Asher Gamedze
Dialectic Soul

Asher Gamedze is one of the foremost jazz musicians in Cape Town right now. His combination of spiritual and progressive jazz makes the drummer’s debut album, Dialectic Soul, an incredibly engaging listen. Joining him on the album are some of Cape Town’s best players: Thembinkosi Mavimbela on bass, Buddy Wells on tenor sax, Robin Fassie-Kock on trumpe and Nono Nkoane on vocals.

Super Liminal

A long-awaited vinyl re-issue of Super Liminal, the debut album from Afrolatin collective Penya which was originally released at the start of 2018. While the band are in the studio working on a follow-up album, they deliver a new EP in collaboration with Msafiri Zawose alongside this timely re-pressing of their debut, a whirlwind of rhythms and different production techniques.

Collocutor have reduced their members from seven to five for the making of Continuation, and as the title suggests, it’s business as usual for band leader Tamar Osborn and Co. It is their third album, and finds Osborn dealing with grief and trying to keep things on an even keel. The modal jazz crew’s previous album, The Search, won praise from Giles Petersen and music mag The Wire.

Hieroglyphic Being
Synth Expressionism/Rhythmic Cubism

Synth Expressionism/Rhythmic Cubism is the latest LP from one of Chicago's most prolific sons, Jamal Moss AKA Hieroglyphic Being. Moss takes sounds from all aspects of the Chicago dance scene and beyond, seemingly never happy sticking with one genre. Polyrhythmic, polyphonic, anchored by bass, rooted in Chicago, but open to new ideas.

Tenesha The Wordsmith
Peacocks & Other Savage Beasts

An LP of potent music from spoken word artist Tenesha The Wordsmith here. Peacocks & Other Savage Beasts is comfortable alongside both Tenesha’s contemporaries like Noname and the ancestral sounds of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Gil Scott-Heron. Tenesha’s evocative, impassioned writing dovetails well with the hallucinatory Afrofuturist jazz soup behind her here.

Collocutor’s 2014 LP Instead was the first thing to be released by On The Corner Records. It is the album that set the tone for a label whose impressive roster now includes artists like Dengue Dengue Dengue and DJ Khalab. Furthermore, you can make the case that Instead is one of the LPs which helped kick-start the London nu-jazz scene that has produced Moses Boyd, Joe Armon-Jones et al. Led by saxophonist/flautist Tamar Osborn, Collocutor’s sound is a rhythm-heavy mix of various jazz colours - free, spiritual, bop, astral and soul all get a look-in here.
