Love Inks
Blackeye

Hmmm? Indie pop with a sweet female vocalist, twinkly guitars and drum machine.. Kinda sounds like The xx. Or somewhat similar to Young Marble Giants if you wanna go back to 'da source'. It's a nice tune I've got to say. All pretty and understated and not remotely outstaying its welcome. The B-side mines a similar furrow and although it's also v...view item »

Reading Rainbow
Cover The Sky

Nice girl group influenced indie pop like Vivian Girls, Aislers Set, Black Tambourine,Vaselines, etc. Spector drums, indie guitar strums reaching a crescendo that recalls both Joy Division 'Atmosphere' and The Pale Saints. Don't bother looking for the B side - theres nowt on it!...view item »

Sisu
Sharp Teeth / Stranger Skin

Sisu is Sandy Vu from The Dum Dum Girls and this is her debut release of her own new thing which she can call her own. It's good to have something you feel like you can call your own. Apparently the guy who runs the label liked this so much he played the songs on loop for 3 hours. That's a level of commitment I personally have to admire being th...view item »

EMA
Soul On Fire

I was wondering what the fuss was about EMA so now I get the chance to check her out on a single sided 7" on the Italian Hell Yes! label. I'm never sure about 1 sided 7"'s. They either seem like someone has been lazy or someone's forgotten to put another track on. Either way it feels like a bit of a waste like 1 track CD singles but I'm not here...view item »

Boy Friend
Lovedropper / D’Arrest

A buddy of mine is really into Boy Freind (a.k.a. Christa Palazzolo and Sarah Brownbut - two thirds of Sleep∞Over) but they've not really registered with me yet. Can't really explain why as this is a decent single. A-side 'Lovedropper' oozes minimalist synthpop sophistication with la...view item »

Dum Dum Girls
Stiff Little Fingers / Dream Away Life

That ghostly, rattly indie that the Dum Dum Girls produce is starting to make total sense now. Like the Shop Assistants crossed with Moon Duo is the closest I can get to describing 'Stiff Little Fingers' - possibly a tribute to the Irish Punk wonderkids who properly kicked off the whole Rough Trade empire, I do wonder? Problem is with this...view item »

Crocodiles
Neon Jesus

I'll be honest, I don't think I'm that arsed about this. I guess something Suicide-y is what they're going for (cheap, dirty electronic rhythms, blaring organs) but it's not really coming off that well, largely because the lyrics are reasonably appalling and their whole schtick is embarrassingly contrived. Brian and I both came to a Black Rebel Mot...view item »

The Vermillion Sands
Something Wrong / Mother Of Earth

Two things came to mind while listening to this single. One, it's super catchy and....two, for some reason it reminds me of George Formby. I have no idea why. The vocals on the title track have the same pinched quality in my opinion. It's quite a good song though. Jangly and jaunty and sweet as pie. The flip side has the makings a country classic. ...view item »
