Oliver Kearns
Amelioration

Pianist and field recordist Oliver Kearns has spun together a number of different threads to form the 67 minute Amelioration. An album that completely washes over you, before slowly revealing it's depth and variety. The space within its ambience is made real by free jazz inspired drumming. On Aphelion Editions.

Be My Friend In Exile
Portraiture Of Your Ashes / Dancing Through The Rubble Of An Abandoned Cathedral

Bristolian micro-label Aphelion Editions are back with another very limited run. This time they’ve turned their attention to ambient artist Be My Friend In Exile and his lengthy takes Portraiture Of Your Ashes / Dancing Through The Rubble Of An Abandoned Cathedral. Utilising electric guitar loops, keyboards and the occasional dreamily-rendered vocal, the artists creates rich and enveloping soundscapes that come across like a more cautious bvdub or Explosions In The Sky.

EMEI
EMEI

Bristol’s Aphelion Editions come through with a hyper-limited sound-sketch by EMEI. Opener ‘Frosted Glass’ sets the tone nicely for EMEI. Beginning with glacial prettiness, the melodies soon distort and overlap to create thick textures that bear comparison to the likes of both Fennesz and Explosions In The Sky. The record is an impressionistic one, with nursery-rhyme melodies, found sounds, screeching drones and more flitting in and out of the mix.

Star Turbine
The Great Distortion

Danish noise duo Star Turbine have two recordings from their 2017 UK tour put out on a micro-run by Aphelion Editions. Culled from performances in Bristol and Edinburgh, The Great Distortion captures the lo-fi idiosyncrats in full flow. At times skirting towards music concrete and sound-art, at others approaching doomy viscera, The Great Distortion is a record that has you craning your head to the monitor so you can better understand the transmission.

EP/64
XI-IX-MMXVI

XI-IX-MMXVI by EP/64: with a name like that, this’ll surely be topping the charts in weeks! Ok, maybe not. But this improvised sound-weirdo session is sure to delight fans of this sort of stuff, with its slippery, woozy mixture of vocals, electronics, and percussion. Plus reinterpretations from the likes of Stuart Chalmers and Burl on the B-side of the tape / second half of the CDr! Out on Aphelion Editions.

Ocean Floor
Four Shadows

After two tiny self-releases, Bristol based experimenter Aonghus Reidy brings his modular equipment to the Aphelion Editions label for Four Shadows. Slowly evolving electronic chords, pads and textures make up this late-night imaginary soundtrack. Headphones at the ready and a clear night sky for a long distance journey.

Microdeform
Neural Regression

Liam McConaghy’s Microdeform project lays between ambient, exploratory and cacophonous. Layers of statically charged loops, tape bends and vinyl fuzz, cloaking minimal instrumental improvisations. Think Leyland Kirby woozy-ness but with teeth. Originally only available on cassette, now made available on CD via Aphelion Editions.

Gareth JS Thomas
Wandsworth Sports

Aphelion Editions is shaping up to be an interesting label... Here they follow up their inaugural release by Tlön with a limited edition CDr/cassette tape by Gareth JS Thomas (USA NAILS, SILENT FRONT, MAYORS OF MIYAZAKI). Over the course of the album our lug holes are treated to dreamy ambient textures and eerie dronescapes, some sound collage/sampling/cut-up action and a wee dose of cranky techno to boot. All super atmospheric stuff ,that occasionally gets pretty weird - with an absurd and wicked sense of humour.

Tlön
Chapter II

Tlön is a collaborative project of Liam Mcconaghy and Stuart Chalmers. Whilst also working within projects Drachmae Lucky Strength, Microdeform, Chapter II is the follow up to their debut release on Birkhouse records in 2014, showcasing their almost serene musique concrete. Speeding and slowing percussion that constantly hints but never breaks into form, all set in a glacial soundcape.
