Neu!
75

Not the title of a late period Adele record (haven't we done that joke before?) but the third studio album by kraut-rock greats Neu. The duo couldn't decide which direction to go in so they did the natural thing and split the record in two. The first side showcases Neu's earlier repetitive style whilst the B side heads into more ambient territories. A brilliant band who influenced everyone... I'm particularly looking at you Stereolab.

Sol Seppy
The Bells Of 1 2

Sol Seppy is Sophie Michalitsianos - an English singer/songwriter who grew up in Australia before moving to the states. She contributed to the Sparklehorse albums It’s A Wonderful Life and Good Morning Spider. The Bells of 1 2 is her debut album, originally released in 2006. The influence of Sparklehorse on the album is clear. Comparisons have also been made with Mazzy Star and Cocteau Twins.

Michael Rother
Sterntaler

Grönland are currently in the middle of a Michael Rother reissue programme. 1978’s Sterntaler, the second solo LP released by the Neu!/Harmonia hombre, is one of those that has made the cut. As you might expect this is classique Motorik Krautrock, full of rumbling basslines and chirruping synthesisers.

Michael Rother
Flammende Herzen

There was great anticipation around the release of Flammende Herzen when it first emerged in 1977. People were eager to see what Michael Rother would get up to after Neu! had disbanded, and the inclusion of Can’s Jaki Liebezeit also added to the intrigue. The resulting record didn’t disappoint, hitting big with a combination of proggy composition, Krautrock invention and Motorik rhythm.

Michael Rother
Fernwärme

Michael Rother’s 1982 LP Fernwärme stands out in the Neu!/Harmonia fellow’s catalogue for a couple of reasons - it was the first album Rother recorded without the aid of Conny Plank, and also saw Rother basing his compositions around the drumming of Can’s Jaki Liebezeit for the first time in several years. Despite having these new elements in play, the sound of Fernwärme doesn’t differ too much from Rother’s contemporaneous output. Think Jean-Michel Jarre with a Motorik beat.

Michael Rother
Katzenmusik

Katzenmusik, the third solo LP from Michael Rother, is proggy Krautrock par excellence. I mean, you’d expect nothing less from someone who was a founding member of both Neu! and Harmonia, would you? There are some nice Americana/country influences mixed in here too. Katzenmusik is also notable for being the last record Rother made with long-time collaborator Conny Plank as producer.

Holger Czukay
Cinema

Massive big box set of material from the legendary Can experimenter Holger Czukay containing lashings of his tape splicing work plus collaborations with the likes of Jaki Liebezeit and Cluster & Eno. Contains unreleased and rare material plus a DVD, 36 page booklet and a download code.

Holger Czukay
Radio Wave Surfer

Holger Czukay, core member of the perennially loved German experimental group Can, went on to be a productive maker of weird and wonderful pop. Among his solo albums is Radio Wave Surfer, a delightful 1991 release that was all recorded live, in studios and at concerts, with only one stereo mic: none of that Can studio trickery here! Reissued now by Grönland.

D.A.F.
DAS IST DAF

Gabi Delgado and Robert Görl fronted Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft (D.A.F.) were an experimental electronic/electro/industrial group active from 1979 until the late 80s, proclaiming they had fulfilled the concept. For fans of Kraftwerk, Laibach etc. this collection houses four albums with a bonus vinyl of remixes (including Boys Noize and Giorgio Moroder) as well as two unreleased tracks, and a load of goodies.

Holger Czukay
Der Osten Ist Rot

Holger Czukay, core member of the crucial German experimental group Can, went on to produce a considerable quantity of weird and wonderful pop. Der Osten ist Rot (‘The East is Red’ as indeed it was in those days) is his fourth solo album, dating from 1984, and it is awash with humour, grooves, and all-round subversive life energy. Reissued by the Grönland label.

Holger Czukay
Rome Remains Rome

Holger Czukay, core member of the crucial German experimental group Can, also created weird and wonderful pop / krautrock music of his own. On 1987’s Rome Remains Rome, he has assistance not only from Can drummer Jaki Leibezeit, but also from Public Image Limited etc.’s Jah Wobble, plus a well-dropped sample of Pope John Paul II on one track. Fun stuff! Reissued on Grönland.

Mueller_Roedelius
Imagori II

The second collaborative LP between Christoph H. Müller (Gotan Project) and Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Harmonia, Cluster) drops via Grönland. Much like 2015’s Imagori, Imagori II is a collection of deep, patient downtempo electronica in the !K7/Kompakt mould. Guests include Miss Kenichi and, on ‘La Vie En Bleu’, Müller’s own daughter. Cute.

Technical Space Composer's Crew
Canaxis 5

Back in the early days of Can, Holger Czukay was involved in a some other groups while also playing in the band. One was the Technical Space Composer’s Crew, a project with Rolf Dammers that was inspired by Czukay’s studies with Karlheinz Stockhausen. Originally released in 1969 - the same year as Can’s debut LP Monster Movie - Canaxis 5 sees the duo expand on the concrete techniques of Stockhausen. Strange radio incantations and static interference flit around Czukay’s bass playing on this eerie record.

Holger Czukay
Movies

Holger Czukay's classic solo LP Movies from 1979 gets a timely reissue from Grönland and it's a lovely, crisp re-press of the remastered edition the label graced us with two years ago. A future-jazz masterpiece, the record includes the wonderful 'Cool In The Pool' (very welcome!) and the experimental pop-with-synth-workout 'Oh Lord Give Us More Money'. Czukay channels the funk of Chic and the cool of Steely Dan; 'Persian Love' yearns forlornly and the fifteen-minute-plus 'Hollywood Symphony' rollicks along over a rubbery, unstoppable groove.

Holger Czukay, Jah Wobble, Jaki Liebezeit
Full Circle

Originally dropped in 1982, this meeting of minds now gets a reissue courtesy of Grönland. The minds behind Full Circle would have been quite the super-group at the time of the initial release - Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit were on hiatus from Can, and Jah Wobble had only recently left Public Image Ltd. As one might expect, this is an upstart mixture of Krautrock, dub and groove-punk. Good clean fun.

David Sylvian & Holger Czukay
Plight & Premonition Flux & Mutability

The man once dubbed the Most Beautiful Man In The World...and ...er.. David Sylvian collaborated way back in the mid '80s on these two LPs in Can's home place of Koln in bleak midwinter. At the time record companies weren't bothered about such esoteric collaborations so now is a good time to revisit what the pair were up to. These beatless almost airless ambient albums  have now been collected together on a much needed re-issue and remastered for hopefully a more welcoming world.

D.A.F.
Die Kleinen Und Die Bösen

The 1980 sophomore LP from the Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft gets the reissue treatment from Groenland (Neu!, William Fitzsimmons). The A-side, produced by Conny Plank, finds the common ground between Suicide, Einstuerzende Neubauten and the Pet Shop Boys, while the B-side showcases the fury of the band’s live show. Any record that can count itself as a favourite of Simon Reynolds is going to be worth your time.

D.A.F.
Gold Und Liebe

In 1981, Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft released their fourth album, the Conny Plank-produced Gold und Liebe. Of course, the D.A.F. boys are in a sexy synthy mood, pushing their electropunk power onto the listener with excellent lusty power. Gold und Liebe is here reissued by Gronland on CD and as an LP.

Kat Frankie
Bad Behaviour

Sydney native and current Berlin resident Kat Frankie makes pop music, but it’s so much more than that. Musically complex, diverse and intricately crafted. If you’re a fan of Christine and The Queens or Florence and the Machine, you should probably give Bad Behaviour a whirl. LP and CD on Gronland.

D.A.F.
Für Immer

The fifth and final album from the duo of Gabi Delgado-López and Robert Görl came out in 1982. Content ranges from the jaunty pop of Geheimnis to more stern stuff like Die Lippe and Die Götter Sind Weiss. It’s a bit more varied than previous work, but as ever finds a nice balance between punishing and fun. Reissued on LP and CD.

Holger Czukay
Movie!

Holger Czukay, the bass player in goddamn Can in case you weren’t aware, released solo album Movie in 1979. It isn’t a soundtrack album, but Holger does pull in samples from whatever was on the TV that day, building up colourful and lively sound-worlds around them. Groovy and texturally interesting all the way through. Reissued on Gronland.

Klaus Dinger & preJapandorf
2000!

We’ve never previously had an opportunity to hear this work by the late legendary Neu! drummer Klaus Dinger, which the motorik pioneer recorded with preJapandorf, a collection of various musicians. 2000! continues Klaus’s journeys into the infinity of sound, driven by that immortal ecstatic beat. Credit to Gronland for letting us hear this at last.

Electri_city 2

If you ever feel you’ve had enough of your Kraftwerk albums (as if..), for the the time being anyway, Gronland have put together this excellent compilation showcasing the Dusseldorf electronic scene from the 70s and 80s. Featuring tracks from neu!, wolfgang flür, daf, wolfgang riechmann, and so many more. Crucial.

I Have A Tribe
Beneath A Yellow Moon

Beneath A Yellow Moon is the full-length debut for Patrick O’Laoghaire’s solo project I Have A Tribe, following on from an EP recorded with Villagers. It certainly feels like a solo album, with heartfelt songcraft that can feel almost confessional. The music is in that rich vein of American / Americana indie bands (think Midlake). On Gronland.

William Fitzsimmons
The Pittsburgh Collection

William Fitzsimmons is an American singer-songwriter with a deeply intimate approach to his craft: he has no fear of baring his soul to the listener, with his Pittsburgh series being themed around his 2 deceased grandmothers. This release pairs Volume One, Pittsburgh, with the new mini-album Charleroi, gathered on one LP. On Gronland

Harmonia
Documents 1975

Unfortunately (and inadvertently) timed to coincide with the death of core member Dieter Moebius, here is a set of previously unreleased recordings by Harmonia. Documents 1975 has live and studio tracks never before heard by the komische-loving public, all bounced down to cassette tape. On Grönland.

Harmonia
Deluxe

Always good to have these German jewels in print. Gronland are reissuing the first two Harmonia studio albums, to the joy of all. The 1970’s group combined Cluster with Micheal Rother of Neu!: three professionals in the art of ascending to higher musical planes through shiny repetition. Deluxe has a fairly grotesque cover, but it otherwise superb.

I Have A Tribe
No Countries

I Have A Tribe is an artist of intimacy: on several of No Countries’ tracks there is little more than careful piano and his melancholy vocals leaning into your ear. One of Ireland’s bright new talents, and quite possible someone for Villagers (who has worked with I Have A Tribe) fans to pay attention to. 12” EP on the Gronland label.

Mueller_Roedelius
Imagori

Mueller_Roedelius are Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Christoph H. Mueller, coming together for the first time to create Imagori. It’s an album of electronic music but it feels intimately hand-crafted. The tunes are deep and warm with some rich piano and lots of percussive flourishes. It’s like electronic jazz. Pressed on a pink vinyl LP.

Duke Ellington & His Orchestra
The Conny Plank Session

Whoah, who knew that Duke Ellington & His Orchestra did a recording session with legendary krautrock / komische producer Conny Plank (Can, Neu!, Ash Ra Tempel etc.)? Well he did, in 1970, and it sounds just super, Ellington’s crew deftly moving around the tunes with a thrillingly loose sensibility. On Gronland.

Les Vampyrettes
Les Vampyrettes

A previously unreleased collaboration between krautrock producer Conny Plank and Can-member Holger Czukay, Les Vampyrettes features creepy kosmiche and deep voiced German spoken word. A unique rarity from the archives. Out on blue vinyl LP with fold out poster and 3 x 10” vinyl box set from Gronland.

Klaus Dinger + Japandorf
Japandorf

Japandorf is the final thing Neu!, La Düsseldorf and Kraftwerk member Klaus Dinger recorded before his death in 2008. After throwing open the doors to his Düsseldorf studio at the beginning of the 2000s, the final years of Dinger’s life saw him collaborating extensively with musicians from the city’s Japanese community. The result is this set of Eastward-facing Krautrock, certainly one of the most vibrant records that any of the German scene’s great voices made in their later years.

Neu!
Neu!

Neu! is the legendary project of former Kraftwerk members  Michael Rother and Klaus Dinger where they turned repetitive krautrock into an artform and subsequently influenced almost everybody (including David Bowie and Radiohead). It was on this album that Dinger invented the 'motorik' drum beat, the distinctive rhythm of which would be heard on many a record in the future.

Neu!
Neu! 2

Neu! 2, the second LP from German Krautrock maestros, Neu!, is continually hailed as a classic of both the Krautrock genre and frankly, of the album format. The group honed the sound they had cultivated on their debut LP through 11-minute crunchers like 'Für Immer'. With the band having run out of recording money, the B-side is a few different manipulations of their previous single - a shoestring budget but turned out quite well.
