1988

Finally delivering a proper sequel to his massively acclaimed debut album Hud Dreems from back in 2015 (on top of the gargantuan number of mixtapes released over the last ten years), Grammy-winning hip-hop producer Glen Earl Boothe (known under his moniker Knxwledge) releases the much-anticipated 1988.

Jerry Paper
Abracadabra

Abracadabra is the new album from musician, producer and oddball Jerry Paper. I mean, look at the cover, he has eyes on stalks, man! It is his seventh solo album and is recommended for fans of Connan Mockasin, Drugdealer and Mild High Club. His press release also notes that fans of Scott Walker and Steely Dan would like this, which they may well do, but I can’t help thinking he’s being a little cheeky.

Automatic
Calling It

Absolutely not to be confused with the Welsh band that recorded every 3 year-old's favourite song, 'Monster', Automatic are a three-piece from Los Angeles who play electronic post-punk. Fans of Savages, Suicide, Neu and Broadcast should check out their debut 7”, 'Calling It'. It is backed with a version of Leeds band Delta 5’s oft covered 'Mind Your Own Business'. Mndsgn
Snaxx

Not to be confused with 2018’s Snax - note the extra ‘x’ - Snaxx is a new beat-tape from popular dude Mndsgn. Snaxx is actually the Snax sequel, so if you got a whiff of the previous LP you’ll know what to expect here. This is a set of breezy, funky hip-hop and neo-soul that draws equally from the Chill Vibes (tm) of Homeshake and the Brainfeeder beat style. Oh, and it’s pronounced ‘mind design’ by the way.

Sudan Archives
Sudan Archives

Experimental violinist Sudan Archives offers succinct examples of her work here, drawing on Sudanese fiddlers, R&B and the electronic leftfield; the record is both emotive and surreal, serving not only as a deconstruction of her instrument but an opening up of new possibilities. Already one of Stone Throws' most intriguing releases.

Retrospect

Los Retros, aka 19 year-old Californian dude, Mauri Tapia, makes music inspired by ‘70s AOR and leftfield Hispanic pop. A weird, ostensibly incompatible mix, you may think. The Unseen

One of the greatest achievements of Stones Throw records, Quasimoto's 'The Unseen' is a classic of experimental hip hop. Acclaimed crate digger Madlib fashioned his Quasimoto alter ego after indulging in some mushrooms of the magic variety, creating the devious yellow anteater by pitching his voice up a few octaves. Sounds weird huh? Well 'The Unseen' is a bit of a wacky record, though it's psychedelic playfulness shines through jazzy beats, obscure samples and humorous rhymes. It's a Madlib record so you know the beats are going to be top-notch too!

An album as dazzling with guest appearances and stylistic diversions as it’s press release is with super-cool name dropping and fashionable locales, Jonti takes us through a sonic journey that sees us witness various conversations with Jonti’s own ‘Tokorat’, a complex and multi-facated creature that lives in his mirror and reflects the dark side of his personality. If that hasn’t put you off, and you don’t mind that the creation of this record was a ‘spiritual journey’ you may have plenty to find in this record, the path to it’s completion including collaborations with Mark Ronson, BADBADNOTGOOD, Odd Future and Sampa The Great.

As the saying goes, there’s two sides to every song, and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard and Mild High Club get one 7” side to record their own take on the same track. “Rolling Stoned” – originally written by Mild High Club’s frontman Alex Brettin – featured as a hidden track on their debut Timeline album back in 2015. After both bands collaborated to produce the jazzy “Sketches of Brunswick East” album last year, this release is just the epilogue we need (and deserve).

Rejoicer
Energy Dreams

After a few years releasing on his own Raw Tapes label, Israeli producer Rejoicer has struck beatsmith gold and signed for Stones Throw. However, Energy Dreams could just as easily have cropped up on Brainfeeder, such is the similarity to Daedelus and mid-period FlyLo. Funky, jazzy, hip-hoppy electronica of the sort that never goes out of fashion.

Jerry Paper
Your Cocoon

Jerry Paper is the alter-ego of Lucas Nathan, an LA based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He has previously released his music via labels such as Orange Milk and Bayonet, the latter being owned by Brooklyn indie-rockers, Beach Fossils. Grandmilly & Shozae
Adventureland

After two decent collaborative EPs, Raider Klan-affiliated MC Grandmilly and producer Shozae drop their debut full-length via Stones Throw. The tweak that makes Adventureland stand out is how the tunes often feel like they’re running slightly slower than they should be in a way that might make you check if your record player is malfunctioning. But no, cuts like ‘Graffiti’ and ‘Philip Lim’ are meant to be that syrupy. It gives the LP an evocative, hazy vibe. Grandmilly sometimes kicks into gear in a way that makes you think of a double-time A$AP Rocky.

Prophet
Right On Time

Unsure about the album art on this one. Is he suggesting that he is the prophet, overlooking the universe from the 1980's before descending down to earth today to save us from the absolute mess we find ourselves in? If that is the case, I welcome him. Right On Time is a 7" release from the aforementioned Prophet and contains two tracks from the original album Right On Time, funnily enough. Gladwemet

Knxwledge continues to throw down the gauntlet to beatmakers the world over. This new Stones Throw 7” splits neatly down the middle. Side A sees the LA producer partner with Traffic on ‘Relapse’, a smooth-as-hell tune that sounds like Michael Jackson’s ‘Rock With You’ after a couple of Valium. At this point, Gabriel Garzon Montano is someone you might be more familiar with for who he’s been sampled by - Drake used his song ‘Six Eight’ in If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late highlight ‘Jungle’ - than for his own music. However, ‘Golden Wings’ could go about changing that. It’s more of the sultry neo-soul/r&b that stocked his 2017 debut LP Jardin, and in the right hands it might become absolutely massive. Mild High Club
Skiptracing

Mild High Club’s second album in just a year has a pleasing concept: the idea is that a private detective is on the trail of “the spirit of American music” circa the 1970’s. What he finds is Skiptracing, a cool suite of Californian groove and Steely Dan-esque jazz-inflected mellow-rock. A fun record on Stones Throw.

Mndsgn
Yawn Zen

MNDSGn is a hip-hop producer who makes beats for the Klipm0de crew. It's pronounced "mind design", by the way, which should be totally obvious but for some reason isn't. 'Yawn Zen' is coming out on the revered Stones Throw Records, so this guy is serious business. He can be considered quite the hip-hop naturalist, having spent most of his life in forests and woodlands and having to break free of a cult his parents were members of.
