SebastiAn
Total

This was the debut album from French electronic artist SebastiAn who you can see kissing himself on the sleeve art. He probably should have also kissed Daft Punk whose sound this isn't all that far away from. An eclectic romp through disco synth and electronica, it was heralded as one of the Dance albums of the year on release. It has literally loads of songs which Because Music have spread over a 2LP + CD re-issue.

Metronomy
Metronomy Forever

Where has Metronomy’s Joseph Mount been since 2016’s Summer 08 album? Well, he’s been hanging out with Robyn and contributing to her album, Honey. He’s back on home turf now though with another Metronomy album called Metronomy Forever. Working with Robyn and moving from Paris back to England to live on a hill have informed and inspired the new set of songs.

SebastiAn
Thirst

Coming eight years after his first album Total, during which time he’s helped to produce the likes of Charlotte Gainsbourg and Frank Ocean, Sébastien Akchoté (known as SebastiAn) at last delivers his sophomore studio effort. Using his expanded rolodex of contacts, Thirst includes guest spots from the likes of Syd (The Internet), Sparks and the aforementioned Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Manu Chao
Clandestino / Bloody Border

The reason that Manu Chao is now the poster-boy for ‘world music’ (we’ll not delve into the politics of that particular term here) is largely due to the success of his debut LP Clandestino. This record has sold a bajillion copies since its release in 1998 and continues to be beloved for its poppy mix of Latin guitar styles, reggae, multilingual lyrics and vaguely revolutionary invective. Personally this Norman Records™ writer is most grateful for this record because it paved the way for Robbie Williams’s truly mind-boggling cover of ‘Bongo Bong’ about a decade later. This new edition of Clandestino has been remastered and contains a trio of new songs - one of which is an updated version of the title-track.

Metronomy
Nights Out

Way before they became a curly-haired pop phenomena, Metronomy were a weird little electro band. This is the first album where they started to write 'proper' songs and have a man sing them. "Heartbreaker' particularly foreshadows their increasingly endearing rinky-dink pop. 10th anniversary re-issue 2LP on Because.

Brandt Brauer Frick
Echo

Classically trained electronic music trio Brandt Brauer Frick deliver their fifth studio album Echo - and second for Because Music. Recorded at their own facilities in Berlin, Daniel Brandt, Jan Brauer and Paul Frick deliver a dancefloor-focused variant of their normally austere electronica experiments.

Diplo
Europa

A limited edition splatter-vinyl version of the latest 12” EP from veteran Grammy-winning pop producer Diplo, whose talents extend into hip-hop and club music as well as shiny chart hits. This 16-minute collection, featuring rising British rapper Octavian among others, was originally released back in February this year. Fresh of his recent cameo in Pokémon Detective Pikachu.

Kongas
Afrodesia

Disco legend Marc Cerrone reboots his erstwhile Kongas project. Given that the group have only released the odd EP for the last 40 years it’s unsurprising to find that Cerrone drafted in new blood to help lay down Afrodesia. Despite the change in personnel these exuberantly funky tunes show that Cerrone still knows how to get a party going after all these years. Anyone still mourning the passing of Prince should find some solace in Afrodesia.

Kap Bambino
Dust, Fierce, Forever

Imagine having to deal with Dust, Fierce, Forever. Would be dreadful, wouldn’t it. Mind you, Kap Bambino don’t seem to mind. Indeed, the French duo seem to be rather enjoying themselves here - in a sort of post-apocalyptic chiptune rave way, that is. Alice Glass is the obvious comparison. Dust, Fierce, Forever is Kap Bambino’s third LP for Because Music.

The Beta Band
The Three EPs (20th Anniversary Remaster) [Deluxe Edition]

Noted for *that* moment in High Fidelity when the guy in the store says "let's sell some records" and puts a Beta Band track on and people start wandering up to the counter to find out what it is. It's a reminder that the early the Beta Band was a good thing - their reputation is based on these three early EPs. The fact that they subsequently disappeared down a rabbit warren of their own making is, in time, starting to be forgotten.

JJ Cale
Stay Around

JJ Cale died in 2013. Stay Around the first album of new material to be released posthumously. Cale mastered the art of laid-back blues rock early on, and Stay Around is no exception to that formula. Indeed, lead single, Chasing You, is a typical slice of JJ Cale. He was a huge influence on Eric Clapton who covered two of his songs: Cocaine and After Midnight, but don’t let that put you off. LP & CD on Because Music. LP comes with a CD version of the album.

Major Lazer
Major Lazer Essentials

A collection of the greatest hits by Diplo “masculinity is a prison”, Walshy Fire, and Jillionaire, known together as Major Lazer. Listen to your favorite reggaeton appropriations on slick vinyl with Major Lazer Essentials. Features all the big hits with vocals by Seanna Paul, Justin Bieber, and MØ.

The Beta Band
Heroes To Zeroes

With hindsight, Heroes To Zeroes by The Beta Band could be seen as their last attempt at hitting the big time, by their label, at least. The original recording of the album was rejected by the label who drafted in Radiohead super-producer, Nigel Godrich to mix the album. Ultimately, the band split up owing the label a wad of cash. This album is worth the admission price alone for opening track, Assessment.

Yelle
Safari Disco Club

A long-awaited re-issue for the second studio album from French pop starlet Yelle. Real name Julie Budet, she capitalised on her support slot on Katy Perry’s world tour at the end of the Noughties with the unabashed brilliance of Safari Disco Club, which gets the 2xLP deluxe treatment on Because Music.

The Beta Band
Hot Shots II

Hot Shots II was the second album (not counting the 3 EPs) by The Beta Band. It was the follow-up to their self-titled debut which the band described as ‘shit’ before its release - an opinion still held by Steve Mason. Hot Shots II, then, was very much a return to form. Features the singles Squares and Broke.

The Liminanas
I’ve Got Trouble In Mind Vol 2 (7-inch and Rare Stuff 2015 / 2018)

I've Got Trouble in Mind Vol. 2 is the sequel to 2014's Vol. 1. Here France's The Limiñanas offer a selection of unreleased tracks, rarities and more. It also features a remix by Anton Newcombe of the Peter Hook featuring 'The Gift'. For anyone who enjoys their combination of shoegaze, psych and being French.

The Beta Band
The Beta Band

The Beta Band’s eponymous debut LP turns twenty in 2019, so Because Music are preemptively reissuing the record. Though it wasn’t to everyone’s taste at the time it came out (including the band themselves), when heard now The Beta Band sounds ahead of the curve. The way these tracks run roughshod over the constraints of genre is sometimes good, sometimes less so, but certainly never dull. Its closest relatives are albums like Beck’s Odelay and The Avalanches' Since I Left You.

Django Django
Winter's Beach

At the start of 2018, London art-rockers Django Django released their third album, Marble Skies. By that time however, they were so consumed by inspiration that they were already in the studio working on some spiffy new tunes. The result of those sessions was Winter’s Beach, a six track EP. 12” and CD on Because Music.

Christine and The Queens
Chaleur Humaine (UK Edition)

Christine, with the support of her Queens, is making big splashes in France: she’s scarcely left their top 40 charts for years. What’s well cool is that she’s managed this great success without compromising the more unusual parts of her sound and style. On Chaleur Humaine, productions are frequently minimal, and always cool. Released in the UK by Because Music.

Parcels
Parcels

A further addition to the 'call your band literally anything' brigade is this hot young group from Australia who have since moved to ...oooh...let's guess....Berlin! They've already had a staggering 90 million streams across various platforms which I'm sure means something to someone out there. Be interesting to see how these Daft Punk collaborating disco pop lot get on in the real world.

Christine and The Queens
Chris

Héloïse Letissier is back with a new album as Christine and The Queens! The French singer-songwriter now gives us 'Chris' as the follow-up album to 2014's 'Chaleur Humaine' which took France by storm and sold shedloads (millions, actually) just about everywhere else; including here at your humble Norman, in an expanded UK version in 2016. As before, the record is available in both French and English versions. It looks like Héloïse is fast becoming an icon of our times. Available an English double LP, a French 2x LP, a double CD and a super huge boxset of all the versions and a poster! On Because Music.

Various
Shaolin Soul (Episode 4)

It is a testament to the ingenuity and talent of RZA’s Wu-Tang Clan productions that the world can eagerly take four whole volumes (so far!) of material he has sampled. Shaolin Soul (Episode 4) features funky business from the likes of The Dynamics, Freda Payne and Faze-O, among others: perfect for the Wu-Tang fan and / or the soul lover in your life.

The Beta Band
The Best of The Beta Band: Music

Who doesn’t like The Beta Band? No-one, that’s who. However, despite being universally loved, some of us - Norman Records™ description writers included - aren’t that familiar with the group’s output beyond ubiquitous early-2000s hit ‘Squares’. This also makes it a bit difficult for some of us to say what their music sounds like. Let's go with ... Super Furry Animals ... and ... Beck ... maybe The Avalanches too? Is that right? Either way, The Best Of The Beta Band will help plug the gap for those who’ve always wanted to know more about the Scottish group but have been afraid to ask. Comes backed with a live album.

Django Django
Marble Skies

7" of the title track from Django Django's third album, Marble Skies. This comes backed with a remix from CID RIM, an affiliate of the LuckyMe record label. CID RIM takes the high energy art rock of the band's original, and gives it the electronic edge and sheen his cohort of producers is known for.

Sons Of Raphael
A Nation Of Bloodsuckers

The first ever EP from Sons Of Raphael, the London duo who are not only sons, but also brothers. A Nation Of Bloodsuckers contains four tracks, and if you can look past the come-on-then-mate swagger of the cover artwork, you might find a lot to enjoy in the shoegaze-tinged widescreen indie-pop within.

Justice
Woman Worldwide

While touring Woman, Justice had to reconfigure the album to be suited to being played live. This process unearthed a different side to the album's tracks, one they have documented in the studio on Woman Worldwide. They didn't stop there though, and played some of their best known tracks in the same style as well.

Various
Shaolin Soul (Episode 1)

Delicious treats right here for serious fans of The Wu-Tang Clan and vintage funky soul alike. The Shaolin Soul series is a collection of some of the many many classic tunes that have been sampled for Wu-Tang Clan albums and related solo productions, generally dating from RZA’s primary production era. Volume 1 features cuts from Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight & The Pips and many more.

Diplo
California

Diplo, the super-producer (do we still use that term?) behind Major Lazer and many big pop smashes, provides the people with a six track EP of new material. Though it's just an EP, he’s managed to squeeze in eight guest artists into the tracklisting, including Santigold, Trippie Redd and Lil Yachty. 12” EP with CD version included.

Django Django
Surface To Air

Limited edition 12” from Django Django, featuring the single Surface To Air from their latest LP Marble Skies. The track features Self Esteem on vocals (Rebecca Taylor of Slow Club). Also including an instrumental version of the track and remixes from Lunice, Nightwave and a Body In The Thames Rise Up version. On Because Music.

Charlotte Gainsbourg
5:55

Charlotte Gainsbourg’s lounge folk sophomore album 5:55 gets the reissue treatment here on double vinyl. Wispy vocals meet with the staunch Frenchness of Air and the expansive production of Nigel Godrich to create a piece of work that sits out of step time and the weight of expectation. Out on 2LP vinyl from Because Music.

Molecule
- 22.7°C

With releases on Mille Feuilles, Underdog, and Sounds Around, french producer Molecule returns to Because Music for his latest full length -22.7°C. Spending well over a month in Greenland sampling what the Arctic has to offer he pours it into ambient and near transcendental techno, blurring the lines of synthesis and natural.

Django Django
Shake & Tremble

Shake & Tremble is the new single by Django Django. The London based art rockers are favourites of 6 Music’s Mark Riley. They have had huge success with their self titled debut album and their current long-player, Born Under Saturn from which Shake & Tremble is taken. Shake & Tremble is backed with the non-LP track Hold The Line.

The Liminanas
Shadow People

Shadow People is the fifth album proper by Perpignan’s hazy psych-pop duo The Liminanas. Their sound is harks back to Serge Gainsbourg’s work with female vocalists such as Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin. Needless to say, then, that they exude cool. 180g vinyl LP, in a gatefold sleeve, and CD on Because Music.

Django Django
Marble Skies

Art rockers Django Django have established themselves as one of Britain’s more original bands. From their unpigeonholable eponymous debut to it’s follow-up Born Under Saturn they have mashed genres together to make a sound all of their own. Their new album Marble Skies, like their debut, is a more lean affair than Born Under Saturn, but doesn’t fail to explore new territory.

Keny Arkana
L’Esquisse 3

Seventh solo album from French-Argentine rapper Kelly Arkana. The third in her L'Esquisse (meaning Sketching) series, this is Arkana flexing her creative clout in a slightly more relaxed mixtape-y format. Her flow is vicious and purposeful, matched by the album's beats, and, I can only assume, its lyrics.
  • Label(s):

Charlotte Gainsbourg
Rest

Rest is the fifth album by singer/songwriter, actress and offspring of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, Charlotte Gainsbourg. The album was produced by Ed Banger fella SebAstian who has also lent his talents to Frank Ocean among others. Paul McCartney, Connan Mockasin, Owen Pallet and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk make contributions too. Double LP and CD on Because.

Petite Fantome
Un Moment Pour Le Vent

Petit Fantome is what Pierre Loustaunau (who has played in Crane Angels, Francois & The Atlas Mountains gets up to when taking the reigns all for himself. Un moment Pour Le Vent bounces along like all your favourite experimental-leaning indie pop music, with a louche Frenchness that inevitably recalls Stereolab. Out on CD and vinyl, from Because Music.

Catherine Ringer
Chroniques et Fantaisies

Catherine Ringer is one of the premier performers of French language rock music, and Chroniques et fantaisies is her new 2017 album. This is her second album as a solo artist (following her time in Les Rita Mitsouko), and it's a sleek and accomplished listen. CD and double LP editions on Because Music, with the latter also including a CD.

Omar Souleyman
To Syria, With Love

Omar Souleyman's newest record goes straight to the dancefloor with rapturous delight. His collaborations with producer Hasan Alo are some of his most immense and captively hypnotic in years; named in passionate tribute to his home country, it's a sign of the immense music he was making before being thrown into the limelight.

Lido
Everything

Debut full length album from Peder Losnegård’s Lido moniker. A heavy and highly polished mix of pop, hip-hop, dance and electronica. Swinging from Efterklang esque light melodic pop to synth heavy trap beats a-la Rustie covered in and vocoder-ed raps. Featuring tracks with Jaden Smith. Vinyl on Because Music.

Klyne
Klyne

Ferdous Dehzad and Nick Klein release their debut full length as electronic pop two piece Klyne. Minimalist, synthetic and a warm soul at it’s pop covered core, the dutch duo have made a move on to Because music, fitting neatly alongside Metronomy. Danceable tracks with a softer reflective side.

Camille
Ouï

French pop singer Camille might be new to many, but with her debut being back in 2002 she is far from just a singer from Paris. Her tracks are always playful and performed with an almost childlike sense of innocent fun/silliness. Burps and raspberries are common place amongst serene harmonies and big drum percussion. Imagine Tom Waits and Bjork making a sweet pop record. On vinyl or CD via Because Music.

MMOTHS
Deu

Irish producer MMOTHS is in no hurry with his tracks: the title track on Deu takes its sweet time emerging from ambient haze into a lazy shuffle, backed with vocals so distant and whispy that this could almost be shoegaze. All of this is definitely a good thing of course: we like a producer whose big on atmosphere. 10” vinyl on Because Music.

Joakim
Samurai

French polymath Joakim dabbles in pretty much everything - running his label Tigersushi, designing the artwork, producing for bands (!!!, Zombie Zombie), remixing Robyn, Todd Terje amongst others, fashion design and contemporary art. Now he returns to his solo leftfield electro-pop productions with his sixth full length album Samurai. Quirky, catchy and unforgettable.

Little Dragon
Season High

A new full-length from Little Dragon, the alternative pop / R&B band from Sweden. Season High was produced by James Ford from Simian Mobile Disco, and his involvement really activates the electro-pop dance music powers that lurk within the band: check out ‘Sweet’ in particular for a tune that’ll spin all over the place come summer. On Because Music.

Electric Guest
Plural

Electric Guest have taken their sweet time working on their second album (the first came out way back in 2012), but the LA duo now have plenty to show for it. Plural is a cool, smooth, Danger Mouse-produced set of synthetic pop music with a summer evening aesthetic. It’s out on the Because Music label.

Klyne
Don't Stop / Water Flow

Klyne are a Dutch group making electro-pop that manages to be proper pop (e.g. you could play it on the radio and use it on stylish adverts) as well as proper electro (e.g. the synths bite just right). Their Don’t Stop / Water Flow EP contains four tracks of this, and is priced extremely reasonably too. 12” on Because Music.

Space Art
Play Back

Space Art are a notable example of French electronic pop music, active in the late 70’s. The obvious comparison is Jean-Michel Jarre (with whom they often worked), but Space Art had their own cosmic electro journey going on. Third album Play Back contains a grand three-part space suite, and a track called ‘Folkstone Hovercraft’. Vinyl reissue with poster and CD edition thrown in.

Cerrone
Red Lips

Marc Cerrone is a legendary disco producer from near Paris and has sold 30 million albums worldwide! At the age of 54 he has released this brand new album of disco funk moves to get yer feet a dancin' and your hips a swayin'. It uses all the old techniques that made his 70's work so lauded. Mr Oizo
All Wet

French electronic overlord known as Mr Oizo returns to Ed Banger with a few friends, including Boys Noize, Charli X, Peaches, Siriusmo as well as his much noticed collaboration with EDM superstar Skrillex, which is actually a really good old skool breakbeat tune. Solid stuff from a man with undeniable taste.

Justice
Woman

The French lords of electro-house circa 2007-9 are back after quite some years away. Woman has the classic feel of Justice’s much-loved earlier material, but they haven’t ignored what music has been getting up to in the intervening years. For one thing, there are a lot more vocals on Woman. CD and double LP editions, with an etching on the vinyl D side.

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou
Madjafalao

Almost 50 years into their existence, Benin’s Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou still sound brighter and fresher than you could possibly imagine. Madjafalao, which adds to a catalogue of more than 50 LPs, is a ten-track set of wonderful music: the kind of stuff it is impossible to resist. Released by Because Music.

Django Django
Born Under Saturn

Born Under Saturn is the second album (at last!) from Django Django. From the sound of ‘First Light’, the initial single, it seems that Django Django will be targeting summer happiness with these thirteen tracks. A blend of '60s harmonies and more contemporary synth-basslines turns out to be pretty fine combo. Out on Because Music.

Metronomy
Summer 08

Summer 08 by Metronomy recalls a time when musical polymath and mop-haired dreamboat Joe Mount was out night after night constantly drinking and playing gigs in dives to promote his forthcoming second album Nights Out. Mount remembers the time as being “Quite Manic”. Rather than move on, after all he has since made two albums of beautiful indie-pop, he has decided to reminisce about that time on record.

Metronomy
Pip Paine (Pay The £5000 You Owe)

The great thing about Metronomy is that their career is a journey....you don't quite get the same thing each time round. This, their remarkably titled debut, shows a sound miles away from the pleasant pop of 'Love Letters'. It's wild electronica with fuzzy guitar riffs and nary a vocal in sight. First time on vinyl from this previously much sought after artefact.

Seun Kuti + Egypt 80
From Africa With Fury: Rise

Seun Kuti, offspring of the grand overlord of afrobeat Fela himself, has this music flowing through his veins. He lets it out again on From Africa With Fury: Rise, his 2011 album with Egypt 80, which nails the unbeatable groove and stunning energy that the best of the genre ascends to. Oh, and it was produced by Brian Eno too! Double disc LP reissue on Because Music.

Molecule
60°43' Nord

60° 43’ Nord is a banging techno record, primed and ready for club deployment. But, more unusually, it is also a document of the underwater soundscape found underneath a fishing boat in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Yes, it can be both things! Nice explorative work here from Molecule, released by Because Music.

Cosmic Machine: The Sequel LP

A wide range of exciting experimental music is represented on Cosmic Machine’s The Sequel, which compiles some choice pieces of French space-jams from the 70’s and 80’s. Not many of the artists will be familiar to the average listener (Moon Birds? Arpadys?), but a few spins will reveal their forward-looking groove wonder. On Because Music.

The Liminanas
Malamore

The Liminanas are a French band, though you don’t need me to tell you that: just listen to those breath vocals! Malamore is their fourth album, and it finds the band very relaxed in their sonic niche: sunny, sexy, laid-back pop. It must be said, they do it well. Malamore is released by Because Music.

MMOTHS
Luneworks

Young Irish producer Jack Colleran, who goes under the name of MMOTHS, is highly capable with that smooth and mournful style of modern electronica: soulful vocals and cavernous synths over a steady beat. Luneworks is his debut full-length album, following a few years building up a reputation. CD release on Because Music.

Mind Enterprises
Idealist

Debut full-length from Mind Enterprises, the one-man modern synth-pop project of Andrea Tirrone. Grooves are the crucial core of these tracks, which are more than capable of leading the listener into some joyous nights of dancing if deployed right. Released by Because Music: the LP edition comes packaged with a CD.

Django Django
Pause Repeat

Taken from Django Django’s second album Born Under Saturn, Pause Repeat is a joyous, summer-filled pop song. Now it’s been pulled apart and reassembled by the likes of Debruit, Clap! Clap!, Bok Bok, and JD Twitch of Optimo. Expect some excellently percussive reimaginings. 12” vinyl available on Because Music.

Nicolas Godin
Contrepoint

After becoming bored with the huge success of AIR, Nicolas Godin has decided to treat us to his solo work. On Contrepoint, one of our favorite 90s French producers sheds a new light on the intricacies of Johann Sebastian Bach’s solo piano works. And, not surprisingly, the result is estranging and enticing.

Nicolas Godin
Widerstehe Doch Der Sünde

Nicholas Gödin is probably best known to you as half of French duo Air, but he’s been making music of his own as well. His stately electro-orchestral pop single Widerstehe Doch Der Sünde is presented here in its original form, as well as in a wide variety of remix versions by Justin K. Broadrick, Lapalux and Mmoths.

RATATAT
Magnifique

RATATAT, (whose wikipedia page helpfully informs us are “not to confused with Rattata”, the Pokemon) are a Brooklynite duo who bring grooves to their listeners via mostly instrumental, predominantly electronic means. With Magnifique, they throw more guitar into the mix than we have come to expect from the last few records. On Because Music.
