientation. Muscular, ethereal and as sideways as you like.

Schneider TM
Remainder

Remainder is the debut film presentation of Omer Fast, and Schneider™ has done the duties of soundtracking the piece. The music was built up through improvisations alongside endless viewings of the film, until both musician and director agree that the music had woven itself right into Remainder’s fundamentals. Released by Song Cycle in an edition containing both LP and CD.

Spacemen 3
Dreamweapon

Dreamweapon by Spacemen 3 documents the time they played live in the foyer of Watermans Art Centre in Brentford at a screening of the Wim Wenders film Wings of Desire. The audience didn’t care for it too much but the 45 minute set of droning guitars will sure please fans of the band. This reissue includes outtakes from 1987 that were recorded in the lead up to the making of the Playing With Fire album. Double LP and CD, which comes in a fancy 6 panel card sleeve that the press release feels the need to tell us is shrink wrapped!

The Lovely Eggs
This Is Eggland

This Is Eggland, the new album from The Lovely Eggs sees the psych-punks working with a producer for the very first time, somewhat eschewing their DIY ethos. They haven’t chosen just any old producer either, they’ve gone for the man who remodeled the sound of The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev, Dave Fridmann. The title is a pun on This Is England, the Shane Meadows film, and a comment on the current state of Britain. Thematically, the duo preach how living a non-conventional, non-conformist lifestyle is the best way to be.

The Monochrome Set
1979-1985: Complete Recordings

The Monochrome Set are one those largely unknown but hugely influential British bands. Their post-punk/indie-pop/art-rock sound has been an influence on the likes of The Smiths, Blur and Franz Ferdinand. The groups leader, Bid, claims that a diet of 17th century poetry and Leadbelly are responsible for their sound, but one could argue that was misleading. 1979-1985: Complete Recordings is just that, and a treasure trove of music that deserves more attention. Available as 6LP/CD set and 6CD set on Tapete.

The Myrrors
Lunar Halo

Tip: If you want to be psychedelic then replace the 'i' in your name with a 'y'. This is just what the Myrrors have done and it has stood them in very good stead. This latest release sees them in firm raga/freak out mode, an extended thirty minute transcendental improvisation cut over two sides of wax.

Tor Lundvall
A Dark Place

Tor Lundvall's 'A Dark Place' comes over a decade since the release of his previous album, and is a remarkably open work of sincerity and emotional expression. Dealing with themes of loss and the passing of time, it's also inextricably linked to the passing of his father. An honest, darkly beautiful piece of work.

Unwound
New Plastic Ideas

New Plastic Ideas was the third album by Olympia, Washington’s post-hardcore noise-rockers Unwound. It was originally released in 1994 on the classic Kill Rock Stars label. The guitar-bass-drums soar with hair-raising speed and indefatigable pounding all served up at the odd angles that were de rigueur back in them there ‘90s. Reissue LP on Numero Group.

Vangelis
Blade Runner

Composed by Vangelis for Ridley Scott's 1982 classic, the Blade Runner soundtrack has assumed legendary status amongst fans of synthesizer music. Its combination of classical compositions with synth work perfect mirrors the futuristic atmospheric ambient noir of the original film. A classic of the genre.

Vashti Bunyan
Just Another Diamond Day

Just Another Diamond Day by Vashti Bunyan, released in 1970, is notable for being a gentle folk classic, but also for being her only album until 2005’s Lookaftering. The album tells the tell of the time she left civilisation to join Donovan’s community of creative hippy types in the Hebrides. It was produced by Joe Boyd and features the musical talents of Robin Williamson of The Incredible String Band, and Simon Nicol and Dave Swarbrick of Fairport Convention. 180g reissue LP in replica gatefold sleeve, limited to 1000 copies.
