Ravi Shankar
The Rough Guide to Ravi Shankar

Maestro Ravi Shankar, virtuoso of the sitar helped to bring traditional Indian Classical music to millions of us Westerners since the '60s. Those kind folks at Rough Guide have collected together a few of Shankar's classic ragas as a kind of taster, an appetiser of a whole world of wonderful riches. Yes, some guys called 'The Beatles' and 'The Byrds' -- and lots of other psychedelia-minded folks named after misspelt animals -- adored him. LP on World Music Network with extra tracks as a download via the included code card.

The Rough Guide to Cambodian Psychedelia

This compilation, put together by the people behind the Rough Guide travel series, focuses on new Cambodian sounds of the '60s and '70s. Synthesising the American psych-rock so popular in the era with native musics and songwriting styles, these ten tracks are a window into an exciting time for the nation's music. Now they have been dug up with the help of Dengue Fever and The Cambodian Space Project. Given that the Khmer Rouge attempted to destroy all records in the country during their despotic rule, it’s amazing that we have this album at all.

Rough Guide to Bollywood: The Psychedelic Years

There are plenty of legends of Bollywood soundtracking here, going that extra psych mile. Featuring musicians such as R. D. Burman, Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi -- all influenced by Western Rock 'n Roll and the entwined 'flower power' culture of the 1960s. Thus mushroomed the Indian Psychedelic Underground. Includes a full-album download card plus extra bonus tracks.

The Rough Guide to the Music of Mali: Second Edition

Now there is a risk with this kind of release of presenting the music within only as ‘exotic’ ‘world’ music: I mean, this series is literally associated with travel guidebooks for tourists. Nevertheless, The Rough Guide to the Music of Mali is still full of great sounds, from artists including Vieux Farka Touré and Toumani Diabate, so still worth a place on your shelves.
