Alice Jemima

Warm and sparse leftfield electronic pop from Alice Jemima, who shot into view with her stripped down/bare groove cover of Blackstreet’s No Diggity. And after garnering a lot of support from Radio 1 and Amazing radio, she is now set to release her debut full length on Sunday Best. Includes her leading singles Dodged A Bullet and Liquorice.

Bass Clef
Entendrillar

Two new cuts from Bass Clef, the ever-reliable project of Ralph Cumbers. Typically for a Clef production, Entendrillar is exuberant, fun and addictive, weaving a dense nest of synths and rhythms that’ll get you nodding and / or shimmying. And B-side ‘Transprism’ is no slouch either! Strong 12” release on The Trilogy Tapes.

Bear McCreary
10 Cloverfield Lane (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Thanks to Mondo the original score to the love/hate sequel to the love/hate film Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane is now available on double vinyl. Bear McCreary cut hi teeth a long time ago as a classical composer, and has scored soundtracks to the new(er) Battlestar Gallactica, The Boy, and The Forest. Slow building and hugely tense orchestration that builds to an adventurous end.

Blue Orchids
Skull Jam

Blue Orchids are a vintage Mancunian post-punk band (formed by Martin Bramah after he’d played on The Fall’s debut(!)) who’ve come back for more in recent years. New EP Skull Jam features a mixture of brand new songs, new versions of old songs, and a cover, and it bristles with energy and interest. 10” on Tiny Global Productions.

Bob Dylan
Triplicate

Bob Dylan turns to the great American songbook in grand style with Triplicate, which contains a whole thirty reinterpretations of familiar favourites, spread over three discs. Each disc is a carefully arranged ten-track suite, and Dylan offers some laudably subtle insight into these standards. 3CD and 3LP editions, on Columbia.

Byul.org
Selected Tracks For Nacht Damonen

This compilations acts as a sort of peak under the sheets of the underground Korean music scene. A collection of works from a collective from Seoul called Byul.org. Compiled by the collective’s director TaeSang Cho and Markus Acher of The Notwist the music itself ranges from minimal and abstract sound art to synth pop and electro. A fantastic look at the DIY culture still at large under everyone’s feet.

Camera
Radiate

Bureau B (Die Wilde Jagd, Conrad Schnitzler) drop the debut LP from Berlin-based Krautrockers Camera. Radiate has a pretty to-the-point sound - there’s only three in the band, after all, so don’t expect anything too Amon Düül. Besides that, the Motorik grooves motor with a muscular intensity here that makes one think of Can on steroids.

Circa Waves
Different Creatures

If Circa Waves’ last album Young Chasers was a bright and sunny record (as they tell us it was), then Different Creatures is the somewhat darker album of the night. But don’t worry, the band are still playing polished radio indie-rock that will have no trouble scaling festival line-ups over the summer. CD and LP editions, plus a special CD version that comes with a DVD of the band’s 2015 Brixton Academy show.

Cologne Tape
Welt

Cologne Tape is a collective centred around the awesome rhythm-talents of John Stanier (Battles), Alex Willner (The Field), Mario Katz and numerous others. Welt was recorded, naturally enough, in Cologne, with synths and drums and piano and vibraphone and much more. Deep studio explorations from a remarkable ensemble. Released by Magazine.

Craig Finn
We All Want The Same Things

Though he was and is the Springsteen-ish narrator in one-track-mind rockers the Hold Steady, Craig Finn's solo work shows a different side to his character albeit with his barfly persona still intact. Finn is still telling tales of stuff that goes on in his Minneapolis/St Paul neighbourhood pairing his observations with lovely indie rock.

Crystal Fighters
Everything Is My Family

All the bands with ‘Crystal’ in their name always make me think of hazy fuzz-guitars, but Crystal Fighters have more than that up their sleeve on this new album (their third). Everything Is My Family is born out of the band members’ various gap-yearish global travels, and they all came back with a new understanding of ‘world’ musics and ‘world’ life. Released by Play It Again Sam.

Dag Rosenqvist & Matthew Collings
Hello Darkness

The occasionally-recurring team-up of Matthew Collings and Dag Rosenqvist present the results of five years of work, chopping and processing audio from studio sessions until finally satisfied with the results. Hello Darkness is deep and dark and heavy, but also not lacking in a sense of humour: just look at the cover. Out on Denovali.

Devon Sproule
The Gold String

It seems like Devon Sproule has been around forever but she's still somehow only 34. This latest missive from the Virginia based songwriter is inspired by the time she was staying on a remote and rather than eat her dinner set about writing sprawling verse. The result is a short but lush LP with guest spots from Ed Askew and Toronto dream poppers Bernice.

Dude York
Sincerely

Seattle label Hardly Art have been killing it since day now, and their career-long purple patch continues with new signing Dude York. Producer John Goodmanson (Bikini Kill, Sleater Kinney) coaxes the raditude out in spades here - opener ‘Black Jack’ is a pleasingly demented collage of massive riffs and things continue in a similar vein from thereon. Cool cover too.

East Wall
Eyes Of Glass

Dark Entries present a much needed, official remastered reissue of this much sought after and bootlegged Italo Disco gem from Fabrizio Chiari (ex-keyboardist of Kirlian Camera) and Wilma Notari. Originally released in 1982 it still sounds glorious some 34 years later. Includes a double-sided postcard with photos of the band, lyrics, and liner notes by Italo Diso legend Flemming Dalum.

Flume
Tiny Cities feat. Beck (Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas Remix) / Take A Chance feat. Little Dragon (Kölsch Remix)

The amount of talent contained on this 12” is so weighty, it's amazing that the record can even be lifted. Producer Flume has enlisted Beck and Little Dragon to contribute vocals to Tiny Cities and Take A Chance respectively, and those tracks have then been tastily remixed by the killer neo-disco duo of Lindstrom and Prins Thomas on the A side and Kolsch on the B! My my. Limited edition 12” on Transgressive.

Formation

After a few EPs cultivating their sound Formation have landed a deal with Warner Bros and are ready to drop their debut full length. Anthemic catchiness brought with a disco groove, post-punk grit, and positivity. Features some reworked tracks from their back catalogue, crossing sweaty and uplifting.

Francois & The Atlas Mountains
Solide Mirage

Winsome French collective Francois and the Atlas Mountains get down and dirty with their most direct offering yet. Solide Mirage was recorded by the guy who did Christine and the Queens and Owen Pallet takes care of all the violinning. Lead track 'Grange Dereglemen't sees them going all Riverdance on our asses with celtic melodies and men with scarves dancing about.

Go Dam

John Coltrane
My Favourite Things

My Favourite Things is one of John Coltrane's most enduring albums. Although it consists of him talking on Gershwin and other pop and show tune standards, he uses these as a base for his out-there modal experiments twisting the compositions this way and that. True avant-garde brilliance from the mid '60s.

John Hassall & The April Rainers
Wheels to Idyll

John Hassall is one of the two Libertines who have kept a low profile: not for Hassall the busy drug-fuelled solo careers of Barat or Doherty. But he has now produced an album with his group The April Rainers, and what a lovely thing it is. Wheels To Idyll is imbued with the rich melody-pop sunshine of the 1960’s, and Hassall and co. get the sound just right. On VAM Records.

Johnny Cash
At Folsom Prison

At Folsom Prison is one of the most beloved Johnny Cash recordings. The music here, more than on any other recording is imbued with his grit, his spirituality and his wry sense of humour. The set list was put together especially for the concert and the songs deal with subjects that would likely be close the inmates thoughts. It was because of this album that Johnny Cash earned the moniker The Man In Black.

Jonny Velon
Goodness Flows

Inventive singer-songwriter Jonny Velon tunes into the sounds and styles of various classic 70’s cats on his new album Goodness Flows: Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Murray Head… They all mesh together into an accomplished album of cool rock music. The album has eight tracks on the LP version, eleven on the CD and download versions. From Scratchy.

King Ayisoba
1000 Can Die

King Ayisoba’s new album is a particularly powerful statement from the Ghanaian musician. Produced by regular associate Zea (aka The Ex’s Arnold de Boer), 1000 Can Die takes ‘hiplife’ (the Ghanaian blend of highlife and hip-hop) as a starting point and flies yet further from there. Funky, high-energy African music. Out on Glitterbeat.

King Salami and The Cumberland Three
Goin' Back To Wurstville

Fans of rockabilly, sausage references and classic rhythm & blues will find plenty to love in King Salami and the Cumberland 3. Marcos Cabral
Buried Alive Twice

Under the Chemotex moniker, New Yorker, Marcos Cabral made some massive club sounds that recalled the days of Rush and Cajual. Under his given name, Cabral released the album L.I.E.S. in 2013 which went largely unnoticed but set him on a new roots-driven course. After and EP and some tracks appearing on compilations, Dancing On Manhattan which appeared on Ben UFO’s Essential Mix being the most notable, he has now recorded an full-length LP, Buried Alive Twice. It is an understated trip that will land you in a crazy cartoon world pulling and pushing you every which way, bringing you down and building you up. There’s a lot going on in these here grooves.

Mastodon
Emperor Of Sand

Mastodon, the band recognised by all as one of metal’s most forward-thinking acts, return with full-length album number eight. Emperor Of Sand is all about mortality and doom, told through an extended tale about a man sentenced to death in a magic desert. With fierce heavy riffs and all the other fine trappings of hard-rock of course. Out on Warner Bros.

Minus The Bear
VOIDS

Half a decade down from their first album to crack the U.S. top 40 and it’s no surprise that Minus the Bear up the pop on their sixth record. ‘Invisible’ is a full-chested emo banger (don’t worry, there’s some tapping in the breakdown), and opener ‘Last Kiss’ is well hooky too. That said, those craving the classic MtB schtick will find plenty to love here - try math-athon ‘What About the Boat?’

Moiré
No Future

With his releases on R&S, Ninja Tune, and Werk Discs London based producer Moiré has always pushed left of centre in techno production, swapping straight fours for screwed and off kilter beats that mysteriously achieve the same rhythm. On his latest full length through Ghostly International he pushes further into IDM beat work territories, working with MC DRS and “grime poet” James Massiah.

Monolog & Subheim
Conviction

Subheim and Monolog get involved with each other for this collaboration on Denovali. Conviction blends together sweet electronic ambiences and firm drum machines, creating an interesting hybrid that is at times intentionally wrong-footing. It’s both soft and hard, tender and fierce: a genuine collaboration. Heavyweight vinyl edition from Denovali.

Nathan Fake
Providence

Nathan Fake’s new album, his fourth, is the first time he has ever worked with vocalists; and what a pair of vocalists they are. Raphaelle from Braids contributes some swooning dramatism to ‘RVK’, while Prurient / Dominick Fernow contributes some sinister muttering to ‘DEGREELESSNESS’. These big-hitter tracks are supported by a brace of lively electronic instrumentals in classic Fake style. Providence is out on Ninja Tune.

Neko Case
Live From Austin, TX

Despite beginning her career as a punk rock drummer and spending a large part of it singing back up for New Pornographers, it is for her voice that Neko Case will probably be remembered. I once saw it described as "the sort of voice that does something funny to a man". Here it is swooping and carousing in a live set from 2003. Case picks out bits of her first three solo records and performs them with gusto to some pretty happy Texans.

Newmoon
Space

Swing and sway to your heart’s content with this one. Layers and layers of guitars, sweetly understated distant vocals all blocked together as a soothing harmonious duvet for you to wrap up in. Big and satisfying chords with the tones of Smashing Pumpkins, a bit of My Bloody Valentine, and The Cure.

Old 97's
Graveyard Whistling

Rhett Davies's popular Texan bar band have long since broken out of their local scene and now compete with the alt country big boys such as  Uncle Tupelo and the Jayhawks. This is their umpteenth album of feel decent country rock with a low down and dirty feel and hi-paced driving gritty rhythms.

If Porter Ray's debut single is anything to go by, then his full length - Watercolor - is to be highly anticipated. Sacred Geometry is a promising and deep electronic expedition, layered amongst a reel of candid lyrics - keep an eye out for this burgeoning Seattle-based innovator.

Power
Electric Glitter Boogie

The straightforwardly-named Power take their influence entirely from Australia’s history of greasy pub hard rock: music to drink beer and flail around to. Electric Glitter Boogie delivers on both its title and its history, being a straight-down-the-line guitar thrash recorded raw and direct for maximum impact. Released by In The Red.

Public Memory
Veil Of Counsel

Public Memory make a shuffling kind of music out of slithering bass tones, slow-swaggering drum machines and Thom Yorkie vocals, all put through a dubbed-up and tripped-out production style. Veil Of Memory is a three track EP that sonically stands in between last year’s debut album and their forthcoming 2017 follow-up. 12” on Felte.

Pulled Apart By Horses
The Haze

Gravel voiced rockers Pulled Apart By Horses return with their fourth album of pummelling jams. Described as Leeds' hardest rocking band they have been all the way down to Sheffield to record this with producer Ross Orton resulting in another batch of abrasive, noisy but tuneful rackets to shake your head about to.

Screenwives exist in a particular group of Dischord-influenced, DIY rooted bands that have made up vibrant scenes dotted around the UK for years now.
