Seth Nehil
Skew / Flume

Released through Opal Tapes’ lesser-spotted sub-label V A N I L L A, Skew/Flume collects two EPs released by sound artist Seth Nehil - the former in 2015, the latter two years later. Skew’s entries are shape-shifting bits of electroacoustic composition that render the dark portent of Prurient with the sound palette of Holly Herndon. Flume’s tracks are longer and more droning, edging at times on Muslimgauze or Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement.

Contagious
Contagious

Dense, brooding music from Berlin’s Contagious here. The trio’s eponymous debut LP contains abrasive drones smothered by industrial textures and broiling electronics that seem ready to unleash hell at any moment. The likes of Einstürzende Neubauten and Throbbing Gristle haunt Contagious’ fevered, trance-inducing sound.

MA
AMA

Not Mama in the words of Phil Collins and pals but MA 'AMA'. Just buy it from us because googling it could be a nightmare. MA comes from Tokyo and started out with (relatively) straightforward beats and hip-hop before turning increasingly noisy and experimental. On this album MA places cut up vocals and field recordings of his voice over unusual futuristic music. Could be interesting.

Stefan Fraunberger
Quellgeister#3

Performed almost entirely on the organ of an abandoned Saxon church in the Romanian village of Bussd, Quellgeister#3 is the third in an ongoing series of works from Austrian composer Stefan Fraunberger. Like his previous music, it’s an abstract rumination on concepts of shared collective cultural memory.

Upperground Orchestra
Euganea

A self-styled ‘cosmic jazz’ collective founded in Italy around the turn of the millennium by Lebanese artist Rabih Beaini, Upperground Orchestra have been silent for over a decade since the release of their last album in 2008. It’ll be fascinated to hear how Euganea, scheduled for the end of 2019, sounds given that protracted absence.

Andre Ethier
Croak In The Weeds

The second in another planned trilogy of three solo albums from former Deadly Snakes frontman André Ethier, Croak In The Weeds could succeed where the Canadian’s other projects previously seized up. Following 2017’s Under Grape Leaves and produced with Sandro Perri, the new collection ought to be another indie-folk triumph.

LCSM (Likwid Continual Space Motion)
EP1

Recording under a brand new nom-de-plume as Likwid Continual Space Motion, British producer IG Culture embarks on a new project titled Earthbound, set for release later in 2019 and partly captured on EP1. The music here takes IG’s jazz leanings and blasts them in to outer space, with the help of London artistic collective Steam Down.

Like A Villain
What Makes Vulnerability Good

Like A Villain is New York composer Holland Andrews who makes challenging, visceral work which plays with the limits of her evocative vocal abilities. Her influences include opera and musical theatre which she blends with smudgy ambience and electronica with flourishes of jazz and noise. The result is a raw and fascinating work which sits somewhere in the same ball park of the similarly boundary pushing singers Scott Walker and Diamanda Galas.

Ebo Taylor Jnr with Wuta Wazutu
Gotta Take It Cool

Yes, Ebo Taylor Jnr. is indeed the son of the legendary Ghanaian bandleader/guitarist/singer Ebo Taylor. Seems like talent runs in the family - the 1978 LP Gotta Take It Cool finds Junior team up with Wuta Wazutu for a set of highlife and Afrobeat tunes that would make his father proud. Original copies of Gotta Take It Cool are extremely difficult to track down these days, so it’s a good thing Mr. Bongo have got this reissue together.

Skinny Puppy
VIVI Sect VI

VIVI Sect VI (Vivisect Six) was the fourth album by Canadian electro-industrial band Skinny Puppy. At the time, 1988, it was the band’s most refined sounding album. It was regarded as their best album by many critics. Lyrically it dealt with animal rights, chemical warfare and environmental issues.

Skinny Puppy
Rabies

Rabies was an oddball record in the storied history of Skinny Puppy in that it featured Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen on several tracks and so the record had more the feel of a Ministry record than a Skinny Puppy one. Still, this is an experimental work on which the band mixed their industrial rock background with with an ahead-of-their-time use of sampling. Back out on vinyl courtesy of Nettwerk records.

Moor Mother
Analog Fluids of Sonic Black Holes

Moor Mother is Philadelphia musician and poet Camae Ayewa who has previously collaborated with The Bug and Justin Broadrick (Godflesh etc). This should give you some idea of where she's coming from with this her third album under the Moor Mother moniker. She uses elements of free jazz, noise, rap, reggae and industrial music to create freeform splurges and matches them with explosive subject matter on subjects such as police brutality and enslavement. Another dark missive from the undergrowth from one of today's most thought provoking artists.

Marvin Gaye
What’s Going On Live

What's Going On was Marvin Gaye's legendary politically aware 1971 opus but have you ever heard it performed live? This recording was made on Marvin Gaye Day in Washington DC in 1972 but was only released once as a bonus disc on the 2001 CD release of it's parent album. Now you can enjoy the soul superstar swooning through the album plus a medley of his 1960s hits on vinyl newly mixed and mastered for your ear entertainment.

The Dukes of Stratosphear
Psurroundabout Ride

The Dukes of Stratosphear were the alter ego of XTC in the mid '80s a time when psychedelic music was seemingly confined to the dustbin of history despite slowly emerging scenes in then UK and the US. The band adopted pseudonyms in order to make music more obviously in thrall to the 60s psychedelic experiences they'd had as youths and strangely enough the Dukes started to sell more records than its parent band. Indeed producer John Leckie was chosen by the Stone Roses after they'd heard his work on 25 O’Clock and Psonic Psunspot the two albums collected here. Both have been remastered and on the blu-ray you also get complete demos and instrumental versions.

She Drew The Gun
Trouble Every Day

Following a series of memorable festival appearances this summer, Liverpudlian psych-rock quartet She Drew The Gun release a new four-track EP, led by a re-tooled and updated cover of Frank Zappa’s ‘Trouble Every Day’ with lyrics to reflect the unrest of 2019. Also included are two new original tracks and a remix of Revolution Of Mind’s opening track ‘Resister’ by Slackers.

Pink Floyd
The Later Years 1987 -2019

An incredible 18 set collection that is to include five CDs, six Blu-rays and five DVDs containing remixed albums, previously unreleased audio, concert films, never-before-seen footage and so much more. A beautiful addition if you own the early years boxset that will make your Pink Floyd collection even better.

Blockhead
Bubble Bath

New music from American hip-hop production legend Blockhead, presented over two slabs of wax. Although it sticks to his instrumental hip-hop oeuvre, just like his classic records for Ninja Tune over the years, Bubble Bath focuses on texture and flow rather than just beats, evoking dead-of-night ambience and the night-time economy.

Sunn O)))
Pyroclasts

We will look back at 2019 as the year in which Sunn O))) released as many album as they played chords. 'Pyroclasts' follows 'Life Metal' and is pitched as the earlier record's "shadow album". Presumably this means it will not stop until it has destroyed that which casts it. A bit like Dark Link in Zelda. Heavy and slow, you know the drill.

Cry

Promising more blissful, narcoleptic dream-pop after the success of his early singles, Greg Gonzalez delivers his second Cigarettes After Sex album, Cry. Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man
Out Of Season

For those of you hungry for more Portishead content I have some good news. In 2002 Beth Gibbons connected with Talk Talk's Paul Webb (here using the name Rustin Man) to produce 'Out Of Season'. It's a record that's much more indebted to folk and jazz than the trip hop Gibbons is known for, and alongside her recording of Górecki's 'Symphony No. 3', proves she's one of the most versatile vocalists alive.

Dancefloor Detonators Vol. 1

For God's sake don't detonate the dancefloor! These four tracks are the most popular tunes on Invisible's series of digital bangers and feature Krokakai, Vitorijoski, The Mamba and Cantillate tearing up discotheques with high octane techno thumpers. Andrew Weatherall has been playing them as have a host of other name DJs. Finally vinyl-ready for you to spin at home or out on the floors it comes with a "100% guaranteed dancefloor satisfaction" seal of approval.

Mammane Sani et Son Orgue
La Musique Électronique du Niger

The wonderful and excellent Sahel Sounds reissue La Musique Électronique du Niger, a 1981 set from Nigerien artist Mammane Sani. These tracks, laid down in a quickfire session on Niger National Radio’s rickety old organ, have become a crucial part in the country’s musical story by the broadcaster subsequently using them as theme music for their shows. Now remastered from the original tapes, these droning compositions make a lot of sense alongside Sahel Sounds’ recent Hama album.

Amy Studt
Happiest Girl In The Universe

Title possibly ironic on an album by a singer-songwriter whose career perhaps mirrors Scott Walker in that Amy Studt had two tries at being a bona fide pop star in the early 2000's before retreating to a rural cottage to plot her next move. She returned from exile with darker and more tortured songs of which Happiest Girl In the Universe is the latest batch. Here she ruminates bleakly on her life journey on an album of equal parts failure and redemption all the while accompanying herself on an assortment of instruments all topped off with her exceptional voice and arrangement talents. Sometimes it's the tortoise that wins the race.

Deathprod
Occulting Disk

First new Deathprod album in 15 years as Oslo's Helge Sten re-constitutes the project that has already produced some of the most immersive ambient music of our times. His previous output has always been raw and powerful politically aware ambient music which has drawn comparisons to GAS, Swans and Tim Hecker. A much needed comeback to soundtrack these turbulent times. Liner notes by unlikely fan Will Oldham who reveals he listens to Deathprod with his mum.

Ziúr
ATØ

One of the great products of the Berlin club scene over the last few years, Ziúr follows up her 2017 debut album U Feel Anything? with sophomore effort ATØ. This time around, she’s operating with a much larger arsenal of sounds and influences, and dedicates the new record to “all survivors, outcasts and weirdos”.

We Are Scientists
With Love and Squalor

Back by popular demand is the 2006 breakthrough album by Californian indie-poppers We Are Scientists. Cheekily dubbed a ‘50th anniversary re-issue’ by Chris and Keith, poking fun at the sloth-like pace it takes to do anything in the music industry, it’s the first time that With Love And Squalor has been re-issued since the original pressing ran out all those years ago. Houses the hit singles ‘Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt’, ‘It’s A Hit’ and ‘The Great Escape’.

Brötzmann / Schlippenbach / Bennink
Fifty Years After... Live at the Lila Eule, Bremen 26.05.2018

Fifty Years After... Live at the Lila Eule, Bremen 26.05.2018 by Brötzmann/ Schlippenbach / Bennink is a live celebration of Peter Brötzmann’s 1968 album, Machine Gun. The free jazz saxophonist assembled a trio of  Alexander von Schlippenbach on piano and Han Bennink (who played on the original album) on drums to play the album live. It went so well they decided to release it, and here it is.

Tahiti 80
Fear Of An Acoustic Planet

20 years ago, French guitar pop band, Tahiti 80 released their first album, Puzzle. To celebrate this landmark, they have recorded, Fear Of An Acoustic Planet, an album featuring acoustic versions of tracks from throughout their career. The band were always a pleasant listen, and certainly know how to write a melody. This acoustic album makes those sweet songs a little sweeter, and perhaps we need a bit of that right now.

Masahiro Sugaya
Horizon Volume 1

Masahiro Sugaya is barely known outside of his native Japan but Empire of Signs want to change all that with this introduction into his works. He has straddled the worlds of acoustic and experimental composition, jazz and future thinking computerised sounds in a long career which began in the 1980s. This remastered collection is a good place to start for newbies to his music and will appeal to fans of Hiroshi Yoshimura and the Lights In The Attic compilation Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980-1990 on which Sugaya appeared.

Zann
Strange Ways / Inside Jungle

Zann feature Udo Winkler, a former member of post punk band Konec. He became interested in the music of Brian Eno, David Byrne, Jon Hassell, David Sylvian, German bands such as Embryo and Dissidenten along with middle & far eastern music. This all lead to the recording in 1988 of Strange Ways/Inside Jungle, an experimental album of ambient, jazz, synth and folk but with middle eastern instrumentation at its heart.  Originally released in 1990 as a private pressing, reissued and remastered from the original tapes.

If you can't afford the 3LP set we are selling elsewhere on this wonderful site then for £9.99 cheaper you can get a truncated version of Ramin Djawadi's soundtrack from the eighth and worst series of HBO's poorly-lit sword drama. This is a single length version, with tracks selected by we're not sure who but it results in a nice bite-sized version containing all your eighth series favourite tunes.

Oranssi Pazuzu
Live at Roadburn

Oranssi Pazazu are a Finnish psychedelic black metal band, not that they necessarily want to get bogged down in all that genre stuff. They are just the kind of band to go down a storm at the Roadburn festival which is what they did in 2016 and 2017. Live At Roadburn will help you experience their blistering and innovative experimentalism in the comfort of your own home. Essential fact: Their keyboard player is called Evil.

Brainstory
Buck

Brainstory are a band from Rialto, California. Their journey from there to their current home of LA saw them initially feeding on punk rock and skateboarding. An eagerness to expand their musical horizons led them to the local jazz scene before their move to LA and a hook up with Eduardo Arenas from Chicano Batman. Buck is a fusion of rock, funk and soul that shows the distance they’ve travelled creatively.

The Clash
London Calling (40th Anniversary)

Wow. Forty years since the Clash unleashed their third album London Calling. Iconic not just because of the more varied music contained within and it's legendary title track but just look at that sleeve will you? They haven't gone completely to town with this just a relatively standard LP (admittedly in special sleeve) and CD reissue plus a CD box set they've called London Calling: The Scrapbook which contains a hardback book full of memorabilia, archive material and lyrics.

The Necks
Mindset

Releasing sixteen albums is an achievement in itself. What’s impressive about Mindset, the latest soiree into improvised musical from those wonderful Australians The Necks, is that it shows that the band are still looking to expand their sound more than 25 years after they kicked things off. The two lengthy piano-bass-drum swells that each make up a side of Mindset draw from Sun Ra, Chick Corea, Alice Coltrane and so much more without ever sounding much like any of them.

Dallas Acid
The Spiral Arm

The Spiral Arm is the first album for All Saint Records by synth-orientated dream-pop group Dallas Acid, and their third album proper overall in the last decade. The trio’s career has also seen them do soundtrack work, and collaborate last year with Laraaji, and that fondness for and experience in creating cinematic soundscapes is detectable here.

COMA
Voyage Voyage

Presumably titled after Desireless's 1986 smash, this is the German COMA not to Polish rock band of the same name. They make emotional electronica and dreamy soundscapes using an array of instruments both real and computerised and add in vocals to give you the melancholic Germanic pop thrills you require. Another safe space where analogue can meet digital without a fist fight ensuing.

Dog In The Snow
Vanishing Lands

Even men with steel hearts love to see a dog in the snow. We all do, presumably so does Brighton based artist Helen Ganya Brown who has created this dreamy debut from her home studio and subsequently presumably rejoiced when told it was going to be released by Bella Union. It's a haunting collection of electronica, dream pop and arty rock music that was made when she says she was having some very strange dreams. Possibly ones involving dogs and snow. Clear vinyl if you are quick.

Lindstrom
On a Clear Day I Can See Forever

Lindstrøm presents his sixth solo studio album On A Clear Day I Can See Forever. Based around long, one-take recordings and inspired by the material he wrote for a special performance last winter at Norway’s Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, the new record has essentially seen him debunk his old ways of creating music, using physical instruments and not computer technology.

Monster Rally
Adventures on the Floating Island

If you've heard a Monster Rally album before the you'll know that their music is a form of escapism that takes you far away from the ring roads and office blocks into a kind of Hawaiian paradise. Ted Feighan takes samples and loops from old exotica albums and distills them into a vaguely hip-hop narrative which sounds something like a lazy day at the beach with J. Dilla. Lovely stuff as always.

Exek
Some Beautiful Species Left

Broadly taking a post-punk template for their music, but infusing it with elements of dub, classical music and krautrock, Melbourne band EXEK return with their third studio record Some Beautiful Species Left. Thematically concerning the human-driven degradation of nature, it was specifically composed in the studio, during the recording process itself.

Will Johnson
Wire Mountain

Will Johnson was once known as Centro-Matic but is now on his sixth album under his own name. He's kind of like a Southern fried Robert Pollard both in delivery and reliability but Johnson is happy to move out of his comfort zone, Wire Mountain adds in a wealth of new textures to his lo-fi rocking sound and features a guest appearance from Thor Harris (Swans and Thor & Friends).

Roy Montgomery, Emma Johnston
After Nietzsche

New Zealand-based artists Roy Montgomery and Emma Johnston get together once more for another collaborative album. Unlike last year’s Suffuse, however, the veteran Montgomery is writing specifically for his partner’s voice rather than for a series of guest vocalists, and the result is quite a different sounding beast.

Led Bib
It’s Morning

It’s Morning is the ninth studio album from British ensemble Led Bib, former Mercury Prize nominees and basically uncategorisable for the entirety of their 15-year career. The most obvious change this time around is that the music now boasts two vocalists - Wang Chung’s Jack Hues being one of them! - but the core ethos of the group remains.

Robbie Basho
Visions of the Country

In 1978 Robbie Basho released the legendary Visions of the Country. Coming relatively late in a career which saw him, alongside John Fahey, develop the 'American Primitive' guitar tradition, Visions of the Country is a remarkable album filled with spirit, emotion, and ruggedness. The guitar playing is raw and intense, and his singing is just breathtaking. A marvel.

PCM
Attraverso

PCM are a new ambient trio consisting of Francesco Perra, Matteo Cantaluppi and Matteo Miliea. All have previous form in ambient music and sound design but here collaborate on an album on which they try to blend drone music, haunting shards of guitar and kosmische synth. Interesting to see an ambient group, well versed as we are at seeing ambient music made by one solitary composer. Should be an interesting mix.

The Cosmic Dead
Scottish Space Race

Glasgow heavyweights the Cosmic Dead return with four more slabs of supersized psychedelic jam. Their churning, monolithic sound has been recorded live at their Glasgow hideaway by long term collaborator Luigi Pasquini and features lap steel synth (what?) from Andrew Gray (Girl Sweat). Sure as always to knock your socks clean off...and isn't that image on the cover art similar geographically to Lana Del Rey's understanding of the Scottish border?

Pharoah Sanders
Moon Child

It’s been 30 years since Pharaoh Sanders (no relation of Bernie) released Moon Child, and the record has been difficult to get hold of on vinyl for approximately 29 of those years. Fortunate, then, that Tidal Waves Music have got together a new pressing of this LP. Moon Child finds the saxophonist toning down the trailblazing spiritual jazz style that he’s best known for, instead opting for some more traditional but no less lovely improvisations. His versions of Horace Silver’s ‘Moon Rays’ and George & Ira Gershwin’s ‘Soon’ are particularly smooth.

Pharoah Sanders & Idris Muhammad
Africa

A 1987 gem of an album by the great Pharoah Sanders. Africa features the Sanders saxophone alongside Curtis Lundy, John Hicks and Idris Muhammad, bringing things down to a classic quartet situation. These recordings include a take on Coltrane’s ‘Naima’ and Sanders own classic ‘You’ve Got To Have Freedom’, among much else. High quality performances, reissued with bonus tracks by Tidal Waves Music.

Jim Sullivan
If The Evening Were Dawn

Light In The Attic continue their run of Jim Sullivan releases with If The Evening Were Dawn, a previously-unreleased set of tracks taped way back in 1969. Sullivan disappeared in 1975 and has not been found since, so his music will have to do the talking for him. And what music If The Evening Were Dawn is - Sullivan’s story gives these wistful countryfied folk songs even greater power than they would have on their own terms.

Jim Sullivan
Jim Sullivan

Jim Sullivan’s eponymous sophomore LP gets a reissue courtesy of Light In The Attic. Like its predecessor UFO this 1972 joint is a set of psychedelic Americana that coalesces around Sullivan’s charismatic, Nick Drake-esque tenor. Originally released on the short-lived Playboy imprint (yes, that Playboy) Jim Sullivan would be the last many heard from the singer - three years later Sullivan disappeared in New Mexico and has not been spotted since.

Crumb

Snazzy picture disc vinyl edition of the soundtrack to the 1994 documentary Crumb concerning legendary cartoonist Robert Crumb.  The soundtrack begins with the artist musing on music and life before featuring several jazz and ragtime styled pieces featuring David Boeddinghaus and Craig Ventresco. It wouldn't be complete without some of Crumb's beloved old time folk blues thrown in for good measure. Nice looking disc.

This Gothenburg trio aren't quite as deafening as the Prodigy but they are still quite an intense experience playing a form of monolithic riff rock that has drawn comparisons to Monolord and High on Fire. Expect billowing guitar riffs hammering away beneath the gravelly vocals of Mattias Nööjd on songs which crucially never lose the groove.

Michael Kiwanuka
KIWANUKA

Just to make absolutely sure that you know it’s him, Michael Kiwanuka has gone for his own (sur)name as the title of his third studio LP. KIWANUKA sees the singer tripping down a bit of a psychedelic soul route - tracks like ‘You Ain’t The Problem’ are shimmering What’s Going On-type things that coalesce around Kiwanuka’s poised, soulful singing. Dangermouse and Kiwanuka’s longtime ally Inflo are the producers.

Skunk Anansie
Post Orgasmic Chill

Seems strange to think it now, but there was a time when Skunk Anansie were legitimately one of the UK’s biggest rock bands. Their stock was never higher than in 1999, the year they headlined Glastonbury and released their third studio LP Post-Orgasmic Chill (sounds like fun, eh). The alt-rock and metal-tinged songs of this record give it a bit of a Placebo flavour. Still sounds good all these years on - probably why Post-Orgasmic Chill is being reissued by 100%.

Diagonal
Arc

Heady, artistic groove-rock from Diagonal here. The Brighton band’s first LP in seven years, Arc is full of tracks grounded by great work from the rhythm section that’s often pitched somewhere between motorik Krautrock and the psychedelic new-beat style of someone like Whilst. Atop this we get vocals reminiscent of Talk Talk’s Mark Hollis (RIP) and some ripping, vaguely proggy guitar play.

Babyshambles
Shotter's Nation

Shotter's Nation was the second album from never knowingly not wasted the Libertines co-frontman Pete 'Peter' Doherty under his Babyshambles moniker. It sees him collaborating with an unfathomably eclectic bunch of artists such as Kate Moss, Ian Brown and Bert Jansch and this is probably the only time you'll see those three in the same sentence. Not exactly the pinnacle of recorded music but at least he's alive I suppose.

Stiff Little Fingers
Inflammable Material

Stiff Little Fingers’ debut LP Inflammable Material turns forty this year. If punk isn’t dead, it’s certainly well into its midlife crisis. Back in the day there were few better than these Northern Irish legends when it came to sound and fury. Recorded to a backdrop of the Troubles and sectarian violence, Jake Burns and his band burn with a righteous anger from Inflammable Material’s first track to its last.

Stereophonics
Kind

Wayne Rooney will be pleased - Stereophonics are back! The band are just one away from a dozen studio LPs now, though despite laying down all that material over the years they really haven’t changed their sound much (obviously - it’s Stereophonics we’re dealing with here). Kind features songs called things like ‘Hungover For You’ and ‘Bust This Town’ so we’re going to assume it’s business as usual for everyone’s favourite Welsh stadium-rockers.

Behavior
Spirits & Embellishments

LA rockers Behavior come through with an LP of tight, passionate tunes in the form of Spirits & Embellishments. There are a few forces at play in the trio’s knotted guitar music - heart-on-sleeve post-hardcore, muscular noise-rock, the wide-eyed post-punk of early Ought and even the ghost of Don Caballero’s twiddlesome math-rock can all be found with balls in play on tracks like ‘The Thirsty Garden’. The vocals are delivered with urgency and angst.

Frode Haltli
Border Woods

Border Woods is the second record by Swedish accordion player and composer Frode Haltli. It contains folk inspired compositions balancing the old wheezebox itself with nyckelharpa which is a kind of keyed fiddle popular in Sweden. This latest album strips back the sound of the larger ensemble compositions of last years Avant Folk album to create a varied album of nordic jams and improvisation.

Rachael Dadd
FLUX

Though her surname is Dadd, Rachael Dadd plays nothing like dad-rock so anyone else other than me with that thought can get it right out of their heads. Instead she plays a kind of conceptual, contemporary folk music that has already lauded her plaudits across the globe. This her her first on Memphis Industries following on from work with a slew of different labels. Like most other records in 2019 it in inspired by and a protest to the recent political landscape.

Tempers
Private Life

Calm down everyone! Stop shouting at each other! Goodness me - Tempers, tempers. Despite having a name that implies vitriol, this NYC duo actually serve something closer to angst than anger on their latest LP Private Life. Entries such as ‘Capital Pains’ (geddit?) find singer Jasmine Golestaneh dealing with the mess of city living over urgent, widescreen synth-pop beats. The War On Drugs and Future Islands are close compadres of Private Life.

A.A.Williams
A.A.Williams

A.A. Williams is an intriguing sounding songwriter who straddles both the metal and folk genres in her dark and evocative sound. Indeed she has been compared to Moonpix era Cat Power yet is shortly off on tour with Sisters of Mercy. What gives? I'm not sure but this is a re-press of her long sold out debut EP with several new songs added including a slow moving take on Dolly Parton's Jolene.

Itasca
Spring

The fruits of geographical relocation are well-documented. Like Bowie and Iggy's move to Berlin, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Itasca found that the move to New Mexico yielded delicious fruits that eventually coalesced into the form of her new album 'Spring'. It's a testament to the revitalising powers of change and the profound impact that setting can have on the aesthetic sensibility.

Omni
Networker

Hang on. I was thinking that Omni only released a new album earlier this year when in reality Multi-Task came out in 2017. How time flies when you are enjoying yourself.  Networker is their third album and their first since signing for Sub Pop. Theirs is a taut and wiry sound with nods back to Gang of Four and fellow Georgians Pylon and they have an ex Deerhunter in guitar ace Frankie Broyles. Networker turns up the 'fi' on their twisty turny sound but retaining the catchiness and freshness of their earlier work.

Sean O'Hagan
Radum Calls, Radum Calls

The lead singer of The High Llamas and a regular member of Stereolab, Sean O’Hagan is one of these islands’ most formidable avant-pop musicians. But it’s been a whole 29 years between his two solo albums, with Radum Calls, Radum Calls appearing on Drag City. Full of intriguing collaborations and O’Hagan’s typically understated, sideways lyrics, it’s great to have him back!

Carl Stone
Himalaya

Working in the field of live electronic music since the Seventies, American composer Carl Stone has performed all around the world. Following up 2019’s Baroo in extremely short order, Himalaya is a huge double-album experience. All six tracks were conceived of in the last six years, and focus around Southeast Asian field recordings.

Carl Stone
Baroo

Working in the field of live electronic music since the Seventies, American composer Carl Stone has performed all around the world. With a set of compositions ranging from 2011 to just last year in origin, and written with the MAX programming language, Baroo is five brand new tracks released on Unseen Worlds.

Nils Frahm
All Encores

The incomparable Nils Frahm presents the third and final instalment in his Encores series of EPs in September, with all three of the compositions to be made available as an 80-minute album titled All Encores. Conceived of as “musical islands” off of the mainland of last year’s album All Melody, the third part is more percussive and electronic than the previous EPs that focussed on piano and ambience.

Susumu Yokota
Cloud Hidden

Five years after his passing, the Susumu Yokota legend is being dredged up with a first album of unreleased recordings by the Japanese master. Rothko's Mark Beazley found a DAT tape of early sketches and unreleased recordings Yokota had sent him. Lo Recordings honcho Jon Tye then did the decent thing and completed the recordings. Cue champagne all round and an unexpected addition to Yokota's esteemed back catalogue.

Buke and Gase
Riposte

The precocious duo Buke & Gase dropped their debut LP Riposte almost a decade ago now, so the time feels right for a reissue of the 2010 record. This pair emerged from the same New York scene that birthed Animal Collective and Dirty Projectors, and the influence of both groups can be felt on this record of zany, hyperactive and experimental indie-rock. tUnE-yArDs, Gang Gang Dance and Shellac are all bundled up in the Riposte sound as well.

Homeboy Sandman
Dusty

He's good. And so prolific. Too prolific perhaps as I can never keep up. New York rapper Homeboy Sandman is now up to his 9th solo album since 2007. Last years Humble Pi (with Edan) was a stunner but he's back solo again with Dusty. Expect intelligent, literate hip-hop in a myriad of styles. Aesop Rock on some production duty too as an added bonus.

Fetish
World Eater

Fetish are an off-shoot band comprising members from different eras of Poison Idea - that is, Steve “Thee Slayer Hippy” Hanford and Eric “Vegetable” Olson, plus latter-day guitarist Brandon Bentley - plus three members of Portland punk act Long Knife. World Eater follows their recent excellent single as the band’s debut album.

Funkproof
The Revival

A formal vinyl release for a long-lost album from Funkproof, one of the little-known band projects fronted by jazz organist George Semper. Formed in 1972 and featuring members of Brenton Wood’s United Soul Association and The Merry Clayton band, The Revival was completed quickly but shelved because of record label restructuring. Nearly 50 years later, Tidal Waves Music presents a deluxe packaging of this brilliant record, featuring a download code for bonus tracks and interviews.

Scattered Purgatory
Lost Ethnography of the Miscanthus Ocean

Taiwanese experimentalists Scattered Purgatory, whose sound is pitched somewhere between the crazier end of krautrock and left-field metal, re-issue this compilation of material consisting of some of their earliest work, dating from 2013-2014. Originally released on cassette only, Lost Ethnography of the Miscanthus Ocean now appears on double gold-coloured vinyl.

Common Holly
When I say to you Black Lightning

When I Say To You Black Lightning, the second LP from Montreal singer-songwriter, is a charming set of indie-styled balladry. Tapping into the folksiness of Devendra Banhardt, Regina Spektor’s forthright attitude and Deerhunter’s murmuring ambient punk style, the one born Brigitte Naggar proves a beguiling and captivating central figure here. When I Say To You Black Lightning is out via Dalliance (Gia Margaret, Wilsen).

TR/ST
The Destroyer - 2

Montreal’s TR/ST comes through with the promised second chapter of his The Destroyer series. As it was with Part 1, The Destroyer - Part 2 is another set of sensual darkside synth-pop from the one born Robert Alfons. Alfons’ writhing delivery is a thrill throughout. Fans of Zola Jesus and Boy Harsher should throw themselves into The Destroyer - Part 2 with relish.

The Joy Formidable
A Balloon Called Moaning (10th Anniversary Edition)

To mark the 10th anniversary of its release at the end of 2008, Welsh indie-rock outfit The Joy Formidable - one of the most overlooked bands of their era, in our opinion - give us a double-album edition of their EP A Balloon Called Moaning. The original eight-track record is complemented by another disc, on which the band re-recorded all the songs acoustically and in Welsh.

Monolord
No Comfort

No Comfort, the fourth LP from Swedish group Monolord is also their first for Relapse Records. The trio make the step up with aplomb here, proving that they deserve their seat at the table with a set of doom-/stoner-metal hybrids. Tracks like ‘The Bastard Son’ break up the crushing riffage with some intricate incidental passages.

L'Orange & Jeremiah Jae
Complicate Your Life With Violence

Producer L’Orange and former Flying Lotus collaborator and rapper Jeremiah Jae team up once again for another album, following the critical success of their 2015 hook-up The Night Took Us In Like Family. Featuring 17 new tracks, Complicate Your Life With Violence ought to be another compelling collection.

Amber Run
Philophobia

Nottingham trio Amber Run return with their third LP of plush stadium-indie. Philophobia tows the line between the widescreen rock sound of mid-period Bon Iver and those all-hands-in-the-air, tears-in-the-eyes, sunset-selfie anthems that acts like Rag & Bone Man and George Ezra dominate the airwaves with all summer long. Speaking of all summer long, what’s Kid Rock up to these days?

Patty Waters
Live

Known best for her incendiary deconstruction of ‘Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair’, avant-garde singer and composer Patty Waters is one of the most overlooked icons of her age - perhaps because of the 30-year career hiatus she took between the Sixties and the Nineties. In 2018, she performed a one-off concert in New York titled ‘Blank Forms’, and this release, Patty Waters Live, documents that show. The first side is populated with stark ballads, while the second is full of political yet dignified and moving covers harking back to Waters’ Sixties origins.

The Cure
THE CURE: 40 LIVE - CURÆTION-25 + ANNIVERSARY

A choice of four DVD/BLU-RAY types of an extravaganza of the Cure-ness for all you long term followers and those smitten by their recent Glastonbury triumph. There's two different concerts. One is their Meltdown performance when they played one song of each of their thirteen studio albums and the other is their twenty nine song set at their 40th Anniversary concert at Hyde Park in front of 650000 adoring fans. So much the Cure here it will keep you going all winter.

Hawkwind
All Aboard The Skylark

Bloody hell, fifty years of Hawkwind. That’s impressive no matter what you think of their music. The space-rock voyagers may be pretty long in the tooth at this point, but despite their age they show no signs of slowing down - 'All Aboard The Skylark', their thirty-second studio LP (!), is as widescreen and bombastic as anything else in their output. The CD edition of All Aboard The Skylark also comes with a bonus album of acoustic jams. That’s a lot of Hawkwind! Good thing they can still do what they do like no-one else can.

La Troupe
Dancing

Erezioni continues in its quest to unearth hidden treasures from European disco history. After the sell-out success of Liquid Mask’s ‘Just A Moment’, now the reissue label exhumes 1984’s ‘Dancing’ by La Troupe, an Italo-disco delight, and contains the ‘Mix’ and ‘Tab’ versions of the track re-mastered from the original master tape.

Various
Factory Communications 1978-92

The compilation Factory Communications 1978-92 finally makes its way onto wax a full decade after the CD release. This bumper set needs little introduction - Factory Records, Tony Wilson, arguably the UK’s most important post-punk label, blah blah blah. All the big hitters are included here (yer Joy Divisions, yer Happy Mondays, yer New Orders) as well as some more obtuse Factory acts. This wide spread makes for a good blend of anthems and rarities - for every ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ there’s something like John Dowie’s ‘It’s Hard To Be An Egg’.
