Nivhek
After its own death / Walking in a spiral towards the house

Portland, Oregon based ambient master Liz Harris aka Grouper self-released this initially, and it disappeared so quick you couldn’t be blamed for not knowing of its existence. Luckily the Superior Viaduct subsidiary, W.25th have us covered reissuing it in all its glory. As Nivhek Harris takes here ambience further into delicate minimalism, where the stark and sheer tonality is all consuming.

Sarah Davachi
Pale Bloom

New LP from the prolific Sarah Davachi here. Though the Californian composer may release records at an impressive clip (Pale Bloom is her third full-length in little over a year) the quality of Davachi’s output never dwindles. What changes is the means, and on Pale Bloom we find her reconnecting with her first love - the piano. These eerily blissful pieces of minimal drone are hypnotic in an Eliane Radigue kind of way.

Cube
Decoy Street

Cube is a solo Californian sound-mangler, and Decoy Street is his second album to date. He’s definitely got a taste for the noise, and there are plenty of ferocious textures and even some crushed howls. But it ain’t just a harsh slab, there are beats and tape-tweaks and cunning darkness to be found here. Out on Superior Viaduct sub-label W.25th.

EXEK
Ahead Of Two Thoughts

Melbourne’s EXEK buck the trend for every Australian band to have a record released in the 2010’s by not being a psych-rock outfit. In fact, they’re an intriguing and smart group with shades of ESG, Public Image Limited and Melbourne royalty The Birthday Party. Tracks like ‘Weight Loss (Henry’s Dream)’ have more groove in their little finger than King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard had across the seven million albums they released in 2017.

EXEK
A Casual Assembly

A speedy follow-up the their 2018 LP, Ahead Of Two Thoughts, Australian arty types, EXEK release A Casual Assembly EP. The music within could be compared to the work of Jah Wobble, Laurie Spiegel and The Gift by The Velvet Underground. The music is supplied by synth strings, bass and trumpet with narration that recalls Samuel Beckett and Robert Ashley, this could also soundtrack a film by Derek Jarman or Stanley Kubrick. Fans of Normil Hawaiians, Jenny Hval and Harmonia should check this out. LP on W.25th

Nazoranai
Beginning To Fall In Line Before Me, So Decorously, The Nature Of All That Must Be Transformed

Laraaji & Sun Araw
Professional Sunflow

Laraaji’s come a long way ever since being discovered by Brian Eno in 1979. Whodathunk he’d find himself singing and playing his zither in Germany and Switzerland alongside experimental music maker Sun Araw? Not us, that’s for sure. Professional Sunflow features live recordings from Leipzig and Lausanne. Electric rhythms and soundscapes, accompanied by guitar and keys, lift up the heartfelt vocals into long, beautiful and disorienting jams.
