Jonti
Tokorats

An album as dazzling with guest appearances and stylistic diversions as it’s press release is with super-cool name dropping and fashionable locales, Jonti takes us through a sonic journey that sees us witness various conversations with Jonti’s own ‘Tokorat’, a complex and multi-facated creature that lives in his mirror and reflects the dark side of his personality. If that hasn’t put you off, and you don’t mind that the creation of this record was a ‘spiritual journey’ you may have plenty to find in this record, the path to it’s completion including collaborations with Mark Ronson, BADBADNOTGOOD, Odd Future and Sampa The Great.

Of course it's not his real name. Jerry Paper is the alter ego of LA based songwriter and multi instrumentalist Lucas Nathan. Mild High Club x King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Rolling Stoned

As the saying goes, there’s two sides to every song, and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard and Mild High Club get one 7” side to record their own take on the same track. “Rolling Stoned” – originally written by Mild High Club’s frontman Alex Brettin – featured as a hidden track on their debut Timeline album back in 2015. After both bands collaborated to produce the jazzy “Sketches of Brunswick East” album last year, this release is just the epilogue we need (and deserve).

Sudan Archives
Sudan Archives

Experimental violinist Sudan Archives offers succinct examples of her work here, drawing on Sudanese fiddlers, R&B and the electronic leftfield; the record is both emotive and surreal, serving not only as a deconstruction of her instrument but an opening up of new possibilities. Already one of Stone Throws' most intriguing releases.

Rejoicer
Energy Dreams

After a few years releasing on his own Raw Tapes label, Israeli producer Rejoicer has struck beatsmith gold and signed for Stones Throw. However, Energy Dreams could just as easily have cropped up on Brainfeeder, such is the similarity to Daedelus and mid-period FlyLo. Funky, jazzy, hip-hoppy electronica of the sort that never goes out of fashion.

Jerry Paper
Your Cocoon

Jerry Paper is the alter-ego of Lucas Nathan, an LA based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He has previously released his music via labels such as Orange Milk and Bayonet, the latter being owned by Brooklyn indie-rockers, Beach Fossils. His new 7”, Your Cocoon is his first release for Stones Throw Records, and includes with an exclusive b-side. If Mac Demarco, Homeshake, Connan Mockasin or Mild High Club are your bag, then you should check this out.

Grandmilly & Shozae
Adventureland

After two decent collaborative EPs, Raider Klan-affiliated MC Grandmilly and producer Shozae drop their debut full-length via Stones Throw. The tweak that makes Adventureland stand out is how the tunes often feel like they’re running slightly slower than they should be in a way that might make you check if your record player is malfunctioning. But no, cuts like ‘Graffiti’ and ‘Philip Lim’ are meant to be that syrupy. It gives the LP an evocative, hazy vibe. Grandmilly sometimes kicks into gear in a way that makes you think of a double-time A$AP Rocky.

Samiyam
Animals Have Feelings

The Stones Throw label is the perfect fit for Samiyam’s fourth album of soulful, loop heavy hip-hop. Animals Have Feelings is sumptuous and woozy, post-Dilla beat music with a host of incredible vocalists involved as well. Earl Sweatshirt, Action Bronson, Jeremiah Jae and Oliver the 2nd all jump on the mic to lend a hand.

Cohenbeats
Daily Affirmations

After releasing a pretty extensive catalogue of music through his own Bandcamp, Tel Aviv based producer Cohenbeats has been snapped up by the beatmaker flagship label Stones Throw for his debut label full length. Filled with obscure Israeli samples and pushed through an LA beat needle. Off-kilter, and gets your head poppin’.

Prophet
Right On Time

Unsure about the album art on this one. Is he suggesting that he is the prophet, overlooking the universe from the 1980's before descending down to earth today to save us from the absolute mess we find ourselves in? If that is the case, I welcome him. Right On Time is a 7" release from the aforementioned Prophet and contains two tracks from the original album Right On Time, funnily enough. Released on Stones Throw.

Knxwledge
Gladwemet

Knxwledge continues to throw down the gauntlet to beatmakers the world over. This new Stones Throw 7” splits neatly down the middle. Side A sees the LA producer partner with Traffic on ‘Relapse’, a smooth-as-hell tune that sounds like Michael Jackson’s ‘Rock With You’ after a couple of Valium. Flip the record over and we get five short, sweet beats. GladWeMet is another feather in the cap for Knxwledge.

Happysad

Proper chill and proper smooth from Kiefer. The debut record, Happysad, is a smart and jazzy collection of tracks written and performed by the LA-based musician. My Vinyl Weighs A Ton

Peanut Butter Wolf’s debut, My Vinyl Weighs A Ton was originally released in 1999 and is regarded as one of the best independent hip-hop albums of the ‘90s. Reissued 2LP on Manak’s own Stones Throw label.

Gabriel Garzón-Montano
Golden Wings

At this point, Gabriel Garzon Montano is someone you might be more familiar with for who he’s been sampled by - Drake used his song ‘Six Eight’ in If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late highlight ‘Jungle’ - than for his own music. However, ‘Golden Wings’ could go about changing that. It’s more of the sultry neo-soul/r&b that stocked his 2017 debut LP Jardin, and in the right hands it might become absolutely massive. Fresh new beats from Knxwledge, making his debut with Stones Throw Records. Prophet
Wanna Be Your Man

Just the thirty-four years on from Prophet’s debut LP Right On Time, he comes through with the follow-up for Stones Throw. There has been a quiet clamour for new music from the Bay Area artist - Right On Time is a highly collectable piece - and Wanna Be Your Man will be sure to please old fans as well as bringing in new ones. On this album, he updates the soulful electro-funk of Right On Time with the help of Mndsgn and Nite Jewel. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait so long for the next one.

Egyptian Lover is an underrated 1980’s electro producer, whose work is being authoritatively compiled by Stones Throw next year. Mild High Club
Skiptracing

Mild High Club’s second album in just a year has a pleasing concept: the idea is that a private detective is on the trail of “the spirit of American music” circa the 1970’s. What he finds is Skiptracing, a cool suite of Californian groove and Steely Dan-esque jazz-inflected mellow-rock. A fun record on Stones Throw.

Mndsgn
Yawn Zen

MNDSGn is a hip-hop producer who makes beats for the Klipm0de crew. It's pronounced "mind design", by the way, which should be totally obvious but for some reason isn't. 'Yawn Zen' is coming out on the revered Stones Throw Records, so this guy is serious business. He can be considered quite the hip-hop naturalist, having spent most of his life in forests and woodlands and having to break free of a cult his parents were members of. 'Yawn Zen' offers up a fresh perspective on instrumental hip hop and the places it comes from.

Stimulator Jones
Exotic Worlds and Masterful Treasures

I once encountered Stimulator Jones in an adult shop - it was on one of the shelves! No, this particular stimulator is actually none other than Sam Lunsford of Roanoke, Virginia. His debut Exotic Worlds and Masterful Treasures takes white boy soul/r’n’b to the next level of sincere flattery, eschewing contemporary production flair to ape the most classic 1970s and 1980s sounds he can manage.

Samiyam
Pizza Party

Samiyam’s second LP on Stones Throw is a delightful tape. Entirely sample-free, the beats here sit somewhere between Fly Lo, Karriem Riggins and Knxwledge, with the kindly spectre of Dilla blessing everything with some low-end theory. Be he dabbling in chiptune (‘Sour Candy’), neo-soul (‘Saturday Morning’) or electro-funk (‘Rough’), Samiyam’s production remains charming and warm throughout.

Quasimoto
Come on Feet

Madlib's status as a hip-hop producer and beat-maker extraordinaire was never in doubt, but in 2000, after digesting lot of tasty mushrooms, he gave birth to rapping alter-ego Quasimoto, with the classic record 'The Unseen'. On that record was the jazzed-up and impossibly trippy "Come On Feet", which stepped out as its own single. In a shock twist, the remix is the original and the original is the remix -- weird, but true. There's an instrumental to grab here, too.

Microphone Mathematics

Stones Throw celebrate the majestic, high-as-a-kite rapping of Quasimoto with a bunch of defiantly old school tunes from 'The Unseen', the first and best record from Madlib's mysterious alias. Fronting this release are three originals -- "Microphone Mathematics", of course, along with "Discipline 99" and "Low Class Conspiracy" - while the flip has the instrumentals for all wannabe Madlibs out there. Samples on samples.

Tuxedo
Tuxedo

This new duo are the smoothest of the smooth. So smooth in fact, that they named themselves after the smoothest garment in history, and sing about 'not waiting to get it on with her' to the point of it sounding a little bit creepy. Whatever the case, the Stones Throw bigdogs are impressed and their self-titled debut will bring unholy levels of 70s throwback funk.

NxWorries, Anderson .Paak and Knxwledge

They originally released their debut Yes Lawd! In 2016, but the creative types that they are didn’t stop there, finding new ways to interpret the tracks for Yes Lawd! Remixes. CD on Stones Throw.

The second record by Tuxedo (Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One) is, remarkably, yet more funky than their first! Proper party music, released by Stones Throw.

Veins is the latest ten-track release from Homeboy Sandman. Although he’s a pretty modest guy, his music is solid, real and relatable. This Generation by The Lions gets a dub reimagining from LA-based Dub Club. Taking the eight original tracks and mixing them with classic 70’s-inspired echo and reverb, it’s a dub remix album in the traditional sense. Stretching out vocals, horns and drums live through the desk, Tom Chasteen doffs his cap to Tubby. Out on vinyl LP from Stones Throw.

The modern sound of funky R&B from Silk Rhodes. This self-titled record is a fresh take on contemporaneous R&B - packed with an array of sultry keyboards and synths, super tight guitars, some funk-centric bass and sultry vocals. A fusion of Stevie, D'angelo, Prince and Sa-Ra. These are some straight up sexy jams. Pick it up on Vinyl LP and CD from Stones Throw.

Natural Numbers
Natural Numbers In Dub

Stones Throw are generally known for their left-field hip-hop oddities but this is a full on dub reggae opus. I wouldn't even say it's all that dubby, certainly not in the effects laden style of King Tubby or anything. Instead it's smooth organic reggae from the co-founder of Los Angeles' Dub Club, dubbed out nicely on the mixing desk. Certainly a sweet blissed out listen for lazy afternoons.

Quasimoto
Basic Instinct

Couple of tasty Quasimoto reissue 12"s coming in from Stones Throw. 'Basic Instinct' originally came out in 2000, but didn't feature on that year's 'The Unseen' LP, a warped feel-good samplescape full of Madlib alter-ego Lord Quas's pitch-shifted rhymes and easygoing hip-hop beats. Great chance to grab this classic while it's back on wax.

Quasimoto
Bus Ride/Rappcats

As well as the Unseen-era 'Basic Instinct' EP, Stones Thrown are reissuing this 2005 slice of Quasimoto which was released in the run-up to the 'Further Adventures of Lord Quas' album, with the title track's warped good vibes that disintegrate into oddball Beefheartian weirdness and 'Greenery' both appearing on said album. Instrumentals are included. Can't go far wrong with a bit of Madlib's goofball alter-ego.

Madvillain
Madvillainy

Madlib and MF DOOM present an experimental hiphop tour de force that was beset by internet leaks before completion, and initially abandoned midway by its creators before seeing the light of day in 2004 and becoming a crossover hit. Brimming with unlikely samples (Mothers of Invention, Gentle Giant, Bill Evans, Steve Reich, Egg) and DOOM’s characteristically dazzling and dense rhymes. Double LP reissue.

Silk Rhodes
Pains

Silk Rhodes made their debut with "Face2Face", which appeared on the soundtrack for 'Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton', a film documenting the rise and legacy of Stones Throw Records. The Baltimore duo make R&B that's produced sparsely and simply in order to concentrate on voices with minimal supplementing. This 7" includes "Face2Face" as a B-side, as well as the lead single "Pains".

Pyramid Vritra
Palace

Oh Stones Throw you rarely disappoint. On a warm and sunny autumnal afternoon there's nothing like a slice of West Coast hip hop floating out the window. This second release from Pyramid Vrita following his debut 'Indra' is a concept album in which each track puts him in a different room in his "palace". Concept or not, the music is throughly enjoyable soulful hip hop with the usual Dilla influences everywhere.

A hip-hop lyricist in the tradition of Ghostface Killah and Aesop Rock for quick-fire rapping, Homeboy Sandman has enlisted a large roster of producers to handle the other side of things for 'Hallways', including Blu, Oh No and Jonwayne.    Tracks: 1, 2, 3 America, The Beautiful Loads Refugee Activity Heaven Too Problems Grand Pupa Personal Ad Stroll Unraveling Enough

Dub Club
Meaning Of Dub

Produced by Dub Club LA mailman Tom Chasteen, ‘The Meaning Of Dub’ continues in the “one rhythm” LP tradition, where multiple artists use a single instrumental and add their own style to it. The compilation features dub veterans such as Trinity, Josey Wales, Jah Shaka and Scratch Lee Perry to name a few, all of whom bring their respective Rasta vibes to the fore.

Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf
Circa 1990-1993

Curated by Peanut Butter Wolf, Stones Throw is releasing a 4LP boxset to commemorate the late MC, Charizma and the collection of works he and Peanut Butter Wolf created between 1990-1993. The anthology includes rare, classic and unreleased tracks that makes up eight sides of vinyl, along with never before seen photos and ephemera. A lifetime has passed since the murder of Bay Area emcee Charles “Charizma” Hicks who, in December of 1993 at the age of 20, was shot and killed at random while sitting in his car. Despite his short life, Charizma made an impression on everyone he encountered. Charizma’s death deeply impacted his close friend and hip hop production partner Chris “Peanut Butter Wolf” Manak, who at the time stopped making music (and everything else) for several months after receiving the news.

Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton : This Is Stones Throw Records

Founded by Peanut Butter Wolf (and while we're here, bless Charizma), the legendary Stones Throw Records has housed a community responsible for some of the most influential hip-hop artists of all time, from Madlib to beat-making genius Dilla. Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton: This Is Stones Throw Records offers a deep and affectionate look at the label's origins and sustained impact; and, in the living definition of a self-fulfilling prophecy, it has a pretty fantastic soundtrack.

Jaylib
Champion Sound

Mad beat-drama here, combining the killer skills of Madlib and J Dilla to form Jaylib! The duo trade beat-making and rap-rhyming skills over the course of the album, which was first released in 2003. Needless to say, each excel in both practices. Champion Sound is a double LP, reissued on the Stones Throw label.
