Frustration
So Cold Streams

So Cold Streams is the fifth album from French post-punk band, Frustration. Their sound flits from electro-punk to ‘80s British indie bands such as Echo & The Bunnymen and The Smiths. Sleaford Mods lead shouter, Jason Williamson also turns up on the track, Slave Markets, which has been described as ‘insane’. Frustration vocalist, Fabrice Gilbert, said that writing lyrics for Jason Williamson to sing meant he didn’t have to hold back. Intriguing.

Chevance - Outremusique pour enfants 1974-1985

Take an eye-opening spin through the catalogue of Chevance, Philippe Gavardin’s experimental sub-label, wherein all manner of experiments were published. Linguists, chansons, free-leaning jazz, poetics and unclassifiable abstractions are all featured in this survey of the most intriguing moments of those eleven years of activity. Really, the only way to get an impression is to dive into Outremusique pour enfants yourself! Compilation on Born Bad.

Pierre Sandwidi
Le Troubadour De La Savane 1976-1980

Pierre Sandwidi, nicknamed "the troubadour from the bush", was known for his beautifully crafted lyrics and political commentary, both present and correct on this collection of his best work from the late '70s and early '80s. An exciting record documenting the rich and diverse Burkino Faso music scene.

Bryan's Magic Tears
4 AM

Bryan’s Magic Tears revel in the sounds made by bands such as Pavement and Sebadoh in their lo-fi beginnings - beautiful ‘90s melodic sludge. They are led by Benjamin Dupont previously of Dame Blanche and feature members of La Secte Du Futur and Marietta. 4AM is their new album and is available on LP and CD on Born Bad.

Mobilisation Generale - French Protest and Spirit Jazz 1970-1976

As anyone with even a passing knowledge of French history will tell you, the late 1960s was a period of protest unlike anything the country had seen before. Some great music came out of that time, from rock ‘n’ roll to ye-ye to jazz. It is the latter that Born Bad's Mobilisation Generale - French Protest and Spirit Jazz 1970-1976 concerns itself with. The compilation showcases a generation of Gallic jazzers drawing inspiration from the likes of Ornette Coleman and The Art Ensemble of Chicago to make inroads into all things funky, spiritual, astral and free. A timely release given all the gilets jaunes stuff going down as we type this.

Jean-Pierre Mirouze
Le Mariage Collectif (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Jean-Pierre Mirouze’s soundtrack to 1971 French-Danish soft porn film Le Mariage Collectif was destined for the trash. We mean that literally - if the people at Born Bad hadn’t rescued the original acetate from a Paris dumpster back in 2010 then it’s likely that this music would have been lost. It’s a good thing they’ve put the score back on wax, because the music here is one of the more risque pieces of library jazz-funk you’re likely to hear in the near future. Also, any album with a track called ‘Sexopolis’ on it is going to be worth a listen.

Bernard Estardy
Space Oddities 1970-1982

Bernard Estardy had one of the most influential careers in French pop. From his studio the late producer helped shape the sounds of artists including Francoise Hardy and Claude Francois. As well as working behind the scenes for singers he was always tinkering at the controls and made many solo records of experimental Library pop throughout the second half of the 20th Century. Space Oddities 1970-1982 sees Born Bad Records (La Femme, Francis Bebey) collate a few choice nuggets from Estardy’s extensive body of oddities.

Francis Bebey
Psychedelic Sanza 1982-1984

Crate diggers and rare musical magpies Born Bad give us another reason to love them with Francis Bebey's 'Psychedelic Stanza', a biographical compilation that combs through the best work of Cameroonian polymath Francis Bebey, who created a sound that could be groovy and raw at the same time, as finely textured as it was utterly sparse. This time they look at the '80s period of his recording career, which retains the same joyous spirit -- just listen to him sing.

WIZZZ French psychorama 1966-1970 Volume 1

Born Bad Records (Hunx And His Punx, The Magnetix) have the pleasure of reissuing this 2001 compilation. Originally put out as a joint venture between Delabel, Michalon Vibrations and Musiques Hybrides, Wizzz! (Psychorama Français 66-71) has been referred to as a sort of Gallic answer to Nuggets. Any of you out there partial to a bit chansons or ye-ye should give Wizzz! a go.

With Teen they dive headlong into a synth-streaked dark post-punk tunnel, where the listener is more than welcome to join them. Released on the Born Bad label.
