A Winged Victory For The Sullen
A Winged Victory For The Sullen

On their eponymous 2011 debut LP, A Winged Victory For The Sullen mapped out the course they have followed ever since. Everyone expected a union of Stars Of The Lid’s Adam Wiltzie and composer Dustin O’Halloran would likely produce some sort of spectral beauty, but no-one fully anticipated how richly evocative ‘A Winged Victory For The Sullen’ would be. This is cinematic and lush contemporary classical composition in the Nils Frahm vein. Peter Broderick and Hildur Guðnadóttir contribute.

Animal Collective
Merriweather Post Pavilion

One of the Animals discovered that it sounds pretty darned rad if you play two or three Beach Boys songs at once. He told the rest of the Collective and, lo, t’was the birth of Merriweather Post Pavilion, and yea, it did dominate anno 2009 most ruthlessly. Precisely like the little green things on the front cover, the contents of Animal Collective’s eighth album are continuously lurching to and fro no matter what you do. Hang on tight!

Common Era

Vinyl and CD reissue of Belong's Common Era, the first long player to be released since the celebrated but underexposed October Language. This album retains the fuzzed out ambience but augments the gorgeous, Hecker-esque wooziness with a more song based, shoegaze approach, replete with drums and vocals.

Boards of Canada
Music Has The Right To Children

Boards of Canada’s legendary debut LP tapped charmingly into its generation’s nostalgia for dodgy TV reception, public service announcements and unforgettable classroom mnemonics. It did so within a contemporary framework of analogue synthesisers and hip-hop rhythms, with a great ear for groove and melody. Today, the mutant, hybrid descendent of BoC’s yearning style is vaporwave, innit. Oh well.

Death And Vanilla
Death And Vanilla

The year was 2012 when we first got offered copies of this, the first album from Death and Vanilla. It was a Normans favourite but like all good things disappeared very quickly. Fire Records have since helped take the band to new levels of popularity by unleashing the band's second album 'Where the Wild Things Are' and now that they are playing enormo-dromes have kindly re-issued their earlier hard-to-find work including this album that according to his review seemed to cause Phil immense personal hygiene problems on first listening.

DJ Shadow

DJ Shadow’s sample-built 1996 debut album Entroducing….. has all the drama you’d expect from a title with ellipses two-thirds longer than the standard. As tense as it slaps, this is truly one of the the best instrumental trip/hip-hop albums ever made. The deluxe edition comes with expanded liner notes, photos, alternate versions, and remixes from the likes of Kuedo and Teklife.

Things We Lost In The Fire

On Low albums, the heart flutters and then stops altogether, the hushed harmonies of Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker slowing into nothingness -- whether over delicate strums or ascendent and doomy rock fanfare. Things We Lost In the Fire is arguably the band's opus, offering each iteration of their sound at its most emotional devastating.

PJ Harvey
Let England Shake

PJ Harvey’s eighth LP, released in 2011. Claimed to be influenced by an eclectic range of artists, from Salvador Dali and T.S. Eliot to The Velvet Underground. Polly Jean uses her flexible vocals and eclectic musical styles to create a haunting reflection on war and England’s relationship with it. LP or CD on Island.

Portishead have kept a low profile in the nine years since Third was released. Will they ever release another album? If not, the savage trip-hop trailblazers certainly ended with something special. Reinterpreting all sorts from krautrock to folk song, the album’s menacing unease still haunts today. No wonder an entire town was named after them!

Sleaford Mods
Austerity Dogs

Austerity Dogs is the 6th album by Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods, but it’s the one that got them noticed. Since its release in 2013, the band have gone from strength to strength, being a necessary mouthpiece and cathartic outlet for many in the these austere times. They mix a punk snarl with pepped-up hip-hop beats and socially aware lyrics to make an original, energetic, angry and often witty statement that has become essential.

Spiderland (Remastered)

2014 remaster of Slint's beautiful second and final album. It comes with various outtakes and demos, as well as Breadcrumb Trail, the documentary about the album’s creation directed by Lance Bangs. The band's use of dynamics gave them an uncanny ability to bottle emotions; the words "he decided to piss", have never sounded so tragic.

Tame Impala

Come on now, we know the score with this one! Lonerism, Tame Impala's second LP, has undoubtedly become a modern classic. It catapulted the Aussie group from psych stone-rockers to a global phenomenon who sell out stadiums world-wide. 'Elephant', 'Feels Like We Only Go Backwards', 'Apocalypse Dreams' - need we say more?
