Bad Sav
Bad Sav

Featuring half the line-up of Death and the Maiden, and borrowing a drummer from Shifting Sands, Bad Sav is a noisy, shoegazy affair. The New Zealand trio has opened up a can of Whirr, added a pinch of Pity Sex, and sauced up a sweet self-titled debut of noise. LIYL Swervedriver, Kindling, or gherkins.

Élan Vital
Shadow Self

Elan Vital operate out of Dunedin, New Zealand, that hotbed of exciting creativity. The trio pull off a fine thing in taking the rich organ sounds of vintage days and applying their textures to the structures of synth-pop. Yum yum! Shadow Self is moody and danceable dream-pop to lose your head in, and it is released by Fishrider Records and Occultation Recordings.

The Shifting Sands
Cosmic Radio Station

Things are still popping in Dunedin, New Zealand: the latest group to follow the example set by The Verlaines and the like are Shifting Sands, who play an indie-rock that is at once beautifully pop and buried under a layer of fuzz. Cosmic Radio Station is produced in such a way that the instruments slide together into one gorgeous haze: lovely.

Death And The Maiden
Death And The Maiden

Supported by an earnest bass meandering through synthesized landscapes, Lucinda King’s vocals are perhaps the most human aspect of Death and the Maiden’s self-titled debut. The melancholy guitars and hot-on-your-tail drums contrast splendidly with her emotional singing, making the album an intense experience.

Temporary: Selections From Dunedin’s Pop Underground 2011-2014

The tiny city of Dunedin, located in the Otago Region of New Zealand, is synonymous with smart bands, incredible melodies and a wholly distinct and innovative music. Thanks to The Clean, The Chills, The Bats, The Verlaines, and The Dead C, Dunedin has amassed a worldwide reputation for innovative music. Local label Fishrider Records has taken on the mission of compiling and producing an album that casts a light toward the Dunedin of today. Whether it is dark synth-pop, teen angst noise pop, guitar-and-organ jangle, or all-out psychedelic weirdness, these songs all come from a place on the edge of the world where the young still read books in abundance and fend off boredom by creating music and art in cold houses.

Temporary (Selections From Dunedin’s Pop Underground 2011 – 2014)

Fishrider has worked with artists as renowned as the Dead C and ex Clean member Hamish Kilgour, but here the label looks to the future, with this newly curated selection of sideline pop music from now, rather than then. The thirteen bands on show here are Dunedin locals currently recording and playing shows within the scene, including Fishrider mainstays Opposite Sex and Trick Mammoth, among others. 'Temporary (Selections From Dunedin's Underground)' shows off up and coming tunes for New Zealand to send across the sea.
