9th Wonder & Talib Kweli
Indie 500

Big name heavy hip-hop hitters Talib Kweli and 9th Wonder (like Patsy Kensit's lot but one wonder better) team up for the first time for Indie 500. These tracks bristle with energy, as fresh and playful as the cover suggests. Production guests include Hi-Tek, Nottz, and E.Jones. Out from It’s A Wonderful World Music Group.

Airbird & Napolian
Mr. Foolish

Producers Joel Ford (Ford & Lopatin, Ejecta) and Ian Evans (Napolian) have teamed up as Airbird & Napolian. The pair met whilst working for the highly regarded Software label. Collaborating on Mr. Foolish allowed them to do what they wanted to do, how they wanted to do it - mixing cosmic funk, American house and hip-hop.

Aïsha Devi
Of Matter and Spirit

Aisha Devi is a producer who stands somewhat apart from most of her peers. Of Matter And Spirit mixes Devi’s unusual vocals with hovering synth patterns to make tracks that skirt up against much contemporary electronic songcraft whilst remaining crucially different. A spiritual trip well worth your time, on Houndstooth.

Akase
Murmur

Akase is the joint work of Harry Agius (who produces as Midland) and songwriter Robbie Redway. Together, they make electro-pop with full-blown club credentials: Murmer clicks boldly into action at the start before Redway’s soulful vocals move in. The track is supported by two remixes from Ewan Pearson. 12” on !K7.

Amateur Best presents the second single from his album The Gleaners, titled They Know. This is a sharp slice of bouncy alt-pop, driven forwards by Joe Flory’s soulful, restrained vocals. Backed with a track exclusive to this release and remixes from none other than Richard Norris, this 12” package is out on Brille Inc.

Andrew Kidman
Glass Love

Andrew Kidman is both filmmaker and musician, and this release contains his self-composed soundtrack to his 2006 film Glass. Kidman apparently made the music first and then let the film (which centers around surfing) follow the sound, which is an admirable approach indeed. LP release on Anthology Recordings.

Armando Trovajoli
Ciao Rudy

Ciao Rudy was a 1966 musical that was scored by the talented Armando Trovajoli. Music from it became one of the rarest 33rpm records that RCA ever released, but this reissue and remastering from GDM makes it somewhat more available. Trovajoli’s work is as grand and dramatic as you’d expect, with a good dose of 60’s flair.

Augustus Pablo Presents Rockers International is a 1980 compilation of excellent reggae-meets-rock tracks. We’ve got the likes of Delroy Williams, Norris Reid, Jah Bull… And all of it driven forth by Pablo’s smooth-skanking, firmly-rhythmic production. Nicely affordable LP reissue on VP.

Automat
Plusminus

On CD or CD and LP pack from Bureau B. This is an interesting one, one for the dub AND techno heads, with members of Einstürzende Neubauten, Phillip Boa, and Sovetskoe Foto they draw on elements of both but successfully keep them separate. Deliciously leftfield, with a live feel throughout, it keeps the grooves of Detroit and the heavy stagger of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry.

Babes
Untitled (Five Tears)

Babes are made up of members who are all either siblings or cousins to each other. Must be an interesting dynamic, especially as they’ve been playing together since they were mere children. Untitled (Five Tears) is their debut, taking a classic girl-band ‘Wall of Sound’ approach and updating it for contemporary times. On Barsuk.

Baio
The Names

It’s the season of solo projects here at Norman Records. Known as the bass-player for upbeat rockers Vampire Weekend, Baio has released a few catchy EPs. Now he’s treating us to a proper full-length album, which navigates the outskirts of poppy electronics. The Names combines those explorations to create a satisfying and accessible listening experience.

Bernd Kistenmacher
Wake Up In The Sun

Bernd Kistenmacher grew up a little too late to roll with the Tangerine Dreams and the Klaus Schulzes of the German electronic music world, but he didn’t let that stop him: he just got hold of the same sorts of analogue synthesisers and got involved, ignoring the digital 80’s world around him. Wake Up In The Sun was first released in 1987, now reissued by Bureau B.

Bert Jansch
Moonshine

Bert Jansch records are always worth hearing, and this 1973 album is certainly no exception. Moonshine finds Jansch in a particularly traditional mode, and includes the likes of Ralph McTell as guests. This reissue is especially worth it for the amazing design of this release: the circular sleeve artwork has been transferred to the record itself as a picture disc!

Dan Wilson
All Love Is Blind

The debut solo album from The Cubicle frontman Dan Wilson looks backwards to the ballads of Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and Gordon Lightfoot, infusing them with a Liverpudlian lilt. All Love Is Blind is richly produced and infused with a roadworn melancholy that’s drenched in a typical kind of loneliness. Out on CD from Halfpenny.

Dave Jackson & The Cathedral Mountaineers
Red Fin Sunset

Red Fin Sunset is the follow up to Dave Jackson’s solo debut, Cathedral Mountain. Here, Jackson’s backing band, The Cathedral Mountaineers, featuring guitarists Robin Surtees and Greg Milton from two of Jackson’s previous bands, Benny Profane and Dead Cowboys along with keyboardist Andy Wilson are augmented by the specially assembled Cathedral Mountain choir. The album features six new songs and six reworkings of Benny Profane songs. As with Cathedral Mountain, the songs on Red Fin Sunset are stripped back to make great use of the keyboards and choir creating and expansive and impressive sound.

Dave Smolen // Hair_loss
Dave Smolen // Hair_loss

This record showcases the embryonic works of what would become Metasplice. Before this was released in 2011, Dave Smolen and Hair_Loss had recorded separately but always toured together. Their joint tours under the Malleable Records name represented what was happening in the Philadelphia electronic scene of the late 2000s. The pair’s wide rhythmic palette is a theme of this record as it always has been with their work.

Everybody's A Good Dog

Shaun Fleming, from Foxygen, is also known as Diana Coffee. His/her new album is recorded in a proper studio. Days

Earthly are an energetic duo of former roommates, who get stuck into piles of digital and analogue electronics without too much concern as to the neatness of the outcome.
