Stephen O'Malley / Anthony Pateras
The more avant Sunn-y man Stephen O’Malley here teams up with Anthony Pateras, a piano, organ and Revox tape machine player. This recording builds on a live set in Paris 2011, reconfiguring the drone-concrete material into yet more elaborate formations. Reve Noir has that dark heavy O’Malley core, but also pushes into lots of other cool directions. LP with an interview-packed booklet, on Immediata.
The second release from Immediata brings recordings from the now defunct Thymolphthalein. Aptly described as outsider electronics they blended composition with live improvisation. Tonally, the result is somewhere between Æthenor and Crackle - abstract yet following vaguely familiar and followable paths.
Composers Anthony Pateras and Erkki Veltheim do something elaborate and bewildering involving ‘spectral techniques’, but all we really need to know is how lovely it sounds. One plays piano and the other violin, but the two instruments are deeply intertwined to create beautiful orchestral music indebted to minimalism and drone. This 300-only edition of Entertainment=Control comes with 24-page booklet and Ecopak CD case.
