Villa Abo
Carpet Proof Of Daily Reports

Jan Zware Svensson, who is also known as Frak and the guy who runs Borft records, takes a little trip back in time. 20-odd years ago, one of his early projects Villa Abo, made Stateside-style house tracks such as Ticketiketas and Tagetes. He’s at it again on Carpet Proof of Daily Reports. 300 hand-numbered copies. LP on iDEAL Recordings.

Various
The Black Book

Joachim Nordwall celebrates twenty years of his most excellent iDEAL Recordings label with this triple LP bursting with a whopping nineteen exclusive tracks from the absolute cream of underground noise/electronics/avant/drone/skewed techno and beyond. Just peep the cast he's assembled - a stellar line-up of legends and fresh blood; JASSS, Pact Infernal, Ramleh, Vanity Productions, Jim O’Rourke, Mokira, Jonathan Uliel Saldanha, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Dungeon Acid, Carlos Giffoni & Prurient, Ectoplasm Girls, JS Aurelius, John Duncan, JH1.FS3, Stephen O’Malley, E3 Trepaneringsritualen manifest as Týr × Reið × Vend, Coppice, Autumns and Drew St Ivany. PHWOARRR!

Saturn and the Sun
In Love With The Extreme

Now that The Skull Defekts no longer exists, Joachim Nordwall and Henrik Rylander have had to find other ways to fill their days and satisfy their creative impulses. In Love With The Extreme is by the pair's Saturn And The Sun project on which they take a visceral approach to minimal electronic music.

J.O.S
Ultra

I'd probably have a word with my record label is they sent out a press release saying I fondled synths, but then I'm not J.Ö.S. aka Johan Öhman Sollin. On Ultra, the Swede channels the boring bleakness of Scandinavian winters into sci-fi soundtrack style compositions that bring to mind James Ferraro and Oneohtrix Point Never's early stuff.

Mika Vainio & Joachim Nordwall
Monstrance

This 2013 crusher from Mika Vainio & Joachim Nordwall comes back around to squash us all over again. Originally issued on Touch and now reissued on Nordwall's own iDEAL Recordings imprint, mastered at EMS, Stockholm and now with new artwork by Philip Marshall. This collaboration had the duo recording back in 2010 in Einstürzende Neubauten’s Berlin studio where they used drums, guitars and electronics to manifest a truly heavyweight, menacing sound that the likes of Emptyset would later go on to pursue.

EVOL
Ideal Acid

A hyper-rave extravaganza from the naughty boys behind EVOL here. Ideal Acid is a typical combination of flair and wit. The two sides here are most definitely acid house, but it’s acid house as you’ve never heard it before. It’s testament to their talent that they manage to make Ideal Acid such a cohesive listen.

Vanligt Folk
Palle Bondo

Baffling and haunting material from hardly-classifiable electro-creeps Vanligt Folk. Palle Bondo was written as a critique of the social stigmas of disability. In particular, it targets the notion of strangeness only being acceptable to society when it is clearly a chosen style of performance - with a “normal” agent beneath it. Fragments of familiar electro, dub and even industrial references make up these spacious productions. Nice early Autechre sample on the closing track!

Carlos Giffoni
Vain

How have we all managed to do without new business from Carlos Giffoni for six whole years? Lord only knows, but the No Fun bossman is certainly back in action now, presenting new full-length LP Vain for our pleasure. It's a varied journey through modern electronics, with lots of precise and powerful synthesiser activity as well as some pounding blasts. Out on iDEAL Recordings.

Pan Daijing & Werner Dafeldecker
A Page To A Corner

iDEAL Recordings (Merzbow, Jim O’Rourke) presents the first new material from Pan Daijing since her celebrated Lack LP was released by Pan in 2017. A Page To A Corner sees her join forces with Werner Dafeldecker to create two pieces of evocative, richly dynamic sound art. There is a sense of creeping, murky unease to both the title track and B-side ‘Daughters Of The Botanist’, with the latter a particularly brooding enmeshing of croaked vocals and droning gong-like sounds.

John Duncan
Riot

John Duncan’s 1984 release Riot still stands as a landmark in extreme music, sonic experimentation and music concrete. Even Duncan himself says that “[i]f there is any one must-have release that defines my work in sound, this is it.” Bringing together shortwave radio broadcasts with found sounds, field recordings and morse code transmissions, the work is a more abrasive manifestation of what Steve Reich and John Cale were doing at the same time. This release of Riot by iDEAL is more of a 2018 update, featuring as it does some re-recorded parts and material that didn’t make it onto the original release.

Ectoplasm Girls
New Feeling Come

A second album of ghostly mysteriousness arrives from Ectoplasm Girls, 5 years after their debut. New Feeling Come is a set of ravaged ambience and haunted synth-pop from the Swedish sisters, sure to leave the listener with uncanny vibes. Only 300 copies of this LP are available, courtesy of iDEAL Recordings.

Good Area
Macbeth

Good Area is the pairing of Allen Mozek and the ever-intriguing Gabi Losoncy. Though the pairing is now defunct, this LP remains! Macbeth is the second and final Good Area LP, and it’s a fine block of skronky dilapidated noise-unrock. Yes that’s right, instruments get played, in vaguely cohesive combinations! Vinyl edition of 300, on iDEAL Recordings.

Stephen O'Malley
Fuck Fundamentalist Pigs

Highly sought after and very limited second pressing of a solo performance by Stephen O’Malley. Member of drone lords Sunn O))), Æthenor, Khanate, and founder of Southern Lord and Ideologic Organ. His personal statement after the Hebdo attacks is anger towards facist and fundamental movements through his droning guitar and a huge stack of amplifiers.

Henrik Rylander
Feedback Overload Unit

Henrik Rylander (of the Radium 226.05 crew from Gothenburg, ‘80s / ‘90s) continues to plough raw and minimal terrain on his latest record Feedback Overload Unit. He extends the line through pioneering electro-acoustic guys Pierre Henry and Gordon Mumma, also drawing modern-day comparisons to Mika Vainio and CM von Hausswolff. Chilly, rough-hewn beauty from the cusp. 300 edition white vinyl LP on iDEAL Recordings.

Sewer Election
Malign

White Stains
The Work Workings (Volumes 1 & 2)

A glorious tape reissue of White Stains’s The Work Workings  from 1989, with the second tape filled with material described as being “probably never released”. Starting with pounding industrial drums over the course of the first two sides the percussion gives way to heavily distorted noise and overdriven drones. FFO Russell Haswell. Highly limited pressing.

Stephen O'Malley
Dread Live

Sunn O)))’s feedback architect Stephen O’Malley cranks the amps even louder on his solo vinyl LP Dread Live. This is an extended and extremely loud improvisation for solo guitar (though the colossal heaviness sounds like an army of guitarists). Relentless waves of heavy drones and squeals bombard the listener; the man has turned distortion into an artform.

Stephen O'Malley
End Ground

Drone-guitar-merchant Stephen O’Malley steps away from his wide array of collaborators (with Greg Anderson in SunnO))), with Peter Rehberg in KTL etc.) for a solo release, a document of a live set in Paris in 2013. End Ground sounds precisely as heavy-weighted and slow-growing as you’d expect. Second and final pressing on iDEAL Recordings in an edition of 250 copies.

Russell Haswell / Dungeon Acid
Split

Russell Haswell here shares wax with an artist whose name decently describes Haswell’s own sound: Dungeon Acid. The Dungeon master lays out some deep and heavy acidic dancefloor material, while Haswell goes harsh and fierce with barely-contained, theoretically-danceable noise. 12” split on iDEAL Recordings, limited to 300 copies.

Dave Phillips
Rise

I think this is one of the scariest records i’ve ever heard. Unsettling and arrhythmic terror from Dave phillips, member of outsider art group Schimpfluch-Gruppe. Sample track we know enough to know how much we will never know layers violent impacts with a solid repeating bass tone, heavy breathing, animal-like growls and shrieks. The rest of Rise plays out in the same nihilistic fashion in a violent industrial scene, with bursts of what seems like Black metal and horrific torture. Lovely.

John Duncan
This Bitter Earth

John Duncan has been enjoying subjecting familiar songs to his unique approach for a while now, and this 7” (a sort of addendum to his Bitter Earth LP) is no exception. A Pere Ubu B-side, a 60’s R&B tune, and Jules Styne’s ‘I Fall In Love Too Easily’ are all turned into eerie ambient micro-dramas that are super-compelling. 7” on iDEAL Recordings.

Hypnotower
Unlearn

Hypnotower is the solo project of Tanya Byrne, one half of Ectoplasm Girls. Her Unlearn record is quite a thing, slinking through different modes of spooky noise. Lots of disembodied voices and distant thuds, as well as upswells of industrial and black metal sounds. Only 300 copies of this LP on iDEAL Recordings.

Joke Lanz
Plays Sudden Infant

Joke Lanz Plays Sudden Infant: in which long-term noise provocateur Joke Lanz picks up a stack of his own old records under his Sudden Infant alias and cuts and splices and juxtaposes the sounds with wild abandon. Somewhere between a noise DJ set and a brand new electro-acoustic jumble-up. Fun times! Limited to 300 LP copies on iDEAL Recordings.

Christer Bothén
Ljudskulptur För 5

A great logical step for fans of Colin Stetson. Christer Bothén builds micro worlds of percussive drones and pops through his reeds. Immersive headpone stuff where the silence is almost as important. Best known known for his work with Fire! Orchestra and collaborating with Don Cherry, this is a master at work.

Saturn and the Sun
Focus On the Centre Of Your Skull

Focus On The Centre Of Your Skull by Saturn and the Sun is a visceral yet mind altering mix of psychedelic electronics, ‘80s industrial music, minimal techno and dub. Claims that this will leave your brain in tatters are probably not far from the truth. Recorded directly to tape then pressed to vinyl.

Ryan Martin & Joachim Nordwall
Trance Below The Streets

The title Trance Below The Streets presumably refers to the state of mind that these two deep synth-heads fell into while recording the record in a chilly basement. Ryan Martin and Joachim Nordwall weave their tender electronic patterns around one another, forming beautiful crystalline sculptures. 300 LP copies on iDEAL.

RM
Unfit

RM is Riccardo Mazza, one half of Lettera 22, who happen to be an excellent Italian electro-acoustic / noise duo. For his solo full-length debut, RM is slipping stern beats and sturdy rhythms into the mix, resulting in a murky, harsh-edged journey to a scary club environment. Unfit is out on iDEAL Recordings, limited to 300 copies.

John Duncan
Bitter Earth

Bitter Earth is a remarkable album of cover versions (Iggy Pop, Nina Simone and various other interesting choices) performed by John Duncan and his cast of collaborators. He’s assembled quite an array of musicians: Jim O’Rourke, Smegma, CM Von Hausswolff, Oren Ambarchi… A real special LP, out on iDEAL Recordings.

Dionysian
Dionysian

‘Dionysian’ by Dionysian is a collaborative memorial project release from experimental sound and art labels Börft records and iDEAL records, in celebration of the music of their friend and contemporary Joel Brindefalk. This release focuses on the noisier elements of Joel Brindefalk’s back catalogue by posthumously issuing long unreleased, industrial noise material composed over a weekend in 1992 with friends and fellow noise makers Joachim Nordwall, Christian Topac and Johan Petersson.

Ornament
Protest Music

Joe DeNardo usually makes music with the band Growing, but here, as he’s treading a slightly different path, he has adopted the name Ornament. Protest Music was recorded in Brooklyn in 2014. It has interesting arrangements that develop from discordant folk beginnings, raw guitars and messed-up production with thick, lurching drone throughout. Ornament has created a complex album that deals with the mundanity of life.

Will Guthrie
Sacree Obsession

Adventurous percussionist Will Guthrie is so great at what he does that he can fill two sides of an LP with only percussive instruments, and make it fascinating as he does so. Electrifying soundscapes from gongs and drums ritualistically assembled, with a lot of space on the first side and a more driving rhythms on side two. On iDEAL Recordings.

CM Von Hausswolff
Plays John Cage II

Scandinavian experimentalist CM Von Hausswolff takes on one of the grandfathers of experimental music, John Cage. Plays John Cage II features a version of the famous ‘4’33”’, this time ‘for electric guitar (broken amplifier version)’. Premium crackle. Released as a 7” square flexi-disc in a PVC bag by iDEAL Recordings.

EVOL
Purple Melters

Brain-smashing hardcore wave-synthesis from Evol here on this new 12” on iDEAL Recordings. The aim of these intense, super-repetitive pieces is apparently to warp the listener’s perceptions, and it seems to me to do an excellent job. Get your Purple Melters on yellow vinyl, with a free sticker of a mocking acid smiley face.

iDEALISM Volume One

White 12” vinyl on iDeal. First in a series of compilations from iDeal, showcasing their particularly disturbing brand of harsh experimental music. Features Altar of Flies, Peder Mannerfelt. Frederikke Hoffmeier’s 3rd Monologue is one of the most unsettling tracks I’ve heard in a while. For fans of Nate Young et al.  Limited edition of 300 copies.

Altar Of Flies
Altar Of Flies

Mattias Gustafsson is the human being behind the 'Altar of Flies' moniker and his new self-titled release -- the follow-up to 2010's 'Permanent Cavity' -- continues his experimental and free-minded vision. It's moulded out of field recordings and electronic manipulations that speak to the personal experiences of Gustafsson himself -- kind of like singer-songwriter musique concrete. Personal noise that still sounds good to the unsuspecting listener.

Ü
Doobedoo Dub 'e’ Dope

First off, Doobedoo Dub’E’Dope by Ü: full credit is due for that titling. This LP, on iDEAL, is sadly a posthumous release, as Joel Brindefalk of Ü died last year, only 37. His friends at the label have seen fit to pull this material from the archive, and be glad they did: Doobedoo Dub’E’Dope contains Brindefalk’s take on Dub, influenced by the darker European synth sounds he was so familiar with.

Daniel Lowenbruck & Marcellvs L
Stallgewitter

Berlin-based experimental sound artists Daniel Lowenbruck and Marcellvs L (from Germany and Brazil respectively) join forces on this 7" to present a single 10-minute piece culled from field recordings captured in Thailand, Iceland and the UK. It's an awkward found-sound patchwork of log fire crackles, swells of hissing static and watery spray, muffled footfalls and indeterminate squeaks and flutters.

Frak
Alice in Acidland

Alice In Acidland is a very different kind of child's story in which everyone is brought up on esoteric techno. Frak goes hard and relentless on this release, worshipping his old techno and rave heroes and offering no frills, no respite no love. Cold, dark and distorted cuts from a person who should not be trusted to tell fairytales.

Russell Haswell
8 track EP

Russell Haswell is as direct as ever on this new release on iDEAL Recordings. An EP with 8 tracks? Yeah, call it 8 track EP and be done with it (see also the cover art). The sound is no different, blasting the listener with first-take, no-overdub noise, or ‘nO!se’, as Haswell would have us say.

Reissue of an hour’s-worth of 2007-vintage Kevin Drumm, first released on cassette. Purge is now back in print and on CD, which means it is ready to dominate your stereo if you dare let it. This is Drumm in a ferocious and harsh mood, with wave after wave of dominating electronics cascading over the listener. Oh yeah! Edition of 500 CD copies on iDEAL.
