Elliott Smith
Figure 8

Shabby and shambling of appearance, Elliott Smith's look matched his songs in his earlier records. He was he weird loner who would win the race because he was so damn good. On Figure 8 they airbrushed both his face and his sound making a slick and polished record that saw those loveable rough edges smoothed away. Still they couldn't completely ruin Elliott Smith and Figure 8 features many examples of his the Beatles-esque prowess with a haunted melody. "I'm the wrong kind of person to famous" he once said and it's true  - we loved him just the way he was.

Elliott Smith
XO

XO was the moment the previously quiet and retiring songwriter Elliot Smith first attempted his cross into the mainstream. First up it was on Big Label Dreamworks and secondly it was properly produced in a functioning studio. The results you'll be glad to hear were absolutely fine. Though more orchestrated and a bit more polished, his superb craftsmanship shone through. Possibly (alongside Either/Or) the pinnacle of his recording career.

Mark Stoermer
Dark Arts

Mark Stoermer will mostly be known for his bass playing in indie-synth-pop band The Killers. But Dark Arts is a follow up from his 2011 solo debut. Having always been a vocal lover of Pink Floyd and The Beatles, Stoermer has delved into that psychedelic experimentation, and approached songs as individual pieces to great effect for this cinematic record.
