Swindle
No More Normal

Swindle comes from grime and dubstep background and builds on these foundations by incorporating UK jazz and hip-hop. No More Normal sees him working MCs such as Kojey Radical, Ghetts, D Double E and P Money, vocalists Etta Bond, Eva Lazarus, Kiko Bun and Daley and musicians Dubya Garcia, Yussef Dayes and Riot Jazz. Hiring such a cast of characters came from his need for everyone to be on his album. LP and CD on Brownswood.

Joe Armon-Jones
Starting Today

One of the leading lights of young British jazz in 2018, Ezra Collective member Joe Armon-Jones drops his debut solo LP via Brownswood. Starting Today is as much of a melting-pot as you’d expect. Influences of jazz, hard-bop, soul, afrobeat and plenty else show here, and the performances of Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia and others buoy this globalist, cosmopolitan record.

Curveballs deluxe via Tokyo resident Toshio Matsuura, a DJ and tunemaker who here groups himself up for an esoteric record that takes on old songs and re-contextualises them into new shapes. Those looking for a window into Matsuura's musical mind -- be it Detroit dance music, new realms of jazz or sample-heavy FlyLo styles -- need look no further.

We Out Here

We Out Here presents a snapshot of the current state of young London jazz, and let me tell you, the scene(s) are sounding in fine health! Nine tracks, all recorded especially for this release, map the variety of sounds and cross-pollinations currently going on, such as Ezra Collective’s afrobeat stylings and Shabaka Hutchings’ free-but-rhythmic power. Great stuff on CD and 2 LPs by Brownswood Recordings.

Hello Skinny
Watermelon Sun

Hello Skinny target their actions straight for the heart of New York’s dub-disco jazz 1970’s avant-garde world, seemingly using Arthur Russell collaborator Peter Zummo, who appears on Watermelon Sun, to channel those sweet sounds to the present day. Limber and funky and experimental goodness. On Brownswood Recordings.

Jose James

Snapped up by Gilles Peterson for his Brownswood Recordings imprint and now signed to the one and only Blue Note, as well as working with the likes of Flying Lotus, Moodymann, and DJ Mitsu. Bubblers Twelve pt.1 - Compiled by Giles Peterson

If you want a compilation of otherworldly underground music, Giles Peterson and his Brownswood Bubblers series is a one stop shop. Now on it’s twelfth installment and having previously uncovered the likes of Flying Lotus and Dam-Funk I’d just buy this one blind. Features tracks from Wayne Snow, Sélébéyone, and Red Planet.

Mala
Mirrors

Mirrors is the result of South London’s Mala taking an extended stay in Peru, soaking up the crucial rhythms of the local music. He incorporates recordings of flutes, tap-dancers and percussion into his electronic bass music, successfully giving equal respect and weight to both traditions: none of the patronising approaches of ‘world music’ here. CD or DJ-friendly 3LP set on Brownswood Recordings.

Owiny Sigoma Band
Owiny Sigoma Band

Owiny Sigoma Band is an international meeting of musical minds: a London 5-piece who travelled to Nairobi and encountered Joseph Nyamungu and Charles Owoko, nyatiti and nyiduonge drum players respectively. This record was their debut soundclash, a blend strong enough to result in 2 further records since. Double LP on Brownswood Recordings.

LV
Ancient Mechanisms

On their fourth album electronic duo LV feed dance and rave traditions into weird jazz forms. Despite its title, Ancient Mechanisms takes only the sharpest and newest approaches to computer music. Available on CD and double vinyl LP from Brownswood, this globe-trotting record borrows from kwaito, London street scenes, Belgium field recordings and everything in between. Clattering drum programming creates the groove that ties everything together.

Owiny Sigoma Band
Nyanza

Owiny Sigoma Band are a Kenya-based project, combining supreme Kenyan musicians with a London rhythm section. Nyanza is a narratively-driven record of ecstatically charged half-electronic, half-acoustic dance music, apparently recorded straightforwardly in a rented house. Released by Brownswood Recordings.

Swindle
Walter’s Call

Swindle serves up a bombastic slice of UK funky with 'Walter's Call', with sax bursting out of the seams and beats squeaking underfoot. It's dubstep, but in disguise, made to sound so outlandishly jazzy that you barely notice the other genre tricks. It's no surprise Swindle used to be a pianist in Mala's band, and that he's interested in the exciting, colourful places dubstep can go, if it so chooses. 'Walter's Call' is all emergency sirens and party footwork -- it will make you tense, then it will make you shake it off.

Ghostpoet
Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam

There was a point in the early 2010s when people were talking about Ghostpoet as the heir to Mike Skinner’s throne. He’s never quite made good on that promise (though there’s still time), but debut LP Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam remains his most accomplished work. As well as the Skinner comparisons, street salvos like ‘Finished I Ain’t’ and ‘Cash And Carry Me Home’ have a distinct Roots Manuva flex to them.
