Chess Club Vinyl, CD & tapes from this label at Norman Records
At the tender age of 15, it could be said that multi-instrumentalist Alfie Templeman is making music beyond his years. With drum samples and wibbly-wobbly chorused guitar he comes across as a more pop, less weird version of Mac Demarco. Like An Animal is his debut EP. 10” purple vinyl EP on Chess Club.
Forever Neverland is the second album by MØ, it comes four years after her debut, No Mythologies To Follow. The Danish singer, who is 30 - a fact that the press release deems important, has collaborated with several artists on the album to aid her pop/indie/electronic ways. These include American DJ and producer, Diplo and singer Charli XCX. LP and CD on Chess Club.

Something deliciously awkward is present in the opening seconds to 'Curtains'. What follows brings us comfortably into sludgy pop-rock, with vocal harmonies sounding like Cursive, and a distinctly British swagger. 'Coke' works on low fuzz and clear, bright vocals, more uptempo, and no less anthemic.
Sundara Karma burst onto the scene with their Youth is Only Ever Fun In Retrospect LP (soon to be re-issued and revamped). In the meantime they issue a limited 7" of Explore which as fun a slice of Strokes-ish, Arcade Fire ish indie that you are likely to find dwelling in the Thames Valley.
This new single from another one of those London Grammar-type singers sets itself apart for three reasons:
It’s got a great beat, sort of like this mash-up of Sophie’s ‘Hard’ and Death Grips’ ‘Anne Bonny’ I heard on YouTube once.
CASI’s voice is stronger than your average and also has a lovely Welsh twang to it.
The 7” comes with a sheet of stickers, and who doesn’t like stickers?
Nice ethereal acoustic twiddlings from silky-voiced Ripon-based songstress Isabella Sophie Tweddle, aka Billie Marten. A Youtube sensation at the age of 12, Marten is now getting some serious attention, including a nomination for BBC Sound of 2016. And she's still only 17. According to her Wikipedia page she is, apparently, obsessed with alpacas. Interesting, but there's no mention of any llama-like shenanigans on 'Milk and Honey'.

Introducing Bloxx - the latest indie-rock buzz in West-London. With an array of candid vocals and minimal production, You / Your Boyfriend makes for a neat debut offering from the young four-piece. Whilst the LP is enveloped in juvenile energy, a mature songwriterly spirit hints at a great future for the group.
Pumarosa are new enough that this is only their second single. But their dance-angled rock sounds like it has plenty of cutting-edge hit potential, so maybe jump onboard now! Cecile could accompany a summer yacht party, at least up until the point of the relatively heavy instrumental breakdown. This 12” single (on white vinyl) is out on Chess Club.
In this post-’Little Lion Man’ world, one would think that the market for anthemic choruses, soaring ‘oh-woah’ gang vocals and clickbait chord progressions had reached something close to saturation. But as long as there are bands like London two-piece Little White Things penning very competent indie-pop ditties like ‘Step Back’, that market will actually just grow and grow forever more. Out on the excellent Chess Club.
You must have some lovely karma, to encounter such a gift on your life's travels. Some might argue that Youth Is Only Fun in Retrospect, but listening to Sundara Karma’s energetic and youthful debut album is already fun while you’re doing it. Just be ready to be bob your head and hum catchy riffs all day long.
Emerging out of the delightful North Yorkshire city (yup it has a cathedral) of Ripon, Bille Marten (actual name Isabella Sophie Tweddle) has a voice made out of some kind of silk-like substance and writes moody acoustic songs that tug at any heartstrings you may still have left. This is her much anticipated debut which on initial listen could draw comparisons with early Laura Marling.

The very first release by Casi, a Welsh artiste who’ll probably be a radio staple in about a year and a half (mark my words). Both A-side Lion and AA-side Golden Age Thinking have big big choruses and a melancholy-pop-tastic vibe. Although let's be clear, there is plenty of sonic invention here too: I like Casi’s multi-tracked and multi-pitched vocal layering. 7” on Chess Club.
Billie Marten is apparently tipped for greatness: someone noticed that she is quite good, despite only being 16 years of age. The As Long As EP is her longest release to date, and features her impressive voice over a bed of heart-string-tugging ornate folk music. 10” vinyl, released by the Chess Club label.
Sundara Karma’s EPII contains 4 tracks of the band’s anthemic indie rock, the kind of thing that goes down very well at the larger rock festivals. The production is smooth, but you can hear the vocalist straining into raw intensity at certain points. Pressed to 10” vinyl in a nice shade of green, released by the Chess Club label.
With their debut on Chess Club, Pumarosa are announcing their prowess to listeners worldwide. Produced by Dan Carey, Priestess combines influences from slow, introspective dub electronica with catchy guitar hooks and intense vocals to create a spiritual and industrial track: the tension keeps on building in this excellent 12”. Out on limited white vinyl.
It’s the debut single from Beach Baby, a London based four piece. Ladybird is some chilled-out indie pop with some swooning backing singing and some downbeat lead vocals which gently wash over you. For fans of bands such as We Were Evergreen, Cloud Control and The Naked and Famous.
Limited to 300 copies.
Sounding a little bit acid house along with a touch of gospel is the new single from Swim Deep. This limited edition 7” vinyl is on the Chess Club label via RCA Victor.Self described as psychedelic sex music. it’s perfect for evenings in in the bedroom with the woman/man/other of your choice.
Swim Deep are an indie-pop quintet from Birmingham. Mothers is the band’s second album. Their sound is seemingly influenced by the credible pop acts of the early-to-mid ‘80s. The band are part of the emerging B-Town scene in Digbeth along with Peace. On coloured vinyl LP and CD.

Sundara Karma are a Berkshire four-piece, apparently all aged eighteen. So plenty of youthful vigour in here yes? There is indeed, although this is far from a teenage punk pour-out. Rather, Flame is a carefully considered indie tune probably designed as an ‘anthem’, with impressive sounding production. 7” single on Chess Club.
Beach Baby are an indie pop four-piece from Dorset and Athens who met at Goldsmiths College in London. Limited to 300 copies, their latest single release 'No Mind No Money' is part of a Chess Club records 7''series which included their debut March release 'Ladybird'. Their music comprises elements of shoegaze, post punk, indie pop and late nineties grunge into a coherent, catchy package.
Interesting to release a song named One Great Song And I Could Change The World: the boast seems arrogant but the word ‘could’ suggests that this song is not a great one after all… This 7” of sweeping indie pop from Swim Deep is in a limited edition, released as part of RCA Records’ Chess Club.
Oceaán is a Brussels-born producer who has relocated to Manchester after spending his early years in the country of his birth and Denmark. His eponymous debut 5 track EP is an innovative blast of R&B infused garage. Big things are expected from him and he has already earned plaudits from Line Of Best Fit, DIY and Pigeons and Planes.
Oceaán is available on 12” vinyl.
Oceaán's breathy, emotive and melodramatic electro-pop shines through on new EP The Grip, which yields with its gorgeous, palatable synthwork at the same time as its beats pound forwards. Oceaán has made The Grip loud and proud but with minimalism in the back of his mind.
MØ is Danish singer-songwriter, also known as Karen Marie Ørsted. No Mythologies to Follow is the 26 year old’s debut album. MØ is a self-confessed Spice Girls obsessive, she even covered Say You’ll Be There for a record store day release. However, more recently she listened to harder-edged alternative rock and punk and cites Kim Gordon as her idol, although her musical output follows a more electronic path.
No Mythologies To Follow is available on 20 track double vinyl LP or 12 track CD.
