Golden Lab Vinyl, CD & tapes from this label at Norman Records
Mel O’Dubhshlaine, also known as Ocelocelot and as a member of the legendary Ashtray Navigations, produces remarkably bizarre music using a curious array of instruments including an Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI). Deformed Vowels uses aspects of an excellent recent live performance at Leeds’ Crater Lake festival, and is very good.
Formed in 2010, Gamecock are a two piece comprised of Stuart Arnot (Smear Campaign/Total Vermin Tapes) and Nick Mitchell (Chalaque/Golden Lab Records). ‘All Right, Hen?’ is a reissue put out by Golden Lab because neither of them had a copy of either the original cassette release on Gary War’s Fixed Identity or the subsequent Beartown reissue. Their music is a spontaneous, electronic, broken funk in the same gene pool as Skaters or Cabaret Voltaire.

In an attempt to ward off more deaths of really good people in 2016 strung out psychedelicists Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura have concocted a three hour 4LP extravaganza of psych musings on who we have lost in this bad year. The whole shebang was recorded in a church in Leeds and recorded by ace producer Richard Formby (Spacemen 3, Wild Beasts etc). Three cheers for the extravagance.
The Doozer’s songcraft is very direct, clearly not mediated by any concerns other than clear self-expression. Flying Bird is quietly special: not much stands out from these pretty tunes on first listen, but you’ll soon fall into its great depth and string-draped beauty. Released by Golden Lab as a 180g vinyl LP, limited to just 300 copies.
Tom Settle & Friends
Tom Settle (and indeed his Friends, comprising the likes of Jon Collin, Nick Mitchell and many more) lands a mighty double LP on the Golden Lab label. Old Wakes is a hell of a psych-folk trip, and if two LPs worth wasn’t enough for you, the first 100 copies come with a whole extra third LP of fresh material! So hurry!
Connie Acher is the name under which Melodie Provenzano writes songs (although it's hard to see why when her own name is so wonderful…). Primarily known as a painter, For Giving shows that Acher / Provenzano is a canny songwriter and musician as well, somehow managing to express a sense of the dull everyday without actually being dull.. Heavyweight vinyl release on Golden Lab.
Ten-piece psych-punk weirdos Burnt Hills are well known for scarcely ever venturing out of their basement. It does happen though, and Live at The Low Beat captures just such an occasion. With a full 6 guitars in the line-up, naturally things get heavy and cosmic very quickly. Limited edition of 250 LP copies, on Golden Lab.
Richard Youngs experimental take on music is exemplified on Varispeed Etudes - and album of two halves which is tied together by the varispeed pitch control used with reel-to-reel tapes. Side one shows his warped electronica experiments, over-laid with his distinctive english vocals whilst side two contains shorter, atonal and creeping soundscapes. Limited to 300 copies.
Irma Vep & The Royal House Of Boo Hoo Hoo
Imra Vep, or Edwin Stevens, is a talented crooner and musician from the land of ridiculously talented musicians that is also known as Manchester. Working with fifty acts since he moved to the city eight years ago, he has carved himself out a niche of weird, stylistic sounds that make up his rock records. Vinyl LP on Golden Lab.
Linda Sharrock In The Abyssity of The Grounds
Nice work Golden Lab: a massive triple LP set of all-new material from a voice as legendary as Linda Sharrock! Abyssity Of The Grounds / Gods finds Linda’s wails backed by biting free jazz explosions from her band The Antique Gods. High-energy stuff over the course of 2 hours. Released in a limited edition of 300 copies.
'In Glasgow' is a recording of sad rock duo Mad Nanna performing a show in Glasgow, which makes sense. More specifically, it captures their set for a Volcanic Tongue in-store, taking the drumming out of the equation for a purely acoustic set. Without the drums, Mad Nanna sound somewhat like a slowcore outfit who can't stop putting the breaks on.
Matt 'MV' Valentine / Nick Mitchell
This split single by Matt ‘MV’ Valentine and Nick Mitchell allows each artist to explore one-chord jams. Valentine’s side is an improvised piece bathed in wah-wah lead guitar and analogue synths. Mitchell’s side is upbeat with electric guitar arpeggiating around the one chord. 7” single with screen printed sleeve and artist photos, limited to 100 copies - you’d better be quick!
Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides
Pike / Portent
Another gorgeous LP from one of the most unique and compellingly-inscrutable acts around. Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides records and performances tend to feel like a ritual, summoning magic out of the air; this continues to be the case with the two side-long pieces on Pike / Portent. 250 copies only, on Golden Lab.
Fresh from a fantastic tour with Vibracathedral Orchestra, Death Shanties push out a new record on Golden Lab. Psychic Rome is a direct blast of free-jazz fire music, the duo of Alex Neilson (Trembling Bells) and Sybren Renema cooking up a furious brew. All recorded as a one-take live experience, limited to 100 LPs only.
Clifton Park, NY finds Manchester-based psychedelics Desmadrados Solados De Ventura making a stop-off on their US tour for a basement jam. A couple of locals (members of Burnt Hills) get involved too, bringing the guitar count to six. Two separate LPs taken from the same performance, on the Golden Lab label.
Limited edition of 300 on double vinyl presented in a super-heavyweight gatefold alongside a massive fold-out poster. Beautiful acoustic guitar and tape delay fuzzing psychedelic folk. Perfect lazy summer daze company from Matt Valentine also referred to as simply MV. With a whole host of guest musicians from Dinosaur Jr., Woods, and the Vibracathedral Orchestra.
Steve Baczkowski / Chris Corsano / Bill Nace
Exciting times for Golden Lab Records. 'Stolen Car' was recorded in January 2013 and performed by power trio Baczkowski, Corsano and Nace, featuring Flaherty napkin art on the front and back covers. The title track is a frenzied implosion of free jazz improvisation built upon layers of pensive, slightly unhinged sounds. Side B consists of three short, but equally wild compositions.
Ten years after its rumoured release on Thurston Moore and Byron Coley’s Ecstatic Yod Actuel Ass Run series, here is Various Past Moments by Scotch Broom Collective. Bob Fay, also known as the drummer in Sebadoh worked with bandmate Jason Lowenstein (Sebadoh), Conrad Capistran (TARP),and Mark Perretta (Deluxx/Deluxx Folk Implosion), or Scotch Broom Collective, on these recordings grabbed at impromptu gatherings. Vinyl on Golden Lab.
Psych folk and New Weird America connoisseur Josh Burkett used to play in noise band Vermonster, but also has a prolific solo career. 'Life Less Lost' was his first record and is now being reissued by Golden Lab on vinyl. Burkett's frenetic, impressively free-form and yet technical guitar playing is matched off with a typically modest vocal performance.

Marcia Bassett & Samara Lubelski
This collaboration comes from sound abstracters Marcia Bassett and Ssamara Lubelski, who previously collaborated for a release on Kye, the record label headed by musique concrete master Graham Lambkin. '110 Livingston' sees them making beautified arrangements out of treated guitar and droned-out violin compositions.
Manchester psychedelicists Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura return with their fourth album, the Philip K Dick-inspired (I presume) 'The Empire Never Ended', which features two lengthy tracks. On side A we've got a hazy sun-bleached psych jam, while on the B side something altogether noisier and more awkward happens - think Sonny Sharrock City Girls and you're somewhere close.
Heather Leigh brings the noise on this limited LP release on Golden Lab. The last few live Leigh performances I’ve seen were quite vocal-focused, but here she doubles down on the pedal steel with serious intensity. We’ve not heard pedal steel played like this since Leigh’s own Jailbreak sessions with Chris Corsano.
From Manchester comes this experimental musician Jon Collin, an adept guitarist and an expert in oddness. With multiple string discordancy leading to strangulation of tones then space in his tracks, it’s a bit like Jim O’Rourke or Loren Connors if that's your buzz. Transcendent cacophonies of sound. On vinyl.
Where is the acid? Oh, it appears Chalaque have already taken care of it all. Switching Center are two slice of deliciousness from the Mancunians. These psych-outs are a testament to Jerry Garcia, Jimi and the 60s as a whole. The lo-fi recordings only enhance the energy and will make you hair instantly lengthen, whilst a tie-dye bandana will appear - ready for the drop. Out on vinyl LP from Golden Lab.
