Kevin Drumm
The Back Room

He's a noisy drone artist, so of course there have to be two Ms at the end of his name: just call him Kevin Drumm))). He's been a serious player in the electro-acoustic scene for a while now, working with an eclectic roster of experimental artists including Jim O'Rourke. In his own right, though, he makes intense noise with a variety of analogue electronics. 'The Back Room' was made two years ago -- and released scarcely -- but now it's back for all to hear.

Leslie Winer / Carl Michael von Hausswolff

You see the album cover, a cloud mushrooming behind some kind of electricity post, corner struck by dying sunlight. You read the name, especially Carl Michael von Hausswolff, and you know this is going to be something crazy. And then there’s Leslie Winer too. This mix of drone and spoken word is about to prove you right: this is crazy.

The West Lighthouse Is Not So Far

Astrid make music that is primarily ambient, although the occasional appearances of noise guitar squalls and rhythmic bursts give an anticipatory tang to the proceedings. The West Lighthouse Is Not So Far, the group’s fourth album, takes all its titles from lighthouses, and is released on MonotypeRec.

Nate Wooley/C. Spencer Yeh/Audrey Chen/Todd Carter

NCAT was made by a trio of electroacoustic improvisers augmented to a quartet by post-production processing, during a residency at the well-regarded STEIM experimental studio in Amsterdam. Nate Wooley plays trumpet, C. Spencer Yeh plays violin and vocals, and Audrey Chen plays cello and vocals, although Todd Carter’s mixing often obscures these sources. Delicious.

KK Null + The Noiser
KK Null + The Noiser

A collaboration between noise acts? No way! That KK Null has apparently been hanging out with that The Noiser, darting around Europe trying things out. The results, on this self-titled collaborative debut, are a heady blend of electroacoustic action, vigorous spoken word, and some straight-up noisiness. On Monotype Records.

Derek Piotr

An interesting song-based effort from Polish sound artist Derek Piotr. After past efforts focussing on bells and Eastern tonality respectively, Tempatempat takes a multi-layered, structural approach with pop leanings. Sounds as jungle-like the cover art suggests. Out on CD from Warsaw-based Monotype.
