Toho Sara
Toho Sara 東方沙羅

While most famous for establishing legendary psych-rock outfit Acid Mothers Temple, Japanese experimental musician Kawabata Makoto also founded avant-garde band Toho Sara in the mid-Nineties. Their 1995 debut album, Toho Sara 東方沙羅, now gets an expanded re-issue on vinyl for its 25th anniversary via Black Editions.

Musica Transonic
Musica Transonic

Musica Transonic was formed in 1995 by three luminaries of the Japanese underground music scene in Nanjo Asahito (of High Rise), Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple), and Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins). They psychedelia and hard rock as far as they would go on their ragingly loud self-titled debut, which gets a re-issue on vinyl via Black Editions for its 25th anniversary.

Go Hirano
Corridor of Daylights

Originally released back in 2004 and acclaimed as one of the greatest albums to have emerged from Tokyo’s underground music scene in the Noughties, Go Hirano’s magical third record Corridor of Daylights receives an expanded re-issue on vinyl. Includes bonus tracks, two inserts and an illustrated story booklet.

Optic Sink
Optic Sink

Taking a brief break from fronting noise-punk outfit Nots, the band’s vocalist Natalie Hoffman presents her debut album as Optic Sink, in collaboration with percussionist Ben Bauermeister. Emerging during the creative process for Nots’ 2019 album 3, Optic Sink is a more human and warm take on her parent band’s music.

The Beths
Future Me Hates Me

Carpark Records (Cloud Nothings, Toro Y Moi) present some fuzzy niceness from Kiwi quartet The Beths. Future Me Hates Me is a peppy synthesis of OG twee-grungers like The Lemonheads with the shy coyness found in the more recent fare of Yuck and Mitski. Nice harmonies, nice melodies, and the fact that the four members all have jazz chops ensures a higher level of musicianship that one usually finds on these sort of LPs.

Legowelt
Unconditional Contours

With a massive body of work as Legowelt that dates back to the mid-Nineties, Dutch producer Danny Wolfers has been one of the key figures in the European electronic music scene for as long as many people can remember. His latest album, Unconditional Contours, is the result of an artist’s residency at Swiss Museum for Electronic Music Instruments’s ‘Playroom’ scheme.

Arurmukha
14.11.90

Marking the date on which police violently cleared out squatters from a series of properties in reunified Berlin, 14.11.90 was the creation of Marc Weiser and Jurgen Hendlmeier as Arurmukha. With its themes of exploitation as urgent as ever in 2020, it now gets a 30th anniversary re-release on vinyl, complete with an insert chronicling the events in depth.

Julia Reidy
Vanish

Julia Reidy is a 12 string guitarist from Australia now vying for space with the remainder of the electronic and experimental music population in Berlin. Vanish sees the artist incorporating synth, autotuned vocals and other splintered things into her sound. It is her third album but her first for Editions Mego. Nik Void did the artwork for her.

Emperor
Emperor

Extreme metal stalwarts Candlelight have revisited Emperor’s back catalogue. Norway’s greatest symphonic black metal band were genre defining, and to have their debut EP on transparent red vinyl is real treat. All remastered, with the careful eye of the band, they’re back to rightfully reclaim the throne.

Emperor
Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise

Marking the start of a journey into more progressive territory, Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise was the fourth studio album from Norwegian black metal band Emperor. Nominated for a Norwegian Grammy Award in 2001 upon release, it now gets a re-issue, having undergone a half-speed remastering at Abbey Road.

Emperor
Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk

Candlelight return to the true cult, and have revisited Emperor’s back catalogue. Remastering and reworking cover art, all with the strict guidance of the band. Emperor pretty much defined Norwegian symphonic black metal. Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk was their second full length album ad featured a piece written by Mayhem’s Euronymous.

Emperor
In The Nightside Eclipse

This is the very first album released by true Norwegian black metallers Emperor. As one of the founding fathers of the symphonic wing of the genre, Emperor have a highly dramatic sound, balancing melodic dark synth melodies with ferocious howling forward movement. In The Nightside Eclipse is reissued on CD and transparent blue vinyl by the Spinefarm and Candlelight labels.

Coil
Sara Dale's Sensual Massage

The endless supply of Coil re-issues continues apace with Sara Dale's Sensual Massage which was their soundtrack to the erotic video of the same name. Unlike a lot of the group's work this is a dreamy ambient work with soft harmonies and a rather bucolic feel with birdsong and bells but also has elements of their more rhythmic work. Artwork by Steven Stapleton (Nurse With Wound).

LANY
mama's boy

I just can't get on with punctuation these days. LANY are a trio of capitalisation enthusiasts known for their arena rock album Malibu Nights from 2018. Mama's Boy (no capitalisation but I'm not playing this game anymore) continues their dancefloor-ready big rock sound that is absolutely ready for daytime Radio 2 playlisting.

Ism.
Fear Our Love

What have you been doing over the last 36 hours. I've pretty much lain in bed which puts me to total shame as Ism wrote, recorded and mixed this album in just 36 hours. The press release suggests that their sound is influenced by both Nurse With Wound and Mansun which is a new one on me -  they are known for harsh noise releases and deep psychedelic jams a la Loop.

Featuring remixes from Tzusing, Spite Cathedral, Ism. and Swedish newcomers Distortion Unit, in addition to new original material, Runs Through You + Your Body Is My Body – Bodies One Remixes Pt. II represents the first new music from Suspended In Gaffa for quite a few years, a mini-album of hypnotic techno.

Frank Zappa
Halloween 81

If you like Frank Zappa (and thousands do I've heard) then there are a couple of editions of his Halloween '81 live set floating about. For the really adventurous you could go for the 6CD box set which has 78 (count 'em) unreleased live tracks. For those of us with a more sensitive disposition there's a single CD 'highlights' edition. Your choice.

Elvis Costello
Hey Clockface

The second best Elvis is releasing his thirtieth studio album, titled 'Hey Clockface'. The various three singles indicate a diverse sound, taking in brash power pop, Nick Cave-esque smoky lounge jams, and angular post-punk. I've never been a massive Elvis Costello fan, and have never listened to any of his modern stuff, but this clutch of tunes might just rectify that...

Status Quo
Pictuersque Matchstickable Messages From The Status Quo

Just look at that title and try not to think of the early work of Spinal Tap. Quo were obviously a massive influence on Tap  - just look at how their names scan - both bands had a largely forgotten early psychedelic period before their harder rock years. Pictuersque Matchstickable Messages From The Status Quo. As well as magnificent super hit Pictures of Matchstick Men the album is notable for the soundalike opener Black Veils Of Melancholy and several other slabs of flowery psych goodness.

Nimbus Sextet
Dreams Fulfilled

Glaswegian jazz outfit Nimbus Sextet are formed around long-term collaborators Joe Nichols, Alex Palmer and Mischa Stevens, later joined by James Mackay, Martin Fell and Euan Allardice. Dreams Fulfilled represents yet more freshness being injected into Britain’s flourishing jazz scene, full of naggingly addictive hooks and locked-tight grooves.

The Damned
The Rockfield Files

In the early Eighties, British punk legends The Damned hit a rich vein of form when they entered Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, sessions which yielded The Black Album and Strawberries, as well as the Friday 13th EP. In 2019, three of the original band members present back then - Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible and Paul Gray - revisited the studio to lay down a new four-track EP, The Rockfield Files.

DSU

Right, people. We've been listening to this in the office for what seems like the last 6 months and we think it's going to take you by storm. Think of all the '90's lo-fi greats (but particularly Pavement) rolled up into a one man slacker-pop songwriting machine and you are in the ballpark.  Get in on the ground floor.

TV Priest
Uppers

Yet another promising punk band to have emerged from these isles in the last few years, London-based quartet TV Priest unleash their debut studio album. Off the back of two 6Music-championed singles in 2020 alone - ‘Runner Up’ and ‘House of York’ - Uppers is a ferocious, politically conscious headlong charge drawing down on industrial influences as well as classical punk ones.

The Cribs
Night Network

The Cribs have been out of the game for some time  - no fault of their own as they were bogged down in legal battles. What it does mean is that they've had time to refresh and to write a whole batch of new songs. They've recorded them at Foo Fighters studio and with Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth guesting on a few tracks. A welcome return for this much loved band.

Pole
Fading

Stefan Betke announces what’s just his third album as Pole in the last 13 years. Fading follows five years after last outing Wald, and just like all of his previous releases, it has a tangential connection to his past forays into experimental electronica. Specifically, it’s similar to his late Nineties opening trilogy of albums.

Elvis Costello
Brutal Youth

'Brutal Youth' was a 1994 album by a certain Elvis Costello. It was also the first music that he recorded with his band The Attractions since the 'Blood and Chocolate' LP they'd done together way back in 1986. Now regarded as one of his best albums - certainly one of his best in the 1990s at any rate - 'Brutal Youth' now comes re-issued courtesy of Music On Vinyl.

Lovey was the Lemonheads fourth album and their first for Atlantic. It was the first album that really showcased their songwriting talents and is full of lovely plaintive pop such as Half the Time, Stove and Ride With Me. It was their final album with founding member Jesse Peretz as the Lemonheads became purely Evan Dando's thing thereafter.

Portray Heads

This double LP compiles all the known studio recordings - plus a healthy handful of recently discovered tracks - from legendary Japanese minimalist electronic trio Portray Heads. Crippled Black Phoenix
Ellengæst

What the hell do you do when you start recording your album only to find out you don't have a leading male vocalist? Well for Crippled Black Phoenix it was the opportunity to source friends and collaborators to fill the gaps. It has lead to an album which doesn't even attempt to follow up the band's previous deep and moving Great Escape but instead to find new ways of presenting their sound. A set of circumstances which have led to an entirely new start for the band.

Elisa Ambrogio, Pete Nolan and John Shaw return with new Magik Markers music for the first time in over half a decade, at what seems like an apt time for them to bring their inspired noise-rock back. 2020 is heart-swallowingly urgent and ragingly loud, a perfect soundtrack for times of emergency and ignorance.

All the greats are here.., the Rembrandts of course but also Hootie and the Blowfish, Barenaked Ladies and Toad the Wet Sprocket. I Can I Can't
I Can I Can't

This self-titled compilation album gathers together the entire output of the (extremely) short-lived North London-based band I Can I Can’t. Consisting of just eight songs, the manic, breathless excursions on the first side alone demonstrate the inherent instability of this memorable outfit, and why they self-destructed so messily.

Itchy Bugger
Double Bugger

Itchy Bugger is Josh,  the Australian bloke from Diät and Heavy Metal. Double Bugger is his second solo album. Once again he is breathes some nocturnal lo-fi slacker pop into a four-track aided by a drum machine. It has been likened to Flying Nun classics by David Kilgour of The Clean and John Kelcher.

Karl Lindh
Bortom E4's Horrisont

A Swedish producer based in Gothenburg, Karl Lindh (real name Lukas Pettersson aka Luke Eargoggle) drops his olde 2005 electronic brainchild on wax for the first time via Low Company - 'Bortom E4's Horrisont'. With a sprawling selection of instruments featuring on the pieces, the Scandinavian marries numerous styles and flavours to create something authentic and vibrant. Superb jazz-tinged ambient that shows a totally different side to the artist - best known for his electro productions on Bunker and his own Stilleben label.

Special Occasion
The Word

Special Occasion - not to be confused with Special Occasion, the pop band briefly active in the mid 1980s - is the English duo of Messrs Guy Gormley and David Gray - not to be confused, I’m guessing, with David “White Ladder” Gray. Their album of cheery, lounging electronica The Word, previously a tape on Jolly Discs, is now an actual jolly LP thanks to the reissues dept. at Low Company.

Astaron
Astaron

A short-lived music and art duo from Vienna, Angie Mörth and Martina Aichhorn squeezed a lot into their time as Astaron at the end of the Eighties. Their self-titled album from 1987, a real collector's item combining minimalist darkwave with post-punk, gets a much-deserved re-issue on La Vida Es Un Mus, having been restricted to a run of just 500 at the time.

Sub-titled The Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny to make it appear like a compilation, it originally came out in 1959, and as a package, complete with its famous artwork, it served as a perfect introduction to Denny’s aesthetic.

Wren
GROUNDSWELLS

Becoming one of the leading lights of Britain’s metal scene over the last five years or so, Groundswells is the next studio album from Wren. Exploring folklore connected with the changing of the seasons once again, this post-metal masterpiece is produced by Scott Evans of Kowloon Walled City, their former touring mates.

Digable Planets
Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space) - 25th Anniversary Edition

Finally: a reissue of Digable Planets’ 1993 debut, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space)! It's the first time the record has been on vinyl since those heady days, now expanded to 2 discs. Their laid-back, finger-snappin' jazzy sound spawned the huge hit 'Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)' - and - the trio from Brooklyn, NY were awarded a Grammy in 1994.  House in a wide-spined jacket, including a booklet with Larry Mizell Jr's notes and interview of Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler.

Betty Davis
They Say I'm Different

She certainly was different. Her life alone is quite the story with relationships with musicians good (Miles Davis) indifferent (Robert Palmer) and bad (Eric Clapton) but it was her incredible funk and soul voice and mesmerising live shows which made her famous. They Say I'm Different was her second album from 1974 written and arranged by herself and has been declared a classic in the intervening years. Ahead of her time in many ways and with an excellent documentary about her life doing the rounds now is the chance to (re) discover her music.

Betty Davis
Betty Davis

To some of us, Betty Davis will always be a hero simply because she told Eric Clapton that she wouldn’t collaborate with him because his music was too boring. The fact that she is also one of the most important funk singers of all time only adds to her case. Here we get her eponymous, Sly & The Family Stone-backed 1973 LP reissued by Light In The Attic. Few LPs before or since have ever come close to matching the swagger on display across these tunes.

The Green Child
Shimmering Basset

Shimmering Basset is the second studio album from The Green Child, a duo consisting of Grass Widow member Raven Mahon and recording engineer Mikey Young. Recorded in Australia (rather than by long distance as was the case with their 2018 debut) it’s a much more assured and thematically coherent work.

Kutiman ft. Melike Sahin
Elimi Tut (Hold My Hand)

Israeli producer and musician Ophir Kutiel - a.k.a. Kutiman - hooks up once again with Melike Şahin of Turkish psychedelic act BaBa ZuLa for a new 7” single. Following last year’s well-received ‘Sakla Beni’, they return with a dazzling anthem in ‘Elimi Tut (Hold My Hand)’, with an instrumental version on the B-side.

Kikagaku Moyo
Forest Of Lost Children

Kikagaku Moyo improvise like they're falling through a black hole and can jam forever, and so Forest of Lost Children is just a snippet of their work together, a record that explores their meandering psych and folk workouts and picks out the best bits. This record buoys an Eastern influence and favours a frenetic clash of sounds over particular arrangements. They still sound tight, though.

Andy Bell
The View From Halfway Down

Guitarist in Ride for three decades, Andy Bell releases his debut solo album The View From Halfway Down to coincide with his 50th birthday. Produced with the help of former Oasis bandmate Gem Archer, work began over four years ago but was sidelined by the reformation of Ride. Completed under lockdown, it’s a precise presentation of all of the influences that have informed Bell’s style, from the Stone Roses to Spacemen 3.

epic45
Cropping The Aftermath

A lot of epic45's work concerns nostalgia and their latest album Cropping the Aftermath is a love letter of sorts to the '90s. The duo look back on the decade in which they discovered music  - of hearing garage beats on pirate radio and the evocative transmissions of the more forward thinking bands of the era that paved the way for the sound epic45 peddle today. This is their second full length release of what appears to be a very busy 2020.

Buffalo Tom
Birdbrain

Birdbrain was check shirted slacker rockers Buffalo Tom's second album released a whole 30 years ago so what better time for a vinyl re-issue. Fellow guitar slinger J. Mascis helped with production on an album which cemented the Boston band's melodic alternative rock sound and contains many track the band still play in concert even today.

Pan Amsterdam
Ha Chu

The enigma that is Pan Amsterdam returns with a new studio album. JW Francis
We Share A Similar Joy

Whilst trying to be a singer / songwriter, JW Francis was employed as a New York City tour guide. He also owns his own Murder Mystery Business. You wouldn’t guess any of this from his music though - he makes music that fuses Jonathan Richman and The Velvet Underground’s sound into dreamy lo-fi pop nuggets,. We Share A Similar Joy is his first album for Sunday Best.

Giant Rooks
Rookery

Giant Rooks are a German art-rock band whose debut Rookery showcases a melodic take on the genre that suggests they've been listening to Tame Impala, Alt J and Bon Iver and then have tried to swirl the results into a big blender. Sweet alternative rock with an R&B and hip-hop flavour that could do pretty well for itself given the correct exposure.

Muslimgauze
Emak Bakia

One of five albums that the late electronic music wizard Bryn Jones released under his Muslimgauze alias in 1994 alone, Emak Bakia was a gorgeous take on house music with Jones’ trademark percussion styles and Middle Eastern elements. It now gets a re-issue on CD, given a new mix and different artwork.

Denise Sherwood
This Road

If the name seems somewhat familiar especially given the links with On U Sound collective then it may not come as a surprise that Denise Sherwood is the daughter of Adrian Sherwood. She collaborates with dad on this, her debut LP as well as pals such as Lee 'Scratch Perry' and Mark Stewart (the Pop Group). The dark themes, heavy bass and clubby beats detailed here suggest that the apple hasn't fallen too far from the tree.

Byron The Aquarius
Apron EP

Having worked with electronic music luminaries such as Flying Lotus and Onra, Alabama-based musician Byron The Aquarius has been forging his mixture of jazz, hip-hop and house for a few years now, winning acclaim for his Astral Traveling album in 2019. This eight-track EP is his debut for the Apron label.

Frankie and the Witch Fingers
Monsters Eating People Eating Monsters...

Recorded in just five days immediately off the back of an exhausting period of touring that lasted almost a year, Monsters Eating People Eating Monsters… (title intended to be repeated ad infinitum!) shows Frankie and the Witch Fingers in blistering, road-hardened form. More intense and ambitious than anything they’ve recorded before, their psych-garage sound goes from strength to strength.

Ultravox
Vienna (40th Anniversary Edition)

Spectres
It's Never Going To Happen And This Is Why

Recorded in a 19th century Methodist church in Leeds under the aegis of producer Alex Greaves, Bristol-based noise-rock band Spectres grow ever more impressive with their third album, It’s Never Going To Happen And This Is Why. Featuring appearances from a clutch of other experimental artists, it’s a clipped and economical collection of ~3 minute tracks that largely ditch the feedback diversions of previous efforts.

Nicole Mitchell and Moor Mother
Offering - Live at Le Guess Who

Over three lengthy tracks taken from a performance at the 2018 Le Guess Who Festival in Utrecht, flautist Nicole Mitchell and spoken-word performer Camae Ayewa (a.k.a. Moor Mother) dovetail perfectly with each other’s skills: Offering - Live at Le Guess Who seems so planned for a spontaneous performance, and isn't easily categorisable.

Samia
The Baby

23 year old Samia Finnerty - the daughter of actress Kathy Najimy and comedian Dan Finnerty - presents her debut studio album. Forged largely while on the road for extended periods, The Baby is an introspective and stylish examination of personal relationships, flitting between funny and forlorn often within the same sentence.

John Parish & Polly Jean Harvey
Dance Hall At Louse Point

An album that tends to be unfairly disregarded as a mere side-project, Dance Hall At Louse Point by PJ Harvey and fellow musician John Parish was released in 1996. With Harvey writing the lyrics and Parish taking care of the music, it was a low-key but absorbing affair upon multiple listens, and now gets a much-deserved re-issue on vinyl.

Seatbelts
Cowboy Bebop (Original Series Soundtrack)

Airing for two series between 1997 and 1998, Japanese anime series Cowboy Bebop gained a cult fanbase in international markets, acclaimed for its story, animation and soundtrack among many other aspects. Animistic Beliefs
Thief of Sanity

Standing in stark contrast to their strident political beliefs and terrifically unhinged live shows, Animistic Beliefs go in a rather different direction with their latest EP. A four-track effort titled Thief of Sanity, Xakalele and rbf.linh conjure up some irrepressibly sad soundscapes amid the drum machine workouts.

The Heshoo Beshoo Group
Armitage Road

A highly prized collector’s item since it was originally released back in 1970, Armitage Road was the sole studio recording from The Heshoo Beshoo Group. A critique of the apartheid regime in their native South Africa set to an inventive fusion of American and African jazz traditions, it now gets hugely overdue re-issue on vinyl via We Are Busy Bodies.

Cordovas
Destiny Hotel

Cordovas are a band who spend every moment together. They live, eat and garden together in East Nashville. Their music is inspired by nature and mysticism. Destiny Hotel is an album of soulful Americana and southern rock - guitars, harmonies, hammond organs - you know the kind of thing. On ATO Records.

Machinedrum
A View Of U

Two decades into his career, North Carolina-based producer Travis Stewart delivers arguably his best Machinedrum album to date in A View of U. His skill at style-hopping is well-known, reflected in a stellar cast of guests here including Freddie Gibbs, Sub Focus and Jesse Boykins III, but this feels like a perfection of his art.
