Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie
Salero: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

The expansive soundtrack to the 2015 film Salero, a documentary about Bolivia's lithium reserves. Inspired by director Mike Plunkett's stunning cinematography, composer Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie (Stars of the Lid/A Winged Victory For the Sullen) delivers a gorgeous ambient backdrop to the salt-flats of Salar de Uyuni. Released as Vinyl LP and CD on the Erased Tapes label.

Andrew Hung
The Greasy Strangler

As a founding member of the whimsical electronic-rock band Fuck Buttons, Andrew Hung has come to produce some the most catchy, lo-fi electronic synths for the critically acclaimed film The Greasy Strangler, and this record is said film’s soundtrack. Available on a snazzy shocking pink Vinyl LP and on CD.

Live On Mars: London Astoria 1997

To celebrate 20 years since their debut album 1977 was released Ash are doing a run of shows performing the album in it’s entirety and releasing this little doozy. A live album from when they played 5 nights in a row at the London Astoria. Features all their hits Goldfinger, Girl from Mars as well as covers of ABBA and Dusty Springfield. Available on limited numbered vinyl and CD.

Big Star
9Complete Third: Vol. 2: Roughs To Mixes

Big Star Complete Third is the result of a decade-long search to find all the recordings from the 1974 sessions that would become Big Star’s Third album. The album has been released with differing track listings and different titles, such as Sister/Lovers, since its original release in 1978. As well as all of the music there are extensive liner notes from those involved and artists who have been influenced by the band. Vol. 2 Roughs To Mixes, one of three vinyl editions, contains the rough mixes by producer Jim Dickinson and Ardent Studios engineer John Fry, and a version of Velvet Underground’s After Hours sung by Lesa Aldridge.

Bright Eyes
Lifted Or The Story Is In The Soil

A reissue of Bright Eyes' 2002 full length release, Lifted Or The Story Is In The Soil. With equal parts folk and indie, frontman Conor Oberst's authentic and well-crafted songwriting is accompanied by his shaky Nebraska voice and diverse instrumentation including orchestral elements, a rock line-up and often just simple acoustic guitar. Released on Vinyl LP and CD on the Saddle Creek label.

Freak Party featuring Angie Brown

Freak Party may be a name that means nothing to you, but it just so happens that this is the original line-up of The Smiths, before Mr Morrissey got involved. Firefly and B-side ‘Don’t Push Your Luck’ have never been released before and were thought lost, but they’ve been found and remastered, with the surprise addition of Angie Brown’s soul vocals. 7” on Nova.

Now as much of a christmas standard as "Rocking Around The Christmas Tree" by Mel and Kim. Low are the perfect band to soundtrack Christmas, coming as they do from the snow-bound city of Duluth which glistens like Christmas half the year round. This short album combines lovely originals "Just Like Christmas" and "Long Way Around the Sea" with spooky versions of traditional song. It's the perfect soundtrack to my Christmas tradition of driving around the less salubrious neighbourhoods, checking out the houses all ridiculously lit up.

Makeness & Adult Jazz
Other Life

After their recent album on Tri Angle - Earrings Off!, which showed little to no respect to straight line towing indie rules the UK experimental four piece have teamed up with Scottish disco oddball Makeness. Take Eggshell vocal oddness and add a hunk of catchy disco goodness. That’s a head sticker, I’ll tell ya.

Mica Levi & Oliver Coates
Remain Calm

Mica Levi / Micachu is a truly busy and multifaceted artist: as well as her work with The Shapes and her orchestral compositions, she takes on new projects like a duck takes to water. This duo record with cellist Oliver Coates was born out of improvisations which were then taken away and re-processed into beautiful and weird new shapes. Remain Calm is released by Slip.

Napalm Death / Melt-Banana

Two of the fastest, hardest, blastingest bands on the planet share wax for this 7” split. Napalm Death deliver a few sharp shocks of their light-speed grindcore on one side, while Japan’s rocket-fueled noisecore heroes Melt-Banana occupy the other. Sheer energy injections from two of the best bands in the business. 7” on Ipecac.

Nightmares On Wax
Ground Floor

As Nightmares On Wax's first full release for Warp Records in over 4 years, Ground Floor is a real club-ready banger. Comprised of four tracks, this EP sees the Leeds-born producer travel back to his original deep house roots with a simply pulsating and relentless selection of rhythmic beats.

Never Mind The Bucket

Never Mind The Bucket is a live recorded, compilation album from the band Officer!. The recorded setlist includes songs from the band’s album Dead Unique as well as some very well constructed covers. The album is both humorous and marvellously clever, showing Mick Hobbs’ personality at its greatest. Available on Vinyl LP.

Paul Weller
Wild Wood

Wild Wood is Modfather Paul Weller’s second solo album. It was released in 1993 to great acclaim and really consolidated his place as credible solo artist. Its style ranges from the punchy ‘60s-flavoured rock of Sunflower to gentler folk-sounding title track. Also includes the single Hung Up.

As a quaint and modern meld of folk, alt-country, blues and downtempo electronica, Pilote (aka Stuart Cullen) introduces modern technology to a classic tried and tested form of songwriting. Containing numerous features from such names as Charlie Parr and Tom Holder, Libero is a hypnotic and timeless offering.

A Moon Shaped Pool

Hello. Thom. It's me. The Radioheadmaster. Your teachers and I are all becoming a little concerned with your workrate. We all agree you're spending a little too much time on BitTorrent and not enough time on your studies. As such we're decided it's best you repeat the fourth grade -- I trust a second attempt at "True Love Waits", "Identikit" and "Desert Island Disk" won't be asking too much. Now please stop looking pensively at your shoes and get to English Lit. What's that? "A Moon Shaped Pool"? You're expelled.

Rose Elinor Dougall

Stellular is the second solo album by ex-Pippette, Rose Elinor Dougall. It’s her first album in nearly 7 years, following on from 2010’s Without Why. Dougall describes the album as being more confident than her previous work. It’s a thoroughly modern album with some classic songwriting soundtracking the difficulties facing a beleaguered generation.

Arc Unknown

Three new tracks from Rrose, presented to the world thanks to Function’s label Infrastructure. Arc Unknown emerges from crystalline ambience into sheer late-night techno thump, raw and direct. And the two ‘Specimen’ tracks don’t mess with the program either. High-grade techno materials from the mighty Rrose.

Sarah Davachi

Vergers finds Sarah Davachi focusing on an EMS Synthi 100, coaxing long, pure, Radigue-esque tones out from it and then garnishing them with touches of violin and vocals. Space and scale are important parts of these compositions, which the listener can all to easily be fully absorbed into. Released by Important Records.

Sean McCann
Music for Public Ensemble

Sean McCann (he of Great Big Sea fame), has assembled a great number of friends and associates (including Ian William Craig, Graham Lambkin, Cameron Stallones, Spencer Grady…) to perform his piece Music for Public Ensemble. The work is a fairly beautiful and gently experimental thing, giving off an air of friendly co-operation. Double LP release with a pamphlet of program notes, on Recital.

Nite Flights

In which the Scott Walker track Nite Flights gets a thorough re-working by the space-rocking band Sendelica. Its an imaginative spin, though the original’s Walkerness still shines through. On the B-side is Swordfish’s own tabla-heavy re-working of the Sendelica re-working. 7” on Fruits De Mer, with three postcards thrown in for good measure.

Siouxsie and The Banshees
The Scream

Initially released in 1978, The Scream is the debut offering of post-punk outfit Siouxsie and The Banshees. The 10-track offering represents what was one of the more audacious and experimental waves in alt-rock history, which both smashed rules and peaked at number 12 in the charts. Features hit single 'Metal Postcard (Mittageisen)'

Steve Moore
The Mind's Eye - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Steve Moore has history in Zombi, meaning that he’s demonstrated his talent for soundtracking spooooooky horror movies in the past. Here he applies his synth skills to The Mind’s Eye, weaving uneasy ambient passages and bombastic themes like it ain’t no thing. Plenty of tense dramatic music here that will certainly appeal to horror soundtrack aficionados. On Relapse.

Tuff Life

Portland producer Strategy continues with his strategy of making house music free of any decedent high-fidelity trappings. The four tracks of Tuff Life just get straight to the gritty heart of the business, locking down the drum machine thud and acidic synth-bass and making movements happen. Lo-fi all the way! 12” vinyl release on Endless Flight.

The Bats
The Deep Set

Returning with another (9th) edition of jangly guitar-led pop, The Bats bring us 12-track offering - The Deep Set. Propelled by an unstoppable rhythm section, this is the Glasgow-incepted outfit exactly how we know them. As confident, politically-tinged and direct as ever, the New Zealand 4-piece are doing what they do best.

The Clean

The Clean’s Getaway album (geddit?) was released in 2001, by which point New Zealand’s finest underground indie boys were in a position to apply fancy production to their sound. They still sound gorgeously shambling however, e.g. just the way you want them to be. Two tracks even feature members of Yo La Tengo! Now Getaway is reissued in double CD / double LP editions by Merge.

The Dean Ween Group
The Deaner Album

Dean Ween makes his debut as a solo artist. Ween’s skills like in his classic rock style guitar playing, but it is his backing band that really give him the vehicle in which he can shine. I mean, multiple members of Parliament-Funkadelic and a Meat Puppet are all involved, so The Deaner Album really knows how to funk and groove. Double LP on the Schnitzel label.

The Doors
London Fog 1966

A super-treat for fans of The Doors has been pulled from the archives: recordings from Jim and the boys’ time as house band at LA bar The London Fog circa 1966. This previously unreleased audio is the earliest documentation of the band known to exist, and the tracks are presented in suitably grand style. The box-set, limited to 18,000 copies, contains CD, 10” vinyl, and replicas of posters, coasters, set-lists, programs etc. Out via Rhino.

The Flaming Lips
Oczy Mlody

Fewer band's have remained so deliciously weird and consistently influential in the universe of alternative rock than The Flaming Lips. Led by the eerie and pounding The Castle, Oczy Mlody becomes the latest addition to a bulging catalogue - which continues to reinvent and surprise over 24 years down the line.

The Men
Devil Music

On Devil Music, The Men decided to throw a few new ideas into the mix such as cassette cut-ups and sax. It was recorded over one weekend in January 2016. They used the fact that they’d decided to make an album for themselves as inspiration. Devil Music is the Brooklyn punk rockers 6th album, but first since leaving the Sacred Bones label.

The New Lines
Love and Cannibalism

The New Lines are a group from contemporary New York who dream of existing in early 1970’s suburban England. Fortunately for us, they have recorded those, dreams, in which they frolic around within the sounds of psych-pop, eerie folk and library music. Love and Cannibalism is an atmospheric trip and no mistake. Pressed to vinyl in an edition of 300 and released by Feral Child Recordings.

The Oscillation / 10,000 Russos
Fuzz Club 10" Split Single No. 9

The Oscillation and 10,000 Russos join forces to produce 14 minutes of distorted and sinister psychedelia. Titled Fuzz Club 10" Split Single No.9, the coming together of two pioneers doesn't disappoint as their murky and avant-garde brainchild is an exhilarating and fuzzy soup of snaring instrumentation.

The Underground Youth
A Lo-Fi Cinematic Landscape

This hazy and ambient collection of instrumentals is A Lo-Fi Cinematic Landscape, thought up by Berlin creative The Underground Youth aka Craig Dyer. The release was intended to accompany a short story, awash with damming and fateful melancholy, that was never fully conceived.

Pop Ambient 2017

Just like clockwork (or like the recurrence of a minimal four-four beat), Kompakt land the latest edition of their famed Pop Ambient compilation series on us. The class of 2017 includes Stephan Mathieu, The Orb, Anton Kubikov, Max Würden and many more, and the resulting suite is a gorgeously textured set of magic ambience. CD / LP release on Kompakt.
