Willie Gibson
Saint Ex

Huntington-based modular synthesist and private aviator Willie Gibson creates an evocative aural homage to French writer (most famously of The Little Prince and Sand, Wind and Stars) and ill-fated aviator Saint Exupéry. Other than a bit of drumming and the voice of Emma Winston (Deerful), all sounds were made by modular synth.

Papernut Cambridge
Nutlets II (1978-2001)

Papernut Cambridge release their second album of covers to date, and its a proper job: Nutlets II contains twenty tracks, each sourced from crucial young-person memories of bandleader Ian Button. These songs have great personal weight, and you can hear that come through in Button’s re-imagining of them. Includes tunes by Throbbing Gristle, Suede and Daft Punk!

Deep Cut
Different Planet

Deep Cut is the new project of (among others) former Revolver/Death In Vegas member Mat Flint. Flint, singer Emma Bailey and a few others whip up a pleasingly retro spread on new album Different Planet. Think Smashing Pumpkins, Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, that sort of thing. Occasionally the band’s sound becomes a little more contemporary - ‘Hanging Around’ could pass for Deerhunter.

Keiron Phelan
Peace Signs

Kieron Phelan (of State River Widening, Smile Down Upon Us and Littlebow) recorded this cosy album with Brona McVittie, Oliver Cherer and numerous others with Ian Button and Giles Barrett at the mixing desk. Lyrical themes include wayward Japanese satellite Hitomi (charmingly personified as ‘Satellite Hitori’), Scandi-noir literature, Late Middle Ages poet Geoffrey Chaucer and hippies.

The Cold Spells
- .... . / -.-. --- .-.. -.. / ... .--. . .-.. .-.. ...

Kind of eponymous album from East London/Essex weird folk duo, The Cold Spell. I say kind of because, for those of you not fluent in morse, those dots and dashes spell the band's name. Eccentric songs with a traditional soul made from acoustic guitars, drum machines, and a The Wicker Man-ish sense of unease.

Life Pass Filter
Joseph EP

Life Pass Filter have recorded their Joseph EP for a baby called Joseph. The boy is the first born to the band’s group of friends and therefore is quite special to them. The band, who hail from Lille in France, take their influences from modern indie and ‘60s pop. Their lo-fi acoustic approach has drawn comparisons to some sort of mythical Tyrannosaurus Rex-meets-Beck type band. CD on Garde Du Norde limited to 80 copies.

Willie Gibson
Vivaldi: Seasons Change

Willie Gibson is an electronic music composer working in the wilds of Cambridgeshire. He spent a year recreating one of the most popular pieces of classical music - Vivaldi's Le Quattro Stagioni - using a modular synthesizer. Gibson transcribed each element of the score into MIDI, built each instrument sound from scratch and recorded the parts track by track as audio, re-patching the modular synth each time. Literally an unrepeatable process. In the spirit of earlier vintage/futuristic adaptations of classical music (e.g. Wendy Carlos) but also via Kraftwerk, modern chiptune and even the same robot seed that produced The Who's Baba O'Reilly, Gibson has given the mathematical beauty of these pieces a bright new makeover.

Matthew Edwards & The Unfortunates
Folklore

Depicting Matthew Edward’s return to England, and Birmingham after living in California for two decades, the follow up to 2012’s The Fate, Folklore shares a loving theme reflecting the previous work’s title. This indie-folk-pop is tinged with simultaneous adoration and sadness at returning to from where you once came. Featuring guest players  who have worked with the likes of PJ Harvey, Brian Eno, and Captain Beefheart.

Papernut Cambridge

Papernut Cambridge
Love The Things Your Lover Loves

Papernut Cambridge is a project helmed by Ian Button of Death In Vegas and featuring the considerable talents of Darren Hayman and Robert Rotifer among others. They do a sort of lushly orchestrated alt-chamber-pop-rock of the sort not much seen since the 70’s, and all with witty sense of flair and joy. Third album Love The Things Your Lover Loves is out on Gare Du Nord Records.

Ralegh Long
Hoverance

‘Hoverance’  is English singer/songwriter Ralegh Long’s debut album on the London based Gare Du Nord records. Heavily influenced by seventies folk songwriters such as Nick Drake and Laura Nyro and the pastoral English countryside surroundings Young looked out over across his piano as he wrote the album, ‘Hoverance’ is an intimate composition of rich instrumental arrangements awash with deep longing and heartbreaking piano tones. Featuring contributions from artists such as Tom Dougall (TOY), Jack Hayter (Hefner), Louis-Phillipe (El records, The Clientele) and indie-pop orchestra A Little Orchestra.
