Kokoroko
Kokoroko

Kokoroko are part of London's current jazz scene as documented on the We Out Here compilation. Their self-titled EP, also on Brownswood Recording, captures the band as it effortlessly blends jazz with afrobeat and soul to create something utterly vibrant. They are lead by Sheila Maurice-Grey and her wonderful trumpet playing.

Joe Armon-Jones
Turn To Clear View

Joe Armon-Jones has featured in the bands Ezra Collective and Mr. Jukes. He is known for his keyboard skills and adding a distinctly jazz flavour to club sounds along with R&B, hip-hop and p-funk. His latest solo outing, 'Turn To Clear View', sees him nodding in the direction of Herbie Hancock and Mad Scientist. Regular collaborators Oscar Jerome, Moses Boyd and Nubya Garcia contribute.

Daymé Arocena
Sonocardiogram

Daymé Arocena is a singer from Cuba. Her eponymous album lays down rumba rhythms which are then sprinkled with jazz. She is backed by a crack team of fellow Cuban musicians. She is influenced by legends of Cuban music such as La Lupe and Tito Puente. Recently she has collaborated with Dexter Story and Roberto Fonseca. Apparently, her live show is quite the thing to behold, so perhaps try and catch her in town sometime.

Skinny Pelembe
Dreaming Is Dead Now

Skinny Pelembe’s debut album, Dreaming Is Dead, mixes dub, hip-hop, sun-drenched folk and blissed-out soul. Giles Peterson has championed the Johannesburg-born, Doncaster-raised artist. James Lavelle and Ghostpoet have also been singing his praises. The album was produced by Malcolm Catto of Heliocentrics. If you like Massive Attack, this is probably for you. LP and CD on Brownswood Recording.

Swindle
No More Normal

Swindle comes from grime and dubstep background and builds on these foundations by incorporating UK jazz and hip-hop. No More Normal sees him working MCs such as Kojey Radical, Ghetts, D Double E and P Money, vocalists Etta Bond, Eva Lazarus, Kiko Bun and Daley and musicians Dubya Garcia, Yussef Dayes and Riot Jazz. Hiring such a cast of characters came from his need for everyone to be on his album. LP and CD on Brownswood.

Maisha
There Is A Place

Ride the London Jazz Underground, Brownswood Records line, then hop off at Maisha station. There is a place there called There is a Place. It’s this debut Maisha album and it’s a vibrant little corner indeed. Drummer-bandleader James Long and his twelve-strong accomplices weave through guitar- and sax-led spiritual jazz, Afrobeat and other stylings.

Joe Armon-Jones
Starting Today

One of the leading lights of young British jazz in 2018, Ezra Collective member Joe Armon-Jones drops his debut solo LP via Brownswood. Starting Today is as much of a melting-pot as you’d expect. Influences of jazz, hard-bop, soul, afrobeat and plenty else show here, and the performances of Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia and others buoy this globalist, cosmopolitan record.

We Out Here

We Out Here presents a snapshot of the current state of young London jazz, and let me tell you, the scene(s) are sounding in fine health! Nine tracks, all recorded especially for this release, map the variety of sounds and cross-pollinations currently going on, such as Ezra Collective’s afrobeat stylings and Shabaka Hutchings’ free-but-rhythmic power. Great stuff on CD and 2 LPs by Brownswood Recordings.

Hello Skinny
Watermelon Sun

Hello Skinny target their actions straight for the heart of New York’s dub-disco jazz 1970’s avant-garde world, seemingly using Arthur Russell collaborator Peter Zummo, who appears on Watermelon Sun, to channel those sweet sounds to the present day. Limber and funky and experimental goodness. On Brownswood Recordings.

Bubblers Twelve pt.1 - Compiled by Giles Peterson

If you want a compilation of otherworldly underground music, Giles Peterson and his Brownswood Bubblers series is a one stop shop. Now on it’s twelfth installment and having previously uncovered the likes of Flying Lotus and Dam-Funk I’d just buy this one blind. Features tracks from Wayne Snow, Sélébéyone, and Red Planet.

Mala
Mirrors

Mirrors is the result of South London’s Mala taking an extended stay in Peru, soaking up the crucial rhythms of the local music. He incorporates recordings of flutes, tap-dancers and percussion into his electronic bass music, successfully giving equal respect and weight to both traditions: none of the patronising approaches of ‘world music’ here. CD or DJ-friendly 3LP set on Brownswood Recordings.

Ghostpoet
Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam

There was a point in the early 2010s when people were talking about Ghostpoet as the heir to Mike Skinner’s throne. He’s never quite made good on that promise (though there’s still time), but debut LP Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam remains his most accomplished work. As well as the Skinner comparisons, street salvos like ‘Finished I Ain’t’ and ‘Cash And Carry Me Home’ have a distinct Roots Manuva flex to them.
