Anna Meredith

One of the most eagerly awaited follow-ups in recent memory for alternative music, composer Anna Meredith announces her sophomore studio album FIBS. Doing what all great artists should and taking a different tack, the widescreen maximalism and energetic rhythms make it stand apart from 2016’s reputation-making Varmints.

Luís Fernandes

Normally accustomed to working with acoustic musicians like the wonderful Joana Gama, and on a series of film scores, Portuguese composer and musician Luís Fernandes, breaks into a solo career with a mysterious new album titled Demora, recorded in a series of live, improvised takes with a modular synthesiser.

Luie Luie

Previously only a rare collector’s item after a very limited run was pressed back in 1974, leading to a flood of bootlegged versions, Touchy, a collection of diverse instrumentals influenced by jazz, Latin and funk music and recorded by an outsider instrumentalist known as Luie Luie, at last gets a wider re-issue.

Hillbillies In Hell: Volume 9

Hillbillies in Hell Vol.9 gathers together some incredibly rare or just plain forgotten about singles by well-known country artists such as Ernest Tubb, Jim Reeves, Porter Wagoner and The Louvin Brothers. Maybe worth investing in just to hear what 'Please Don’t Go Topless, Mother' by Troy Hess sounds like.

My Resignation

Aussie duo Geowulf return with their second LP. My Resignation is a set of rose-tinted alternative pop/rock tracks that often come with an electronic tang. The likes of lead single ‘I See Red’ combine the wistfulness of Saint Etienne with the sort of bold choruses that PJ Harvey was dealing around the time of Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea.

A-Sun Amissa
For Burdened and Bright Light

Richard Knox’s A-Sun Amissa drop their fifth LP through a mixture of Consouling Sounds and Manchester drone merchants Gizeh. For Burdened And Bright Light is a mournful and monolithic LP that combines that weight of Sunn O))) with the Gothic majesty of Prurient. The end result is like a more sonorous version of fellow Gizeh act Several Wives.

No Hot Ashes
Hardship Starship

Having bagged support slots from the likes of Spring King, Blossoms and The Amazons over the last few years, as well as patronage from BBC Radio 6Music, Hardship Starship is the debut full-length album from No Hot Ashes. They’ve decided to drop their string of pre-existing singles in making the tracklist, and let these 11 tracks sink or swim on their own merit.

Ali Farka Touré

Legendary Malian musician and singer Ali Farka Touré is one of the African continent’s proudest proudest cultural exports, scooping three Grammys. Savane was originally released in July 2006, four months after his death at the age of 66, and stands as his final work. 13 years later, it receives its first-ever vinyl release.

Chorus Grant
Vernacular Music

Copenhagen-based singer-songwriter Chorus Grant presents his third full-length album Vernacular Music. Melding regular instruments, most prominently the classical guitar, with newer elements such as recorders, violins and saxes, this new effort was created in league with Polar Bear’s Seb Rochford among other collaborators.

Giant Sand
Recounting The Ballads Of Thin Line Men

It seems alt. Country trailblazers, Giant Sand, returning to their early albums and re-recording them with the addition of some new ideas is becoming a thing. In 2018 they released Returns To The Valley of Rain, which saw them having another stab at their debut album Valley of Rain. Now they are doing the same with Recounting The Ballads of Thin Line Men - a new version of their 1986 sophomore effort, The Ballad of a Thin Line Man.

Alessandro Cortini
Volume Massimo

Alessandro Cortini is best known as a key member of Nine Inch Nails, but he is also an active figure in the synthesiser scene. If you want to hear what all those tasty Instagram modular gear videos can do when applied to real composition, check out Volume Massimo, Cortini’s new solo electronic album. Stacks of sonics to enjoy here. Of course, Cortini has previously released a couple of awesome loner synth records for Prurient's Hospital Productions label as well as the heartwrenching, gorgeous Forse trilogy on Important Records. Lest we forget that filthy stonker on Bunker as Slumberman, plus his Sonoio output on Dais, a collaboration with mighty Japanese noise lord Merzbow among many other works.

Four Tet
Morning / Evening

On 12” vinyl or CD on Text. In perfect indemnible style, Four Tet releases his new album on his own imprint shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Only info in this is via his bareboned tweets, giving us the front cover and the fact that there are only two songs, each around 20 minute mark in length, one entitled Morning Side, the other (shockingly) Evening Side. I’ve already bought it, my friends have already bought it, and so should YOU!?!

David Axelrod
Seriously Deep

Seriously Deep was the only album David Axelrod recorded for Polydor in the 1970s. You may be less familiar with this than his other classics such as Songs Of Innocence, Songs of Experience and Earth Rot. However, this Jazz-rock fusion masterpiece has been plundered for samples just as often as the rest by the likes of Mobb Deep, Black Eyed Peas and Beanie Sigel.

Thomas Newman
Tolkien (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

The soundtrack to the divisive biopic JRR Tolkien biopic,  which features Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins and which told the story of the early life of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ author. Thomas Newman’s tender and evocative soundtrack was certainly the best thing about the film. You know Tolkien lived and worked in Leeds for a bit? Local knowledge!

Majeure, eg one half of Zombi, lays out his sweet sweet analogue synthesizers again for another solo slab of sonic adventure. Moon Duo
Stars Are The Light

Moon Duo (I preferred them when they were a trio) go disco! One of the steadiest and most reliable bands in psych rock have discovered a new muse. As well as being influenced musically, they've also found inspiration in the liberatory qualities of the dancefloor. Produced by Mr. Sonic Boom so it's no less psychedelic than their past output.

The Rimarimba Collection

Brilliant RVNG Intl. sub label Freedom To Spend has very handily collected four of Rimarimba's 80s output as The Rimarimba Collection. The music here is like a cross between minimalism and American Primitivism; guitars are thoughtfully plucked, glockenspiel melodies are looped, and weird field recordings are distorted. The whole thing has an addictive playfulness to it, making it the musical equivalent of a page-turner.

Kefaya + Elaha Soroor
Songs Of Our Mothers

Elaha Soroo is an Afghan singer and activist who arrived in London as a political refugee. There she connected with Kefaya, a musical collective and together they made Songs Of Our Mothers. An astonishing album that takes traditional Afghan women's folk songs and fills them out with thrilling, psychedelic arrangements.

Emel Mathlouthi
Everywhere We Looked Was Burning

Partisan Records displays its impressively diverse artist roster with the latest album by Tunisian-born New Yorker Emel Mathlouthi. Singing largely in English for the first time, Everywhere We Looked Was Burning is politically and ecologically charged, but is no less tuneful than her previous works.

Danish producer Anders Trentemøller returns after three years to deliver his fifth studio record. Dabbling in the fertile ground between indie and electronica since he first emerged back in 2006, Obverse sees him force himself out of his comfort zone and compose with little regard as to how to replicate the songs live.

So Removed

WIVES are another one of them there post-punk bands from New York City. However, on debut LP So Removed they distance themselves from the art-school Ramones-isms of fellow Big Applers like Parquet Courts and Bodega. Tracks like ‘The 20 Teens’ and ‘Workin’’ showcase a scuzzier, more low-slung sound influenced by Sonic Youth and The Pixies and maybe also a little bit by the Men.

The Sherlocks
Under Your Sky

The Sherlocks celebrate their contribution to the 100 years of Leeds United show with their second album, Under Your Sky. Rather than doubling down on the thrashy sound that so defined their debut, the band have opted for a cleaner one, occasionally using keyboards in place of guitars. Hopefully none of their fans will feel betrayed.

The Mekons
The Quality Of Mercy Is Not Strnen

Leeds art punk band, The Mekons, released their debut album, The Quality Of Mercy is not Strnen, in 1979. It was originally released on Virgin, but despite the major label backing, they had to borrow the gear needed to record it from fellow Leeds band, Gang Of Four. When you get this album home and look at the back cover, that is, in fact, a picture of Gang Of Four and not The Mekons. Those crazy cats!

Merdh Laleh
Water For Your Eyes

Water For Your Eyes is a record of fragile beauty from ambient composer/sound artist Merdh Laleh (Valdemar Kragelund). The project’s debut LP, Water For Your Eyes sees the kind of beatific ambiences we tend to associate with Brian Eno being subsumed by the hissing fauna of Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement or crackling distortion of bvdub. In the end this thing is not dissimilar to Fennesz. Lovely album.

The Chemical Brothers
Surrender (20th Anniversary Expanded Edition)

Surrender is the third album by The Chemical Brothers and was originally released in 1999. It includes the singles Hey Boy, Hey Girl and Let Forever Be. The latter famously samples The Beatles track Tomorrow Never Knows and features vocals from Noel Gallagher. The star-studded album also features guest performances from Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star), Jonathan Donahue (Mercury Rev) and Bernard Sumner (New Order). This 20th Anniversary expanded edition includes a load of remixes and a DVD of their Glastonbury set from 2000.

Uon is a new moniker from Ryan Fall AKA Caveman LSD/DJ Paradise. Bringing his debut EP Zlo to Motion Ward Uon retains the submerged glacial electronic soundscapes and environment but with an almost psychedelic and dub-like edge. Think Fennesz but with a bit more glitchy percussion darting around your head.

Hiss Golden Messenger
Terms Of Surrender

MC Taylor returns with his latest Hiss Golden Messenger album, and his fifth in just under four years, Terms of Surrender. A rumination on upheaval and loss that Taylor has experienced over the last 12 months, his new effort includes old collaborators and new ones, including Jenny Lewis and The National’s Aaron Dessner.

Out Of Love

Philadelphia’s Rosali writes and plays songs that seem to emerge from some other place: both her voice and her guitars carry a slightly otherworldly sense of psychedelia. Out Of Love is her impressive debut full-length, released by the legendary Siltbreeze imprint: they know a thing or two about special strange music.

Cause and Effect

After Roy Keane and perhaps Robbie Keane, post-Coldplay soft-rockers Keane are the third-most-famous of the Keane-clan. We imagine a hewn-from-granite hardman like Roy is positively revolted by the fact that he shares a name with this bunch of Snow Patrolers, but maybe he’s got used to them by now. Or maybe he simply gives them not a second's thought. Anyway, on Cause And Effect - the band’s fifth LP and first for seven years - we find them up to their usual tricks. Expect to hear lead single ‘The Way I Feel’ during TV coverage of football tournaments for the next few years.

Cold Showers
Love and Regret

Los Angeles-based shoegaze/punk merchants Cold Showers deliver a re-pressing of their 2012 debut album Love and Regret, coming in tandem with the release of their third studio effort Motionless in 2019. Infused with melodies alongside their angular soundscapes, it’s an appropriate time to revisit an influential debut.

Tamu Massif
Little Death Summer

Tamu Massif turns in his debut full-length, the product of many deep insular creative sessions. Little Death Summer finds Tamu drawing in snatches of sounds from around him as he goes through daily life, with street chat and ambiguous soundscapes worked into a pleasant sound-bed for Tamu’s chilled-out beats and vocals. On Chiverin.

Charles Mingus
Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus

Despite being named Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus, a title that perhaps suggests a solo, Mingus-only effort, this 1964 record actually captures Charles Mingus’ experimentation with a large, 11 piece group, performing some of his finest tunes, including ‘Better Get Hit In Yo’ Soul’. Vinyl reissue on the Jeanne Dielman label.

Archie Shepp
Fire Music

Vintage free-jazz from Archie Shepp and group, landing in the middle of heady times when it was initially released in 1965. The aptly titled Fire Music was Shepp’s second album on Impulse! and notably includes a track dedicated to Malcom X and a version of a Duke Ellington number. Reissued by Impulse! themselves.

Girl Band
The Talkies

Joe Thwaites & Jim Fowler
Blood & Truth: Original Game Soundtrack

Blood & Truth is a virtual reality PS4 shooter game set in a gangster-crimey London. Rather pleasingly, the original soundtrack, put together by Joe Thwaites & Jim Fowler, avoids the lock-stock-cockney-rock approach altogether, for the more contemporary approach of, well,  orchestral grime, featuring spots from JME and Kamakaze alongside a 90-piece orchestra. Vinyl release from Black Screen.

Nite Lite

Landcestors is the work of Nite Lite, who individually go by Myste and Phil French. The record sees the pair artfully shaping and placing field recordings. All the sounds here are familiar, but also completely unrecognisable. The recordings all oscillate together as if they have become one single organic being.

Hot Motion

Incredibly 60s looking band in continue to make 60s influenced music shocker. Temples have been around for a good few years and with Hot Motion look set to make the so called 'big time'. The band they bring to mind is Kasabian but like, not in a bad way. Sunshine streams between the chords. On ATO Records.

Roxy Girls
A Poverty Attention

Sunderland-based newcomers Roxy Girls continue to build up a head of steam with their first mini-album, A Poverty of Attention. Recorded with Field Music’s Peter Brewis and released on the fine Moshi Moshi label, it’s seven tracks of discordant, angular post-punk that wants to save you from real life. Inspired by the likes of XTC and Wire.

Oscar Scheller

Once touted as the saviour of British pop in some quarters, songwriter-for-hire and producer Oscar Scheller returns with his sophomore album HTTP404. Boasting collaborations with Lily Allen, Ashnikko and Sarah Midori Perri of Kero Kero Bonito, it promises a more reflective take on the exuberance of his debut Cut & Paste.

Steve Lacy
Apollo XXI

Here we have the long-awaited debut LP from The Internet’s Steve Lacy. Though Apollo XXI is Lacy’s first solo full-length, we doubt this precocious young chap was feeling the pressure too much - when you’ve made beats for Kendrick Lamar, given a TED Talk and walked the runway at Paris Fashion week before turning 20 you probably don’t even know what pressure is. Lacy’s carefree approach translates into this gorgeous neo-soul set. Dropping just as the weather heats up, Apollo XXI is a perfect summer jam collection.

Grant Green
Grant’s First Stand

Though Grant’s First Stand isn’t technically the first set Grant Green taped for Blue Note - that honour goes to the recordings collected as 2001’s First Session - it was definitely the first LP that the famed jazz guitarist released through the label. On this record Green’s unusual trio (drums, organ and guitar) front their own take on the contemporaneous sounds of hard bop and balladry. The result is an album that still surprises and thrills all these years later.

Johnny Griffin

Blue Note reissue the classic debut LP from late saxophonist Johnny Griffin. 1956’s Introducing Johnny Griffin kick-started one of the longest and most distinguished careers in jazz, but even well over a half a century later this record still ranks among the ‘Little Giant’s finest. Introducing’s opening track ‘Mil Dew’ is one of the essential hard bop texts.

Freddie Hubbard
Open Sesame

This new edition of Freddie Hubbard’s famous 1960 debut LP fronts up the original in its full glory. Even all these years later Open Sesame remains a exercise in bespoke cool from the famous trumpeter/flugelhorn player. Along with a band that featured Tina Brooks (tenor sax), McCoy Tyner (piano), Sam Jones (bass) and Clifford Jarvis (drums), Hubbard swings through a set of originals and covers here with effortless grace. Blue Note’s latest pressing of Open Sesame features liner notes penned by the late Ira Gitler.

Fool If / Wounds (Jay Glass Dubs & SKRS Remixes)

Bristol trio Jabu’s aching vocals, sparse layering and ripping good production really worked wonders on 2017’s Sleep Heavy. Standout ‘Wounds’ is alt-RnB at its most concise and beautiful. In the hands of Athenian dub disassembler Jay Glass Dubs and shaggy dancehall dub disruptors SKRS (a.k.a. Seekers International), ‘Fool If’ and ‘Wounds’ are given gritty, cityscape makeovers.

Dusk Loom

Having enjoyed a prodigious output of an album at least every 12 months from 2011 to 2016, The Dusk Loom has taken Oliver Barrett a comparatively lengthy three years to put together, having stepped back from his Petrels project briefly. Finding inspiration ancient and modern mythology, otherworldliness is the key theme on this seventh record.

Malekko Phase Mod

Performing under various aliases throughout his career, electronica artist Edward Upton’s latest DMX Krew release Malekko Phase Mod fits effortlessly into a line of work that goes back to the mid-Nineties. Mark Lanegan Band
Somebody's Knocking

Somebody’s Knocking is the eleventh solo album by ex-Screaming Trees frontman, Mark Lanegan. Lanegan says that Joy Division, The Stooges, Love and, perhaps surprisingly, New Order have all influenced this album. Despite having always been a fan of electronic music, the sounds are now making their way into his otherwise fags-and-whiskey-drenched gruff rock sound as it’s what he listens to most these days.

Bobby Blackbird
The Master Blenda

We very nearly didn’t get The Master Blenda, the first solo single from Equiknoxx mastermind Bobby Blackbird. Shortly after the tune's conception Blackbird was in a near-fatal car crash and spent months in hospital. He emerged more determined than ever to complete the track, one that turns away from Equiknoxx’s twisted dancehall style and heads towards a hotstepping ska sound. Turned out with a band that included several members of Raging Fyah, ‘The Master Blenda’ is a triumph in every sense of the word. Exile The Brave and Blackbird’s Equiknoxx buddy Time Cow dub it out on the B-side.

Shana Cleveland
Night Of The Worm Moon

Shana Cleveland is the voice of La Luz, but working solo for a change on this here Night Of The Worm Moon album allows her to travel further afield in terms of sound and content. This is an LA dreamer’s album, with UFO sightings and other night-moods represented with sun-tipped psychedelic singer-songwriter new-folk. Very West Coast, very good. On Hardly Art.

Scenes de la Bohème
Standing In The Rain

It’s a surprise that we’ve got Scenes De La Boheme’s Standing In The Rain at all. The solo project of one Anthony Waites, Scenes De La Boheme only released one hyper-limited 7” back in 1982. The two Talk Talk-ish art-rock tracks were never sent out to the NME or BBC or whatever, and the project lay dormant until the 7” started to circulate among collectors in the 2000’s. Now interest in Scenes De La Boheme has grown enough that Minimal Wave have issued Standing In The Rain, an LP that brings together the 1982 single with four unreleased cuts. This autumnal set is an outstanding example of golden-age synth-pop/coldwave.

Will Burns & Hannah Peel
Chalk Hill Blue

Musician Hannah Peel and poet Will Burns link up for the dreamy Chalk Hill Blue. Neither artist takes the lead here, sometimes Burns responds to Peel and sometimes Peel to Burns. The result is always captivating; Burns delivers his poems with authority and conviction, while Peel's music is as eccentric as usual.

Stine Janvin
Fake Synthetic Music

Norwegian composer and performer Stine Janvin enters PAN’s labyrinth with new album Fake Synthetic Music. Mainly for voice and delay, the album tests what can be done with such a limited (conceptually, at least) source of sound. Very exciting, and not to be brushed off as similar to Norwegian voice performer Maja Ratkje; the two get distinct results from their processes.

Off The Leash

Texas born, now based in Berlin producer Textasy drops his debut release after being featured on compilations from Art-Aud and Texas Recordings Underground. The Fall
Hex Enduction Hour

Arguably the single greatest album in The Fall’s 41 year history, 1982’s Hex Enduction Hour documents Mark E. Smith at the peak of his powers, fronting the most powerful lineup of the band. Steve Hanley’s bass is generally to the fore, flanked by guitarists Craig Scanlon and Marc Riley, and crucially featuring the twin drums of Paul Hanley and Karl Burns. At this point MES had a knack for combining kitchen-sink realism with the uncanny and supernatural, refracted through a Burroughs-esque prism. Recorded in a draughty cinema in Hitchin and a cave in Reykjavík, the album is bombastic, abstract, abrasive, hilarious, belligerent and utterly exhilarating. The original crammed an hour of music onto a single LP, but this remastered Superior Viaduct reissue achieves much better sound quality than letting it sprawl over a double. If you’re looking for a way in to a potentially bewildering discography, start here!
