Once you get past the pretty horrendous artwork you’ll find that Cathedral’s 2006 LP The Garden Of Unearthly Delights is another doom metal masterpiece from Lee Dorrian and company. The fantastic production from Warren Riker balances out the band’s bottom-heavy riffage with Dorrian's super-clear vocal takes. There are some cracking choruses on this thing too.
An entirely crucial foundational text of black metal: the first album by Mayhem! With a release history clouded with murders and suicides (how trve kvlt can you get?), De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas still stands as a mighty blast of icy Norwegian power. The line-up for the album’s recording includes both Attila Csihar (later working with Sunn O)))) and Varg Vikernes of Burzum. Vinyl reissue on Back on Black.
Reissue of Deathcrush, the debut EP of Norwegian black metal legends Mayhem and apparently the first studio release of any band in the scene. It’s a quick and speedy blast of a record, featuring a surprising opening in the form of a version of a Conrad Schnitzler piece.... followed shortly afterwards by a song called ‘Chainsaw Gutsfuck’. Vinyl reissue on Back On Black.
