Belle and Sebastian
How To Solve Our Human Problems (Parts 1-3)

Back in the day (eg in the nineties), Belle & Sebastian were renowned for the extraordinarily high quality of their EPs, so it's great to see the band returning to the format, perfect for their smart indie pop. How To Solve Our Human Problems has been released as three separate EPs, but is also available all together, either on a single CD or in a vinyl box-set.

Bitchin Bajas
Bajas Fresh

Bitchin Bajas centre around guitarist and organist Cooper Crain, also of Chicago Psych/drone band Cave. In the 4 years since their last album, they have released collaborative efforts with Natural Information Society, Olivia Wyatt and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. Bajas Fresh is their fifth full album and droning soundscapes are the order of the day. Half-speed mastered double LP and double cassette on Drag City.

Calexico
The Thread That Keeps Us

The Thread That Keeps Us is album number 9 from Arizona duo Calexico. This album finds the band newly inspired by the North Californian coast where it was recorded. Taking all we know and love about Calexico, giving it a rougher edge, and increasingly confident songwriting has helped Joey Burns and John Convertino reach a new high benchmark in their career.

Causa Sui
Vibraciones Doradas

Danish psych rock stoners, Causa Sui are rounding off their sort-of-trilogy of albums with a mini album, Vibraciones Doradas, Spanish for Golden Vibrations. It follows on from 2013’s Euporie Tide and 2016’s Return To The Sky. Their influences range from fusion-era Miles Davis, Krautrock groups such as Can and Popol Vuh, the dusty blues rock of The Allman Brothers and Aussie psych rockers Tame Impala. Available on mint green coloured vinyl LP and CD.

Charles Hayward and Thurston Moore
Improvisations

Thurston Moore’s relocation to Dalston a few years ago has put him into the same musical orbits as players like Charles Hayward, the legendary driving force behind This Heat and Camberwell Now. Improvisations is a set of just that, with our two heroes tearing it up on guitar and drums. Vinyl release on Care In The Community.

Claro Intelecto
Exhilarator

His first album for quite some time, Claro Intelecto’s Exhilarator is less linear in style than previous offerings. Those who loved the calm, melodic dub of the Mancunian’s early work such as Metanarrative will still find moments here that resemble it. But these thirteen tracks make time for other references as well; there are even tinges of IDM. Check that bass on ‘Guardian Angel’ that sounds like a carpenter sawing wood, or the percussion writhing beneath mournful leads on ‘Slither - The Way Home’. Solid production, as ever.

DeepChord
Northern Shores EP

You know you love that classic Detroit Deepchord sound. Follow Rod Modell on his latest trip into the far reaches of the cosmos, as expressed through sublimely ambient deep house. Northern Shores is a four track EP of perfectly blended pads, drums, field recordings and reverbs upon reverbs. 12” on Soma.

Django Django
Marble Skies

Art rockers Django Django have established themselves as one of Britain’s more original bands. From their unpigeonholable eponymous debut to it’s follow-up Born Under Saturn they have mashed genres together to make a sound all of their own. Their new album Marble Skies, like their debut, is a more lean affair than Born Under Saturn, but doesn’t fail to explore new territory.

Dream Wife
Dream Wife

Debut from three-piece Dream Wife. Hailing from Brighton, London and Reykjavik, the project which began as a ‘fake band’ for an art project has morphed into something much more legit. Lively, colourful indie rock with sharp vocals and spiky political lyrics. They are now a long way from their lo-fi origins and claim they worship at the altar of David Bowie and Madonna.

Elastica
Elastica

In 1994 you would have thought that Elastica would have gone on to become something quite special but instead they dribbled to a halt. Still they released one classic album that although was dangerously derivative at times had the type of killer tunes that filled those indie discos. Vinyl reissue includes a bonus fanzine and flexi disc.

Electric Wizard
Wizard Bloody Wizard

Dorset doom metalers Electric Wizard released their last album, Time To Die, amid contractual wranglings with their label. It was a tough time for the band. Three years later and the way is clear for them to do what they do best. Wizard Bloody Wizard is their Black Sabbath-referencing ninth album, and sees the band rocking just as hard but freed from previous shackles.

Esben And The Witch
Live At Roadburn

At the latest instalment of the Netherlands’ legendary Roadburn Festival, Esben and the Witch played a set that has been distilled down to vinyl. The set presented here is positively dripping with atmosphere, the live performance adding power to favourite tracks from various albums. Released on vinyl on Esben’s own label Nostromo.

Ezra Furman
Transangelic Exodus

Ezra Furman presents Transangelic Exodus, a somewhat epic queer song-suite following a narrative about being in love with an illegal angel. Furman is a real showman and a dramatic songwriter, and his personality drives these songs on and on. Transangelic Exodus is a powerful statement made in defiance of contemporary America. On Bella Union.

Fever Ray
Plunge

Well I don’t know about you, but this is very exciting. Karin Dreijer has of course been busy making magic with The Knife for much of the intervening period, but it’s been absolutely years since she stepped out as her solo project Fever Ray. But now we have a whole new album, Plunge, to get lost in! Released by Rabid Records.

First Aid Kit
Ruins

Swedish sister duo First Aid Kit return with their fourth album, Ruins. Previous albums have been increasingly more confident but their first album, with tracks like "Ghost Town", will be hard to beat for many early adopters of their music. They still have it though, so expect more assured songwriting, beautiful harmonies and foot-tapping sing-a-longs.

Franz Ferdinand
Always Ascending

New Franz Ferdinand! I always felt that Franz transcended the glut of mid-2000’s indie that rushed in on their coattails, and sure enough here they still are in 2017, producing music that is interesting and fresh. Always Ascending features lots of synth action, with moments that even recall Soulwax. Released by Domino.

Function
Recompiled II/II

Following the recent Recompiled I/II, a second retrospective volume of Sandwell District veteran David Sumner on A-TON, the new sublabel of Berghain's Ostgut Ton. Previously unreleased tracks alongside well-loved and deleted classics, going as far back as 1996’s F1. Widely considered some of the finest techno of last quarter century - pristine minimalism all round. Double vinyl only.

Guided By Voices
Live From Austin, TX

Back in 2004, Robert Pollard had decided that Guided By Voices, a band that had been his baby for more than 20 years, had run it’s course. Live From Austin, Texas was one of the band’s final gigs, and you can now share the emotional night with them again. Available on 2LP vinyl or 2CD+DVD. It needs to be pointed out that Guided By Voices reformed in 2012 and have released a further 9 albums to date.

Hoops
Tapes #1-3

Hoops, or in everyday life Drew Auscherman, has released three EPs of lo-fi guitar + electronics pop on cassette over the last few years. Now, the opportunity has arisen to acquire all that tasty material on the vinyl format! The warm warble of the original tape production is still there, but the convenience and prestige suits the quality of the material. Double LP from Fat Possum.

James Green
Donkey Jukebox

Donkey Jukebox started life as an art installation by James Green in a Yorkshire pub. Green created pieces of music by looping phrases he played on a French lap organ and weaving them into nonrepeating linear soundscapes. Artist and musician Green is hardly prolific as a solo artist, this being only his second album in 13 years, but in that time he has also formed The Big Eyes Family Players and collaborated with Alasdair Roberts.

John Williams
Jaws (Music From The Motion Picture)

Classic film, classic soundtrack: its Jaws! John Williams’ creeping shark-theme score is literally one of the major cornerstones for any film soundtrack that applies tension, so it's pretty much a must. Here we have a release of Jaws’ soundtrack over two LPs, featuring some tracks that haven’t ever been available on vinyl before! Courtesy of Mondo.

Jonti
Tokorats

An album as dazzling with guest appearances and stylistic diversions as it’s press release is with super-cool name dropping and fashionable locales, Jonti takes us through a sonic journey that sees us witness various conversations with Jonti’s own ‘Tokorat’, a complex and multi-facated creature that lives in his mirror and reflects the dark side of his personality. If that hasn’t put you off, and you don’t mind that the creation of this record was a ‘spiritual journey’ you may have plenty to find in this record, the path to it’s completion including collaborations with Mark Ronson, BADBADNOTGOOD, Odd Future and Sampa The Great.

Keiji Haino / Jim O'Rourke / Oren Ambarchi
This Dazzling, Genuine

Startling to note that this is already the eighth release from the free rock supergroup. The trio are masters at wrenching great textural and dynamic variety from the basic power trio format, which here is augmented with some unusual instrumental additions. O’Rourke plays EMS Synthi as well as often heavily-effected bass, Haino sings in English, and besides guitar tackles electronics, flute and toy piano. Ambarchi’s playing runs the gamut from subtle cymbal work to full-on frenzy. A characteristically lovely double LP presentation from Ambarchi’s Black Truffle label, designed by Stephen O’Malley and cut by Rashad Becker.

Moodymann
Forevernevermore

Originally released in 2000 and gathering together the best bits and pieces from Moodymann’s late 90s KDJ work, this re-release is passes on simply adding new sleeve notes and b-sides, instead having Moodymann completely rework and reinterpret the original record from top to bottom. The DNA of those classic retro funk disco workouts are still present and correct and the centrepieces of Wednesday Night People and Don’t You Want My Love still resonate as they ever did. What echoes more are the slow shifts, the thoughtful and light synth work and underlying sense that Moodymann’s vinyl collection had as much Soul in it as it did House Music.

New Order
NOMC15

Towards the end of 2015, New Order played two gigs at Brixton Academy in support of their album Music Complete. The shows were subject to rave reviews, including a five-star write-up in The Guardian, and the audio from the second of those concerts was captured by Live Here Now. Now Mute present it across CD and triple LP. Comes with plenty of the hits as well.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds
Who Built The Moon?

Who Built The Moon? is the third album by 4 parts ex-Oasis, 1 part ex-Zutons band Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Noel Gallagher insists that there are a number of far-flung influences on his new band’s music and the band name, intentionally or otherwise, named after the Judy Henske song, suggests psychedelic overtones. However he made this soup, fans of Noel Gallagher’s output to date will find plenty to like here. LP and CD on Sour Mash.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds
Holy Mountain

The new album from Noel Gallagher’s current project High Flying Birds, Who Built The Moon?, is out now, and here to accompany it is this natty Maxi single. Holy Mountain is a storming track featuring Paul Weller on the old organ, and this release adds an instrumental version and an exclusive session recording bonus track. 12” on Sour Mash.

Pauline Anna Strom
Trans-Millenia Music

The last few years have seen the rediscovery of a lot of music that had been unjustly neglected due to association with the New Age tag. The work of Pauline Anna Strom is a prime example: though driven by highly subjective cosmic concepts, her ambient but melodic music transcends crystals’n’yoga cliché. Losing her sight in childhood didn’t prevent her digging deep into the arcane complexities of synths such as the Yamaha DX7. Hers is a verdant, varied and exploratory soundworld, and her compositions display meticulousness and rigour. This double LP (or single CD) comp is drawn from a trio of 80s albums. Recommended for fans of Suzanne Ciani, Popol Vuh and Klaus Schulze.

Penguin Cafe
The Red Book

Arthur Jeffe’s continuation of his father Simon’s legacy as Penguin Café is impressive. The contents of The Red Book are glittering, complex instrumentals, oft led by piano and strings but featuring quite a list of instruments. Lying somewhere between modern classical minimalism and pop, these compositions aren’t too far from post-rock. Fortunately, the tedious, po-faced overstatement common in post-rock is largely absent here.

Peter Broderick
All Together Again

Docile post-folk ambienteer Peter Broderick strings together a decade’s worth of private commissions for this 2LP collection on Erased Tapes. Young Pete has admirers in all corners; there’s even an honest-to-god fashion runway piece. While the tracks comprising All Together Again are unrelated, their instrumental composition and style are consistent enough to be of interest even to cautious fans.

Phantom Horse
Als Ob

German experimental electronic duo Phantom Horse have readjusted their sound for their new album Als Ob. Fans shouldn’t worry too much though, their unconventional minimalist approach à la Moondog and the Cabaret Voltare-influenced electronica still form much of their sound adding an eerie quality John Carpenter uses to soundtrack his films.

Prurient
Rainbow Mirror

New Prurient album! And boy is it a big one: Rainbow Mirror is a three-and-a-half-hour super release, currently available as a quadruple disc 8 panel digipack. It’s all fresh original material, delving into deep and quasi-ambient territory without losing the harsh edge of the Prurient project. Massive potent stuff, presented on Profound Lore.

R.E.M.
Automatic For The People (25th Anniversary Edition)

Outta the way people, certified classic coming through! Automatic For The People, unleashed twenty-five years ago, firmly established R.E.M. as a massive globe-straddling band, with hits including ‘Everybody Hurts’ and ‘Nightswimming’. Now here is an anniversary reissue to celebrate, ranging from a straight-up vinyl edition to a sprawling 3CD and Blu Ray collection with demos, a live show, and more besides.

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings
Soul Of A Woman

Soul of a Woman by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings is an album of songs that the band recorded in the year prior to her sad death in 2016. It’s always good to go out on top, and with this album, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings are in scintillating, soulful form. On vinyl LP with download code and CD.

Shopping
The Official Body

The Official Body is the third album by London post punk trio Shopping. It follows on from 2013’s Consumer Complaints and 2015’s Why Choose. The band were initially signed to Milk records, a label run by the band’s rhythm section, Andrew Milk and Billy Easter. They were quickly snapped up by Fat Cat Records, a label they’ve called home ever since.

Suzanne Ciani
Help, Help, The Globolinks!

Oooh! Never-before-released music from Suzanne Ciani, written in 1980 for Gian Carlo Menotti’s children’s opera Help, Help, The Globolinks!. Ciani works her synthesiser into bold shapes that manage to push exciting musical boundaries while still keeping things suitable for the kids. First commercial release, on Finders Keepers.

The Go! Team
Semicircle

Semicircle is the fifth album by The Go! Team. Their mission to bring joy to the world this time around took them ultimately to Detroit where the group’s mainstay and founder Ian Parton found The Detroit Youth Choir. The resulting album contains a bunch of uplifting tracks featuring a gang-style choir, a marching band and a few surprised from Parton’s box of tricks.

The Twang
Subscription

The Twang were part of the mid-noughties explosion of lad-rock bands that brought us The Fratellis et al, indeed Barry Fratelli served as an auxiliary touring member of The Twang for a time. Thirteen years and five albums later the Brummie five-piece have delivered heir latest long-player, Subscription. Double vinyl Lp or CD on Jump The Cut.

Thor & Friends
The Subversive Nature of Kindness

Thor Harris: Swans’ former charismatic percussionist, and potential future governor of Texas. Chief friends are marimba player Peggy Ghorbani and multi-instrumentalist Sarah “Goat” Gautier. Their music is rooted in tonal percussion and often recalls minimalists who wrote for such instrumentation, like Reich and Riley, but also hinting at more contemporary influences, from Aphex Twin to The Necks. The many guests on this second LP include throat singer Enrique Soriah, Michael Gira. and Norwegian extended-technique vocalist Stine Janvin Motland.

tUnE-YaRdS
I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life

Merrill Garbus’s splendid odd-pop project (do I really still have to capitalise tUnE-YaRdS like this?) is now formally a duo with Nate Bremmer, and they are back with a fully-fledged full-length album. I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life is pretty sleek production-wise, though that tasty tUnE-YaRdS wonkiness still remains. Out on 4AD.

Ut
Ut + Confidential

First out the gate for the Ut reissue series are the debut EPs from the New York no wavers. Ut’s is a darker and more angular take on the bass and rhythm centred approach they share with contemporaries Liquid Liquid and ESG. Admirably inventive and non-hierarchical. Available on CD or 12” cut at 45 rpm.

Various
Stranger Things: Music from the Netflix Original Series

Netflix Original Series Stranger Things perfectly combined the aesthetic of 80s horror and teen buddy films into one addictive ride. This CD/double LP relives the soundtrack that helped do this, with evocative hits from The Clash, Joy Division, Toto, Duran Duran and more - alongside dialogue from series one and two.

Virginia Wing / XAM Duo
Tomorrow’s Gift

London indie band Virginia Wing and electronic experimentalists XAM Duo, who are comprised from members of Hookworms and Deadwall, got together in Bradford on freezing January day and did a little bit of improvising. Tomorrow’s Gift is the exciting, tweaked and refined result of those sessions.

Whitney
Light Upon The Lake: Demo Recordings

While we excitedly wait for the second album from Chicago duo Whitney, they have served up their debut in its rawest form with Light Upon The Lake: Demo Recordings. As the guys move on from a cathartic songwriting and recording experience and a grueling touring schedule, they are keen to show where their critically acclaimed debut all began. To sweeten the deal, they’ve included a cover of Alain Toussaint’s You and Me, a previously unreleased recording of an inspirational favourite.

Wilco
Being There (Deluxe Edition)

Being There was the second album to be released by Wilco. 1996 was a fruitful time for Jeff Tweedy and Co. as they had enough high quality songs to fill a double album. The rich, creative period is borne out by this reissue which is spread over 5 CDs or 4 LPs and includes previously unreleased tracks, live stuff and alternate versions of Wilco classics.

Xylouris White
Mother

Mother is the third album by drum and lute combo, Xylouris White. The duo consist of Dirty Three drummer, Jim White and lute-playing Crete native, George Xylouris of Xylouris Ensemble. The album forms the third part of loose trilogy of albums with 2014’s Goats and 2016’s Black Peak. Jim White is known for collaborating with a number of artists including Smog, PJ Harvey, Cat Power, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and most recently on Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett’s Lotta Sea Lice.
