The Necks
Body

You know how the Necks do. Wake up. Get the coffee on. Simultaneously improvise instrumental gold. Another day. The wonderful and surprisingly dense Unfold was their last record and it came out on LP; now in typical Necks fashion they're releasing a CD only called Body, relying on the usual and ever-so trusty combination of piano, bass and drums -- though percussionist Tony Buck is said to really go out on a limb with some guitar excursions on this one.

Allen Ravenstine
Waiting For The Bomb

Pere Ubu’s synth whizz Allen Ravenstine returns with a typically hare-brained record. Waiting For The Bomb is one of those rare LPs where you can’t really find a genre for it. It’s got a kind of Krautrock thing going on, but only in the sense that it combines acoustic and electronic instruments and has modular synths filling the space where you usually find vocals. There’s also a quality about it that leads you to think it could soundtrack a film one day, but then you’re stumped if you could say what kind of film. Related listening would be … Klaus Schulze? Amon Düül maybe? It’s good, anyway.

Roberto Musci / Giovanni Venosta
Water Messages on Desert Sand

Originally released in 1987 (by Chris Cutler), Water Messages on Desert Sand is a remarkable suite of international collage, mixing field recordings with synths, tapes, samples, effects and acoustic instrumentation. The results are finally woven like a tapestry, with an ethnographic element that just enhances the weight of the compositions. Reissued by ReR.

The Necks
Open

Aussie jazz stalwarts The Necks drop their umpteenth LP. On Open we find the trio in peerless form. The album consists of a single 68-minute-long work that hovers at the edges of experimental/free jazz - specifically the points where it meets musique concrete, electronic composition and post-rock. Rocketnumbernine, Oval and The Books are very rough touchstones, but really this is the work of a band in a league of its own.

This Heat
Health and Efficiency

This Heat remain one of the most unique and remarkable bands in existence, and it is a joy to see their catalogue being reissued on vinyl for the first time! Health & Efficiency is a hell of an EP, combining weird tape-manipulated soundscape ‘Graphic/Varispeed’ with the title track, which seems to accelerate at least 4 times before getting locked in a tight loop. Remastered audio, 180g vinyl, and a booklet of notes and photos, on Modern Classics.

The Necks
Vertigo

Vertigo is album number 18 for Australian jazz trio, The Necks. They like to take a simple idea and allow it to develop organically through improvisation. They don’t know where they’re going when they set off but they always seem to get there. Their music is very human, it allows room for space, it’s ambiguous allowing the listener to interpret it in their own way.

Lindsay Cooper
Rarities Volumes 1 & 2

Lindsay Cooper has done a lot of things, in her time: she's been a prominent activist, and she's also played a lot of oboe, contributing to a variety of avant-garde projects that illustrate her politically subversive viewpoint. Rarities Volumes 1 & 2 is an attempt at restoring the balance between her name and her music, to get some actual material sent over the wire and show off her talents as a solo performance artist.
