Rabies Babies
Rabies Babies EP

Remember rabies? A kind of early day Coronavirus spread by dogs. Horrible. The band name is the first clue that this is an uncompromising group. They've been at it since 1999 and create a DIY punk racket that matches a raw and dirty sound with lyrics on all matter of subjects from sexual assaults by members of punk bands to sexism in cycling. Please note that only one song is swear word free. Angry, brutal but a hell of a fun mess.

Tomorrow Again is Becky Jones’s first Saint Saviour album in more than half a decade. Unlike her previous effort In The Seams where we left her in late 2014, there’s something more introspective yet equally assertive about her third record, taking cues from great recent records by the likes of Sharon Van Etten and Aldous Harding.

Jay Daniel
SSD EP

Following records on Ninja Tune sister label Technicolour, Theo Parrish's Sound Signature, Kyle Hall's Wild Oats and Steven Julien's Apron Records. Detroit producer Jay Daniel returns with the SSD EP on his own Watusi High label. The four cuts provide something of a snapshot of Jay Daniel in the middle of an artistic transition. The first side of this 12” release sees him indulge in languid, low-bpm mood pieces, while the reverse side contains two rough-hewn yet sparkling house numbers.

London-based collective Archive have now been making their unfairly under the radar music for 25 years and what better way to celebrate than by producing a new album of new versions of some of their best loved songs. The group have always blended dark trip-hop, post rock and electronica into a unique sonic brew so it should be interesting to see how they rebrand these tracks.

Gherkin Jerks
1990 EP

Gherkin Jerks may mean nothing to you but it was the one time project of house  legend Mr Larry Heard (Mr Fingers etc). Gherkin Jerks
Stomp The Beat EP

Larry Heard is a bit of a legend of Chicago House but unless you are very lucky you won't own a copy of his Gherkin Jerks output.  The moniker was an outlet for his more experimental and techno-leaning recordings and this six track release is a far cry from the work he is most known for as Mr Fingers. A rare chance to get some seriously rare recordings.

Just like the 7.42 Skipton to Leeds service I Like Trains haven't been seen in about eight years but with humanity about to collapse there's no-one better to attempt to make the soundtrack for the impending doom. KOMPROMAT attempts to make sense of the chaos taking influence from the metallic post-punk likes of Joy Division, Gang of Four and the Birthday Party on a welcome return for this distinctive band.

Overflow
Heil Eris / Enjoy

Here are more sounds from  he past regurgitated for ears young and old. These tracks were originally lost cassette culture obscurities from the 1980s featuring live takes (it's what we all had to do back then) using drums, synths, affected voices. The results veer from cold/synth wave pop to longform ambient pieces that sound remarkably modern. First time on wax restored and remastered from the original tapes.

Nun Attax / Five Go Down To The Sea? / Beethoven
Hiding From The Landlord

Finbarr Donnelly came from Cork and played in a number of bands from the late ‘70s until his tragic death in 1989. His first band were post-punk outfit Nun Attax who later changed their name to Five Go Down To The Sea? and adopted a more off-kilter indie sound. They released records through Glee Club, Abstract Sounds and Creation. Their penchant for chaos meant the band split before returning, briefly, under the name Beethoven. Hiding From The Landlord gathers Donnelly’s musical history in one place.

Markus Lake is a big noise in the Montreal DIY community. Over the past decade or so he has been releasing music under the name Markus Floats. Alison Chesley, Steve Albini, Tim Midyett
Music from the film Girl on the Third Floor

Look at that terrifying house. It depicts the upcoming horror film Girl on the Third Floor made by director Travis Stevens. To create a suitably creepy soundtrack he recruited Steve Albini to put together a collective and he in turn drafted in Tim Midyett (Mint Mile, Silkworm) and Alison Chesley (Helen Money). A truly fascinating sounding concept.

The Last Eidolon

This is the third album by Old Tower and features a story so relevant that it could have featured on tonights 6 o' Clock News... a kingdom laid to waste by its own ruler through dark magic and destructive spirits. Stephanie Sokolinski, or Soko, to her fans is an L.A.-based French singer / songwriter and actor. Feel Feelings is her third album. The production has a little more meat on the bones compared to her earlier work, although it is still resolutely mid-fi, in the vein of Connan Mockasin or Ariel Pink’s work circa 2010 and onwards. Coincidentally, she has collaborated with Mr. Pink in the past. On Because Music.

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith
The Mosaic Of Transformation

The Mosaic Of Transformation is the eighth album by Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. The composer and musician is a big hit around these parts, i.e. Norman Records. Her 2016 album Ears was awarded the coveted Norman Records Album of the Years and it’s follow-up, The Kid, received a 9/10 review from our Laurie. This time out, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith has written and ode to electricity. Our hopes are high.

Steven Wilson
The Future Bites

The Future Bites is the sixth album by singer, songwriter and producer Steven Wilson. The album explores how modern life’s addictions and fads, from detoxing to anxiety, branded trainers to teeth whitening affect us. Wilson has been a part of numerous musical projects, most notably Porcupine Tree. He has also recently been responsible for re-mixing and re-mastering some classic prog rock albums, a genre close to his heart.

Jerry Joseph
Beautiful Madness

Although he has practically no profile in Britain at all, in America Jerry Joseph is a cult hero, beloved by artists such as Drive-By Truckers and Jason Isbell, who both appear as backing musicians on Joseph’s first British release Beautiful Madness. Written over a number of years and inspired by the guitar school charities Joseph runs in war zones, it ought to represent a significant spotlight on his reputation.

Lea Bertucci
Acoustic Shadows

Acoustic Shadows was initially an event which took place in the body of the Deutzer Bridge in Koln, Germany in 2018. The sound installation which lasted over a week was then edited down by artist and composer Lea Bertucci to form this LP featuring segments of the results. But it didn't stop there, they've actually made a sample library of the sounds for other musicians to use. A fascinating sounding project.

Whitmer Thomas
Songs From The Golden One

Whitmer Thomas is a very typical millennial performer. He's a comic, a skateboarder, a musician and he doesn't comb his hair on his album sleeves. My grandparents would be horrified but he's done pretty well for himself fronting his own HBO comedy special and now releasing songs from the series. If you are worrying that comedy and songs go together like the words 'Not the Nine O'Clock News' and 'funny' then you have to realise that Thomas makes intrepid darkwave  - a little like John Maus and full of witty asides and observations.

Working Men's Club
Working Men's Club

Working Men’s Club have been earmarked as a band to keep an eye on for a good few months now. With a few singles under their belt, they are ready to unleash their eponymous debut album. Their music blurs the lines between indie, dance and techno. They have toured with the Fat White Family and even have a song which spells out their dislike of journalist Andrew Neil.

CLT DRP
Without The Eyes

Brighton lot CLT DRP (I dare not even guess how that is supposed to be pronounced  - this is a family website after all) explore facets of feminism on this, their debut album on Small Pond. The band hail from all over the planet and have come together to make brutal, thought provoking punk that helps comfort those finding their way in this crazy, messed up world.

Yumiko Morioka
Resonance

Yumiko Morioka originally released her only solo recording Resonance in 1987. It fell by the wayside in the noisy '80s but slowly picked up listeners via blog posts and You Tube clips. It is a delicate and spacious album of low key piano  - it's understated beauty could be compared perhaps to Erik Satie. This limited re-issue is timely for Morioka who lost her home and possessions in the 2017 Californian wildfires. In any case it's something soul stirring to discover.

The Divine Comedy
A Short Album About Love

Originally conceived as a companion to the previous year’s Casanova album and recorded with a 26-piece orchestra post-soundcheck before a show at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire, A Short Album About Love went on to be regarded by many as The Divine Comedy’s finest hour. It now gets a re-mastered re-issue on vinyl and CD, with the latter coming with a bonus disc of B-sides, demos and alternate takes plus a DVD titled A Short Film About A Short Album About Love.

The Divine Comedy
Absent Friends

Originally released in 2004 and containing the Lauren Laverne-starring ‘Come Home Billy Bird’, Neil Hannon’s eighth The Divine Comedy album gets a re-issue as part of the band’s 30th anniversary celebrations. CD edition comes with a bonus disc of B-sides, demos and alternate takes.

The Divine Comedy
Casanova

Originally released in 1997, Casanova was the commercial breakthrough for Neil Hannon’s The Divine Comedy, housing three UK Top 30 hit singles including ‘Something For The Weekend’.  It now gets a re-issue as part of the band’s 30th anniversary celebrations, with the CD edition including a bonus disc of B-sides, demos and alternate takes.

The Divine Comedy
Fin de Siècle

Originally released in 1998, Fin De Siècle was the sixth studio album by Neil Hannon’s The Divine Comedy, which spawned the band’s sole UK Top Ten hit ‘National Express’. It now gets a remastered re-issue as part of the band’s 30th anniversary celebrations, with the CD edition including a bonus disc of B-sides, demos and alternate takes.

The Divine Comedy
Liberation

Originally released in 1993, Liberation was technically the second studio album by Neil Hannon’s The Divine Comedy, but the star himself refers to it as their ‘proper debut’ because of wrangles over its predecessor Fanfare For The Comic Muse. Including the understated single ‘Lucy’, it gets a remastered re-issue as part of the band’s 30th anniversary celebrations, with the CD edition including a bonus disc of B-sides, demos and alternate takes.

The Divine Comedy
Promenade

Originally released in 1994, Promenade was the third studio album by Neil Hannon’s The Divine Comedy, delving even further into the classical-influenced stylings that he had begun to explore with Liberation and bearing a loose concept about a couple spending a day at the seaside. It gets a remastered re-issue as part of the band’s 30th anniversary celebrations, with the CD edition including a bonus disc of B-sides, demos and alternate takes.

The Divine Comedy
Bang Goes The Knighthood

Probably the best of the latterday the Divine Comedy albums, Bang Goes the Knighthood features everything we love about Neil Hannon's music - soaring melodies, beautiful arrangements and a droll lyrical persona. The difference between this and some other the Divine Comedy albums is that it is consistent from start to finish. All killer and an accomplished work from a master craftsman.

The Divine Comedy
Regeneration

Regeneration was the album where the Divine Comedy got serious. Neil Hannon put his Noel Coward hat at the door and made a soaring work that could be compared somewhat to Radiohead (perhaps partly due to Nigel Godrich being in the producer's chair). This new edition contains bonus tracks from the era on the double CD and as a download on the gatefold LP version.

The Divine Comedy
Victory for the Comic Muse

Originally released in 2006, Victory For The Comic Muse was the ninth studio album by Neil Hannon’s The Divine Comedy, unique in their catalogue as it was recorded in a little over a fortnight almost entirely from live studio takes and with minimal overdubbing. It gets a remastered re-issue as part of the band’s 30th anniversary celebrations, with the CD edition including a bonus disc of B-sides, demos and alternate takes.

The Divine Comedy
Venus, Cupid, Folly & Time - Thirty Years of The Divine Comedy

Venus, Cupid, Folly & Time is a lavish box set marking the 30th anniversary of Neil Hannon’s The Divine Comedy. Covering all 12 of the band’s witty, erudite studio albums, each of which comes with a second CD of B-sides, demos and alternate versions on top of liner notes. If that wasn’t enough, it also contains an exclusive 2xCD compilation of early material from Hannon’s personal archive, the "lost" 1990 album Fanfare For The Comic Muse and rare EPs Timewatch and Europop.

Preparing for their first full-length album with a series of highly collectable 7” singles since their formation four years ago, Now Here’s An Echo From Your Future is the moment of truth for Girls In Synthesis. Hail Nothing

In the wake of the adoration for their previous releases five years ago - the saudade EP and soma full-length - the immensely talented Singaporean duo .gif deliver another idiosyncratic album in Hail Nothing. Over its eight tracks, Weish and Din take unexpected liberties with concepts of form and content, with their trademark haunting vocals and leftfield lyrics punctuating it.

The Magic Gang
Death Of The Party

The Magic Gang have been getting played on Radio 1 and have received the accolade of Annie Mac’s Hottest Record In The World. Their new album, Death of the Party promises to be exactly the opposite of what its title suggests due to the addition of some Northern Soul grooves to their modern indie sound.

Biffy Clyro
A Celebration of Endings

Scottish alternative rock gods Biffy Clyro aim to make it three UK no.1 albums in a row with new effort A Celebration of Endings, their eighth record overall. Working with producer Rich Costey once again, the trio embrace all of the elements that have made them so acclaimed and popular throughout their two-decade career, from the jagged rock of their early years to the lighters-in-the-air stadium indie that propelled them to the top of the charts.

Mac DeMarco
Here Comes The Cowboy Demos

Never one to just toss stuff out willy nilly, Mac DeMarco is allowing us into his hallowed archive so we can hear the demos for last year's Here Comes the Cowboy album. The original LP was so minimal that it's hard to know what anything more skeletal than that would sound like other than simply being recordings of thin air. At least you get some unreleased recordings that presumably failed the Mac quality control test.

Momoko Kikuchi
Adventure

Re-mastered from the original tapes and pressed onto purple vinyl, J-pop pioneer Momoko Kikuchi’s Adventure returns to the LP format for the first time since its release way back in 1986. The sound of an already established artist discovering the full extent of their potential (Kikuchi had only just turned 18 when it was released), Adventure utterly encapsulates the sound of Eighties Japanese pop.

Macula Dog
Breezy

Produced with the help of Ariel Pink acolyte Paul D Millar, the excellent Macula Dog return with a new four-track EP presented on 12” vinyl, titled Breezy. It follows four years on from their debut album Why Do You Look Like Your Dog?, and sees the band moving into slightly more conventional territory in terms of melody and structure.

The Lemon Twigs
Songs For The General Public

Songs For The General Public is the third album from ‘70s obsessed sibling duo The Lemon Twigs. Their previous albums have been clearly influenced by Todd Rundgren. Their 2016 debut album earned them fans such as Elton John, The Roots drummer Questlove and American indie guitarist Jack Antonaoff. Foxygen, a similarly odd duo, also count themselves among their fans.

Tokimonsta
Oasis Noturno

US producer and DJ, Tokimonsta has been through the mill in the last five years. A debilitating illness which led to two brain surgeries and a loss of speech, hearing and ability to make music. She made a remarkable recovery to record the critically acclaimed Lune Rouge in 2017. Now she’s back again with Oasis Noturno, her 6th album, it punches with significant weight.

Winter
Endless Space (Between You & I)

Samira Winter delivers the third album of heady psychedelic shoegaze by her eponymous, bi-lingual indie band Winter via the Bar-None label. With lyrics as ever in both Portuguese and English, Endless Space (Between You & I) ought to see the talented songwriter and singer build up her profile even further.

Irreversible Entanglements
Irreversible Entanglements

With their new mini-odyssey ‘Bread Out of Stone’ recently landing, it’s an appropriate time for this vinyl re-issue of Irreversible Entanglements’ self-titled debut album. Originally released in 2017 and winning plaudits from The Quietus to Gilles Peterson, it essayed the experiences of Black suffering, survival and power over four wonderful free-jazz explorations.

Casual Nun
Resort For Dead Desires

As someone who was occasionally taught by nuns, I can confirm they are anything but casual. Noise rockers Casual Nun hail from London but their origins lie in Greece, for three of them, and California for the other one. Resort For Dead Desires sees them mixing psychedelics and speed, it would seem, in the form of both music and recreational drugs. On Hominid Sounds.

Inner Song is the long-awaited second album from Welsh musician Kelly Lee Owens, three years on from her excellent self-titled debut that made her one of the most acclaimed newcomers in electronica for years. Thomas Köner
Motus

Not seen the name Mille Plateaux bandied about much of late (or am I not paying enough attention?). The latest album from Thomas Koner appears on the legendary imprint and as you may suspect is a collection of splintered and near undanceable electronic music. Koner experiments in producing music free of rhythm and timing and wonders aloud whether anyone could ever dance to this.
