Noise pop quartet Morning Smoke were formed in Brighton in 2013. They have been likened to an Ian Curtis-fronted Sonic Youth in the music press. A handful of singles - In Euphoria EP, Hunger and Unknown, have preceded the release of Soft Decay, which is arguably the best of the bunch. Cassette on Canibal Hymns.
Eat Fast bring you lo-fi garage indie from Newcastle. New EP Immortal Kombat has six sweetly-written, heavily-played songs on it, with a general feel of fuzzy energy-rush running through the backbone of the EP. These fellas will surely be performing fatalities on a stage near you sometime soon. Immortal Kombat is a 12” release on the Cannibal Hymns label.
Our Girl make poppy, noisy blasts of shoegaze/noise pop which has earned them support slots with the likes of Dream Wife and Sunflower Bean. Kind of snotty lady-fronted indie rock with nods to all those '90s people we used to like such as the Breeders, Lush and even Sleeper. Promising start I reckon.
Brighton based five piece Abattoir Blues, as with their Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds borrowed name, sound as if The Birthday Party were into 90s emo like The Appleseed Cast and a bit of Crash of Rhinos, but more drunken, spacious and slowed down. Starting off so delicately and building the plucked theme into full on smashed chords.
Our Girl are part of a thriving music scene in Brighton and a led by singer and principal songwriter Soph Nathan. Their stock has been on the rise since they supported Honeyblood in 2014. BBC 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne has been a champion of the band. Their new single Sleeper is available on 7” on Cannibal Hymns and backed with Level.
