Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson
Chicago Waves

Los Angeles residents, composers and multi-instrumentalists Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson flew to Chicago to contribute to the Makaya McCraven album Universal Beings. They were so inspired by the city, and Lake Michigan, that it spawned an LP. Chicago Waves comes to us via International Anthem.

Angel Bat Dawid
Transition East

Conceived in tribute to the recently revived Chicago community centre that served as a base for AACM and icons from the Black Arts Movement in the 1960s, ‘Transition East’ heads up a 7” vinyl containing two new pieces from Angel Bat Dawid. The reverse, ‘No Space Fo Us’, was recorded during a collaborative trip to Brazil.

Makaya McCraven
Where We Come From (CHICAGOxLONDON Mixtape)

Here we have the distilled results of a happy meeting between new collaborators, including Makaya McCraven, Nubya Garcia, Soweto Kinch, Ben LaMar Gay, Quiet Dawn and more. Lots of live fun was had under the CHICAGO X LONDON banner, and the recordings were then taken home for remixing and rearranging by Makaya. The resultant Mixtape is vibrant indeed.

Dos Santos
Logos

Chicago group Dos Santos have an excellent approach, working with South American styles like cumbia and caminante and working them in with touches of psychedelia and tightly textural post-rock. Really it's a rich and forward-looking sound that makes all the combinations sound entirely natural. Logos is released by International Anthem.

Emma-Jean Thackray
Too Shy

When released last year on Makaya McCraven’s Where We Come From mixtape, Emma-Jean Thackray’s contribution ‘Too Shy’ was a clear stand-out. This 12” single on International Anthem gives it a proper stand-alone status, with another cut from the same compilation - ‘Run ‘Dem’ - remixed by one Gilles Peterson.

Makaya McCraven
In The Moment (Deluxe Edition)

In The Moment by Makaya McCraven was more successful than anticipated upon its initial release in 2015 meaning the first pressing disappeared pretty quickly. Giles Peterson made it his album of the week and several US publications made it their album of the year. This is the first repressing of the Paris-born jazz drummer’s sophomore release since 2015, expanded to a 3LP set.

Damon Locks / Black Monument Ensemble
Where Future Unfolds

Major work from Damon Locks and a fifteen-piece group he has gradually built up called Black Monument Ensemble. Where Future Unfolds began as a solo work of sound collage, by the time his group performed it at Garfield Park Botanical Conservatory in Chicago, where this live recording was made, it had become an epic of African-American music, encompassing gospel, avant-jazz, and fierce drum machine groove. A richly compelling performance, on International Anthem.
