Joe Thwaites & Jim Fowler
Blood & Truth: Original Game Soundtrack

Blood & Truth is a virtual reality PS4 shooter game set in a gangster-crimey London. Rather pleasingly, the original soundtrack, put together by Joe Thwaites & Jim Fowler, avoids the lock-stock-cockney-rock approach altogether, for the more contemporary approach of, well,  orchestral grime, featuring spots from JME and Kamakaze alongside a 90-piece orchestra. Vinyl release from Black Screen.

Nite Lite
Landcestors

Landcestors is the work of Nite Lite, who individually go by Myste and Phil French. The record sees the pair artfully shaping and placing field recordings. All the sounds here are familiar, but also completely unrecognisable. The recordings all oscillate together as if they have become one single organic being.

Temples
Hot Motion

Incredibly 60s looking band in continue to make 60s influenced music shocker. Temples have been around for a good few years and with Hot Motion look set to make the so called 'big time'. The band they bring to mind is Kasabian but like, not in a bad way. Sunshine streams between the chords. On ATO Records.

Danielle de Picciotto
Deliverance

Danielle de Picciotto, singer of Space Cowboys presents an album all about the years of travelling she has done since leaving behind a permanent home in 2010. Deliverance is a somewhat ornate, baroque listen, with electronically-enhanced folkish songs that speak of both dark and positive feels. Vinyl release with Danielle’s artwork.

Organic Dial
1000

Remember Emeralds? Wondering what they've been up to since their untimely break up? Well John Elliott's been exploring dub and beatless musics alongside Andrew Veres as Organic Dial. On 1000 (which may also be called ????) distills their sound even more fully than their previous efforts, to create something extremely direct.

Max de Wardener
Kolmar

Max de Wardener makes his debut appearance for Village Green Recordings with his latest album Kolmar, deliberately selected strange and sometimes redundant instruments from the early-to-mid 20th century. Fans of classic krautrock, particularly very early Kraftwerk and prime-time Can, are sure to love it!

Kacy & Clayton
Carrying On

Taking cues from fifty years’ worth of American and British folk and country rock, Canadian second cousins Kacy and Clayton present their third studio album. Carrying On, inspired by a massive period on the road of nearly two years, is a classic travelogue record and is produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco.

Beezewax
Peace Jazz

Dealing in a broad mixture of power-pop, emo and indie-rock indebted to basically Bob Mould’s entire career, the reformed Norwegian act Beezewax announce a new studio album in Peace Jazz. The eight-track collection, out on Sellout! Music, includes 2018’s comeback single ‘Rainbows’.

Roxy Girls
A Poverty Attention

Sunderland-based newcomers Roxy Girls continue to build up a head of steam with their first mini-album, A Poverty of Attention. Recorded with Field Music’s Peter Brewis and released on the fine Moshi Moshi label, it’s seven tracks of discordant, angular post-punk that wants to save you from real life. Inspired by the likes of XTC and Wire.

Oscar Scheller
HTTP404

Once touted as the saviour of British pop in some quarters, songwriter-for-hire and producer Oscar Scheller returns with his sophomore album HTTP404. Boasting collaborations with Lily Allen, Ashnikko and Sarah Midori Perri of Kero Kero Bonito, it promises a more reflective take on the exuberance of his debut Cut & Paste.

Pelican
Forever Becoming (2019 Remix)

Beefed-up version of Pelican’s 2013 LP Forever Becoming here. Southern Lord have given producer Chris Common another crack at mixing the record, and the result adds more definition and low-end to the band’s expansive post-metal instrumentals. Also included on the 2019 Remix of Forever Becoming is ‘Bardo’, a track that was previously only available on Pelican’s Japanese releases.

Lloyd McNeill
Elegia

Soul Jazz Records’ run of Lloyd McNeill reissues bears more fruit with a remastered edition of 1980’s Elegia. A private-press LP that has been out of print for close to four decades, Elegia is another elegant set of spiritual jazz from the underrated McNeill. Some tracks show off Brazilian and Latin influences, while album centrepiece ‘Elegiac Suite For Elizabeth’ is a gorgeous blend of Claude Debussy, John Coltrane and Nina Simone.

Steve Lacy
Apollo XXI

Here we have the long-awaited debut LP from The Internet’s Steve Lacy. Though Apollo XXI is Lacy’s first solo full-length, we doubt this precocious young chap was feeling the pressure too much - when you’ve made beats for Kendrick Lamar, given a TED Talk and walked the runway at Paris Fashion week before turning 20 you probably don’t even know what pressure is. Lacy’s carefree approach translates into this gorgeous neo-soul set. Dropping just as the weather heats up, Apollo XXI is a perfect summer jam collection.

Grant Green
Grant’s First Stand

Though Grant’s First Stand isn’t technically the first set Grant Green taped for Blue Note - that honour goes to the recordings collected as 2001’s First Session - it was definitely the first LP that the famed jazz guitarist released through the label. On this record Green’s unusual trio (drums, organ and guitar) front their own take on the contemporaneous sounds of hard bop and balladry. The result is an album that still surprises and thrills all these years later.

Johnny Griffin
Introducing

Blue Note reissue the classic debut LP from late saxophonist Johnny Griffin. 1956’s Introducing Johnny Griffin kick-started one of the longest and most distinguished careers in jazz, but even well over a half a century later this record still ranks among the ‘Little Giant’s finest. Introducing’s opening track ‘Mil Dew’ is one of the essential hard bop texts.

Freddie Hubbard
Open Sesame

This new edition of Freddie Hubbard’s famous 1960 debut LP fronts up the original in its full glory. Even all these years later Open Sesame remains a exercise in bespoke cool from the famous trumpeter/flugelhorn player. Along with a band that featured Tina Brooks (tenor sax), McCoy Tyner (piano), Sam Jones (bass) and Clifford Jarvis (drums), Hubbard swings through a set of originals and covers here with effortless grace. Blue Note’s latest pressing of Open Sesame features liner notes penned by the late Ira Gitler.

Fangclub
Vulture Culture

Irish alt. Rock three-piece, Fangclub, follow their 2017 eponymous debut with Vulture Culture. If you’re a fan of Biffy Clyro or Muse then you should really check this lot out - you may have already seen them supporting either band. Jabu
Fool If / Wounds (Jay Glass Dubs & SKRS Remixes)

Bristol trio Jabu’s aching vocals, sparse layering and ripping good production really worked wonders on 2017’s Sleep Heavy. Standout ‘Wounds’ is alt-RnB at its most concise and beautiful. In the hands of Athenian dub disassembler Jay Glass Dubs and shaggy dancehall dub disruptors SKRS (a.k.a. Seekers International), ‘Fool If’ and ‘Wounds’ are given gritty, cityscape makeovers.

Petrels
Dusk Loom

Having enjoyed a prodigious output of an album at least every 12 months from 2011 to 2016, The Dusk Loom has taken Oliver Barrett a comparatively lengthy three years to put together, having stepped back from his Petrels project briefly. Finding inspiration ancient and modern mythology, otherworldliness is the key theme on this seventh record.

DMX Krew
Malekko Phase Mod

Performing under various aliases throughout his career, electronica artist Edward Upton’s latest DMX Krew release Malekko Phase Mod fits effortlessly into a line of work that goes back to the mid-Nineties. Classic, Chicago acid house beats, rubbery basslines and squidgy synths are the name of the game, with four laid-back tracks split over a 12” EP.

Caroline K
Dont Believe It's Over

Caroline K - real name Caroline Kaye Walters - was one of the founders of Nocturnal Emissions, one of Britain’s most forward-thinking experimental groups of the Eighties. Mannequin Records now unearths a long-lost demo tape from K’s Brixton studio: four versions of a track titled ‘Don’t Believe It’s Over’ presented over a 12” EP.

Spring Heel Jack and Wadada Leo Smith
The Sweetness of the Water

Spring Heel Jack, aka John Coxon and Ashley Wales, bring in American avant-jazz composer and performer Wadada Leo Smith for a fabulous session of electroacoustically-tinged modern improvisation. And look beyond the headline artistes of The Sweetness of the Water and you’ll even find guest appearances by the likes of Evan Parker and Mark Sanders! Plenty of chops here.

Mark Lanegan Band
Somebody's Knocking

Somebody’s Knocking is the eleventh solo album by ex-Screaming Trees frontman, Mark Lanegan. Lanegan says that Joy Division, The Stooges, Love and, perhaps surprisingly, New Order have all influenced this album. Despite having always been a fan of electronic music, the sounds are now making their way into his otherwise fags-and-whiskey-drenched gruff rock sound as it’s what he listens to most these days.

Bobby Blackbird
The Master Blenda

We very nearly didn’t get The Master Blenda, the first solo single from Equiknoxx mastermind Bobby Blackbird. Shortly after the tune's conception Blackbird was in a near-fatal car crash and spent months in hospital. He emerged more determined than ever to complete the track, one that turns away from Equiknoxx’s twisted dancehall style and heads towards a hotstepping ska sound. Turned out with a band that included several members of Raging Fyah, ‘The Master Blenda’ is a triumph in every sense of the word. Exile The Brave and Blackbird’s Equiknoxx buddy Time Cow dub it out on the B-side.

Scenes de la Bohème
Standing In The Rain

It’s a surprise that we’ve got Scenes De La Boheme’s Standing In The Rain at all. The solo project of one Anthony Waites, Scenes De La Boheme only released one hyper-limited 7” back in 1982. The two Talk Talk-ish art-rock tracks were never sent out to the NME or BBC or whatever, and the project lay dormant until the 7” started to circulate among collectors in the 2000’s. Now interest in Scenes De La Boheme has grown enough that Minimal Wave have issued Standing In The Rain, an LP that brings together the 1982 single with four unreleased cuts. This autumnal set is an outstanding example of golden-age synth-pop/coldwave.

Kevin Krauter
Changes

The excellently named Kevin Krauter gets a UK edition of his 2016 EP Changes courtesy of Winspear (The Lemon Twigs, Barrie). Will Burns & Hannah Peel
Chalk Hill Blue

Musician Hannah Peel and poet Will Burns link up for the dreamy Chalk Hill Blue. Neither artist takes the lead here, sometimes Burns responds to Peel and sometimes Peel to Burns. The result is always captivating; Burns delivers his poems with authority and conviction, while Peel's music is as eccentric as usual.

Stine Janvin
Fake Synthetic Music

Norwegian composer and performer Stine Janvin enters PAN’s labyrinth with new album Fake Synthetic Music. Mainly for voice and delay, the album tests what can be done with such a limited (conceptually, at least) source of sound. Very exciting, and not to be brushed off as similar to Norwegian voice performer Maja Ratkje; the two get distinct results from their processes.

Textasy
Off The Leash

Texas born, now based in Berlin producer Textasy drops his debut release after being featured on compilations from Art-Aud and Texas Recordings Underground. Off The Leash bring spikey electro acid that at times hits on Gatekeeper arpeggiators and 80s film tension to euphoric club breakbeats and sloppy electronics.

Tougher Than Leather

The fourth album by Run-DMC gets a nice new re-pressing for 2017. Tougher Than Leather, first released in 1988, has a couple of the gang’s big tunes on it (‘Run’s House’, ‘Mary, Mary’), plus a particularly rich flurry of sampladelic turntablism from Jam-Master Jay. Vinyl reissue on Get On Down.

The Fall
Hex Enduction Hour

Arguably the single greatest album in The Fall’s 41 year history, 1982’s Hex Enduction Hour documents Mark E. Smith at the peak of his powers, fronting the most powerful lineup of the band. Steve Hanley’s bass is generally to the fore, flanked by guitarists Craig Scanlon and Marc Riley, and crucially featuring the twin drums of Paul Hanley and Karl Burns. At this point MES had a knack for combining kitchen-sink realism with the uncanny and supernatural, refracted through a Burroughs-esque prism. Recorded in a draughty cinema in Hitchin and a cave in Reykjavík, the album is bombastic, abstract, abrasive, hilarious, belligerent and utterly exhilarating. The original crammed an hour of music onto a single LP, but this remastered Superior Viaduct reissue achieves much better sound quality than letting it sprawl over a double. If you’re looking for a way in to a potentially bewildering discography, start here!

White Lies
To Lose My Life (10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)

We all remember when we were when White Lies released To Lose My Life don't we. Don't we?? Well September 2009 should be indelibly stamped on your brain as the month their debut was unleashed and incredibly went straight to the very top of the UK album chart. Well blow me down with a feather. It managed to score 58 on Metacritic and was described by the Guardian as "promising, if unremarkable" so it's high time we got a tenth anniversary re-issue which thrillingly contains demo and live tracks discovered in bassist Charles Cave's personal cupboard.
