Jarboe
Illusory

A figurehead for avant-garde music going back decades as a former long-time member of the legendary Swans, Jarboe presents her 33rd solo album ‘Illusory’. A dark, dense and fog-like atmosphere of confusion and unknowing is created, yet Jarboe’s unique voice pierces it and guides the listener by the hand.

Jozef Van Wissem
Ex Mortis

Inspired by ‘The Book of Gostlye Grace’, a 13th century tome written by German nuns, experimental lute player and composer Jozef Van Wissem releases another new album titled Ex Mortis (or ‘from death’). Performed with a quasi-religious devotion and with the help of former long-time Swans member Jarboe, it’s a meditative and trance-like collection.

Jozef Van Wissem
We Adore You, You Have No Name

‘The Lute Guy’ and minimalist composer, Jozef Van Wissem, returns with a new album, We Adore You, You Have No Name. It is, perhaps unsurprisingly, inspired by a bunch of stuff from the 16th century. One of those things is Caravaggio’s painting, The Lute Player. He was commissioned to perform at the party celebrating the restoration of the original painting. LP and CD on Consouling Sounds.

Ekca Liena
Gravity and Grace

Public House Recordings alumni Ecka Liena offer their follow-up to Graduals in Gravity and Grace, another gorgeous soundtrack to shadows and solitude. Utilising non-musical sound as a structuring device, this record houses some of the band's most ambitious ideas to date. Come for the immense, dramatic soundscapes and stay for the never-ending melancholy.

Jozef Van Wissem
Nobody Living Can Ever Make Me Turn Back

Jozef Van Wissem, with his customised lute, can always be relied upon to deliver a gothically romantic atmosphere with his compositions, and Nobody Living Can Ever Make Me Turn Back (with track titles that include ‘The Empty Cup Of Suffering’ and ‘Out Bones Lie Scattered Before The Pit’) fully delivers. More premium dark lute musings from Van Wissem, on Consouling Sounds.

IIVII
Invasion

Josh Graham is an all-rounder, dipping toes in all pies. Previously a guitarist in Red Sparrowes, visual artist for Neurosis and currently in Battle Of Mice and A Storm Of Light. Invasion is his second solo outing as IIVII which is dark ambient seems set to a post apocalyptic alternate future. Think John Carpenter injected with Graham’s post metal influences.

Treha Sektori
Severh Sehen

French dark ambient producer Treha Sektori released Severh Sehenh in 2014 on a small number of CDs. Consouling Sounds have now put it on vinyl for the first time. One 35 minute track of brooding and overbearing bleak soundscapes that Bohren und der Club of Gore would craft if they did ambient. FFO Deaf Center.

Dead Neanderthals
Craters

Dead Neanderthals are everyone’s favourite free-jazz-gone-grindcore outfit, generally tending towards relentless sax / drums thunderstorms. Craters is still an intense ride, but it adds in a third member / instrument in the form of Maxime Petit’s bass guitar. They let the atmospheres simmer and grow on this one, without losing their essential Neanderthal bite. LP / CD release on Consouling Sounds.

Wiegedood
De Doden Hebben Het Goed II

De Doden Hebben Het Goed II by Wiegedood picks up where the band left off with their critically acclaimed debut, blending the speed and technical intensity of thrash with black metal atmospherics. On this vinyl LP from Consouling Sounds punishing waves of noise are built from complex riffing and subtle changes in tone.

Aidan Baker & Tomas Järmyr
Werl

Ex-Nadja heavy droner Aidan Baker and explorative drummer Tomas Järmyr whipped up some sonic rituals in the studio recently, and the results stretch across two CDs here. Werl is real expansive, the two musicians dancing around one another in passages that alternate between droning free sound and locked-in rhythmic attack. Double CD on Consouling Sounds.

Syndrome
Forever And A Day

Mathieu Vandekerckhove plays in the group Amenra, but he also has a lonely and intimate solo project: Syndrome. Forever And A Day is like post-rock music with the grand climaxes taken out and replaced with an uneasy droning ambient aesthetic. It feels bleak, but deep down it could be somewhat comforting. Out on Consouling Sounds.

Triple Sun
The City Lies In Ruins

Triple Sun are a trio. I don’t think of gassy, hot suns but the music they make does seem rather out of this world so, maybe. On The City Lies in Ruins the trio bring a combination of minimalism and electronics with rock guitar to create a sinister, ever building album of deep drone and post-rock.

Jozef Van Wissem
When Shall This Bright Day Begin

The wild man of the lute is back with When Shall This Bright Day Begin on the Consouling Sounds label. Jozef Van Wissem has built a reputation as a technically skilled and eccentric improviser, borrowing from experimental music, folk and pre-twentieth century classical forms. On this CD or vinyl LP Van Wissem ventures into darker territory, with a bleak and powerful collection of songs.

Harlowe
Harlowe

Harlowe is a new collaboration of CHVE (the solo project of Colin H. Van Eeckhout of Amenra), Lucy Ann Kinsella and members of Hessian and Oathbreaker. Together they’ve produced a mournful collection of dark folk music that hangs like a black cloud over the landscape. 300 copies only of the 10” vinyl edition. On Consouling Sounds.

CHVE / Nate Hall
Split

CHVE is the solo project of Colin H. Van Eeckhout, the frontman of Amenra. To accompany his recent voice and hurdy-gurdy triumph RASA, Consouling Sounds are reissuing his very first solo track, from 2012, when he was dabbling with minimalist folk. 7” vinyl, with a solo track from Nate Hall on the flip.

CHVE
RASA

CHVE is the solo project of Colin H. Van Eeckhout, the frontman of Amenra. For RASA he restricts himself to using only voice and hurdy-gurdy: a bold move and immense restriction, but one that has firmly paid off. Thick drones are coaxed from his instrument, and processed into cavernous sonic chambers. Released by Consouling Sounds.

Thisquietarmy
Anthems For Catharsis

CD or 12” vinyl LP on Consouling sounds. Canada’s Thisquietarmy seems to have a release every couple of months, all based around guitar improvisations. Layer upon layer of guitar textures builds into a palette that can be equally dark and cathartic. For fans of Jesu, Deafheaven, Wolves in the Throne Room.

Dirk Serries & Rutger Zuydervelt
Buoyant

Rutger Zuyderveldt, minimal drone expert extraordinaire, also known as Machinefabriek and Piiptsjilling, once again teaming up with a crazy sound explorer: this time it's Dirk Serries, known for Microphonics. Together they have created Buoyant, four tracks have that deep, all-encompassing heavy slowness we’ve come to love.
