FOF10: Friends of Friends at 10

Having been dedicated to releasing the best in local indie and electronica since 2009, Los Angeles independent outlet Friends Of Friends releases a special picture disc to commemorate its 10th anniversary. Side one consists of some catalogue highlights from Shlohmo, Baths, Perera Elsewhere, Somni and Indian Wells (never released on vinyl before, btw) while the reverse features artists covering FOF catalogue tracks, plus some exclusive newbies!

Clive Tanaka y su Orquesta
Pre-Sunrise Authority

The first new album in almost a decade from the reclusive musician Clive Tanaka, Pre-Sunrise Authority is designed for long journeys and inspired by the friendships that make those kinds of journeys bearable. The eight tracks play like a jumble of influences drawn from different times, places and feelings.

Deru
Torn In Two

LA label Friends Of Friends (Shlohmo, Gun Selectah) release an LP of microtonal experiments from Deru. As one might expect from an album where the primary sound artefacts are discordant drones, Torn In Two isn’t exactly easy listening. Deru’s experience of composing for the silver screen - he worked on Avatar: The Last Airbender doncha know - means he approaches many of the pieces here with a cinematic ear for space and detail. This makes many of the cuts sound like a mix of György Ligeti and something from the Blade Runner soundtrack.

Shlohmo
The End

New full-length album from LA beat scene producer Shlohmo, his first since 2015. It is titled The End, a fairly grand title, but that’s because it's kind of about the apocalypse. But don’t worry too much, it's about the apocalypse in a chill way. Plenty of gorgeous hazy soundscapes as well as intense moments and sleek chunky beatwork. Out on Friends of Friends.

Shlohmo
Vacation

Shlohmo’s 2012 EP Vacation has been long gone for a long time, but Mr Shlo has kindly taken pity on those who missed out with this new repress, on the Friends of Friends label. Vacation includes three original tracks, as well as four remixes of other artists in an LA Beat Scene style, including Airhead and Nicolas Jaar. Pick it up this time!

Sweatson Klank
Fine Lines

We all wish we could be called Sweatson Klank, but unfortunately, there can be only one. This Sweatson Klank is a Los Angeles producer who melds hip-hop, future R&B and House whilst being nifty enough to balance the necessary muscular punch with a soulful emotional tug. Fine Lines doesn’t fit into any particular pigeonhole, but will fit nicely on your turntable. LP on Friends of Friends.

Groundislava
Groundislava

Groundislava, from the same corner of town as DEEJ and Schlomo, surfed in on the wave of mainstream acceptance of nerddom in general and chiptune in particular. His self-titled debut ducked the radar on its release, but became a cult classic over time and is now finally up for rerelease. The upbeat 8-bit songs still hold strong and make for a great retro time-piece.

M.O.O.N.
Clinically Blasé

Whilst its tasty selection of rhythms and groove's are firmly rooted in a retro glut of dancefloor-ready genre's, M.O.O.N's blend amounts to a much more forward thinking method. On this occasion, Clinically Blase is a 10-track slice of synth-heavy and jazz-chord-fuelled expedition.
