Martin Rude & Jakob Skøtt Duo
The Dichotomy of Control

A second album in 2020 alone for Sun River’s Martin Rude and Causa Sui drummer Jakob Skøtt. Following the release of ‘The Discipline of Assent’ an album which was stitched together from first-takes and improvs, ‘The Dichotomy of Control’, recorded in July at Skøtt’s bandmate Jonas Munk’s studio, is perhaps more planned but is a no less funky take on spiritualised soul-jazz.

Causa Sui
Szabodelico

'Szabodelico' is the sixth album by Causa Sui, the Danish psych-rockers led by Jonas Munk. With each release the band look to progress their sound, and this one is no exception. It took form through some loose, high-spirited jams before Munk mixed and added a few - but not too many - overdubs to make the final album.

Brian Ellis Group
Escondido Sessions

Don’t hear so much jazz-rock around these days do we? Well hear it now, with Brian Ellis and his Group. The Escondido Sessions grounds flighty jazz improvisations with a firmly rock rhythm section. Saxophones, but also guitar, organ and Moog synth make up the palette of this record. Pretty strong stuff, on El Paraiso Records.

Martin Rude & Jakob Skøtt Duo
The Discipline of Assent

Formed from hours of first-take, improvised jams laid down in a remarkable session back in early March 2020, The Disciple of Assent sees Sun River musician Martin Rude work with Causa Sui percussionist Jakob Skøtt gleefully colour outside the lines to make something that lies between jazz, psychedelia and folk.

Mythic Sunship
Another Shape Of Psychedelic Music

Mythic Sunship work in a doom-psych context, but the presence of a saxophone, as well as a free-jazz mindset, takes their work into wider territory. Another Shape Of Psychedelic Music is just that, being a swirling, metamorphosing beast that grooves and throbs and riffs and blasts. Not just another psych group you understand. Out on El Paraiso Records.

Jakob Skott
All The Colours Of The Dust

Jakob Skott drums in the Danish group Causa Sui, but also has a solo concern where he sets his drums off against his synthesiser collection. All The Colours Of The Dust is his third record of this, and is real nice and groovy, the drums and synths darting in and out of one another for a technicolour experience. On El Paraiso Records.

Causa Sui
Return To Sky

Spaced-out krautrock impressions from Causa Sui. They bring the tight loops and grooves of a minimal rock group, but add in some slowed down stoner freak-outs. Return to Sky on El Paraiso Records is unapologetically psychedelic, full of heavy riffing, massive drums and surreal breakdowns that sound like something borrowed from Ennio Morricone.

Causa Sui
Vibraciones Doradas

Danish psych rock stoners, Causa Sui are rounding off their sort-of-trilogy of albums with a mini album, Vibraciones Doradas, Spanish for Golden Vibrations. It follows on from 2013’s Euporie Tide and 2016’s Return To The Sky. Their influences range from fusion-era Miles Davis, Krautrock groups such as Can and Popol Vuh, the dusty blues rock of The Allman Brothers and Aussie psych rockers Tame Impala.

Fra Det Onde
Feat. the Legendary Emil Nikolaisen

Norwegian ‘supergroup’ Fra Det Onde is a meeting of three of the country’s most skilled musicians operating in freeform, improvised fashion - Erik Kimestad Pedersen on trumpet, Exoterm’s Rune Nergaard on bass and Bigbang’s Olaf Olsen on drums. On Feat. the Legendary Emil Nikolaisen, they’re joined by icon(oclast)ic Serena Maneesh member Emil Nikolaisen behind the production desk.

Ellis/Munk Ensemble
San Diego Sessions

San Diego Sessions by the Ellis/Munk Ensemble sees Danish musician Jonas Munk (of Causa Sui) and the Californian city’s own Brian Ellis, whose work is steeped in jazz and psychedelia, recording together. Over seven loose-limbed tracks, the duo recall the high-points of psychedelic rock and jazz fusion from years gone by.

Kanaan
Double Sun

Kanaan are a psychedelic rock trio from Oslo. Double Sun is their second proper studio album, but comes hot on the heels of Odense Sessions which they recorded with Jonas Munk. This album sees them playing a broad interpretation of psychedelic rock that includes post-rock and jazz. A dynamic combination of fuzz, beats and soundscapes.

Jonas Munk & Nicklas Sørensen
Always Already Here

Always Already Here is a collaboration between Danish electronic musician, Jonas Munk & Guitarist, Nicklas Sørensen. The artists give their takes on modern and retro electronica, psychedelia and the minimalism of La Monte Young, Steve Reich and Terry Riley. The tracks feature synths and guitars intertwining in an experimental yet accessible fashion.

Mythic Sunship
Changing Shapes

Just in case it hadn’t clicked, of course Mythic Sunship are a psych-rock band. They play fuzzed-out psych with songs that are as long as the distance between here and their hometown of Copenhagen. On their last album they found themselves in the world of spacerock-meets-free jazz - an undoubtedly difficult place in which to win new fans, but they’ve stuck to their guns and continued in the same vein for their latest LP Changing Shapes. I suggest you climb aboard the Mythic Sunship and enjoy the ride.

Causa Sui
Euporie Tide

Danish psych-rockers, Causa Sui, have built a loyal fan base since 2005. This is due to some sensational live shows and praise from the like of Arch Drude, Julian Cope, and Uncut and Mojo magazines. Their sound draws on influences as widespread as electric-era Miles Davis, Allman Brothers Band and Can. Euporie Tide is their third album and was originally released in 2013.
  • CD (EPR013CD)

Monarch
Beyond The Blue Sky

Monarch are one of the latest bands to rise up from the very productive San Diego heavy psych, prog and free rock scene. Their take on psych rock is a little different as they blend the dueling guitar solos of the Allman Brothers with synths and saxophone. This album, Beyond The Blue Sky is the follow-up to their 2016 debut, Two Isles.

Futuropaco
Futuropaco

One man bands aren't what they used to be. Futuropaco is Justin Pinkerton, previously of Thrill Jockey psych-rockers Golden Void, and it's only him you'll hear on this debut. Pinkerton is also a composer of library and commercial music, so you can think of Futuropaco as him bringing his two sides together.

Causa Sui
Live in Copenhagen

Oh how I bet our Ian wishes he could have been there. Two performances from the approaching legendary Euro-kraut group Causa Sui at release parties for albums in 2013 and 2016. As they rarely play live this is the opportunity to catch them in their element, stretching and twisting their songs out of all recognition.

Chicago Odense Ensemble
Chicago Odense Ensemble

Chicago Odense Ensemble was a special collaboration between Causa Sui's Jonas Munk and Jakob Skøtt and members of Tortoise and Isotope217 recorded in 2008. Those long and varied sessions were then edited down to create a kind of dubby jazz fusion. The star of the show is Rob Mazurek who leads the way with the wonderfully pure timbre of his cornet. On El Paraiso Records.

Causa Sui
Free Ride

Free Ride by Causa Sui is a modern psych-rock classic that has been out of print for ten years out of the eleven that it’s been alive. It was the second album by the Danish outfit who feature Jonas Munk, who remastered this for reissue, among their ranks. The album rocks like a lorry full of bricks in a similar way to Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Mudhoney and Kyuss but also showcases the more contemplative side of psychedelia on the title track.  Double vinyl LP or CD with 20-minute live bonus track on El Paraiso Records.

Jonas Munk
Absorb / Fabric / Cascade

From one of Causa Sui’s finest, another solo release - Absorb / Fabric / Cascade is a three song 37-minute exploration into the world between drone and rock. Jonas Munk’s previous solo releases have proven this man’s capabilities, and we are eager to find out what his next step will be. There’s only 500 going around, so get your hands on your own quick!

Landing
Bells In New Towns

Landing have been at it for twenty years but 'Bells in New Towns' proves that they are still as strong as ever. They play a textured form of post rock, motorik kraut and blissed out shoegaze that is lush and shimmering bringing to mind other long running US outfits such as Yo La Tengo and Bardo Pond.

Nicklas Sørensen
Solo 2

Nicklas Sørensen is the guitarist of band Papir, but there’s plenty more to him than that. He also produces solo work, and guess what? Solo 2 contains just that. Sørensen has plugged his guitar into the lineage of gorgeous melodic minimal kosmische music, using electronics and effects to expand his guitar into a luscious creator of sound environments. Solo 2 is released by El Paraiso Records.

Papir
Live at Roadburn

‘Live At Roadburn’ is Papir’s fifth full length album and first ever live album. Known and loved for their awe inspiring live performances and intense live studio albums, it makes perfect sense for these cosmic, Danish stoner rockers to produce a live album that captures their explosive blend of post rock drone, pounding bass lines, intricate math rock drumming and uplifting, effects-heavy guitar wailing.

Videodrones
Nattens Hævn

The Danish duo of Videodrones release their 2nd album in the form of ‘Nattens Hævn’, which delves even further into their realm of improvised synth. Taking inspiration from many Italian composers like Riz Ortolani and others, this new album puts a new found insanity on their unique style of music. ’Nattens Hævn’ wriggles as it plays, the album fluctuates with emotions, and will you draw you in to their world of madness.

Astral TV
Crystal Shores

Rasmus Rasmussen usually plays all the electronic trinkets keeping Causau Sui proggified, acting as their warlock of the synth and keeping things adequately weird. Along with Keith Canisius they make an aging, dusty sound in tribute to the kosmische sound of old, which has found new life in the droning realms of Steve Hauschildt and Mind Over Mirrors. Crystal Shores does much the same in implying invisible rhythm in stilled environments.

Black Cube Marriage
Astral Cube

Black Cube Marriage is a mighty Rob Mazurek ensemble formed out various members of Marriage, Rob’s famed Sao Paolo Underground, and extra players like Steve Jansen. With eleven people on board, the group can summon up the cosmic freedom of the Sun Ra Arkestra of some of Pharoah Sanders’ groups, but the large quantities of electronics involved take things someplace new. Astral Cube is released by El Paraiso Records.

Monarch
Two Isles

Monarch have been hanging out in sunny San Diego for so long now that they can’t help but sound lounged-out and relaxed. Their debut album Two Isles is a psych-tinged, slightly-stoned rock record that feels in no hurry to go anywhere too soon: each song is comfortable just doing it’s cool groovy thing. It’s enough to make you jealous of all these Californians… On El Paraiso Records.

Nicklas Sorensen
Solo

Nicklas Sørensen, of Papir, strikes out on his own for the first time, with Solo (each track is also named Solo). Given the chance to just sit down with his guitar and make it happen, he follows some wonderful minimal patterns, establishing a healthy ambient feel for this listener. Released by El Paraiso Records.

Shiggajon
Sela

Danish collective Shiggajon deal in multi-faceted cacophony of the Coltrane variety. Sela takes a longform Eastern-tinged sound that’s infused with a spiritual essence. Call it ritual jazz or improv drone it’s an expansive, escapist journey with cathartic, euphoric results. Out on vinyl LP from El Paraiso Records.

Jakob Skott
Taurus Rising + Amor Fati

A fresh mango of positivity from Jakob Skott. Taurus Rising + Amor Fati is a double release from this single man project. You need to understand his love of synths, I mean, he's really, really, really into synths - and drums. Lots of major scale madness, sounding like a mix between Neu!, Holy Fuck and Lightning Bolt's more elated moments. Out on CD from El Paraiso Records.
