Neville Watson
The Midnight Orchard

Don’t Be Afraid have kept in touch with acid tech-houser Neville Watson, who returns to the label with his first LP in five years. Cover art’s a bit ‘Ghost in the Celt’, innit. He’s sounding more serious and pensive than before, but there’s nowt more boring than the dead-serious techno producer conceit - Watson knows this and ensures there’s always plenty of fun along the way.

Various (General Ludd, Herva, Nene H, Altered Natives)
DBA039.5

The excellent Don’t Be Afraid return with another EP of weapons-grade club tackle for their .5 series. A roster of General Ludd, Herva, Nene H and Altered Natives serve up techno four ways here. Ludd and Herva’s A-sides are dubby shapeshifters not dissimilar to the soundsystem stylings of labels like Idle Hands and Livity Sound. On the flip, H and Altered Natives forego subtlety altogether - ‘Retto’ and ‘Dancing Girl’ will tear the dancefloor a new one.

Differ-Ent
It's Good to Be Differ-Ent

‘It’s Good to Be Differ-Ent’ is the release from DJ Bone under his pseudo name ‘Differ-Ent’. This record has been described as a thunderous and paranoid collection of music that has been mastered to align with more new-wave experimental techno, rather than old school electro. This is available on triple Vinyl LP.

Karen Gwyer
Rembo

Fabulously creative spins on techno music from Karen Gwyer, back at last with a whole new full-length LP. Eight tracks, generally developed through going-with-the-flow in live performance, whip up a frenzy of pulsing rhythms, nodding to Detroit and weirder underground scenes alike. Rembo is out on Don’t Be Afraid.

rRoxymore
Thoughts Of An Introvert Pt. 2

rRoxymore’s third 12” for Don’t Be Afraid (Karen Gwyer, Semtek) is another installment in her Thoughts Of An Introvert series. Part 2 displays a bit more zip than the first release, bringing new sounds and aesthetics into the producer's already rather leftfield techno takes. ‘Run … Feet’, for instance, is a zany double-time jam that has a little DJ Paypal in it.

The Room Below
Healing Scaphoids

The Room Below titled this lovely little EP after an unfortunate pair of London cycling injuries. Healing Scaphoids was thus created during a period of recovery, which lends a thoughtful, slightly wonky flavour to these tracks that would make them an interesting addition to any club set. 12” on Don’t Be Afraid.

Karen Gwyer
Rembo Remixes

After her debut album blew the competition out of the water, Karen Gwyer gets the remix treatment from an assortment of sonic travellers with the same spit and sawdust approach to machine manipulation. Ron Morelli sounds especially ferocious on his version of “He’s Been Teaching Me How To Drive”, while E. Myers pings Chicago jack into a frenetic retro future while duffing up "It's Not Worth The Bother".

Karen Gwyer / Raven Cru / Dukwa / Lily
DBA024.5

This 4-track multi-artist 12” on Don’t Be Afraid is a great selection, with label favourite Lily on one end and a first ever appearance on record from Raven Kru on the other. However, the pick of the crop might just have to be Karen Gwyer, whose enveloping techno sound-universe swirls pleasingly around the listener / dancer.

Jayson Wynters
Industrial Espionage

Four track techno EP from Birmingham's Jayson Wynters. Wynter's techno darts and weaves, it knows when to sprint and when to take a break. Industrial Sabotage is an apt name then, it breaks up the repetition and monotony in order to aim for something higher. Released on the lovely Don't Be Afraid.

Ikonika
Oral Suspension

It’s a good year for Ikonika fans: as well as the full-length LP Distractions that we all enjoyed earlier this year, we also now have new track Oral Suspension and a remix of same by Big Strick! This track is classic Ikonika, rolling offbeat rhythms propping up glassy synths with more than a touch of 80’s video game aesthetics to them. Lovely stuff. 10” on Don’t Be Afraid.

Tr One
A Month Has Passed

A four-track 12” from the Carlow-based duo of Dean Feeney and Eddie Reynolds, who’ve released a bunch of EPs over the last decade on labels such as Apartment and POGO Recordings. The Irish pair take inspiration from Detroit, Chicago and the UK bass scene. Closing track Road to the Sea has a very Ñaka Ñaka vibe, while the title track overlays smooth Detroit techno with a marimba-like melody.

rRoxymore
Thoughts Of An Introvert Pt. 1

rRoxymore delivers three mid-length tracks on this here 12” EP for Don’t Be Afraid. Thoughts of an Introvert, Pt. 1 is indeed kind of introverted in its production style, with a rolling, pulsating electronic landscape that seems to be driving at something deep within. Still, could definitely get moving to those drums.

Tyler Dancer
Resisting In The Darkness

Don’t Be Afraid welcome an up and coming talent from Detroit in the shape of Tyler Dancer, who was recently spotted working the buttons with the legendary Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir on a remix of Funkadelic. This is gritty outboard techno loaded with personality and flair, all bloated kicks and freaky synths for those who like their parties dark and decadent, but it’s also immensely fun as well.

Jason Fine
Moonscapes EP

Moonscape EP is Jason Fine’s debut release on Don’t Be Afraid and it’s a stellar addition to the DBA catalogue. The 4-track EP moves from low-fi beats to luscious flowing instrumentation and glistening synths - the perfect soundtrack to round off the night and dream of the skies. A 12" vinyl EP

Kemback
Carduelis

Geoff Wright - otherwise known as Kemback - occupies himself with many different professions (violinist, teacher, producer, to name a few). Kemback's history is fairly strong; having released records with features from people like DJ Bone, and recording with labels like Omena Records, he has built quite a name for himself. This vinyl is another taste into the intricate and eclectic work from a man as special as Kemback.

Semtek
Four Dubs EP

Semtek runs the Don’t Be Afraid label, and yet it's been half a decade since they last landed their own tracks on the imprint. Thats partly down to an admirable focus on curation, and partly (it seems) down to high professional standards: Four Dubs’ four tracks are totally solid works of dancefloor-dominating house. 12” EP.

Karen Gwyer
Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase

Karen Gwyer also seems to be pulled in two different directions. Sometimes she makes cerebral melodic electronic pieces with droney touches, other times (e.g. live), she blasts out ecstatic acid techno. Both forms of Gwyer are fantastic, and this 12” happily combines them. Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase is out on Don’t Be Afraid.

MGUN
Gentium

Detroit man Manuel Gonzales has been producing the material that appears on Gentium, which appears under his MGUN moniker, since 2007. Most of it is bounced live onto cassette: Gonzales believes in capturing the moment of creation as it occurs. Double LP of cutting techno / electro, on Don’t Be Afraid.

Eecee
Cosmic Trigger

Here we have a cassette from Eecee in the form of Cosmic Trigger, an experimental look into electronica which blends the sublime and blissful with the eerie and dark. It could be the soundtrack to a thrill set in a Soviet spacecraft or some dank submarine. There’s a sense of foreboding throughout and the ‘80s synths give it a feel of the future as seen from the 1980s.

CEOL
The Light

Dom Cappello (of Hutton Drive fame) and Lee Duncan (also known as Leeon) are the production duo behind CEOL, coming together to mystify and further explore their minimal techno inclinations. 'The Light' is being released on Don't Be Afraid, and shows off bright synth work, sparkling production and a disciplined approach to dropping the beat. These tracks climax patiently and potently.
