BEAK>
Sex Music

Here they come again those BEAK> boys. Here the threesome tease a track from their upcoming full length with four minutes of slinking grooves, kraut like pulsating drums and squiggly synths. Not only that but they have drafted in Win Butler the very tall leader from Arcade Fire to do a remix which you'll find on side B.

Broken Social Scene
Hug of Thunder

Big Canadian enormous band Broken Social Scene reconfigure for their most sparkling album yet. With 15 members to try to coincide diaries then it must be quite the undertaking but they’ve made a bold and panoramic album that should shift them to the next level and make all that admin worthwhile.

Catherine Wheel
Ferment

Coming in at a solid no 23 in Pitchfork's Top Shoegaze albums, Music on Vinyl have had the good sense to issue Catherine Wheel's now classic 'Ferment' on vinyl. It contains several despatches of noisy shoegaze which is clear cut and rocky rather than woozy. Perhaps closer to Ride than anything else the band used thrashy guitars to create great thumping melodies to leap around your house to when the baby is asleep.

Epic Soundtracks
Film Soundtracks

Epic Soundtracks is Kevin Godfrey, who in turn was one of two brothers at the core of post-punkers Swell Maps. Film Soundtracks is some of his solo material, which tends to be more intimate than his punky drumming work. Spend some time with it thanks to Troubadour, who are releasing Film Soundtracks in CD and LP editions.

Fra Lippo Lippi
In Silence

Fra Lippo Lippi. Now there’s a name from the past. The gloomy Norwegians were severely in debt to Joy Division and the Cure producing a brand of edgy and atmospheric post punk that probably soundtracked 1981 pretty nicely indeed. Interesting fact: guitarist Rune Kristoffersen went on to run experimental Norwegian label Rune Grammofon.

Haim
Something To Tell You

America's favourite sister act, Haim, are back with Something To Tell You - the release of their sophomore album. The eleven-track offering, containing lead single 'I Want You Back', sees the trio build upon a critically-acclaimed debut with exciting, forward-thinking and bold songwriting.

John Stammers
Waiting Around

John Stammers took six (6) years to follow up his 2011 debut but good things come to those who wait. This long awaited follow up has been slowly constructed using old fashioned analogue recording techniques to make an album that could be compared to the work of Nick Drake, Bert Jansch and from more recent times Sufjan Stevens.

Marika Hackman
I'm Not Your Man

Marika Hackman’s second full-length album arrives with The Big Moon in tow as her backing band. I’m Not Your Man is a cool record, intimate when it needs to be and guitar-rocking when it feels like it. We have four different formats available (at time of release, depending on stock levels), including the deluxe coloured vinyl edition which comes with an extra bonus 7”! On Virgin EMI.

Monks
Hamburg Recordings 1967

Special recordings from that classic early essential avant-garage-rock group Monks, released here for the first time! The material here was recorded in Hamburg in 1967 by this group of German-stationed American GIs and has been entirely unreleased since then, until right now! Ooooh… That makes this release a real treat, so thanks due to Jack White over at Third Man.

Palm
Shadow Expert

Blending art-rock with an indie forward motion, Philidelphian four piece Palm mix a discordant version of Battles polyrhythmic picks and sweeps nearer to Nitikowski and the odd tweeness of Deerhoof. There is a definite comparison to be made with Nnamdi Ogbonnaya but with added psych. Second full length available via Carpark.

Patricia
Several Shades Of The Same Color - Part 1

Making sense of some of these press releases makes my brain want to turn itself inside out. Luckily the one phrase 'multifaceted techno trip" pretty much describes the music of Patricia (actually a man  - whoda thunk?) and from the earlier work by this shadowy composer I deduce that this will be well worth waiting out for for fans of dark techno, miserable synth, Demdike Stare and Stotty.

Terry Riley
Persian Surgery Dervishes

Available on vinyl for the first time since the 1970s, this is a double LP of live performances by the legendary ambient composer Terry Riley. Originally released in 1972 it captures performances in Los Angeles and Paris of completely different versions of the same composition showcasing the importance of improvisation in Riley’s music.

The National
Sleep Well Beast

The National have slowly seeped into our consciousness over the past few years simply by selling truckloads of records and becoming a thing we regularly compare other bands to when at a loss to describe moody rock music. Their success really is quite remarkable. Anyway here’s another album which contains more of their dramatic dark rock with some electronic bits bolted on. If you like The National you are going to love it.

This Is The Kit
Moonshine Freeze

Kate Stables’ project This Is The Kit has a new album out, and it is a beautiful and multi-angled thing, with instrumentation and production (by John Parish) that moves lightly around Kate’s songs. Moonshine Freeze feels playful and fleet-footed without being lightweight, making it a bit of treat. Out on Rough Trade.

T2 Trainspotting (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

The long awaited return of Begbie, Sick Boy and Co. comes with another belter of a soundtrack. Re-featuring Iggy Pop and Underworld, alongside a mix of older classics such as Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Queen and new bloods Young Fathers and High Contrast. Riotous, and as with the film, filled with uppers and downers.

Various
Behind The Counter With Max Richter

Who wants to sneak inside Max Richter’s world? I’m pretty sure Phil does and he’ll enjoy this compilation of some of Max’s favourite works both recent and distant.  As you can imagine there’s a heavy classical, neo classical tinge to this but it also includes work by Boards of Canada and Let’s Eat Grandma.

West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band
Vol. 3: A Child's Guide To Good & Evil

The original ‘does what it says on the tin' band, the self descriptive West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band made creative psychedelic pop at a prodigious rate towards the end of the sixties. This is a long awaited re-issue of their third album once voted on of the best psychedelic records of all time by Mojo magazine.
