Ana Roxanne
~~~
Exploring themes of identity as an intersex artist, Los Angeles-based singer Ana Roxanne delivers an EP of songs with the enigmatic title ~~~. Her restful sound is distinctively modern, but has a throwback feel to the Eighties and Nineties R&B that inspired her as a youngster, evident in the haunting interpolation of Chaka Khan’s ‘I’m Every Woman’.
Bauhaus
The Bela Session
A reissue of perhaps Bauhaus’ most popular song, the majestic goth classic ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’. Now, this is a song arguably better known in a live version, but here we have the original 1979 studio recording, presented alongside four other tracks from the session, three of which have never seen the light of day till now. Reissue on Leaving Records.
Ami Dang
Parted Plains
Baltimore’s Ami Dang takes us on a futuristic new age odyssey with her new LP Parted Plains. This record fuses psychedelic ambiences, Dang’s highly expressive sitar playing and folktales from both the Middle East and South Asia. The resulting record is a hazy and highly evocative listen that evokes Laraaji, Mary Lattimore, High Places and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith.
Swan's Chamber
Swan's Chamber
The eponymous Swan's Chamber is the work of one multi-instrumentalist called Taylor Ross. I'm no expert in classical music, but to my ears Ross has created an album of cheery and pleasant chamber music using the guitar, piano and recorded. Whether or not this is for you, I think we can all agree it's wonderful music like this still gets made.
Cool Maritime
Sharing Waves
At last! a record you really can judge by its cover. Sharing Waves by Cool Maritime features electronic compositions inspired by the great outdoors. The Los Angeles based producer took the adventurous and expansive aspects being alone in the wild to inform his music. If you like Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Brian Eno or Kraftwerk you should probably give this a whirl. LP on Leaving Records.
Black Taffy
Elder Mantis
One of them there beat tapes here. Elder Mantis falls on the more melodic side of the beatmaker world - think Clams Casino rather than J Dilla - and his new LP Black Taffy is another lush listen from the MPC-bothering Texan. Anyone who’s had some fun with recent full-lengths from Black Milk and Budgie should give Black Taffy a go.
Sam Wilkes
WILKES
Jazzy Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist Sam Wilkes is ready with warm and beautifully produced debut full-length WILKES (I think you’re supposed to shout it) for Leaving Records. Wilkes himself performs most of the instruments throughout, but frequent collaborator Sam Gendel is at hand to lay down lots of sax. Other contributors include Christian Euman, Louis Cole, Brian Green and Etc.
Ras G
Raw Fruit Vol. 3-4
Ras G considers the material on the Raw Fruit series of beat-tapes as primarily “freestyle beats I make to smoke weed to”. Good to have a clearly defined function. However, these tracks aren’t just doped out: Ras’ interests in afrofuturism and free jazz (he is a contemporary of Flying Lotus after all) are also audibly apparent. Double LP on Leaving Records.
Ras G & The Afrikan Space Program
Stargate Music
Leaving Records (Matthewdavid, devonwho) provide a home for the latest LP by LA beat-smith Ras G. The Arrival is another sci-fi melting pot from the former Brainfeeder man. Plenty of cosmic and spiritual jazz influences rub shoulders with leftfield hip-hop takes and some Midwest house sounds. Will appeal to those who enjoyed the two Shabazz Palaces records that dropped in 2017. Out on 4/20.
Opio
Wounded Healer
New solo EP from west coast rapper Opio, who most known for his work in groups Souls Of Mischief, and Hieroglyphics. Comes with three takes on the title track featuring Homeboy Sandman interspersed with three versions of Galvanometer. FFO Stones Throw, Aesop Rock’s leftfield approaches to boom bap.
Ras G
The El-Aylien Tapes Vol. 1 & 2
Deep and heavy beat tracks from premium producer Ras G. Operating from the heart of the LA scene, G pulls many of his samples from the regions of free jazz, lending his tracks a strongly afrofuturistic vibe. The El-Aylien Tapes Vol. 1 & 2 is a strong set of groovy collages, released by Leaving Records.
The Cyclist
Bones In Motion
Fuzzy house musician The Cyclist continues to send his vibes over from Northern Ireland with 'Bones In Motion', his new record for Leaving Records and the follow-up to 'Dual Form' on that label. The record brings together two distinct aesthetics -- tape music and traditional electronica -- and sees what it's like when they intersect.
