Opeth
In Cauda Venenum

All rise for Opeth. The Swedish prog-metal titans make it a baker’s dozen of studio LPs with the extremely Opeth-titled In Cauda Venenum (translation: Poison In The Tale). Given that this lot have long ploughed their own furrow it would be silly to compare this music to anyone other than Opeth themselves, so let’s just say that if you’ve dug their wending rock epics before then you’ll likely be able to get behind In Cauda Venenum. One notable feature of In Cauda Venenum is that it comes in both English- and Swedish-language versions.

Behemoth
Messe Noire

The Polish black / death metallers aren’t ones to do things by halves. That’s certainly true of their acclaimed 2014 opus The Satanist, and also of this related live collection. Vinyl and CD versions contain a 2016 Warsaw concert featuring The Satanist performed in its entirely along with a further six tracks. The CD is accompanied by a choice of Blu-Ray or DVD containing 150 minute of spectacular, no-expenses-spared live footage, including the Warsaw show alongside a similar set from the Czech Brutal Assault festival and promo clips.

Earthless
Black Heaven

Earthless streamline their sound for their fourth LP. Black Heaven relies far less on the spacey prog-metal jams that have characterised their previous albums. Instead, four of the six tracks here are vocal-led metal songs in the vein of Black Sabbath. Lead single ‘Gifted By The Wind’ features riffs aplenty and some very soulful singing. A welcome change of pace.

Machine Head
Catharsis

Machine Head’s many years at the helm of what heavy metallic music can achieve puts them in a powerful position, in 2017, to batter us all with a withering wall of guitar brutality. Catharsis, with its unpleasant cover art, is a seventy-five minute slab of modern Machine Head. Available in several editions, some of which come with a DVD of a live show in 2015. On Nuclear Blast.

Blues Pills
Lady In Gold - Live in Paris

Blues Pills are a Swedish band who play a soulful brand of rock and blues. Their sound lands somewhere between ‘70s Dutch rock masters Shocking Blue and Beth Ditto’s Gossip. Following success in Europe (No.1 in Germany) with their second album, Lady In Gold, they’ve released Lady In Gold -  Live In Paris. This live performance lays out the band’s rock ‘n’ roll credentials for all to see.

Pallbearer
Heartless

Pallbearer benefit from their deep immersion in the many worlds of heavy rock and metal music, as they are able to bring a tangled mass of different stylistic influences to their music. Heartless is big and proggy and with clean vocals, but it also has thick metallish riffs and a little bit of alternative gnarliness going on. New album Heartless is a single CD / double LP release on Nuclear Blast.

Witchcraft
Nucleus

The old-school psychedelic rock produced by Witchcraft is pretty strong for a band originally just formed to cover Pentagram. 15 years in, Nucleus appears on Nuclear Blast (how neat), laden with riffs and wailing 1970’s guitar solos. Singer Magnus Pelander and his band have the sense of drama you want from this stuff too. CD or double LP.

Carcass
Surgical Steel (Complete Edition)

Carcass made their comeback in 2013 with Surgical Steel, a record that more than satisfied the extreme metal faithful. Stacks of thick riffs, blast beats and enraged demon howls. This Complete Edition reissue adds B-sides, Japanese rarities and unheard material. Double LP in a gatefold sleeve, on Nuclear Blast.

Graveyard
Innocence & Decadence

A Swedish reincarnation of late sixties psych rock formations, overflowing with raw energy and emotional, high-paced guitar solos. Graveyard is more lively than their name suggests, and their new album Innocence & Decadence showcases their pure power better than ever. And for a price like that you can't afford not to buy it.

The Vintage Caravan
Arrival

‘Arrival’ is the third album from Icelandic classic blues rock trio Vintage Caravan aka singer/guitarist Oskar Logi, bassist Alex Orn and drummer Gudjon Reynisson, due for release on the 15th of May on indie heavy metal label Nuclear Blast. Following their 2011, self titled debut and 2014 release ‘Voyage’, ‘Arrival’ marks the trio’s progression towards a heavier, darker and more melodic sound.

Carcass
Surgical Remission

'Surgical Remission' is the new EP from death metal growlers Carcass, supplementing their recent 'Surgical Steel' record -- because sometimes all that evil just overflows and you're left with a surplus. The band claim the EP ties up loose ends, in case you had any questions about 'Surgical Steel' and its metal debauchery.

Machine Head
Bloodstone & Diamonds

Machine Drum are probably sitting in a cabin with a bunch of weird staffs urging me to do the right thing right now, so I can safely say their newest record, 'Bloodstone & Diamonds' continues their never-ending thrash metal journeying. With lots of truly \m/ motifs -- "amulets", "evil", all that good stuff -- the record continues their no frills, totally aggressive assault on hearts and minds. And ears.

The Exploited
The Massacre - Special Edition

Formed in Edinburgh in 1980, The Exploited rode a wave of extreme ennui that imbued many in 1980s Britain. The Massacre is their sixth and most successful album and sees the band introducing elements of thrash metal to their undiluted, visceral punk rock. Available on limited edition 180g double vinyl LP and limited edition digipak CD.

Blues Pills
Blues Pills

With the idea to take soul music, combined with blues and rock ‘n’ roll and turn it into a new force of unimaginable energy, intensity and freshness, their blonde archangel and soul saviour Elin Larsson will guide you gently into a new world - the band’s empire of soulful rock. Elin’s powerful lyrics are full of emotions, her jazzy-soulful voice unfolding with outstanding beauty. All this is realised on the band’s stunning 10 track debut, produced by Don Alsterberg (Graveyard) and packaged in the incredible 60s style artwork of Marijke Koger-Dunham. Available as a deluxe digipack CD with bonus DVD (‘Live @ Hammer Of Doom 2013’), standard single disc CD, gatefold double vinyl picture disc, gatefold black vinyl 2LP and digital download.
