Ed Banger Vinyl, CD & tapes from this label at Norman Records
Blimey, Ed Banger are still going. While this will certainly be a surprise to anyone who thought that the French label had gone gentle into that good night after its late-2000s heyday, the real surprise here is actually that the new stuff they’re putting out is … really good. Dub Tunes comes from skateboarder-turned-producer Tommy Guerrero, and it’s a record that very much delivers on its title. Five Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry-indebted originals are augmented by a trio of digi-dub flips from Trevor Jackson.

Ed Banger! Good to see you again. It’s fine, we’ve forgiven you for what you did in the 2000s. 10LEC6 have been kicking around the French label for a few years now, but the addition of singer/MC Nicole has seen the group develop a new sound that they describe as ‘Bulupunk’. The ‘Bulu’ part comes from the Bantou dialect Nicole sings/raps/shouts in, while the ‘punk’ bit leans more towards the party-starting post-punk of ESG, Liquid Liquid et al. Whatever you call it, Bone Bame is a riotously fun listen.
Lori Goldston is perhaps the premier cellist in America’s alternative rock scene, having played with Nirvana, David Byrne, and as a core member of Earth for a good stretch. Music for Etudes N°11 Runway Show is, however, a solo record, also eschewing the use of distortion pedals and the like for a pure expression of Goldston’s cello power. 12” released, bizarrely enough, on Ed Banger Records.

After releasing their album Still Waters earlier in 2016 Breakbot have gathered a some of their producer friends to have a few cracks at their leading singles 2good4me and My Toy. Featuring remixes from Fatima Yamaha, Canblaster (Club Cheval), Riton, and Borussia. Sun and fun filled pop-come-house tracks aplenty.
Ed Banger celebrate one hundred releases with a big fat compilation, with exclusive new material from all their favourite producers. Mr Oizo, Justice, Boys Noize, Sebastian and many more are involved, throwing chewy electro fun left right and centre. Released as a single CD and as a double LP (with bundled CD), housed in pinball-themed packaging.
Breakbot’s cheeky electro-synth-pop number Get Lost gets a whole host of remixing for Record Store Day 2016. Featuring mixes from Redhino, Kiwi, as well as the band Jamaica doing a cover and The Emperor Machine providing a dub version as well as a remix. Limited clear 12” on Ed Banger records, uber limited to 150 pressings.
French producer Mr Oizo returns and brings along Charli XCX as well. The vinyl 12" Hand in the Fire, on Ed Banger, displays all the charm and electro-punk eccentricity of 2014 LP The Church and, of course, the iconic Flat Beat. This is French house music full of wit, weirdness and varied instrumentation.
French producer Breakbot digs out his synthesizer for this funky synth pop release. Still Waters distills everything great from disco, boogie and jittery French house to create a sharp pop album frozen in time. Ed Banger have pressed this to vinyl LP and CD and have kindly included the CD with the vinyl.
Breakbot (aka Thibaut Berland) comes from the core of the Ed Banger roster, with remix credentials with the heavy-hitting likes of Digitalism, Chromeo and Röyksopp. The Get Lost single precedes his forthcoming solo album Still Waters, with a typically electro-funky cut of house-pop. 10” on Ed Banger.
Para One & The South African Youth Choir
Elevate is the newest gospel-inspired house track from Jean-Baptiste de Laubier. Interrupting thumping electro house beats for introspective and soulful vocals, Para One takes the vocal qualities of The South African Youth Choir on a positive energy trip. The 12” includes an instrumental, acappella version and three remixes.
Para One is responsible for soundtracking all of Céline Sciamma’s films, and Band de Filles, or Girlhood, is no exception. This 2LP collection on the none-more-French Ed Banger label gathers the nine instrumental tracks from the film along with ‘Slow Down’, which has a vocal from Frida Sundemo.
‘Just For Freaks’ is part of a series of three EPs from established Chicago house devotee Boston Bun. The A side ‘Pleasure’ is a deep, unrelenting late night/early morning club track that drives untreated vocals over broken bass lines. In complete contrast, B side ‘Levitate’ is a dreamy, nostalgic and harmonious flirtation with loveliness that plays beautifully against the melodic, uplifting bass line.
After the release of his long awaited album, “Sonic Crusader”, Mr Flash delivers an EP around the track ‘Midnight Blue’, featuring Surahn from DFA Records.
12” features the original track, instrumental version, the unreleased ‘Moonchild’ (with Groove, Funk) + remixes of ‘Midnight Blue’ by Jon Convex (a techno/house version) and two other versions between electro-house and electronica by the Italians Margot.
Just like the album, the cover artwork is one of the 6 silkscreen printings from the “Double Six” collection by the artist Yvaral (Jean-Pierre Vasarely).
Between all the generic electronic 10”s we get to describe, DJ Pone’s Erratic Impulses is a welcome change of pace. Filled with lush beats and beats that sound like a giant traversing the countryside with copious swag in each stride, this 12” piece of magic captured on vinyl is a real crowdpleaser.
Mr Oizo is an oddball French musician and filmmaker, known initially for his banging hit ‘Flat Beat’, and later for the hilarious film ‘Rubber’, which starred a sentient tyre as its murderous villain. Best Of (Wrong Cops) is at once a greatest hits compilation and an official soundtrack to his latest film, and it is brimming with electro-fun-times.
