Andrea Penso
Ritorno All'Acqua

Andrea Penso has used those most essential of tools to create this work: field recordings and tape loops. With such slight means, he has made Rittorno All’Acqua, a subtle, abstract drift apparently meant to correspond to the baptism of Jesus, among other subjects. Single-sided c20 cassette, released in an edition of just 150 on Canti Magnetici.

Arrigo Lora-Totino
Trio Prosodico

Prime Italian sound poetry recorded in 1976. The under-appreciated Mr. Arrigo Lora-Totino wrote and led the trio performance of Trio Prosodico, which he considers to be a major cornerstone of his work. Very little has made it to record, so cherish this new LP edition on Holidays Records (part of a sound poetry series), limited to 250 copies.

Chamber Fracture

The latest album of experimental analogue murk'n'crackle and thoughtful indie rock from Astatine is limited to just 20 copies on vinyl and 40 on CD! Have you ever heard of such a thing? This one's for fans of strange haunted lo-fi pop so rare it almost doesn't exist. The track I've heard is comparable to early Hood but with harsher guitar sounds.

Brotzmann / Parker / Drake
Song Sentimentale

It's always a good time for Brötzmann, especially when the old sax-man is playing with the unbeatable rhythm section of William Parker and Hamid Drake. Totally intuitive and highly inventive interplay is the name of the game. The sounds of Song Sentimentale were recorded live in front of a rapt audience at London’s Cafe Oto last year: the record is released by Oto’s own Otoroku label.

Cameron Stallones & Nicholas Malkin
Music From Harvester - Compositions for Farfisa VIP345 & Guitar

Cameron Stallones is the man behind Sun Araw, and Nicholas Malkin makes Not Not Fun-style electronics as Afterhours. Together they have scored Harvester, a film compilation of combine harvester footage, with Compositions for Farfisa VIP345 & Guitar. Over two cassettes, the pair meander around peacefully, seeing what sonic corners they end up in. Double c40 gold cassettes, released by Sun Ark.

Chris Abrahams & Burkhard Beins
Instead of the Sun

2 premium improvisers unite to create wonder. Chris Abrahams is of course the pianist for not-of-this-world Australian trio The Necks, while Burkhard Beins has played leftfield percussion with Keith Rowe, Axel Dörner and Toshimaru Nakamura over the years. The 9 pieces on Instead Of The Sun push into strange and beautiful sonic spaces like few musicians can manage. On Concrete Disc.

Chris Koelle / Brad Rose

Desire Path's series of collaborative split 7" continues here with one from Chris Koelle and Brad Rose, who offer a more distinctly folk sound than their many ambient and drone label-mates. Koelle is all about the banjo, offering a subversive take on the traditional instrument, while Rose continues to offset folk music with drone in ways New Weird America only dreamt of.

Constellation Botsu
Constellation Botsu

‘Constellation Botsu’ is a sonic bombardment of ‘Botsu’ which are a sort of recorded music ‘track’ if you will, of terrifying, unhinged electronic experiments of which there are currently several hundred in existence. The Botsu considered most suitable for human consumption have been chosen for this record, each one is a miniature hurricane of abrasive, overdriven assault.

Derek Piotr

Derek Piotr builds up droning tracks out of super-spliced fragments of samples and voices (mostly Piotr’s, but also Maja Ratke’s), manipulated beyond obvious recognition. Drono functions as ambient background texture, but also richly rewards closer listening to untangle the blur of sounds. 150 CD copies on Richard Chartier’s LINE label.

Different Fountains
Shrimp That Sleeps

Brussels-based electronic duo Different Fountains have, for a few years now, been central proponents of Brussels’ modern electronic music scene. ‘Shrimp That Sleeps’ is their first full-length LP following the release of a 7” and 12” single on their own label, Different Fountains Editions. Featuring nine tracks on vinyl and ten on CD, 'Shrimp That Sleeps' is as engaging as it is absorbing, and touches upon subtle house music, post-rock, ambient and atmospheric pop.

Ghedalia Tazartes
5 Rimbaud 1 Verlaine

Sound poet and general avant-hollerer Ghedalia Tazartes pays tribute to some French literary greats, reinterpreting 5 Rimbaud poems and 1 by Verlaine. Tzarteses pulls out some wild and playful interpretations, very varied as a set. Previously released in a very low-key way, these pieces now get a 10” vinyl outing as part of Holidays Records’ sound poetry series.

Goldring / Thomson
For All #1: Nines

This one-sided 12" collaboration brings together two guitarists from noisy post-rock band Enablers for some eerie but ultimately good-time noodling and bell-chiming. Joe Goldring has previously played with ubiquitous noise fiends Swans, so is no stranger to fifteen-minute-plus pieces, and Kevin Thomson earned his chops fronting post-hardcore outfit Nice Strong Arm. Together, the duo have composed two purely instrumental tracks for Lancashire and Somerset, full of clean electric guitar majesty and a variety of manipulations, including your standard feedback fun.

Gypsy Eyes

Gypsy Eyes produces slightly tense semi-ambient music, his full-length album Nefelibata creeping through an audio landscape that feels very real. Much of the sound here is sourced electronically, but there are crackles and rustles that hint at physical presence. Edition of 100 digipack CD copies, on Time Released Sound.

Hartmut Geerken

Hartmut Geerken has been a busy sound poet, improviser and collaborator (with the likes of John Tchicai and The Art Ensemble Of Chicago) for decades now: Orpheus is a 1996 recording of Geerken manipulating a Ukrainian bandura (and his voice) to remarkable effect. Cherish this new LP edition on Holidays Records (part of a sound poetry series), limited to 200 copies.

J Fernandez
Memorize Now

J Fernandez, or Justin to his friends, makes hazy psychedelic pop in his bedroom above a stained glass studio in Chicago, he follows up a couple of EPs on local labels with this 12" on Atelier Ciseaux, which channels Syd Barrett psychedelia and Stereolab retro electronics into an innocent swirl of electric guitar, horns, vintage organs and tape echo.

Jean-Louis Costes
Le fantôme d'Archie Shepp

Here we have a live album from Jean-Louis Costes, recorded at the famed Instants Chavirés venue. I’m not entirely sure what subjects are inspiring Costes on Le fantome d’Archie Shepp, as I don’t speak French, but from the demented style of his vocals, he may well be possessed by the ghost of Shepp. An LP of fully committed odd-songs on the Disques Charivari label.

John Wesley Coleman III / Followed By Static
Personality Pancake / Bacon Bear

Joseph Houpert / Norm Chambers

Yet more ambient joy comes from Desire Path here, with a 7" split by artists Norm Chambers and Joseph Houpert. Known more commonly as Panabrite, Chambers crafts Komische-influenced ambient works that synthesise the natural world with a krautish impression of it. Desire Path continue to show off every experimental and ambient act worth caring about in 2014.

Are You Land Or Water

KKKMO is a project obsessed with caves. Although this record was not recorded in a cave (the natural reverb would have destroyed the tight rhythms and precise balance of the music), it was inspired by a German cave. Are You Land Or Water is a low-slung, slightly seedy-vibed rock record, nicely put together. LP on House of Mythology.

Les Conversions

Machinefabriek with Anne Bakker

Machinefabriek seems to have been listening to some Iannis Xenakis (as should everyone)! This new mini-album finds him moving away from his usual style, commissioning violinist Anne Bakker to perform a series of single-string glissandi, multiple recordings of which are layered up (and bolstered by a sine tone) to produce a tonally intense piece. Self-released CD.

Marquis Hawkes

Marquis Hawkes kicks off the title track of Sweet by wrong-footing the listener, letting an R&B sample play unimpeded for few seconds before locking it in a loop and layering up his own funky house breaks. The tracks on this EP feel like the adventurous night that follows the sample’s bright summer’s day. 12” out on Houndstooth.

MASHA is a project of IVVVO, kicking out cosmic techno jams. Ghosts drifts around for a while before kicking in with a gorgeous beat, perfect for a deep, smooth, late-night set. Released as a single sided 12” (one track is enough when it’s this potent!) on the LAMA label. Limited to just 200 copies.

Maurizio Abate
Loneliness, Desire and Revenge

Maurizio Abate is usually found making experimental albums of a psychedelic nature with the recording process being just part of the music’s ever-evolving journey. With his latest work he has decided to abandon all that and make Loneliness, Desire and Revenge: a stripped back acoustic guitar album that reflects Abate’s mood. Unlike his previous work, this contains more-or-less the definitive versions of the songs. His relationship with the acoustic guitar was inspired by the film In Search of Blind Joe Death: The Saga of John Fahey, which he arranged several screenings of in his native Italy.

These are from Newcastle, Australia but their sound is not unlike the rainy stink you might have thought come from a pre-makeover Newcastle, England. They play a very intense form of sludgy rock which reminds me of their fellow countrymen the Birthday Party and endless churners Swans. Over torrential guitars lyrics are spat out at the listener, not for the fainthearted.

It Is What It Is

Melbourne based Oldmate was initially the solo project of Pat Telfer from Australian band Bitch Prefect (what a name) but has since progressed into a band of 7-10 strong musicians including members of Wireheads and Peak Twins. Still predominantly led by Telfer, ‘It Is What It Is’ is Oldmate’s debut LP, and continues in the same melancholy and discordant vein as earlier material, summoning the spirit of Syd Barrett and Lou Reed, while also recalling Beat Happening circa 1991, not to mention a slightly distinct likeness to their fellow Aussie natives The Go Betweens. Sounds good to me!

Ordre Etern
Revolució Soterrada

Ordre Etern are a product of the current Spanish political climate (explicit shout-outs to Goya and Lorca are made in the press release). They aren’t too happy about it apparently, and express this through good old-fashioned industrial drum pounding and vocal howling, with decent amounts of electronics too. Involving former Nurse With Wound collaborator Victor Hurtado. On Magia Roja / Tesla Tapes.

Distant Present

Including new, previously unreleased material by Icelandic, techno, dub artist Ozy, as well as remixes by prominent artists including American electro artist Laurel Halo (Hyperdub records) and experimental techno producer Miles Whittaker (Modern love records), ‘Distant Present’ is an energetic experiment in minimalist, ambient techno drone with influences of dub and electro.

Pauline Oliveros / Zeena Parkins
Presenca Series 001

Archive release from avant-garde harpist / composer Zeena Parkins and legendary deep listener Pauline Oliveros. Presenca Series 001 is the result of the formerly-defunct Lucky Kitchen label delving into the vaults of the Serralves Foundation, digging up a side’s worth of sound art for each artist. On audiophile-grade vinyl.

Pedro Muthaship
Ten Revolutions of Wrong

Sun Araw’s Sun Ark imprint returns with a limited C40 cassette of computer weirdness and scrambled electronics. Ten Revolutions of Wrong from Pedro Muthaship, also known as Pete Hope, is a thick sludge of dub textures, cheap keyboard nastiness and the man’s heavily distorted spoken vocals. This kitchen-sink electronica is limited to 100 cassettes only.

Phill Niblock

Glorious all-consuming-drone composer Phill Niblock is also a filmmaker: in fact, this is what he was known for initially, though his releases over the years have concealed that. T H I R is a 1972 film work that intensely focuses on details of nature, accompanied by two different Niblock soundtracks. DVD from Von Archives.

The World Left Behind

Rayons is Japanese composer Masako Nakai, who has composed parts for a broad range of classical instruments that, on debut full-length The World Left Behind, knit together into heavily melancholic melodic structures. Several pieces include vocals from frequent collaborator Predawn. Japanese CD release on the Flau label.

Robert Piotrowicz
Old School Made of Gold

Robert Piotrowicz deals in electroacoustic modular synthesis, and the two pieces presented on Old School Made Of Gold show us that he is damn good at it. The sound field is filled with carefully balanced tones and sharp little details: a composer’s ear is definitely at play here. Transparent red vinyl 12” on Musica Genera / Bocian.

Room 101
Vox Humana

Room 101’s Jason Williamson hates bands. And by the sound of Vox Humana he hates a bunch of other things as well. Packing all his aggression into the One Man Band results in a 7” jammed to the last groove with energy and punk disdain of anything remotely resembling authority or organized coherence.

Rory Storm
Low Fidelity Electronic Music

If the album cover for 'Low Fidelity Electronic Music' doesn't look quite there, it's because Rory Storm wasn't, either: during the making of the record, he was all blocked up, and struggling to hear things as a result of his flu. The result is that his techno is a little bit warped, a little bit loud and a little bit gruesome. Overall, though, 'Low Fidelity Electronic Music' continues the New Zealand artist's attempt to home record some odd little electronic tunes.

Sam De La rosa

"Sam De La Rosa makes his solo debut on Burka For Everybody. In his last album, Sam De la Rosa, known for being Led Er Est´s lead singer, features a sound that resonates with sci-fi soundtracks and, by means of structure, depicts an aural yet lethargic ascension to outer space. His obscure and rusty pop songs, incorporating sounds coming into contact with oxygen tempered by folk forms, develop like roots that break up solitary urban concrete that looks back at abandoned geodesic domes."

Sergie Rezza

Sergie Rezza is a collaborative project between Romain Poncet and DJ Deep that lies somewhere in the dark and dreamy territory between techno and noise. ‘Mist’ combines the energy and focus of Romain with the atmospheric experimentation of Deep to forge a new, more cerebral, beat driven path embellished with intricate melodies and sub conscious sounds.

Shift Work
Document II

Shift Work are a pair of analogue synth tweakers making tightly flowing pieces of hypnotising arpeggiations. Document II contains Two Shift Work originals and two remixes, one a slowed down jam from DVA Damas and one a quintessentially Factory Floor-esque Factory Floor reworking. 12” on Houndstooth.

Sion Orgon
Recognition Journal

Recognition Journal is the third album by Sion Orgon. The plethora of sounds he uses to create his sonic soundscapes tend to end up at the avant garde end of the scale and can be difficult to listen to. However, he can spring the odd surprise and what could be described as a ‘normal’ song can suddenly appear out of the weirdness. Julian Cope cohort Thighpaulsandra and Underworld’s Gaz Williams add their talent to the mix.

Spirit Of The Positive Wind
Spirit Of The Positive Wind

Sunil Sharpe

On The Hoof is a brand new label, hosted by Sunil Sharpe and operating out of Ireland. He’s decided to kick things off himself with this powerful little EP: four tracks that kick and pump and swirl around with acidic flair. The release has the very appropriate title / catalogue number of HOOF01. 12” vinyl.

The Alps
Jewelt Galaxies / Spirit Shambles

‘Jewelt Galaxies/ Spirit Shambles’ is the first full album release by The Alps that is comprised of their first two releases on CDR. Recorded in 2005 in Scott Hewickers's living room, mostly in one session with just one microphone, The Alps have created a series of beautiful, picturesque soundscapes.

The Circle and The Point / Sleepwalkers Local / Chapels

The Gamecock
All Right, Hen?

Formed in 2010, Gamecock are a two piece comprised of Stuart Arnot (Smear Campaign/Total Vermin Tapes) and Nick Mitchell (Chalaque/Golden Lab Records). ‘All Right, Hen?’ is a reissue put out by Golden Lab because neither of them had a copy of either the original cassette release on Gary War’s Fixed Identity or the subsequent Beartown reissue. Their music is a spontaneous, electronic, broken funk in the same gene pool as Skaters or Cabaret Voltaire.

The Pickle Factory
Our Anthems

The [Law-Rah] Collective & Cinema Perdu

Some albums are great for processing inarticulate emotions, and Invocation is one of them. The five tracks, two of which are composed by The [Law-Rah] Collective, two by Cinema Perdu, and one by the two working together, offer a wide spectrum music. Ranging from meditative pads to darkly pulsing ambient, Invocation will surely invoke something.

No Emotions Catered For

On No Emotions Catered For, Theme’s fifth album, the improv rock of the collaborative work and the rich atmospherics of before give way to something that, whilst still drawing from these realms, is more disposed to organic electronics, cut-ups, live instruments, loops and, once again, often equally cut-up vocals that play with words as much as concepts and vague ideas. Comprising six cuts that have been worked on for over two years, this album sees Theme devoting themselves to movement and change, or the overt idea of never wishing to stay in one place. Uneasy and restless, yet still remaining hypnotic and charged with a hint of psychedelic terror, it can draw you in to a world that is Theme’s most fully realised yet.

Synthrotek/WR Modular Compilation

The Synthrotek/WR Modular Compilation is the 51st release by Portland’s Wil-Ru Records. This is a collaborative effort with Synthrotek DIY electronics, who bring you 13 dynamic tracks that focus on electronic musicians working within the modular synth community, covering a diverse range of electronic soundscapes – from electropop to acid, noise to drone, industrial and krautrock.

Normalised : The Detonic Collection

Australia has already stolen the source of all our garage punk/noise rock powers and set up a new base for the genres down under, and now they're taking aim at the dark recesses of electronic music. Detonic Records is home to a variety of unforgiving industrial acts and pulverising EDM artists, who shut out the sun, caving themselves into the dingiest of clubs. This compilation from the Melbourne label presents the sounds of many different countries, but especially highlights the emergent scene in Gothstralia.

Reinhold Friedl: KORE

Zeitkratzer are not your usual classically trained orchestral collective. They’ve collaborated with Merzbow and Keiji Haino and they covered Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music in its entirety. On Reinhold Friedl: KORE from Karlrecords they bring their experimental skills to reinterpret classical and electronic composer Reinhold Freidl, making an incredible electroacoustic racket in process.
