Dos Santos
Logos

Chicago group Dos Santos have an excellent approach, working with South American styles like cumbia and caminante and working them in with touches of psychedelia and tightly textural post-rock. Really it's a rich and forward-looking sound that makes all the combinations sound entirely natural. Logos is released by International Anthem.

Emma-Jean Thackray
Too Shy

When released last year on Makaya McCraven’s Where We Come From mixtape, Emma-Jean Thackray’s contribution ‘Too Shy’ was a clear stand-out. This 12” single on International Anthem gives it a proper stand-alone status, with another cut from the same compilation - ‘Run ‘Dem’ - remixed by one Gilles Peterson.

Makaya McCraven
In The Moment (Deluxe Edition)

In The Moment by Makaya McCraven was more successful than anticipated upon its initial release in 2015 meaning the first pressing disappeared pretty quickly. Giles Peterson made it his album of the week and several US publications made it their album of the year. This is the first repressing of the Paris-born jazz drummer’s sophomore release since 2015, expanded to a 3LP set.

Jaimie Branch
FLY or DIE II: bird dogs of paradise

Fly or Die II: Bird Dogs of Paradise is the second album by American jazz trumpeter and composer Jaimie Branch. It is the follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2107 instrumental offering, Fly or Die. On her second album we hear her sing for the first time as she adds social commentary to her music. She counts Miles Davis, Don Cherry and Axel Dörner among her influences.

Angel Bat Dawid
The Oracle

A CD and vinyl release for Angel Bat Dawid’s instant cult hit The Oracle, following its limited edition release via cassette only back in January this year. Her ascendancy to becoming one of the prime movers in Chicago’s thriving jazz scene has been rapid, and The Oracle, recorded and produced almost entirely by Dawid herself, showcases everything about why her fans adore her.

Resavoir
Resavoir

Chicago-based jazz collective Resavoir look to deliver on the early hype, which garnered them patronage from Gilles Peterson among others, with their debut self-titled album. Led primarily by Will Miller of indie band Whitney, their take on jazz has been lo-fi, electronically enhanced with loops and samples.

Makaya McCraven
Universal Beings

Get ready for some more Epic Jazz -- 2018 has been another good year for it, what with Kamasi and all -- it's hot jazz drummer and producer Makaya McCraven with his latest LP 'Universal Beings'. The record was cut at two intimate live sessions and two impromptu studio sessions, in four cities: New York, Chicago, London and L.A. A total of 15 musicians worked with McCraven -- stellar improvisers all -- with Shabaka Hutchings, Nubya Garcia and Jeff Parker being but three of them. Double LP or double CD, on International Anthem Recording Co.

Damon Locks / Black Monument Ensemble
Where Future Unfolds

Major work from Damon Locks and a fifteen-piece group he has gradually built up called Black Monument Ensemble. Where Future Unfolds began as a solo work of sound collage, by the time his group performed it at Garfield Park Botanical Conservatory in Chicago, where this live recording was made, it had become an epic of African-American music, encompassing gospel, avant-jazz, and fierce drum machine groove. A richly compelling performance, on International Anthem.

Ben LaMar Gay
Downtown Castles Can Never Block The Sun

Chicago trumpeter, vocalist and composer Ben LaMar Gay doing some serious quality control here: the tunes making up Downtown Castles Can Never Block the Sun were chosen from seven unreleased albums. It’s quite a mix and it’s all of a very high quality, neither of which surprising. There’s gorgeous, melted piano textures (‘Melhor Que Tem’), brass duets, bizarre, restless future blues led by LaMar Gay’s handsome voice (‘Muhal’, ‘Swim Swim’), rap and all sorts.

Rob Mazurek & Emmett Kelly
Alien Flower Sutra

Rob Mazurek tends to be excellent, whether he is free improvising, composing pieces or organising other musicians. He does a bit of all three on Alien Flower Sutra, a collaborative album with Emmett Kelly of The Cairo Gang: Mazurek gave some of his compositions to Sao Paolo and Chicago’s finest, with rich results. On International Anthem.

Jeff Parker
The New Breed

Jeff Parker’s a big name to those with an interest in experimental jazz, with a place in Chicago’s Tortoise group and having released 5 albums himself. Making sample based music, Parker infuses a myriad of genres; jazz, R&B and electronica to name a few, to create a distinctive sound which edges into hip hop, with Parker citing the likes of J Dilla as an inspiration, whilst keeping a funky jazz sound here on The New Breed.
