Dialect / Talkboy
In My Zone / Wasting Time

The latest 7” from Yorkshire singles club Come Play With Me puts MC Dialect alongside Leeds group Talkboy. ‘In My Zone’ and ‘Wasting Time’ are rather contrasting tunes - Dialect’s a grime tongue-twister with a flow that recalls Ghetts, while Talkboy are a peppy indie-pop band - but for whatever reason they work nicely back-to-back here. Are we witnessing the rebirth of grindie? This Norman Records™ lackey surely hopes so.

Marsicans
Your Eyes / Tallest Stories

A handsome lil' picture disk from Leeds' own Marscians (I'm not sure how to pronounce it either). On this double A side the band show off their vitality in striking technicolour style. The guitar tone on 'Your Eyes' is so bright that it's keeping Storm Gareth at bay and makes the band seem destined for a late afternoon slot on the UK festival circuit.

The Golden Age of TV / Engine
Television / And I Say

The latest double A-side from Leeds label Come Play With Me (Harkin, Magic Mountain) fronts two more fine bits of West Yorks indie. The Golden Age Of TV do a No Doubt thing on ‘Television’, and who doesn’t like a bit of Gwen Stefani et al? On the flip we get ‘And I Say’, the first new material from Engine since their excellent 2017 EP Cucumber Water. It’s another melodic, psychy stroll from the group.

The Boxing / Park Fires
Circles / Wake Me Up

The ever-reliable singles club Come Play With Me (Mansion Of Snakes, Harkin) have unearthed yet more new talent for their latest split 7”. Leeds duo Park Fires drop the sort of big-room synth-pop smash that Sia and Lorde would tear up the charts with had they been the ones to write it. The Boxing crank it up on the B-side - ‘Circles’ is a nice chunk of psych-rawk with a good ear for melody.

Magic Mountain / Jon Jones and the Beatnick Movement
Zodiac / No Brainer

Heavy Yorkshire rock crunch from two new bands from Bradfor and Leeds respectively. Jon Jones and the Beatnick Movement are good and garagey, while Magic Mountain are a supergroup composed of members of Menace Beach, Grammatics and Pulled Apart By Horses (wow!), with corresponding massiveness. Double A side split 7” single on Come Play With Me.
