Bryan's Magic Tears
4 AM

Bryan’s Magic Tears revel in the sounds made by bands such as Pavement and Sebadoh in their lo-fi beginnings - beautiful ‘90s melodic sludge. They are led by Benjamin Dupont previously of Dame Blanche and feature members of La Secte Du Futur and Marietta. 4AM is their new album and is available on LP and CD on Born Bad.

Mobilisation Generale - French Protest and Spirit Jazz 1970-1976

As anyone with even a passing knowledge of French history will tell you, the late 1960s was a period of protest unlike anything the country had seen before. Some great music came out of that time, from rock ‘n’ roll to ye-ye to jazz. It is the latter that Born Bad's Mobilisation Generale - French Protest and Spirit Jazz 1970-1976 concerns itself with. The compilation showcases a generation of Gallic jazzers drawing inspiration from the likes of Ornette Coleman and The Art Ensemble of Chicago to make inroads into all things funky, spiritual, astral and free. A timely release given all the gilets jaunes stuff going down as we type this.

Mobilisation Generale - Protest and Spirit Jazz from France 1970-1976

French spiritual awakenings on Mobilisation Generale - Protest and Spirit Jazz from France 1970 - 1976. Coming from the cosmic school of Sun Ra, Ornette, Trane, Dolphy and The Art Ensemble of Chicago (whom appear on the first track), this compilation is the narrative of Europeans channeling free movement and the African American avant-garde. A soulful remedy for your winter blues. Out on double vinyl LP from Born Bad.

Jean-Pierre Mirouze
Le Mariage Collectif (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Jean-Pierre Mirouze’s soundtrack to 1971 French-Danish soft porn film Le Mariage Collectif was destined for the trash. We mean that literally - if the people at Born Bad hadn’t rescued the original acetate from a Paris dumpster back in 2010 then it’s likely that this music would have been lost. It’s a good thing they’ve put the score back on wax, because the music here is one of the more risque pieces of library jazz-funk you’re likely to hear in the near future. Also, any album with a track called ‘Sexopolis’ on it is going to be worth a listen.

Antilles Méchant Bateau

Music from Guadeloupe and Martinique, showcasing the Gwo Ka and Biguine traditions. Antilles Mechant Bateau is a 1960 cut by Andre Mahy which both opens and gives name to this compilation on Born Bad, and it sets off the rest of the tracklisting perfectly with its gorgeous bar-room piano, languid saxophone and mournful vocals.

Bernard Estardy
Space Oddities 1970-1982

Bernard Estardy had one of the most influential careers in French pop. From his studio the late producer helped shape the sounds of artists including Francoise Hardy and Claude Francois. As well as working behind the scenes for singers he was always tinkering at the controls and made many solo records of experimental Library pop throughout the second half of the 20th Century. Space Oddities 1970-1982 sees Born Bad Records (La Femme, Francis Bebey) collate a few choice nuggets from Estardy’s extensive body of oddities.

Pierre Sandwidi
Le Troubadour De La Savane 1976-1980

Pierre Sandwidi, nicknamed "the troubadour from the bush", was known for his beautifully crafted lyrics and political commentary, both present and correct on this collection of his best work from the late '70s and early '80s. An exciting record documenting the rich and diverse Burkino Faso music scene.

Group Doueh & Cheveu
Dahkla Sahara

Here is an international team-up between the excellent Tuareg ensemble Group Doueh and French group Cheveu. The bands spent a fortnight working together, discovering ways of hewing their two sounds into one unified hybrid, and with great success: Dahkla Sahara is totally engaged music. CD and LP editions on Born Bad.

Francis Bebey
Psychedelic Sanza 1982-1984

Crate diggers and rare musical magpies Born Bad give us another reason to love them with Francis Bebey's 'Psychedelic Stanza', a biographical compilation that combs through the best work of Cameroonian polymath Francis Bebey, who created a sound that could be groovy and raw at the same time, as finely textured as it was utterly sparse. This time they look at the '80s period of his recording career, which retains the same joyous spirit -- just listen to him sing.

La Femme
Psycho Tropical Berlin

A wacky tarte au citron from French persons La Femme. Psycho Tropical Berlin is an up tempo barrage of zany electro tinged pop punk. Loads of synths, disco-esque drums, surfy guitars and poppy vocal hooks. They sound similar to the current crop of French bands like Sexy Sushi and Granville. Out on double vinyl LP from Born Bad.

Chebran (French Boogie 1981-1985)

Groovy days from mid-1980’s France! Chebran (French Boogie 1981-1985) documents a just-about-unique scene of new wave / disco / early rap that briefly blossomed en Francais, favouring themes and ideals of luxury parties on sunny yachts. Artists include Hugues Hamilton, Casino, and Gerard Vincent. On Born Bad.

Lonely Walk
Teen

Lonely Walk is a heavy band project that features members of Strasbourg, Panoptique, Magneto and several other bands, plus the brains behind the Simple Music Experience label. With Teen they dive headlong into a synth-streaked dark post-punk tunnel, where the listener is more than welcome to join them. Released on the Born Bad label.

Wild Classical Music Ensemble
Tapping Is Clapping

Don’t believe Wild Classical Music Ensemble’s name, this is more of a Wild Rock Music Ensemble. Although they are pretty wild to be fair, improvising with tight drums, riffing guitars, howling vocals, melodica and other instruments. Tapping Is Clapping is a pretty furious whirlwind of a sound, and is released on Born Bad.

D.I.R.T.Y French Psychedelic

For the occasional dabble in psychedelic pop from across the channel, you have come to the correct address. Dirty Sound System has released a compilation of some of their finest, trippiest and catchiest pop. D.I.R.T.Y. French Psychedelic is not just a timepiece, it is also really satisfying to listen to. Imagine that.

Marietta
Basement Dreams Are The Bedroom Cream

Basement Dreams Are The Bedroom Cream crams ten songs into its single-room confines, each built up by Guillaume Marietta, with help here and there from a few friends. Personal, intimate, and clatteringly full of bits and pieces of sonic detritus, this makes for a compelling and fun record. On Born Bad.

WIZZZ! French Psychorama 1967-1970 Volume 3

WIZZZ! French Psychorama 1967-1970 Volume 3 sets itself out very clearly with that title: the weirdo energy that flows through these examples of French odd-pop is thrilling. Poppy enough to get played on the radio, but innovative enough to fascinate even fifty years later. Great stuff, packaged with an informative booklet, on Born Bad.

Guerre Froide
Guerre Froide

A really cutting slice of cold-wave synth-pop business here, cast out into the world in an edition of far too few copies back in 1981. Guerre Froide is as stark and beautiful as it’s cover would suggest, and thankfully it is now seeing a reissue on Born Bad: the first ever reissue on vinyl! Rejoyce.

Jean-Pierre Decerf
Space Oddities 1975-1978

An old Frenchman made music, a long time ago. Unfortunately his recordings ended up under layers of dust. But now, we’re in luck: Jean-Pierre Decerf’s recordings from the seventies are finally available for purchase and listening. Space Oddities 1975-1978 is here. Truly a victory for all of us!

Forever Pavot
Rhapsode

A nutty funfair of psychy nonsense from Parisian revivalist Forever Pavot. Rhapsode is a helter-skelter from the 60's to the present, full of creepy-organs, ethereal vocalizations and darkly twangy guitars. It's like Morricone, The Beatles and The Doors doing the music for the original Doctor Who - you know, the acid years. Out on vinyl LP and CD from Born Bad.

Various
Dirty French Psychedelics: Selected By Dirty Sound System

Ou est le bong? One may ask this question whilst sitting down on a sunday afternoon with Dirty French Psychedelics: Selected By Dirty Sound System. Somewhere between Top Drawer, Baby Grandmothers' and Serge Gainsbourg, this compilation smothers you in the psychedelic sounds of France in the 60's & 70's. Out on vinyl LP from Born Bad.

Cha Cha Guitri
French Synth Wave - St Etienne 1981

This could quite possibly be the most French thing that has ever sonically existed. Before I read the bands name I heard the record and a pretentious baguette of apathy materialized in front of me. Cha Cha Guitri is pure Kraftwerkian synth pop with all yer favorite drum machines, zany synths infused with their own off-kilter warbles. With titles like "Non non non" and "Monsieur Madame" could French Synth Wave - St Etienne 1981 be anything else? Out on vinyl LP and CD from Born Bad.

Cheveu
Bum

Eccentric indie-stuff from Frenchies Cheveu. After a few listens, I'm not sure if Bum is metaphorical or literal - to be honest I don't think it matters. It has a lot to say, going from a sort of updated post-punk with Hot Chip production stylings, to a full blown loony choir to some dystopian rave. Imagine if The Strokes had gone mad and moved to France. Out on vinyl LP and CD from Born Bad.
