Modern practitioners of the Berlin school inspired sound take us on a trip with their analogue and modular synthesizers fully set to cosmic. Presented on eyeball melting splatter vinyl and housed in a beautiful gatefold sleeve - tip for all sonic psychonauts and armchair voyagers.

Dead Famous People
Harry

Dons Savage of Dead Famous People could be described as the nearly person of the New Zealand/ Flying Nun scene. She was perhaps too early to catch a ride on the coattails of the likes of the Chills and the Clean but after moving to London she was temporarily part of the early Saint Etienne line up singing on their Let's Kiss and Make Up debut. Now years later she is back with an album of all new material which hints that her time may have eventually come.

Bob Mould
Blue Hearts

Bob Mould's previous album Sunshine Rock was a slab of feel good upbeat alt rock which saw the former Husker Du and Sugar frontman in buoyant mood. Not this one. Mould is inspired by the absolute state of things and has produced his most visceral and angry work in decades. Blue Hearts is explosive and confrontational but as always contains the big super loud hooks he has always been so adept at.

Travis
10 Songs

Fleetingly the biggest band in the country before somebody invented Coldplay, Scottish indie-rockers Travis have been soldiering along manfully for almost two decades after their commercial high-point came and went. The stripped-back 10 Songs is their ninth studio album, and a 2xLP blue/red vinyl special edition comes with a bonus disc of demos.

Harmonious Thelonious
Plong

Harmonious Thelonious is Stefan Schwander, a musician from Dusseldorf, Germany. His usual M.O. is to mix US minimalism with African rhythms and European-style melodicism. When Bureau B asked him to record for them he aimed to make his sound more industrial, incorporating non-musical sounds alongside traditional instruments. The satisfyingly named Plong is the result.

Thunderbolt
Love Is So Funny

Love is So Funny is an ultra-rare, highly sought after boogie-funk classic by Thunderbolt which was originally released at the beginning of the ‘80s. The man behind the song is Mr. Pete Warner who has worked with the likes of Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin, Herbie Mann and Patrick Adams to name a few. 12” on Omaggio.

Tom Holkenborg
Sonic The Hedgehog: Music From The Motion Picture

Dutch composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ Tom Holkenborg has been tasked with scoring Sonic The Hedgehog. You may know Mr. Holkenborg as Junkie XL or JXL under which names he’s put out a number of trance, electronica and big beat records. He is no stranger to film scores however, having scored films such as Mad Max: Fury Road, Deadpool, Batman v Superman, Alita: Battle Angel, among others. This score matches the pace of the action-packed movie perfectly.

Boyracer
On A Promise

Stewart Anderson's long running pop/punk vehicle Boyracer returns good and strong for 2020 with what we think is their 13th full length record. Like their other work it's full of short, sharp DIY punk rock songs led by Anderson's emotional delivery above squalls of feedback and guitar racket. On a Promise could be seen as a celebration of sorts of the 30 year lifespan band with various guests from their past popping up for cameos.

AMM
AMMMusic

Oren Ambarchi’s label Black Truffle reissues a genuine avant-landmark: the first album from AMM. AMMMUSIC landed in the 1960’s like a slab of alien matter, sounding almost entirely unlike anything else. Keith Rowe, Cornelius Cardew and the rest broke out of all the musical norms, and the world is still reeling to this day. Remastered and presented in a replica sleeve.

Jack Briece
Heterophonious Fool

Self-produced in a batch of 50 cassettes and only distributed privately, Heterophonious Fool was the only studio album from avant-garde / experimental electronic artist Jack Briece, released four years before his tragically young death in 1988. His reputation ought to be boosted with this vinyl re-issue via Concentric Circles.

Caro
Burrows

Beginning life as a bedroom project from composer Adam Pardey and then expanded through connections at Leeds College of Music around 2014, Caro at last releases its debut studio album, Burrows, after a long string of excellent singles. Cathartic and emotional, it’s 21st century post-pop at its finest.

Metrist
Pollen Pt. II

Brighton-based producer Joseph Higgins delivers the second part of his planned trilogy of EPs titled Pollen, under his Metrist alias. Pollen Pt. II is even more intense and dancefloor-friendly than the first instalment last year, pulling together gaudy synths, menacing bass drops and cutting-edge sound design.

Tigran Hamasyan
The Call Within

Armenian jazz pianist and composer Tigran Hamasyan makes complex records that you could argue sound like two different records playing at once. The overall effect is challenging yet engrossing. The Call Within is an album inspired by the myths and history of Armenia. On lead track ‘Levitation 21’ The piano is both gentle and frenetic with bass and drums to match.

Stick In The Wheel
Hold Fast

Stick in the Wheel are a London-based folk duo whose traditionally melodic yet powerful delivery is apposite for their political and socially aware lyrics. Hold Fast follows 2018’s Follow Them True and is their third album. It arguably comes at a time when their political punch could be just what we need.

Following quickly on from last year’s Isa album and a collaboration release with Varg2TM, Danish producer Loke Rahbek reveals another Croatian Amor full-length. All In The Same Breath is a beautiful blend of Rahbek’s output so far, with upbeat, mellow house rubbing up against sleepy electronica.

Jeff Rosenstock
No Dream

Jeff Rosenstock has been a central figure in the independent punk scene for over 15 years now, but he's only just starting to get the credit he deserves. He's fronted The Arrogant Sons of Bitches and Bomb The Music Industry, two legendary groups notorious for their raucous live shows and DIY ethics, who even went as far as letting any fan who learnt a song to play with them on stage and playing all age shows where tickets were $10 or less. His solo work is power pop played with a whole lot of punk exuberance and pace. It's packed full of melody and unforgettable hooks and will appeal to those into early punk and fans of modern hardcore and indie rock.

Bas Grossfeldt
Lost In Sensation EP

A reboot for the seminal Juan Atkins-run Detroit techno label Metroplex with this record from relative newcomer Bas Grossfeldt. Grossfeldt piqued Atkins interest with an innovative and modern take on the classic old sound and delivers a varied 12" that ranges from cinematic electronica to dubbed out hazy soundscapes.

Shakey
Shakey

Back in my day, Shakey is what we used to call ol' wobble legs and Cardiff's answer to Elvis - Shakin' Stevens, but times have changed, and this Shakey is a new project from Silvia Kastel (of Control Unit and the Ultramarine label) and Lizzie Davis (Wilted Woman) in which they explore their love for digi-dub, jungle and ambient. It's a far cry from 'This Ole House' but probably all the better for it.

New Fries
Is The Idea Of Us

New Fries are a three-piece out of Toronto who like to get their art rock / no wave ideas down quickly. As a result have made this short, sharp 6 song LP of avant rock with funky bass lines, rudimentary percussion and startling guitar patterns. Somewhere betwixt Pylon and the Tom Tom Club they have a somewhat total disregard for structure and as a result, this is very promising indeed.

The Times
Red With Purple Flashes

A re-issue on 7” vinyl for ‘Red With Purple Flashes’, the debut single from Edward Ball’s acclaimed cult band The Times, originally released in 1981 on Dan Treacy’s Whaam! label which now changes hands for eye-watering sums of money. Boasting the original Warhol spoof artwork, it’s a classic piece of the kind of Sixties revivalism that became popular in the Eighties.

David Dondero
The Transient

A long overdue re-issue on heavyweight vinyl for David Dondero’s cult classic 2003 album The Transient. Taking its cues from classic Americana going back to Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger and updating it for the new millennium, it comes on a special ‘ashes-on-the-highway’ coloured vinyl too.

The fourteenth album from the never ending American band Weezer is not a self-titled thing named after a colour but...and get this... is their love letter to metal. Yup it might not be obvious these power-pop/nerd rock practitioners were big metal heads back in the day but Van Weezer worships at the altar of KISS, Rush and Slayer and their all big hair guitar solos but keeps a large dose of Weezer present and correct.

Born Ruffians
Juice

It did well for Lizzo, so Born Ruffians thought they’d piggy back her success by calling their new album Juice. Of course, the Canadian four-piece play an angular brand of indie rock and not scantily-clad flute pop. This album has a more polished approach from the band and sees them mining the mid-70s for  sounds.

Featuring guest spots from former Psychic Ills members Chris Millstein and Jimy SeiTang, it seems to be gentler and mellower in places compared to 2018’s debut album, drawing on jangle-pop influences from C86 to Real Estate to mix with their scuzzy, VU sound.

Mini Trees
Slip Away / Steady Me

Los Angeles based musician has an obsession with miniature things so it seems sorta apt she'd call her project Mini Trees. This album is actually a collection of her two EPs to date Slip Away and Steady Me on which she takes influence from the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Bon Iver to produce heartfelt songs which lyrically discuss the ups and downs and uncertainty of that thing we all call love.

Rabies Babies
Rabies Babies EP

Remember rabies? A kind of early day Coronavirus spread by dogs. Horrible. The band name is the first clue that this is an uncompromising group. They've been at it since 1999 and create a DIY punk racket that matches a raw and dirty sound with lyrics on all matter of subjects from sexual assaults by members of punk bands to sexism in cycling. Please note that only one song is swear word free. Angry, brutal but a hell of a fun mess.

Personalia, her second album, is inspired by the pop sounds of Abba and Kate Bush and built with her left field approach. Themes of environment, feminism, money and power dominate the lyrics. On Captured Tracks.

Overflow
Heil Eris / Enjoy

Here are more sounds from  he past regurgitated for ears young and old. These tracks were originally lost cassette culture obscurities from the 1980s featuring live takes (it's what we all had to do back then) using drums, synths, affected voices. The results veer from cold/synth wave pop to longform ambient pieces that sound remarkably modern. First time on wax restored and remastered from the original tapes.

Nun Attax / Five Go Down To The Sea? / Beethoven
Hiding From The Landlord

Finbarr Donnelly came from Cork and played in a number of bands from the late ‘70s until his tragic death in 1989. His first band were post-punk outfit Nun Attax who later changed their name to Five Go Down To The Sea? and adopted a more off-kilter indie sound. They released records through Glee Club, Abstract Sounds and Creation. Their penchant for chaos meant the band split before returning, briefly, under the name Beethoven. Hiding From The Landlord gathers Donnelly’s musical history in one place.

Golden Retriever & Chuck Johnson
Rain Shadow

We all know the Golden Retriever dog which happily lolls it's way across England's parks but this Golden Retriever is a clarinet 'n' synth duo known for their unique improvisations. Here they hook up with guitarist Chuck Johnson on four long pieces which see them playing slow moving but lush instrumental music in which each player tracked their playing separately but somehow results in an intuitive and creative work.

Infinity Forms Of Yellow Remember
Infinity Forms Of Yellow Remember

Infinity Forms of Yellow Remember are a psych/space rock band from Cardiff. They trade in being loud, being repetitive and unfettered use of wah-wah pedals, so you know, excellent, man. What makes it really good, though, is on top of that swirling psych racket are some glorious melodies. Self titled LP on Cardinal Fuzz.

Street Kids
Game No. 1 / Last Night (You Moved Me)

Game No.1 by South African 5-piece Street Kids was originally released in 1983. It features all the smooth, soulful, squelchy disco funk you could want on one track. On the other side you get (Last Night) You Moved Me, an even smoother tune to end the night with. Both tracks featured on the band’s 1984 album Dancin’ All Night. On Rush Hour.

VII is one of the rare instances where an outright exercise in nostalgia counts as a valid artistic endeavour.

Bobby Hutcherson
The Kicker

The Kicker was the debut record vibraphonist extraordinaire Bobby Hutcherson made for Blue Note but it wasn't released at the time and they put out his later Dialogue instead. After staying i the vaults for many years it was finally released in 1999 and now finally gets a vinyl release. If you know Grant Green's Opus Idle Moments you may dig this as it is a kind of sequel and contains the exact same personnel.

070 Shake
Modus Vivendi

070 Shake first came to prominence following her work on Kanye West's Wyoming Sessions and now it's time for the hugely anticipated debut album. It is a varied ride but showcases some of the more reflective side of her work which is emotionally open as the artist poured out her feelings. Both up tempo at times and ethereal it comes from a deeply personal space. One to watch we reckon.

Pavement
Sensitive Euro Man / Brink of the Clouds / Candylad

A speech bubble-shaped picture-disc 7” vinyl from Matador to mark the 25th anniversary of Pavement’s 1995 album Wowee Zowee. A surprisingly diverse artistic sidestep that wrong-footed many fans and critics at the time, these two tracks - ‘Sensitive Euro Man’ and ‘Brink Of The Clouds / Candylad’ - appeared on the Sordid Sentinels 2xCD re-issue version from 2006. Respectively, they were taken from the I Shot Andy Warhol documentary film soundtrack and an Australian radio session from 1994.

Young Knives
Barbarians

Judging by their  new single, Sheep Tick, Young Knives have taken a wildly different approach to their fifth album, Barbarians. They have a darker sound and there are more electronics and less of the snappy XTC-influenced indie that I know them for. The sound does suit the subject matter, however, with them using Straw Dogs, a novel by John Gray, to assess if violence is just part of human nature and how we cope with that.

Jerry Joseph
Beautiful Madness

Although he has practically no profile in Britain at all, in America Jerry Joseph is a cult hero, beloved by artists such as Drive-By Truckers and Jason Isbell, who both appear as backing musicians on Joseph’s first British release Beautiful Madness. Written over a number of years and inspired by the guitar school charities Joseph runs in war zones, it ought to represent a significant spotlight on his reputation.

Lea Bertucci
Acoustic Shadows

Acoustic Shadows was initially an event which took place in the body of the Deutzer Bridge in Koln, Germany in 2018. The sound installation which lasted over a week was then edited down by artist and composer Lea Bertucci to form this LP featuring segments of the results. But it didn't stop there, they've actually made a sample library of the sounds for other musicians to use. A fascinating sounding project.

Whitmer Thomas
Songs From The Golden One

Whitmer Thomas is a very typical millennial performer. He's a comic, a skateboarder, a musician and he doesn't comb his hair on his album sleeves. My grandparents would be horrified but he's done pretty well for himself fronting his own HBO comedy special and now releasing songs from the series. If you are worrying that comedy and songs go together like the words 'Not the Nine O'Clock News' and 'funny' then you have to realise that Thomas makes intrepid darkwave  - a little like John Maus and full of witty asides and observations.

Working Men’s Club have been earmarked as a band to keep an eye on for a good few months now. With a few singles under their belt, they are ready to unleash their eponymous debut album. CLT DRP
Without The Eyes

Brighton lot CLT DRP (I dare not even guess how that is supposed to be pronounced  - this is a family website after all) explore facets of feminism on this, their debut album on Small Pond. The band hail from all over the planet and have come together to make brutal, thought provoking punk that helps comfort those finding their way in this crazy, messed up world.

Yumiko Morioka
Resonance

Yumiko Morioka originally released her only solo recording Resonance in 1987. It fell by the wayside in the noisy '80s but slowly picked up listeners via blog posts and You Tube clips. It is a delicate and spacious album of low key piano  - it's understated beauty could be compared perhaps to Erik Satie. This limited re-issue is timely for Morioka who lost her home and possessions in the 2017 Californian wildfires. In any case it's something soul stirring to discover.
